CHAPTER TWELVE:
THE WOMAN WITH MIGRAINES
ECHO WALKED INTO THE hospital.
Today was her third day at work and she had one goal in mind, the same goal she has had since she first met them; to find out what was wrong with the Cullen family. The downside about being a doctor was that she had to wear scrubs, but at least they were blue. Meaning they were tolerable. Echo walked up to the nurse at the front desk, learning that her name was Alyssa. She was a sweetheart and Echo found her to be entertaining when they were both bored.
"Good morning, Alyssa." Echo greeted with a smile on her face. Alyssa looked up at the young doctor with a small smile.
"Morning, Dr. Swan." Echo rolled her eyes.
"No formalities, just Echo is fine. We've talked about this." Echo gave her a pointed look and Alyssa just chuckled in amusement. Echo smiled at the sound. She loved making people laugh, which made her wonder why she didn't do it a lot herself.
"I do believe I have both your coffee and your first patient." Alyssa gave the girl her coffee cup as well as a chart that held her patients name. Echo smiled at the young blonde before taking a sip of the warm liquid and humming in delight. "идеальный"
"Repeat that in English please." Alyssa chuckled.
"I said, perfect. It taste amazing, goes along with the muffin I had earlier. Courtesy of my friends fiancé." Echo informed and Alyssa rose an eyebrow.
"Teach me your ways of Russian." She begged causing Echo to smirk.
"Another time, Lys, another time." Echo took another sip of her drink before glancing at the patients chart. She rolled her eyes. "Didn't she come in Monday?"
"Yep. She comes here every other month." Alyssa replies as she looks down at her computer, a sigh escaping her lips.
"And you're making me see her? Again?" Echo whined. Alyssa shrugged.
"She seems to like you." Alyssa simply responded and that made Echo internally groan. She sent a glare toward the nurse who just smirked at her. She grabbed the chart and made her way over to where the woman was. She was a forty-three-year-old brunette that always looked like she hadn't slept in months. She was a mother of three, but had been divorced twice. Of course, the woman never told that to Echo, the Swan girl was just extremely smart and could figure things out easily. Plus, some of the information was on the chart.
"Miss Secret, how are we today?" Echo asked. The woman's eyes were tightly closed and Echo sighed. Suddenly, a teenager walked into the room with bored look on her face.
"Tell her that there's nothing wrong with her so that we can go home, please." The child begged. Echo just cocked an eyebrow but didn't speak on it and instead turned her head back to her patient.
"Alison, can you look at me?" Echo asked. The woman opened her eyes just barely and tried her best to look at Echo. Her eyes then closed again as she let out a groan.
"The lights. They hurt to look at." The woman answered. Echo nodded her head as she wrote the information down on her chart.
"Have you been in pain anywhere?" Echo asked.
"My head." The woman answered.
"Have you been having any symptoms like feeling fuzzy when looking at something, experiencing blind spots, flashing lights, or zig-zag lines in your vision?" Echo asked and the woman slowly nodded her head. "Miss Secret you might be experiencing something called ocular migraines. I'm going to give you some advil, to hopefully ease the pain-"
"She's also been really depressed lately." The teenager spoke up as she popped a piece of gum in her mouth
"Krissy," The mother scolded.
"Depressed how?" Echo asked, looking between the daughter and the mother. The girl, Krissy, shrugged her shoulders.
"She never finds the effort to do things with me or my sisters anymore. She's lying in bed constantly. She won't even go to work because she doesn't want to move from her bed." Echo wrote down all of the information as she nodded her head.
"I'll be right back in just a moment, wait here and I'll have a nurse come in and check on you." Echo sent the two a soft smile before leaving and walking over to the front desk where her coffee was still placed. Echo took a sip of it as she went over the chart. "Hey, Lys, can you look and see if Alison Secret has had a history of depression?"
"Yeah, just a moment." Alyssa nodded. As she did that, Echo scanned over the chart several times before feeling the air around her go down ten degrees. She looked up and there stood Carlisle looking like a god. Alyssa glanced up from her computer and a small smirk fell on her features as she looked between the two doctors.
"Carlisle," Echo greeted.
"Good morning, Echo." He greeted. He looked like he didn't want to be there beside of her. His stance was tense and his gaze avoided hers causing her to furrow her eyebrows.
"Carlisle, are you alright?" Echo asked, not that she cared. She was just trying to be the nice person she was. Carlisle nodded her head before scribbling something down on his own chart and handing it to Alyssa before turning and quickly leaving to his office. Echo cocked an eyebrow as she took a sip of her drink. "Was that awkward or was that just me?"
"Nope, that was definitely awkward. I'm telling you, he has a crush on you." Alyssa said in a sing-song voice. Echo rolled her eyes.
"Really? A crush? What are we? High schoolers?" Echo mused and Alyssa chuckled in response before typing something on her computer.
"I'm just saying. After you left Friday from your interview, he acted really weird. He left early and everything, said his kid was sick. But he was the one that looked sick." Alyssa informed and Echo's eyebrows furrowed deeply as a frown lined her lips. She let out a sigh before adding it to her mental notes of information about the Cullen's. "Oh, here it is. She's had a really long list of epileptic seizures as well as severe depression."
"Why does no one put this on my charts?" Echo sighed before writing down the information. "Is she taking any kind of medication?"
Alyssa shook her her head as her eyes scanned the screen, "No, none that I can see." Echo nodded her head before letting out another sigh and mumbling a thanks. She walked back over to her patient and looked down at the new information.
"I just learned about your seizures as well as your occurrence of depression. Why aren't you on any medication for that?" Echo asked, her voice stern but soft. The woman didn't answer her and Echo sighed. She sat on the foot of her hospital bed as she said, "I can't help you if you won't talk to me, Alison."
Eventually, the woman complied and told Echo everything. Echo listened. According to Bella, if Echo wasn't a doctor she would be a therapist. Once the woman finished, Echo prescribed her with the correct medication. "I'm going to prescribe divalproex to help with the epilepsy as well as amitriptyline which is an antidepressant. I want you to come back if there are no changes what so ever. Alright?"
The woman nodded and Echo sent her a small smile before allowing her to leave and quickly taking the time to call in her medication. Once she was done Echo handed Alyssa the chart and looked at the time to see it was her lunch break.
"Three hours on one patient, that has got to be a record." Echo grumbled. Alyssa laughed before standing up and going on her break. Echo watched after her before deciding to go check on Carlisle. She walked down to his office, knocking on his door. She waited for a moment before opening the door and popping her head in. Carlisle looked up at the young woman before going back to the work that was lying on his desk. "I'm going to take that as a sign to come in." She went into the office further before closing the door behind of her.
She looked at him before sitting down in the chair in front of him. She studied him, noticing how tense he was and how he still avoided her eyes. "Carlisle, are you alright?"
"Yes, I'm perfectly fine. Why do you ask?" He never looked up from his work which made Echo furrow her eyebrows.
"Because, you won't look at me when I speak with you and you are inhumanly tense." She answered, the slightest amount of concern weaving in and out of her words. Echo opened her mouth to say something else but was cut of by her cell phone ringing. She let out a sigh as she pulled out her phone, only to see Bella's caller ID. "Will you excuse me for a moment?" She got up and stepped outside of the office, answering the phone call.
"What's up, Isa?"
"Edward is taking me to his house this afternoon and I was hoping you could pick me up when you got off work." Bella requested. Echo sighed.
"Isabella if this another plan to get me to meet that family so help me-"
"It's not, I swear! Just please, will you pick me up?"
Echo sighed as she ran a hand through her dark locks before nodding her head. "Fine, I guess so. But I don't get off until seven."
"Okay, thanks sis."
"Yeah, yeah." Echo hung up the phone and leaned against the wall with a sigh. She wasn't even aware of the fact that Carlisle had been listening in on the whole conversation.
