CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT:
THE CHANGE

ECHO HAD NEVER BEEN in so much pain before in her life. It felt like she was back in Russia all over again. The burning liquids attacking her veins as she cried out in agony. But this pain was completely different. This pain was something that affected everything. It burned at a higher velocity and its course took a quicker time to wrap around her until she couldn't feel anything but fire. And then, she couldn't feel anything at all.

Echo, a day prior, had told Carlisle that she was ready. Her head was back in place as was her emotional state. So, reluctantly, Carlisle bit her. The others had all went hunting while Carlisle watched over Echo's dead body. Their hope was that her healing powers wouldn't kick in and bring her back to life, so far it looked like they were good. She no longer had a heartbeat. Carlisle had to stand there and listen for a good ten minutes straight to make sure her heartbeats hadn't become sporadic like the last time she had died.

He waited three days. Nothing happened. Four days. Nothing happened. Five days. Still nothing. He was starting to think that he had permanently killed her and that he was going to get killed by Bella when she came back from her honeymoon. Six days. Still nothing. Rosalie had placed a reassuring hand on her adoptive fathers shoulder while Alice sent him a small smile.

Seven days. Her eyes opened. Carlisle wanted so desperately to run over to her, but his children had to keep him from doing so, so that Echo could take a moment to look at her surroundings. Her now ruby red eyes looked around the room. She could see everything so clearly, so closely. She could hear a river that was miles away. Everything felt so. . . different. Echo sat up slowly, her hair falling over her shoulder.

She slowly stood up. A mirror was placed in front of her, and she was surprised by her perfected features. She stared into her own red eyes with curiosity. She smiled when she saw Carlisle appear in the mirror behind her. She turned around and he sent her a small smile.

"How do you feel?" He quietly asked, though Echo could hear him clearly.

"I feel different." She answered. Once speaking, she realized how dry her throat was, causing her hand to go up and wrap around her neck.

"You need to feed." Carlisle told her. She nodded her head in agreement before following Carlisle out into the woods. The two stopped and Carlisle walked up to her, placing his hands on her shoulders. "Listen." He simply said. And so, she did. She closed her eyes and listened. She could her the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, the water running from miles away. And then, she heard the sound she was looking for. A deer. She took off, running with her heightened ability. She smoothly missed branches as she made her way toward her prey that had heard her, taking off. She chased after it and immediately pounced. It struggled under her grasp and she looked at it before quickly sinking her teeth into it's neck, draining the animal dry. She removed her teeth from its neck, wiping the blood from her mouth.

She felt satisfied, but not fully satisfied. She looked up at Carlisle who wore a smile on his face. Echo got up and ran up to him, accidentally pushing him to the ground. She looked down at him with a giggle and let out a shriek of surprise when he pulled her down with him. She hovered over top of him and she sent him a smile. His hand came up to her face and he used his thumb to wipe away the drop of animal blood that was on the corner of her mouth. He sent her a small smirk as she let out a laugh.

"I'm a slob." She stated.

"I agree." He nodded. She picked up one hand from the ground so that she could playfully slap him. The whole time she was wearing a smile on her face. Carlisle leaned up and gave Echo a passionate kiss. Echo kissed him back with a smile. And like Echo had wished, it lasted much longer than it would've if she was still human. When they pulled away, Carlisle smiled up at her.

"Did that satisfy you?" He asked.

"A little." She answered with a small smirk. He smiled with sly amusement before quickly flipping their positions and then leaning down to kiss her once more. She gladly kissed him back with longing and passion that made the Cullen smile. When the couple pulled away he asked again.

"Did that satisfy you?"

"More than you could ever know." Echo responded.

"When you enter the house, please try not to break anything." Carlisle told her. She nodded her head. When she opened the door, she pushed a little to harshly causing her to wince when she heard the slight crack of the wall. She looked over at Carlisle with a sheepish smile, forgetting for a moment how strong she now was.

"I broke something."

Carlisle let out a sigh as he rolled his eyes. Echo couldn't help but chuckle with amusement. He closed the door and Echo took a moment to look at the dent that was now in the wall. She let out another chuckle as she looked at that. "I'll get it fixed."

"Mhm." He hummed as they walked through the house.

"Just, don't let me touch anything that you don't want broken. At least until I get myself used to. . . myself." She furrowed her eyebrows at her choice of words before shaking her head. She walked into the room where all the Cullen children were, only taking notice of them when she was engulfed in a hug. She let out a small laugh as she heard a tiny squeal of excitement come from Alice. She hugged the girl back before letting her go.

"Hello to you too, Alice." Echo said with a laugh.

"I can't believe it took you a week to wake up." Emmett commented from beside of Rosalie. Echo's eyebrows rose in surprise.

"A week? How long does it usually take?" Echo quizzed.

"Three days." Rosalie answered.

"Oh." She turned her head to look at Carlisle. "Sorry 'bout that. Probably because my healing was trying to fight the venom. Which, by the way, that shit hurt. It felt like I was in Russia all over again."

"I tried to warn you." Carlisle defended. "But you're stubborn, and don't listen."

"Well, I wouldn't be a true Swan if I wasn't stubborn." Echo replied, flipping her hair dramatically over her shoulder. Carlisle rolled his eyes while the others chuckled. "Hey, do you know when Bella's supposed to come back from her honeymoon?"

"Not for another few weeks. Why?" Carlisle asked.

"I miss my sister. That's why." Echo retorted. "What day is it?"

"Monday."

"No not that dumbass." Echo rolled her eyes, slapping his arm. "I meant the date."

"August 27th."

"Oh that must suck." Echo mumbled to herself with an amused smirk. Suddenly, echo's phone rings. She walks over to look at the caller ID to see Bella's name. She smiled before answering. "Hey, Bells. What's up?" Hearing her panicked breathing, Echo quickly went into a protective stance. "Are you alright?"

"I'm not one hundred percent sure. . ." Bella answered.

"Why? What's wrong?" Echo asked. She turned her head quickly at the sound of a gasp leaving Alice's lips. "Alice?"

"What's wrong? What did she see?" Bella asked. Echo looked over at Alice and patiently waited.

"Give Carlisle the phone." Alice told her. Echo did so and her eyebrows furrowed in worry.

"Bella, what's wrong?" Carlisle asked.

"I don't know, I'm a little worried. Can vampires go into shock?" Bella asked.

"Has Edward been hurt?"

"No. I know that it's impossible, but I think that I'm pregnant." Bella stated. Echo froze up. "Whoa! Carlisle, I swear, something just moved inside me."

"Is this even possible?" Edward's voice could be heard.

"I don't know." Carlisle truthfully answered.
