MARCELLUS CASTILLON WAS BORN INTO A FAMILY OF PUREBLOOD RAVENCLAWS. Direct descendants of Rowena Ravenclaw herself. It was almost an unspoken rule that every descendant was expected to be sorted into Ravenclaw as if a house color would bring honor to the family name.
Marcellus's oldest brother was the first to break tradition. He was sorted into Slytherin and immediately considered the family black sheep. He was outcasted and so the pressure to fit in became necessary to survive in the Castillon household.
Marcellus was the second youngest of sixโand aside from his oldest brother, each of his other siblings had rightfully been sorted into Ravenclaw. They ticked all the boxes though, Marcellus himself never felt as if he did. But he would rather be sorted uncomfortably into the wrong house than endure the silence that would follow if his robes were any hue but blue.
He begged the sorting hat to put him with his siblings, but the cloth ignored what the boy considered a birthright and declared Gryffindor at the top of its nonexistent lungs. The boy was mortified. But where his own family denied his existence, another adopted him into their small band of misfits. And so the five marauders were born: Moony, Padfoot, Prongs, Wormtail, and Featherwing.

NOTES
1. generational traumaโand overcoming itโ is a prevalent theme throughout this book. it's a closer look at the castillon family during the marauders era. however this book primarily focuses on marcellus's story and touches on algernon's as well, the two who started the trend of not fitting into ravenclaw. eagle wings covers the rest of the family and later generations of those that did fit in the ravenclaw category.
2. marcellus is an extremely sweet kid and has no idea what he's being pulled into when the marauders adopt him into their little group. the second that sirius thinks that marcellus is also rebelling against his pureblood family, he tries to take the kid under his wingโeven though they're in the same year. additionally, marcellus is their fifth roommate so it was only a matter of time before he got pulled into their hijinks.
3. his animagus form is an eagleโhence featherwingโan ironic play on the ravenclaw house but also the fact that an eagle is a symbol of bravery. the marauders occasionally call him bird brain when teasing him, along with other bird-related nicknames. they also start clucking whenever he suggests they don't follow through with a prank... he tends to get hotheaded and then take the prank the extra mile just to prove he's not chicken. he definitely had a fear of heights at first and would refuse to fly... that is until he was forced to.
4. marcellus is infatuated by marlene the second he meets her, but in a keep his distance kind of way until he starts to adopt the mentality of a marauder. the infatuation is mutual, and so they have a pretty flirtacious friendship for a while after marcellus gains some confidence. she friendzones him for a bit though and pushes him away, especially after the prank out of respect for lily as their entire friend group is avoiding the marauders.
5. although marcellus enjoys a good book, he would rather be out physically experiencing the world than reading about it. he has the potential to exhibit great gryffindor traits if he'd just stop overthinking everything. he was the closest with Peter, so the betrayal will likely hurt him the most.
6. the second half of this book will primarily be the aftermath of the wizarding war, and marcellus dealing with the loss of a wife along with four friends as james and peter are declared dead, sirius is thrown into azkaban, and remus disappears from the face of the planet for awhile. while mourning, marcellus cuts off all connections to his friends from his days at hogwarts. he is begrudgingly accepted back into his own home after presenting his daughter and eventually gets a job at hogwarts as a professor of the history of dueling.

AUTHOR'S WORD
All of these author notes are going to pretty much be the sameโme just going on and on about how much I love these characters and that it's going to be awhile before they see the light of day. But that doesn't make it any less true. It took me awhile to figure out how I wanted to break up the marauders series I have planned, so dividing it between my most important characters felt like the way to go about it.
