Meilani propped herself up against Stiles' wall as her legs stretched out on his mattress with him sat at his desk, his laptop propped open as his fingers flew across the keyboard. She had popped by his house with Liam, Isaac and Scott while they waited around for word from Chris Argent. Parrish had mentioned that he had been worried about adding to the body count in Beacon Hills, asking Chris and the pack to follow after him when he randomly left his apartment in the middle of the night. He said that it felt like he was sleepwalking, but he knew there was a deeper purpose behind the supposed episodes he'd been having every single night lately. Naturally, Meilani and Chris agreed to it.
At this rate, Meilani just knew she was never getting a break again.
The silence in the room was deafening as there was never a silent moment between the duo ever since they were two. The only sound that echoed around were the taps of the keys as Stiles worked on his history paper that was due in a few days. He figured that he might as well get school work done if they were going to just be sitting around and waiting for Parrish to get up. Meilani had offered to help ( rather awkwardly if she were honest ) and Stiles politely declined, stating that he already had the whole thing thought up in his mind and just needed to get it out on his word document.ย
Meilani chewed on the inside of her lip as her eyes flickered up to the back of his head. There was still a bit tension around them and Meilani still wasn't sure where they stood. Regardless of Stiles having silently forgiven Meilani already for all the Theo drama that surrounded them. She knew they were okay in that respect, but they still hadn't talked about what was going on with them personally. If they were okay. If they were still boyfriend and girlfriend. To be honest, Meilani still wasn't even really sure if they actually broke up or not. Even though it had felt like they silently did without actually saying out loud.
Not being around Stiles like normal slowly killed Meilani on the inside. She missed greeting him with a kiss and dazzling smile that earned her a dazzling smile in return. She missed randomly poking Stiles and reminding him she loved him, even though she'd said it thirty other times that same day. She missed being wrapped up in his arms when she was especially stressed, his fingers raking soothingly through her hair as he whispered words of encouragement to her. She missed waking up next to him on the nights she'd accidentally fallen asleep at his house after a long night of studying or watching movies.
She. Just. Missed. Stiles.
Meilani missed him and he was sat right in front of her and it was something she needed to fix. So, with determination set in her shoulders as she pushed herself off his bed, and waltzed over to where he sat and slowly closed his laptop lid and leant against the front of his desk next to where he sat.
"Lani, come on, I was on the final paragraph!" Stiles complained, going to open the laptop lid again but it was quickly shut again before he could back in. "What's wrong?"
Meilani licked her lips and her eyes flickered up from her hand that rested on the sleek back of his Macbook and over to his face. She felt herself growing nervous and she could heard Isaac in her mind asking if she was okay as he no doubt felt her shift in emotions. She ignored his voice though and focused on the boy before her. "I, um . . . can we talk?"
"We are right now," Stiles chuckled softly, his hazel eyes meeting with hers and his face fell a bit when he noticed how she fidgeted. She shifted on her feet and would look him in the eye but then glance around the room like she tried to figure out what to say to him. His hand instinctively reached out and he placed it over the one that rested over his laptop, another wave of heat coursing through the two soulmates at the mere touch. "Lani, what's bothering you?"
"I just . . . you know I'm sorry about everything with Theo, right?" Meilani checked, eyes bouncing between Stiles' hazel ones as the boy nodded silently. She blew out a breath with a small nod and relaxed a bit more against the desk, her eyes then flickering to their joined hands on his laptop. "I โ I wanted to make sure weย were okay. It . . . I hate the tense around that keeps following us around, you know? I miss you, Stiles, and . . . I'm tired of just letting this whole thing sit instead of talking about it. So I guess I just โ I just wanna know if . . ."
"If what?" Stiles prodded, noticing the way Meilani trailed off. He was startled when Meilani suddenly slid over to the side so she was stood directly between him and the desk. Their knees brushed along each other and Stiles' hand got knocked from hers when she moved, dropping to the side of her thigh from the sudden action. He could feel the heat from her body through her jeans and a silent gasp escaped, one that Meilani still heard thanks to her enhanced hearing.ย
Meilani took the hand that rested on her thigh back into her own again, rolling out her shoulders to release the tension. Why was she so nervous about this? She hadn't even been nervous when she asked Stiles out back in the summer before their freshman year. Now, here she stood with her maybe boyfriend, and she was too nervous to even get the words out about where they stood. If they could just get back to how they were before. "If we . . . if we can go back to how we were. I miss you more than you could even fucking imagine, Stiles. Do you know how weird it is not to travel to school with you? Or to not have your texts blowing up my phone if you're not with me? Or not waking up next to you? I โ I know what I did was fucked up and that I should have talked to you more that night at the animal clinic. That I should have believed you in the first place and not Theo. I was the worst girlfriend in the world, but I โ "
Stiles' lips cut off whatever other ramblings Meilani had left to spew out, his hands cupping her cheeks gently as he stood up to his full height. Thanks to their five inch height difference, Meilani's head tipped back from the motion but she relaxed against him and her arms finding their home back around Stiles' neck where they belonged. A rushing heat traveled between Meilani's chest and belly, her nerves feeling like they were going haywire and an electric shock coursing through her. Meilani had been so into the kiss that she barely even felt the burning sensation in her side where the gnarly gash she had from when she was attacked by Theo began to blossom, the wound slowly stitching itself back together on its own.ย
Everything around her began to settle again, almost like two missing puzzle pieces had finally found their home between each other again. Like the puzzle was finally complete and Meilani could feel the tension that weighed her down so heavily finally zap from her as if it had never been there in the first place. An unknown amount of time passed between the newly rekindled couple as they pushed all their emotions into the kiss. Everything they wanted to say to each other was said through their lips moving in sync against each other. Everything from I miss you to I'm sorry ย to I love youย all merging together in a searing kiss that Meilani and Stiles had been yearning for since that night in the rain outside the animal clinic where everything fell apart. Now, on a fully clear night weeks later, everything was now falling into place again and Meilani let out a sigh of relief at the thought.ย
Stiles eventually pulled away, pressing his forehead to Meilani's as a soft smile grazed his face, his thumbs rubbing her sides soothingly. "I missed you too, Lani. We're okay, stop worrying, okay? I love you and I'm not going anywhere. I forgive you."
"I love you, too," Meilani whispered, reaching up on her tiptoes to kiss Stiles softly again. However, this kiss barely lasted a second a before Meilani's phone beeped with a text. She huffed and pulled away from Stiles, plucking her phone from her back pocket to see Chris had texted her that Parrish was on the move and headed towards the school. "Shit, duty calls. Parrish is headed to the high school."
"Seriously, why is it alwaysย the high school?!"
After grabbing the boys from downstairs, with Isaac and Liam grinning at Meilani as they obviously heard her conversation with Stiles, they moved out of the house. The couple were thrown about thirty questions, all pertaining to them being back together finallyย and Scott's massive grin over the whole thing was actually quite endearing. Though, Meilani put an end to all of that when she cut across her best friends and brother and had to tell them that Parrish was on the move and they had to make sure he was okay.
It wasn't long before the pack finally made it to the high school, Liam earning a fully heated glare from Stiles when he slammed the passenger door shut behind him. A squeak of an apology left Liam's lips before they headed out to find Chris, who stood around the side of the school with a gun in his hand, eyes trailing everywhere in search of where Parrish could be.
"Where's Parrish?" Meilani questioned, jogging up to Chris once the older man caught sight of the teens approaching.
"I lost him. He's moving too fast," Chris replied, shaking his head as he took another glance around for any sight of the now hellhound.
Liam took one glance to his right and let out a shuddering breath, his hand reaching out to shake Meilani's arm. "Lan, that guy's not moving at all."
Meilani gently removed Liam's hand from her arm and pushed forward toward the body that laid a few feet away. Her sneaker covered feet smacked against the concrete as she approached the unmoving male, his body drenched in blood that caused Meilani's nose to twitch at the metallic stench. Her heart weighed heavily in her chest at the thought of another innocent life being lost thanks to the supernatural and she wanted to assume he hadn't been dead for much long. Another body lay further up, on the small path that lead to where the buses usually parked and the moon reflected down off the blood of yet another victim.ย
"Lans, look up," Isaac breathed, catching Meilani's attention to snap her head up and look into the school bus up ahead. Its backdoor was opened and inside were a mass of bloodied and dead bodies that laid across the back seats, a heavy stench of blood in the air thanks to it. A boy that looked to be around Stiles, Scott, Isaac and Meilani's age weakly lifted his head from where he laid bloodied on the bus floor, raising his bloodied hand along with it and weakly calling out to them for help.ย
Before Meilani could take a step forward, Parrish walked out from the other side, his body emitting small spurts of fire. His voice was echoey and deep, his eyes a fiery red as his hellhound form took over and he was dressed in only a pair of boxers. "It's a trap. You can't help him."
As if on cue, the boy's body suddenly snapped in half and the top half of his body dropped to the ground outside of the bus. His guts and blood splattered along with him and she could hear Stiles and Scott recoil behind her, her eyes trained on the sight in shock and horror. It was almost like something out of a horror film as a pair of white glowing eyes and a massive dark form began to crawl along the tops of the chairs in the bus, staring directly at the pack that watched with wide eyes.ย
The Beast.
"That's big. No one said it was that big," Stiles rambled from behind Meilani and she could feel him shake slightly from where her back brushed along his chest.
"I did," Liam whispered through gritted teeth, not tearing his eyes from the sight of the massive creature that continued to pull itself through the seats in the bus.
The Beast suddenly turned when it caught sight of Parrish next and began to run back the way it came from. Taking off in a sprint while his body ignited with fire, Parrish took off after the Beast. The sound of shattering glass was heard when the Beast broke through the front windshield of the bus and took off into the woods just on the outside of the high school with Parrish hot on its tail.
"What the hell was that?" Isaac gaped, brain trying to work through what he'd just witnessed with his own eyes.
"It's getting smarter."
Even though Meilani was finally happy โ or as happy as she could be with still a raging beast running around that she needed to stopย โ she knew it wouldn't last long. Not when she lived in Beacon Hills and she got bad news thrown at her from left and right. Sure, she woke up next to Stiles and giggled when he'd woken up with kisses plastered all over her face, a small whine about morning breath falling from her lips. Stiles shut her right up when his lips pressed to hers and Meilani was secretly glad that she'd heard Noah leave for work at five am for that morning when Stiles rolled on top of her.
Meilani had about three hours of walking on air before Liam had dropped at the table in the library that Meilani sat at with Lydia, Isaac, Scott and Stiles. He'd barely let any of them greet him before he rambled to them about what Mason had spoken to him about just minutes before. Mason had figured out that the Beast always showed up around any sort of frequency and its where it always attacked. Frequencies that will only be heightened that night at the charity lacrosse game that Beacon Hills High had against Devenford Prep where the local media would be covering it like they had every year.ย
"Mason said it's not just a transmitted frequency, though. It's high powered, like it has to be a really strong signal."
"And that's causing it to shift?" Lydia inquired, leaning her arms forward on the table.
Meilani had been quiet during Liam's explanation, her legs propped up on Stiles' lap as she chewed on her pen cap in thought. She shook her head as her brain worked at warped speed to try and figure everything out that Liam had told them. "No, it can't be just that. Last night Chris said that it's getting smarter, right? What if the Dread Doctors are trying to make the Beast grow faster?"
Stiles furrowed his eyebrows and glanced over to his girlfriend, his arm draped lazily along the back of her chair. "With frequencies?"
"No, no, by shifting. The frequency is just the trigger, but the important part is when it shifts into the werewolf. When Peter was an alpha, he got stronger with every full moon that passed. Eventually, the burns healed and he was back to normal again as if the house fire never even happened in the first place."
"So the Dread Doctors don't want to wait for the full moon," Scott spoke up, his face contorting into one of thought as he began to catch on to what Meilani was trying to hint at.
"Exactly. They want the Beast to be as strong as possible, as fast as possible because of Parrish."
"If this is happening tonight, what are we going to do?" Isaac questioned, earning everyone's attention as they focused on him. "I mean โ we don't know what its weaknesses are, if it even has any. We don't even know how to fight it if it tried anything."
Stiles hold his finger up and bent to dig around in his school bag for something, pulling out a photograph and laid it on the table for the pack to see. A bloodied footprint from the hospital the night Meilani and Stiles showed up to find Parrish at the hospital with Noah showed in the photo with a strip of measuring tape along the bottom of it to measure the size of the shoe. "This came from the hospital. Whoever's lurking inside the Beast is wearing a size ten of indeterminate make. Meaning this is a partial print. Basically, it was all we were able to get considering all the fire, blood and carnage."
"How many size tens are out there?" Scott asked, eyes bouncing between the bloody shoe print photo and his best friend.
"Only one with Parrish's blood on the sole."
"So . . . are we going to try and get the game canceled?" Liam inquired next.
"No, no, we're going to play, but we're just going to hope really hard that it doesn't turn into a blood-soaked massacre," Stiles responded, taking the photo back and stuffing it back into his backpack before any other peering eyes could see what the pack had been looking over.ย
Liam blinked in surprise and tore his gaze to his alpha who rose her eyebrows at him. "Lan, aren't we kind of missing on a chance to catch this thing? We don't have the who, but we have the whereย and the when."
Meilani slowly sat up straighter when all of her pack looked to her for advice. She knew that this game would be a risk to just about half the town of Beacon Hills. Almost everyone showed up to support the charity the two high schools raised money for and it was one of the biggest games of the season, especially with it being against Beacon Hill's rivalry school. However, she also knew that there wasn't even any solid evidence that anything would happen that night. "Guys, there's too many people. We need to get this thing canceled and soon."
Unfortunately, Noah couldn't get the game canceled without evidence of an obvious threat that could end in harm. Since none of them could really tell the school board that a massive werewolf like beast would be raining terror and mass destruction down on the game, Noah suggested they go and get Coach Finstock to cancel the game. Which was yet another fork in the road as Coach Finstock had been in rehab for the past seven months and Stiles and Meilani had to go and try to rip him from the rehab place, Stepping Stones.
When the couple showed up to the rehab center, Coach Finstock had been sat by himself dressed in a blue and green checkered robe, a blue t-shirt and his boxers. His head was tilted back against the small couch he occupied with a coffee table before him, an ongoing game of checkers placed on it. He'd barely even looked up at the duo as they sat either side of him nor when Stiles waved his hand over Finstock's face to try and get him to snap out of it.
"Okay, seriously, you're in rehab, Coach. You didn't have a freakin' lobotomy," Stiles quipped, turning to mess around with the checkers game only to have his wrist clutched by Finstock who shot Stiles a sharp look.
"Don't you dare touch that board. I have got Nurse Gonzalez by the balls of the last three moves and she knows it," Coach Finstock laughed, finally sitting up more on the couch and looking more animated than he had a second ago.ย
"Let it go. You're checking out of this place now."
Coach Finstock laughed at Stiles' words, shaking his head in defiance. "Not a chance in hell, Bilinski."
Meilani frowned when Finstock began to look around the room they sat in, as if trying to make sure none of the passing nurses heard what they talked about. "Yeah, but we know you're okay, Coach."
Coach Finstock quickly hushed Meilani, causing her to blink in surprise when he waved his hands in her face to get her to stop talking. "I have a debilitating disease. It's called I'm not going to take another arrow to my stomach-phobia. Look it up!"
"Coach, nobody is shooting arrows at anyone, okay? We just need you to coach the charity game tonight."
"Charity?" Finstock scoffed softly while Meilani just stared at him in desperation, needing this plan to work so they can save over half the population of Beacon Hills. "Not a chance. I am not leaving this place, okay? I, uh . . . I have relapses. It's . . . it's serious. I have had seven of them already."
Meilani gave her coach a blank look, realizing that Finstock had botched his monthly evaluation to get him to stay in the rehab center for as long as he could. "You mean . . . once a month? Not a single person realized you do this every month?"
"I have phenomenal health insurance," Coach Finstock huffed, pointing a finger between his star player and her boyfriend. "So why don't you two get the hell out of here. I hate charity games. They're meaningless. I mean โ what is it even for this year?"
"Cancer," Meilani deadpanned.
"For or against?"
"Against, Coach. Deeply against," Stiles chimed in, sounding baffled that Coach Finstock had asked that question in the first place.
"Yeah, okay, well I am deeply not interested. I will never coach there again."
Stiles perked up at that, realizing that Coach Finstock suddenly was right where the pack needed him to be so he could agree. "That's okay because we don't actually need you to coach the game."
Meilani smiled innocently at Coach Finstock when his heavily confused gaze turned to her. "We need you to forfeit."
Later that night once the pack were all ready in their lacrosse uniforms ( aside from Lydia and Malia who, of course, were not on the team ), they met in the science lab to speak about what they had to do on the field. Meilani ran a hand through her curls and turned to face her pack with a heavy exhale. "Okay, Mason, you know your part, right?"
"Corey and I break into the Devenford bus and search their shoes," Mason recited his part of the plan like he and Meilani had discussed earlier that day from his spot where he sat next to Liam at once of the lab tables.
"I take out the TV vans," Malia piped up, crossing her arms and pushing off from where she'd been perched against the window behind her.
"Right before the whistle, Coach forfeits the game," Stiles added.
"The rest of us are looking for a size ten with a bloody sole."
"Just out of curiosity . . . " Malia trailed off for a moment, waiting for Meilani to give the werecoyote her full attention. "what if this doesn't work? What if we have to go up against this thing? I mean, I hate to bring up bad memories but Meilani's still healing from what Theo did to her."
Stiles shook his head, a small and proud smile gracing his face as he looked from Meilani and over to Malia. "Nope, she's not actually."
Meilani licked her lips and lifted her lacrosse jersey to reveal her clear patch of skin where the deep, gnarly claw marks had been thanks to Theo's claws. She hadn't even realized they were gone until that morning after she woke up and Stiles removed her shirt from her form. The duo's eyes stared at the freshly smooth skin, it looking like Meilani hadn't even been attacked in the first place. Where the markings had been the night before, they were now gone and never to be seen again. "It, uh . . . ย it happened last night after Stiles and I got back together. I finally healed when everything was finally placed back together. Stiles was the final puzzle pieced I had been missing after the pack separated and got back together. I think it was the soulmate bond if I'm honest. Now that Stiles and I made up, everything's complete."
Scott grinned at his twin and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, hugging her into his side. "Yeah, well, unlike you . . . the Beast doesn't have a pack or a Stiles."
"Not like us," Meilani agreed, her arm going around her twin's waist and allowing him to hug her. "We can do this, guys. No one is going to die tonight. Not with us around."
Much to the pack's usual luck, Coach Finstock refused to cancel the lacrosse game as he had never done it before in his life. He didn't plan on doing it anytime soon either and that only set the pack's plan back because they needed the game canceled. Not that Meilani would vocalize her internalized ( so internalized that not even Isaac knew what she was thinking ) thoughts and tried to keep a positive attitude as she made her way to the field with Isaac and Liam, Scott and Kira watching from the bench as they walked away from him with a worried gaze on their faces while Stiles barreled off to try and find his dad to see if he can do anything.
"This is fine. I mean โ Malia's still going to take out the wiring on the TV vans, right?" Meilani said, trying to sound as reassuring as she possibly could for Stiles and Isaac. "Then we have an hour and a half to try to find someone with blood on their shoes. One person out of four hundred, but totally do-able!"
Meilani's words didn't do much to ease Isaac or Liam's worries, not even when Brett Talbot crouched down before Meilani and gave her the heads up of his sister being in the bleachers if anything were to happen since Liam had, thankfully, tracked down the boy and asked for his help. She knew the lacrosse game would be a nightmare either way as her mind wasn't necessarily focused on the game and rather on everyone in her pack โ plus Brett and his sisterย โ being able to find out who the Beast really was that night. She mentally crossed her fingers that something could go right for them and nothing would happen.
However, this was Beacon Hills and Meilani's hope could only go so far.
The game had barely been going for all of five minutes before three of the Devenford Prep players were on the ground thanks to Kira. She had been all over the field effortlessly and took down guys like it was her job until she reached the goal and gave Beacon Hills their first point of the night, earning a loud chorus of cheers from the stands. Her eyes flashed golden at Isaac and Meilani and the true alpha had thrown her head back as she realized that something was off with Kira. The fox inside of her tried to fight its way out and only made her aggressive because of it.
When Kira knocked over two other players, Meilani huffed and jogged over to the Yukimura girl. "Ki, maybe you should ease up on the other players? You don't even have the ball."
Kira tilted her head calculatingly, glancing over her shoulders to the two hurt players and back to Meilani with a straight face. "Stay out of my way."
Meilani balked at the distorted tone that took to Kira's voice, stumbling a step when Kira shoved her shoulder into Meilani's as she passed the true alpha by. She watched Kira walk away, her mouth drying at the thought of something bad happening and realizing that the pack needed to do something and quick.
"Go with the back up plan?" Liam asked, jogging up to stand next to Meilani as he looked in the direction that Kira stormed off in.
"Unfortunately, yes. We need to get Kira off the field before something happens."
When they went to set up for the next play, Meilani whispered in Brett's ear about getting Kira off the field and needing him to get her angry enough for her to hit him. With a nod, Brett agreed to the plan just before the whistle blew and he had taken Kira down to the ground with a mocking taunt about not being so tough. A taunt that only angered Kira and caused her to grip her stick like a baseball bat, swinging it right at Brett's head and knocking the helmet straight off his head, sending him onto his back. Thankfully, the plan had worked and the referee kicked Kira off the field instantly afterwards. She was pissed, but Meilani and the boys didn't need to worry about her doing anything else drastic.
The game continued on after that with Devenford Prep going on to lead Beacon Hills High five to one. Players shoved each other to the ground and fought over the small, white lacrosse ball as they tried to fight for dominance in the game. Meilani was able to focus on it for all of ten minutes before she heard two sets of grunts from inside the high school, the types of grunts you'd hear during a fight. One of them sounded just like Kira and Meilani cursed to herself, rushing off towards the high school and shouting to Isaac in his mind that she had to take care of Kira again and asked him to keep an eye out on the outside for him while she was gone.
Meilani had burst into the high school to see Kira fighting Brett's younger sister and had tugged Kira back before she could continue her attacks on the short haired Talbot sibling. "Kira, what the hell do you think you're doing? You need to stop!" However, her words went unheard as Kira grabbed Meilani by the front of her lacrosse jersey and threw her over to where Brett's sister had fallen. She grunted as she slid up next to her, the shorter haired girl asking if Kira was Meilani's friend. "Uh . . . yeah. My brother's girlfriend."
"Oh . . . "
"Kira . . . ย stop" Meilani said tentatively, slowly pushing herself back up to her feet while the Yukimura girl slowly began to stalk towards her. The two wolves began to back up while the kitsune continued to advance on them, Meilani glancing from the panting Talbot next to her and back over to Kira who flashed her golden eyes at Meilani. "Kira!"
Kira growled and swung one fist, but that was quickly caught by Meilani and she effortlessly caught the other when it was swung her way. She gripped tightly to Kira's wrists and used the grip on them to push her back into the science lab with the Talbot girl following in their footsteps. The flame of Kira's fox began to glow as it shined over Kira's form and Meilani had roared out Kira's name again, the deep and loud sound of it shaking the walls of the room and snapping Kira out of whatever dark daze she had been in.
"Oh my God," Kira breathed, taking in her surroundings and noticing that the Talbot girl's lip bled a bit from their fight. Her wide eyes snapped to Meilani as her chest heaved in horror. "What โ what did I do?"
Meilani opened her mouth to tell Kira what had happened while she was seemingly possessed, but was cut off by the sounds of screams. She furrowed her eyebrows and slowly turned to the opened door of the science lab to see a crowd of students run past, all wafting in a heavy smell of fear into the room that made Meilani's nose scrunch up from the sour smell of it. Stepping out into the hall, she froze when the sound of a deep, echoing growl could be heard rapidly approaching. Quickly shutting the door, Meilani barely had a moment to turn back towards the door and see what passed before a flash of the Beast flew by the door in the direction the frightened students had gone.
Kira's labored breath from the fear that struck through her at the sight of the creature that passed by. "Mei, what โ what was that thing?"
Meilani gulped quietly, slowly pushing open the science lab door again to reveal a long and massive claw mark in the door and wall across from where the three girls stood. It was like the Beast had left its mark to let everyone know it was there and it was ready to cause chaos and destruction.
"The Beast . . . it's here."
