โ i was born by the river in a little tent. oh, just like a river, i've been running ever since. it's been a long, a long time coming. but, i know a change's gonna come, oh, yes, it will. โž

IT WAS the first day of work. now usually for any employee walking in on their first day brings nerves, but for first-day interns in a hospital, it may be the most anxiety-inducing day of their lives. especially for one dr. jordyn grace long. the people surrounding her in this already sweat stunk lockerroom were her future coworkers. all that jordyn had walking into her first day was her medical education, her beauty, and her mouth. oh, and the fact that her resident was dr. cristina yang. yeah, the cristina yang. the robot. but even so, it was good anxiety.

jordyn quickly threw her hair into a perfectly messy bun, with two strands of died blonde hair pulled right over each of her ears. 'take two deep breathes at a time' she could hear her therapist, toni, repeat in her head, making any nerves die down. most people aren't attracted to doctors with diagnosed anxiety.

"just take two breathes..." jordyn said unknowingly aloud, now sitting on the wooden bench.

"um, hello. i just wanted to let you know that you're talking to yourself right now. i don't know if you care or anything but-" a pale young woman with dark brown hair spoke, slightly stammering through her words.

"oh no, it's totally fine. i'm just kind of insane. talk to my self, that kind of shit" jordyn interrupted the woman, not wanting her to embarrass herself even more before her shift even started. the women's face went slightly shocked at first, not realizing it was a joke. but after a few seconds, she laughed, realizing her error.

"the name's dr. long. but, my friends call me jordyn. and based on how you just reacted to my always excellent sarcasm, i have a feeling we're gonna be the best of friends. because only my closest friends actually think about my jokes. but, hey it's just a feeling" jordyn said shrugging while getting off of the bench. the women giggled while looking at the floor.

"i'm lexie, lexie grey" she said quickly, a small smirk on her face. "and yeah...i'm gonna need a friend...who's a badass like you are, or seem. because to be honest i haven't had many friends in my life, and i don't even curse like...ever. so i think maybe hanging out with you could make me a better surgeon or even a cooler person"

"how could you learn from me? i'm an intern too you know. do you see this ugly ass outfit? i practically know nothing about being a surgeon. and by the way, you seem pretty cool if you ask me" jordyn pointed to herself as if showing off her outfit. the baby blue outfit was clashing with her black boots, making it quite noticeable.

"you're wearing doc martens with your scrubs, it gives you an edge" an intern spoke out. he looked noticeably less attractive than the other interns and even scrawny. he even had baby blue eyes that made his face sorta look like the gerber baby in a strange and creepy way.

"i'm sorry but exactly who the hell are you" jordyn simply stated crossing her arms. the look on the man's face was completely priceless "lemme guess...o'malley, right?"

"how do you-"

"i heard all the nurses talking about you. i mean why wouldn't they be. apparently you failed your-"

"we're supposed to report to our attendees" said one of the interns, directing it towards all of the interns. people stared at her awkwardly after that.

"saved by the bell o'malley. see you later...intern" jordyn said, feeling the power in her steps as she walked away from the freight faced gerber baby man, with her apparent new best friend by her side. jordyn heard that when you work in a hospital your only friends truly are the ones who also work in a hospital. so maybe it was a good thing that jordyn was making friends and already plenty of enemies with her coworkers. socializing was always what she did best after all.

"you're incredible. how do you know so much about people here already? i mean i know a little about one person only, and even that isn't much" lexie rambled as the two walked in the hospital hall side by side.

"what can i say. i just hear and see everything. it's kind of a gift" jordyn said while smiling at the girl. jordyn could tell how intelligent lexie was, but she certainly wasn't as street smart as herself. it was something she decided to keep in mind. finally, they found dr. cristina yang. she was hunched over a welcome center desk while writing stats on a clipboard, her curly black hair in tangles around her shoulders. jordyn, lexie, and the three other surgeons surrounding them stood anticipated around her, waiting for their first instructions. finally, she turned around with a disgusted face.

"i have five rules. memorize them. rule number one, don't bother sucking up. i already hate you. that's not gonna change. trauma protocol, phone lists, pagers. nurses will page you, you answer every page at a run. a run, that's rule number two. your first shift starts now and lasts forty-eight hours. you're interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain, you run labs, write orders, work every second night till you drop and don't complain! on-call rooms. attendings hog them, sleep when you can, where you can, which brings me to rule number three, if i'm sleeping, don't wake me, unless your patient is actually dying. rule number four, the dying patient better not be dead when i get there. not only would you have killed someone, but you would have also woke me for no good reason, we clear?" dr. yang said taking the five note jotting interns around the hospital to the halls and on-call rooms. almost immediately lexie's hand shot into the air, surprising jordyn. "yes"

"that was only four rules" she said awaiting the fifth rule. dr. yang looked lexie up and down before putting her hands on her hips. the cold glare from her eyes seemingly froze lexie in place.

"when i move you move"ย  an awkward silence followed seemingly because her pager didn't go off, and jordyn and her fellow interns stood there seemingly expecting something to happen. "go!" the interns scattered with jordyn tracking behind lexie.

"i think we're gonna be great friends dr. you forgot a rule" jordyn smirked making lexie sheepishly roll her eyes. and indeed, what a start to a great friendship.

โ€”โ€”

it wasn't lexie and jordyn's idea to walk by the residents in the hallway. but based on the fact that they were completely lost and that dr. yang left the two seemingly abandoned in the hospital it was a complete utter accident. but not one that either would regret.

"oh shit" jordyn mumbled under her breath hoping the residents didn't hear or see her and dr. grey walking in the hall. the two had been talking about their medical school experience and the fact that lexie had a photographic memory and overall small things about each other's lives. jordyn purposely glossed over her own life not wanting to tell photographic memory dr. anything too photographic worthy.

"wait, they're totally destroying dr. o'malley over there. maybe we should help him-"

"or we could join them. he failed his intern exam" jordyn said with a malicious smile while practically pulling on lexie's arm to get her to appear from behind the wall. the residents were too focused on o'malley to pay any attention to the two new interns behind him. at least that's what jordyn and lexie thought.

"hey! no interns!" a doctor named isobel stevens shouted at the two which led to all the other residents saying similar things. jordyn was just starting her shift and she already hated all of these people. just perfect. jordyn, lexie, and george started to walk back from the hall before jordyn turned around and stamped her foot on the tile floor.

"this is a public hallway in a hospital. as long as you are a medical professional you are allowed back here. and unless my medical degrees are faulty, i have every god damn right to be back here with my friend and fellow doctor without getting harassed by my residents" jordyn practically whisper shouted to the residents, trying her very hardest to keep her temper down. she stared direct eye contact with dr. yang the whole time. she wanted to lie down the ground rules for herself and make it perfectly clear that she wasn't any normal intern and that there would be no kissing ass. she was dr. jordyn freaking long, and she wanted them to know it. dr. yang got up from her sitting position on the old scrub bed and walked over to where dr. long stood. the two were nose to nose.

"i like you" dr. yang said with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. she glided by the two interns walking with a pep in her step. jordyn took a deep breath while looking at the other residents.

"you're a bad-ass" said the male doctor. he had short brown hair and dark brown eyes and a killer smirk. it was somehowย  interesting to jordyn how he was handsome as well as charming but in a cocky way. tough on the outside soft on the very inside type of aesthetic. he was an open book without even realizing it. it was hot. but jordyn wasn't going to admit it. never.

"i know i am" jordyn simply stated, locking eyes with the man, hoping that her eyes looked like they were flirting but that nothing else was. she started walking away, lexie trailing behind.

"that woman next to dr. stevens. i think that might be my-"

"the name's karev. dr. alex karev" he said while getting up from the scrub bed, and interrupting lexie's whispering. he seemed so confident with himself, strolling over to the two interns with his head practically held high.

"oh, alex don't flirt with the interns. we all know how that ends up" the isobel stevens doctor hollered receiving a chuckle from the other female doctor that sat next to her.

"oh trust me doc i have no intentions on flirting-back with the guy who has one night stands with interns. oh, and let me guess the nurses too" jordyn snapped, her best bitch face on.

"how do you... you know nothing about me" alex said, now switching what seemed to be his flirty face with his judgey face. it was equally as hot. WAIT NO IT WAS'NT

"i bet i know a lot more then you think, dr. karev" jordyn smoothly said making sure to look doctor karev up and down when she said doctor karev (for the dramatic flair) and twist around so that she could printout charts before she became dr. yang's least favorite instead of favorite. she could hear the two female doctors making fun of karev and him simply responding 'shut up' to them.

"okay, that was hot" lexie whispered as they walked out of the hall both laughing a little too loud.

โ€”โ€”

"alright one and three you have those charts?" dr. yang asked jordyn and lexie, now being donned with their new nicknames, which made the woman who had the same last name as lexie (probably just a coincidence) giggle. all of the residents and interns were standing outside of the hospital awaiting emergency vehicles to give the patients.

"right here dr. yang" lexie replied plopping the charts in her hands.

"okay, these will do. one and three, go meet the ambulance with four." doctor yang said while getting excited about the three emergency ambulances coming their way. quite dark for any normal person. but, surgeons aren't normal people. eventually, george joined jordyn and lexie in putting on their yellow protective outfits while waiting for the ambulances.

"so hey, you're an intern again" lexie said, attempting to make the situation less uncomfortable. way to go lex.

"yeah" he replied, obviously too distracted with other things than two nosy interns who were insulting him earlier.

"we won't tell anybody" lexie reassured glancing back at jordyn to make sure she was on the same page as her. jordyn put on her best-agreeing face.

"that's okay, that alright" he reassured while tying the yellow outfit.

"do you know which one is meredith grey?" lexie asked looking at the residents clustered together like birds. even jordyn didn't know which one was meredith grey. she hadn't heard anyone talk about her today.

"I haven't told her you're here today, yet actually" george said, locking eyes with lexie for the first time during the conversation.

"oh, so you know who i am" lexie said looking slightly relieved. jordyn hated feeling out of the know or outsmarted. especially with gossip.

"hold up. who the hell is meredith grey and why does it matter that you guys know each other?" jordyn asked as the ambulances pulled to the curb.

"half-sister who probably hates me. i barely know anything about her" lexie simply replied while rushing towards the ambulances.

"guess that makes sense" jordyn said following in her lead. it wasn't until lexie stopped running and stared at one significant person that jordyn realized who meredith grey was. whatever jordyn thought. they'd catch up later. jordyn rushed over to where dr. yang stood, apparently with someone who she had just pronounced dead. great, we got the dead guy. that was until he took a large breath scaring the living crap out of all of the interns, jordyn excluded. "and he lives!" jordyn exclaimed awaiting dr. yang's instructions.

"not time of death. this guy is not dead" dr. yang exclaimed reaching for her stethoscope.

"i thought he was dead" said the itern dr. yang had called four a couple of minutes ago.

"well, he's not dead now. let's bag him. okay, we've got an uh we've got a guy who's risen from the dead over here" stuttered dr. yang calling over for more assistance.

"this should be interesting" mumbled dr. long.

โ€”โ€”

jordyn sat impatiently with a note pad waiting for instructions from dr. yang when lexie finally came back to the room with a huge orange folder. looked like she finally confronted her half-sister as she practically crashed into the trauma room. then lexie began to awkwardly talk to dr. yang about her half-sister problems while she looked like she couldn't give any craps. which made sense. she was trying to save a zombies life right now. she didn't need one of her interns talking about her personal life to distract her. jordyn was holding in her laughter with the other interns.

"oh, we need to page dr. shepard" dr. yang said interrupting lexie. everyone seemed to be doing that today. she was staring at the x-rays with an almost afraid expression.

"dr. shepard. he's uh he's the, um...neurosurgeon" lexie stuttered going through her notes.

"okay somebody page dr. shepard right freaking now" dr. yang ordered, her expression changing to more serious and angry.

"got it" jordyn replied simply putting in dr. shepard's page number.

โ€”โ€”

"the back of his skull is completely disconnected from his first cervical vertebrae" dr. shepard said while pointing at his x-rays

"he's been internally decapitated" dr. yang said, amazed.

"holy crap" dr. long replied. not bad for her first patient.

"yeah, ninety percent of these die in the field" dr. shepard said rather melancholy.

"and the other ten percent?" dr. grey asked optimistically. she could tell that was how lexie was. bright and cheerful in dark situations. she too was like an open book.

"i've never seen one live" derek said. even he too sounded amazed.

"there's always a first time, though, right?" lexie asked looking for their agreement.

"she has a point" jordyn added, trying to back her friend up. lexie may have never said the words but her eyes pleaded in thanks.

"i mean, he came back from the dead" she giggled. no one else seemed to giggle. jordyn was holding down one though. lexie went back to where all the other interns stood on the wall. she didn't need to say anything and yet jordyn knew. dr. shepard began to talk to the patient but jordyn and lexie spaced out into their own little conversation.

"met your half-sister again?" jordyn asked dumbly.

"yup. and i found out she's dating dr. shepard who i also flirted with at joe's once" she whispered looking disappointed in her self.

"the bar across the street? now that's funny" jordyn smirked looking at lexie. lexie wasn't smirking. "sorry not the time" she muttered.

โ€”โ€”

"dr. o'malley!" jordyn called running down the hall practically chasing george.

"what do you want dr. long" george replied about to turn into a random office.

"i wanted to apologize for how i treated you earlier in the locker rooms. and i don't usually apologize so this is a pretty big deal for me. and i really swear i won't tell any of the interns about the whole failed your exam thing. besides, i don't really like any of them that aren't you or lex so" jordyn finished, realizing she was rambling.

"it's fine jordyn. you seem nice enough when you're not threatening anyone, dr. long" george said with a kind smile that made jordyn giggle.

"why thank you dr. o'malley" jordyn smiled coming with him into the office. that office happened to have dr. yang, stevens, grey (and not the nice one), and alex karev. great, just perfect.

"oh, maybe i should-"

"no no it's fine one. you're the only intern we like" cristina said assuring jordyn that she could stay.

"sweet" jordyn simply replied not wanting to sound over pleased.

"here's the rundown. severed arm. plus mer's half-sister is my intern, izzie is playing dr. dolittle, oh, and alex hates your wife" cristina said pointing at each of the doctors as she went along. jordyn and alex locked eyes once but jordyn rolled her eyes out of it, with a dirty smirk appearing on his face. men.

"dr. sloan's ready for the arm" george answered towards meredith shutting the door in front of the two interns.

"hey, i wanted to listen in! and you're married?" jordyn whispered at george.

"to dr. torres yeah. and...fine. it'll probably be the same things they usually talk about" george said, bored.

"well i'd like to find out what that is" jordyn winked as the two slid down the hospital wall to eavesdrop.

"i'll say it. george is being an ass" jordyn worked out the voice of meredith, making her giggle.

"hey!" george defended hitting jordyn on the shoulder, which made jordyn laugh even more. "whatever.."

"i think it's my fault. i said some things and now he's not talking to me" izzie said contemplating like.

"what happened with you and-"

"i'll tell you in a minute" george whispered, now obviously invested in their conversation.

"i don't know what he's got to complain about. those new chick iterns are hot" alex said in a cocky tone that made heat rush to jordyn cheeks. george made a you're blushing at karev? face at jordyn which only made her roll her eyes at him.

"he's married alex" meredith reminded him, all motherly like.

"yeah, he's married" izzie repeated, but unlike meredith her's seemed more personal. jordyn raised an eyebrow to george, in which all she got back was a not now expression.

"you know who's seriously hot? that lexie girl" alex replied, obviously wanting a reaction out of the other residents.

"get out...before I hurt you" meredith threatened.

"shit, he's coming out" george said quickly pulling him and jordyn off from the floor and making them look as comfortable as possible. by the time he came out and saw the two interns and their incredibly bad acting all he had to say was a simple word.

"interns" while looking right into the eyes of jordyn and walking.

"and you're into him?" george responded, which now earned him several punches to the shoulder.

"we are the worst spies ever aren't we?" jordyn asked in a giggle.

"totally" george replied with a giant smile.

__

after her first OR experience, jordyn had never been more excited. she just watched an intern hold the feet of a man who had a broken spine. it would be something she'd never forget. after jordyn walked over to where george stood in front of the nursery with lexie. he was obviously lost in thought while looking at babies. lexie went to his right while jordyn went to his left.

"it's like a cute festival in here" lexie said smiling.

"i love babies. or overall just kids. they're so young and innocent...unlike every other thing on this godforsaken planet" jordyn giggled at her own joke. no one else was laughing though.

"i delivered that one an hour ago" george said directing their attention to one of the babies in the multiple cradles.

"woah" jordyn said shocked.

"oh, my god. w--why aren't you, like, jumping up and down?" lexie asked confused.

"i've done this before. this is deja vu" george said using his outside voice.

"uh...look george you didn't pass your intern test. you know it--it happens. it's--it's nobody's fault. right?" lexie quizzed using a harsh tone.

"yeah. yeah. it's nobody's fault. yeah, it's just that callie gave cristina the study cards, and meredith didn't write anything down, and cristina was planning a wedding, and izzie-- izzie just had to...you know i'm--i'm responsible. i've always been the responsible one. i'm not saying "what about me?" i'm not saying "when do i get what i want?" or "when do i get to be someone other then the guy who repeats his intern year" i'm not saying that but-"

"what about you?" lexie finished

"and what about what you want?" jordyn added.

"yeah!" george finished.

"i didn't plan on being here. i was all set for an internship at mass. gen. and then, my mother gets the hiccups, and i'm at a funeral. you know, we all have problems. moms die, and dads drink so much that they don't even know what year they're in, and sisters...i...i didn't even know that there was a meredith grey until a couple of months ago. and she won't...she doesn't even want to talk to me. i don't want to be here. you know, i...i'd give anything to not be here. you know, to...to have my life work out the way i planned, to even have time to ask, "what about me?" so you...you change. you...you get over it. i'm here now, so...and you...you delivered a baby today. so, stop feeling sorry for yourself" lexie rebutted looking determined.

"my sister slit her wrists in the bathtub when i was fifteen, so nine years ago...she suffered from depression and suicidal thoughts for maybe two years before that but we never really thought she would actually do it...but she did. and after that my whole life changed. i went from being a nobody with mediocre grades and no real social life or goals to a somebody who was runnerup valedictorian, queen bee, and was going to become a surgeon, just like how my sister wanted. her name was gabriella, but we all called her gabby. she gave me her lucky earring in her note. she was the best. and i know I'll never be as good as her, or as smart, or funny, or kind but...i'm me. and that's the best i can do. and maybe it's your best too" jordyn said while looking at her reflection in the glass and playing with the earring pierced on her helix. it was a simple hoop, but in jordyn's mind, it always reminded her of a halo. there was a nice silence in the air as they all stared at the sleeping infants.

"you guys...are kind of awesome" george said. the two girls glanced at each other.

"we know" the two replied in unicent

__

all of the interns sat in the locker room awaiting the baby delivers entrance. when he finally entered, excited whispers begun to spread. they all stared at him awaiting for george to tell the story.

"what?" he exclaimed wanting to know why everyone was staring at him.

"we heard-we heard you delivered a baby today" said one of the interns, probably doctor karev's.

"on your very first day as an intern" lexie said with a reassuring smile.

"yeah" george answered confused.

"what was it like?" jordyn asked adding to the situation. the other interns began to add their own questions and by the end of it, george finally realized that no one but jordyn and lexie knew that he was a repeating intern. and in that, they became friends. and as george, jordyn and lexie parted ways that night, they knew that they were sort of friends. and that was all that jordyn needed right now. sort of friends.
