ANDERS LOCKHART NEVER THOUGHT
he'd see two of the star football players prancing around in a cheerleading uniform, but the world was on his side today because as soon as he walked through the school doors with his best friend Robbie Garcia, their eyes were instantly greeted with the sight of Jude Jacobs and another jock in a skirt.

The two boys stopped straight in their tracks as they watch the football players walk down the hallway, everyone else already laughing and filming the two. A crowd was forming in the hall, and Jude had decided to take his phone out and started to record them walking in the way too small uniforms with cheap wigs to match. "Well Watchers!" Jude yelled into his phones camera. "You asked for it, and I delivered. Not only am I wearing a cheer uniform, but I'm going to wear it for the rest of the day. Stay tuned and start sending in more dares. Easiest $200 I've ever made."

The crowd starting cheering as the football players high-fived one another and entered the cafeteria as most people followed them. Anders hasn't muttered a single word during the encounter, and as he looked to his right he saw Robbie looking just as confused as he did. "Okay, what the holy hell was that?" Anders asked.

Robin just merely shook his head in disbelief. "I don't know, but somebody's weird wet dream just came to life that's for sure." The boy replied.

"That, boys, was Nerve." A voice interrupts them. Mackenzie Bennett made her way over to the two friends as she pulled out her phone. "Everyone's losing their minds over it, it's some kind of truth or dare game without the truth part. Personally, I'd never play, but getting to see other people make themselves look stupid can sometimes really bring a smile to your face."

The two looked at what she was showing on her phone screen and was surprised to see a fully developed app.

"Wait, Nerve?" Robbie said shocked. "People play that here? At our school?"

Mackenzie nodded at him, taking her phone back and putting it into her pocket. "I guess it's been around for a while but it just got popular in the area. I've only seen some light hearted fun dares so far, but the longer they play the harder the dares get and the more money they receive."

Robbie shook his head, eyes getting wide in what looked to be excitement to Anders. "Dude, I've seen this! I've found older videos buried in some dark website I was on, I didn't think it was real. The video was of this guys hanging off the top of a skyscraper for a dare! The guy fell, there was no way he lived but you can't find any news articles about it. They just said he committed suicide, but this is actual evidence that it was real. That's crazy! The security and encryptions on this has be insane!"

"I can feel your nerdgasm, Robin." Anders said to his friend with a roll of his eyes. Robbie just glared at the use of his full name but it disappears as soon as he pulls the app up on his phone.

Robbie looked toward Mackenzie as the app download. "Anyone can just download this?"

"Not exactly," she answered. "You have to have the password to be able to access it. It's supposed to keep cops out and other snitches. Makes it so only the Watchers and Players can see it. And before you ask the password is snitchesgetstiches no spaces. Some girl gave it to me yesterday when I asked what everyone was talking about."

Robbie was already in his own world as he gained access to the app, falling off into oblivion of his hacker mind and Anders sat down on one of the free benches littering the hallway, already knowing his best friend would be gone for a while. Mackenzie said a quick goodbye as she saw one of her friends enter the hallway, which Robbie replied with a "Thank you, Lesbian Jesus" to which the girl laughed at.

Anders had finished all of the weeks homework so there was nothing he could work on to pass the time before the morning bell rang, so he merely just twirled his pencil around his fingers listening to everyone else's conversations. He could faintly hear all the videos Robbie was currently going through, most were filled with laughter as the people thrived on the attention they got, and glancing around the hallway it seemed a lot of people were paying attention to their phone screens even more than normal, headphones in as they laughed at whatever they were watching. Gears started moving in the teenage boys mind, trying to understand what made these people play Nerve. Was it the money? Or was it the attention? Because Anders knew he would do anything to have the latter.

Robbie had paused the video he was on, still amazed he could finally get his hands on the infamous platform that had been a mystery to him for over a year. He glanced toward Anders, seeing him seem to struggle with something as his leg bounced nonstop. "You alright?" He asked.

Anders looked at him, before he pulled his own phone out and clicked on the appstore. "Yeah, totally fine." Anders told him. "Just thinking."

"That's dangerous." Robbie said with a laugh as Anders punched his shoulder in response. "May I ask what is it you're thinking about that's making you so twitchy. You're shaking the whole bench."

Anders immediately stopped his legs movement, not even realizing he was moving it. He sighed at the inevitable anxiety filled antics and just leaned back, trying to catch a breath. "Would you ever do it?" Anders asked vaguely.

"Do it?" Robbie began confused. "If you're about to ask me a sex question can it wait until after I eat?"

A smile lit up on Anders face as he sat up straight and started laughing. "No, dumbass. Not it it, I meant like play Nerve!"

"Oh!" Robbie said, as he started laughing too. "Well you gotta be more specific man." The two boys sat on the bench as their laughter finally died down, Robbie pulling a granola bar out of his bag and broke it in half, giving one piece to Anders. "Honestly? Probably not. I mean, it would be pretty awesome but I'm more of a watch from the safety of my own home kind of person, you know? Plus my legs just really wouldn't good in a skirt."

Anders took his words in, choosing to ignore the predictable joke as he stared down at his phone screen. The words WATCHER OR PLAYER kept flashing and it continued to mock him. It would be so easy to hit Watcher like Robbie did and be content with watching other people rise to fame from making a fool of themselves. It would be safe and comfortable and so like him.

But as a dozen more people walked down the hallway and brush past him, not even acknowledging he was there in the first place, something in him finally gave in and he pressed the PLAYER button instead.
