โ•ฐโ”ˆหš ยท ยฐ . ย THE HOWLS ECHOED AROUN THE FOREST ย likeย a siren of despair that sent panic and unbelievable grief through the members of the pack and coven.

The day had started well, the sun wasn't too hot but still kept us fairly warm with its rays. There was a pleasurable wind, it blew through the leaves spreading the ethereal scent of the magic-bloomed flowers throughout the backyard of my house.

There was only a week separating us from the beginning of a new school year, we were trying hard to live those few days at maximum, with bonfires, days at the beach, periodically jumping from the higher cliffโ€” it was something that the pack had found very intratening, doing it almost every day that summer.

We had spent a lot of time together that summer, us three witchesโ€” plus Maddisonโ€” and the two wolves, Jared and Paul. After imprinting on her ex-girlfriend cousin, as much as he tried to fight it, hate the bond, Sam couldn't hold that feeling for very long.

He had spent almost all summer with Emily. Recently, he had introduced the girl to the rest of us after explaining to her the supernatural world. It was surprising the way she had easily accepted this new reality, and Emily, the few times she had spent with us, we could all agree that she had become very important to hold us together. Similar to Maddison, Emily had a very motherly and protective instinct, she had more than one time separated Jared and I or stopped the two shifters from going after the rest of us. For sure, she had been of great help to Maddison Mental health.

The friendship that blossomed between the two human girls resembled more the one of two siblings, with the older girl acting very much like an older sibling to the Swan girl.

With so little time dividing a fun summer at the dreaded beginning of the school year, there was something that we couldn't hold off anymore. Homeworks.

It was surprising to see that even Maddison had still had some to finish. Between Amelia and I, we both had the job of helping our friends. Some had an easier time than others, but nevertheless, complaints echoed through the backyard every few minutes.

"Can you focus?" I snapped, narrowing my eyes at the pack second-in-command who had resumed playing with his imprint's hair, distracting himself.

"I'm bored." he groaned, throwing himself down on the fresh grass, "I can't do this anymore, my head is going to explode."

"You didn't even finish half of your homeworks." I deadpanned, refraining from rolling my eyes.

"We have been studying for hours. We didn't even stop for more than 15 minutes, I can't do this anymore, please Trixy."

"What do you want me to do?"

"Do them for me. You are so smart, please."

"The fact that you have admitted that, surprised me." I replied with a raised eyebrow, impressed by the lengths that he was willing to go to not do anymore homewords, "But I won't."

"Why not?!" He whined.

"You have done nothing today but read that book. You could at least help us with something. Come on, little arsonist, I know you have a heart." Paul complained, smirking his way throughout the entire time he spoke.

Narrowing my eyes into slits, I lasered my focus on the third shifter, "One, I spent the entire day helping your ungrateful asses, and two, I'm reading a college level chemistry book, I'm not exactly doing nothing."

"Why the hell are you reading a college level chemistry book?" Kim asked, taking out from her mouth the pen that she had been chewing on for the past hours.

"Because I want to?" I replied in a deadpan, "And why are you not asking Amelia anything?"

"Because she is more inclined to asphyxiate us then help us." Paul shrugged his shoulders replying to my question.

"True." Amelia commented, not even moving her gaze towards us to speak, she was too focused on keeping up her tan to a nice shade before winter would inevitably come.

"You guys are unbelievable." I groaned, "I'm feeling more inclined to incinerate you more than help you right now."

"Sure Beatrice." The russet eyed man chuckled.

"What is that even supposed to mean?"

"Nothing." He shrugged his shoulders, lips twisting into the beginning of a too cocky smile.

"You are getting on my nerves, Lahote." I warned him,a finger pointed in his direction.

"When he is not?" grinned Kim, leaning her head towards her boyfriend who snickered under his breath.

Can you guys stop?" Suddenly, Maddison spoke, annoyance written all over her face.

"We are doing nothing." Jared said, defending himselfโ€” and us.

"Exactly, you are doing nothing. You still have a lot of homework to finish." Maddison pointed with her pen to the books sprawled before every teen.

"Fine, fine." Rolling his eyes, Jared said. "But-"

It was just then that the howl echoed throughout the woods. An agonizing sound that almost made tears form in my eyes.

"What is it?" Maddison questioned looking around her at our franetic expression.

I gulped down an anxious breath,"It's Sam."

โ•ฐโ”ˆหš ยท ยฐ . ย "Where are you guys? " Amelia, using the connection with the pack, asked the two shifters who had taken off as soon as we heard the howl coming from the Alpha.

"Is Sam answering?" Kim added so after.

"No, he is just panicking, we are still too far away to understand. But he is panicking." Jared replied.

"Yeah we can feel that too." I commented sarcastically, tightening my hold on the steering wheel, feeling my skin warming up.

"Deep breath, little arsonist. You are not going anywhere if you blow your car up." It was Paul that spoke, and almost as if compelled by his timber of voice, my hand relaxed slightly.

"I'm not going to blow my car up." I said back. Looking at the handprints now forever incised on the leather, I added, "probably not."

Minutes passed in silence, we were all just going towards the direction of Emily's home where we knew that the girl and my brother had spent the day together.

It was when we neared the place that Sam's excruciating feeling passed through the bonds.

"Fuck! " Cursed Paul.

"What is happening Lahote!" Snapped Amelia, she was clenching and unclenching her fists, a bead of sweat collection on her hairline.

"It's Emily."

"What happened to Emily?" I asked, the feeling of dread rushing through my whole being.

"From what we can understand, Sam shifted abruptly and she got hurt. Sam thinks she is dead. He is panicking too much to make much sense to what he is saying."

"Is she?" With fear coating her words, anxiety making her bite her nails, Kim asked.

"We are going there now." Jared said.

"I'll come with Maddison, we are calling Sue. Mia and Trixy, you should go and search for Sam." Kim said.

"And what are we going to say to him? We don't know if she is even still alive."

Silence reigned in the car as we drove at neck break speed towards Emily's house. The wolves had just changed into their clothes when we arrived. It didn't take us a lot to find Emily.

The girl was sprawled on the ground, three long gashes that started from her temple down to her collarbone bleed profusely, staining her warm brown skin at the ground underneath her.

"Oh my god!" It was Amelia the one that moved first followed quickly by Paul.

"Is she alive?" Maddison asked in a shaky tone, her bottom lips quivering, her pale skin bleaching even further.

A secondโ€” two passed before Paul replied, "Yeah, yes she is still alive."

Collectively we exhaled out a sigh of relief. It wasn't only for the girl herself, but for Sam too. I knew without a doubt that he would've followed her to her grave.

The following hours were not the easiest on anyone. Sue Clearwater reached us before the ambulanceโ€” since she was aware of the supernatural, the truth could easily spill from our lips. She stabilized Emily before the girl was transported to the Forks hospital.

From what we could have grasped from Sue's rushed few words, Emily was in no danger of dying. The wounds were for sure deep enough to scar the girl for life, but none had hit any important artery to make her bleed out. It would be a long convalescence, but she would be back to herself in no time.

But even with the relatively good news, we were sure that none of our words for now were going to get Sam to shift back from his wolf form.
