โฐโห ยท ยฐ . ย PATROLLING THE RESERVATION GROUND had become a habit. It was one of our main jobsโ vampires, our natural enemies, were just on the other side of the treaty lineโ and if the Cullens were not an enough problem, we had the confirmation that other cold ones could reach our territory.
The nomads had passed only months before, and the experience had not been a positive one for us. It brought us shame that we had not been able to stop them from crossing.
Wolves had the most turn patrolling the treaty area, they would shift into their animal and walk the line keeping their guard up.
The job of the witches was slightly different. Our coven was not completed yet sadlyโ that was a stark difference with the pack. They did not want anyone else to shift, but for us, it was almost vital. Not only because the missing presence of the water witch messed with our balance, but because we also know the struggle of growing up feeling this immense pull towards our element. Most of the time, this attachment made really no sense. It could make you feel an outcast, most of all, weird, like your interestโ your pull towards itโ was too taboo to even be speaking of it.
Amelia, Kim and I had our shift together for patrolling. Our job was primarily to check the spells that littered the treaty line as protection, recharging themโ like we would do every weekโ and recreating them when they became too old.
"Two spells down, other three to go." Kim spoke, as we walked she passed her hand on the trunk of the trees, feeling the texture underneath her palm, the connection with nature as it flowed from elements born from it to her.
"We need to redo the one on the main street too, so four." Mia corrected the earth witch.
"Didn't we make that last week?" The Caldwell girl questioned, turning around for a second to make eye contact with her .
"Yes, we did. But when I passed through it yesterday, it was already faltering." I replied with a sigh, annoyed by the discovery.
"How?"
"It's our powers." Amelia told her, "We didn't notice when making it but the spell changed itself as we did it. It gave space for the fourth witch powerโ"
"Which we do not have." I added cutting her off.
"And so it became unstable and not fully completed. Meaning..."
"We have to redo it." Kim finished Mia's phrase.
When we arrived at the new spot, we were quick to create a circle, grounding to the nature around and attuning ourselves to the previously made spell. We were trying a new technique. Opposite to channeling our own energies to do spells, we were trying to get aid from the sun itself, channeling its rays and warmth and overall powerful energies directly into the protection spell.
Tingles spread down to our finger as we mumbled under our breath the spell, and once it was enough, with a single touch on the ground, we let the energy flow out recharging the spell.
It was easy enough if not a bit tiring. After making sure to double check that it was done correctly, we were soon once again walking to the next spot.
"How is it going with the creation of the flower?" I asked the earth witch, opening a new topic of conversation.
Kim let out a sigh of disappointment, "Not good, something is missing and I don't know what exactly." She admitted.
Kim had the insanely good idea to create her own flowers and herbs for her own needs. Things that not even in nature existed or just concoctions of herbs that were spelled for a precise purpose. The flower that she was trying to create was the most important ingredient for a tea that would supposedly help the shifter with their so-easily triggered anger. It was a hard task since their rage had a supernatural element tied to it. Trying to suppress it even if slightly was something almost impossible to achieve, but Kim was stubborn and passionate about it enough to have the will to continue to try until she would get it.
"It's harder than I had thought it would be. The flower is not blooming like I want it. At all. And I still have five other herbs to grow that are going to be a pain in the ass. And if I mix them incorrectly, they can be very poisonous."
"Poisonous?ย " thought the bond between the pack and the coven, Jared's voice came. "What is poisonous, Flower?"
Seconds later two wolves appeared. One with chestnut colored fur, a spot of gray surrounding his eyes creating the visual effect of a mask. Jared. The second one, dark silver fur that shined under the sun, the darker color faded to white in the belly and spread on his face, around his mahogany eyes leaving only the nose to still be colored in silver. Paul.
"What are you guys doing here?" I asked out loud to the two wolves, confusion etching my features, "You don't have the patrolling shift now."
"We were bored." Jared replied, his voice echoing through the bond. His voice was mixed with the pur that rumbled his chest as he brushed his head against Kim, the girl smiling acknowledging his want and showering him with kisses all over the snout.
A growl echoed from the other wolf, as even in this form, he was able to glare at the couple.
"Yeah we don't like the PDA too but I don't think that it earned a growling." I commented, raising an amused eyebrow at Paul that was currently shifted. When his eyes met mine, I could see something else shining behind them, something that he was quick to cover upโ sadness and yearning. It left me utterly confused.
"Aw look at that, the big bad wolf is growling because he wants pets too." Teasing him, Mia said, her lips turning into a mocking pout, "That's so cute."
Rolling his eyes, Paul let out what sounded like a scoff, then his mood completely changed. The annoyance bleeded into amusement, "Not as cute as Beatrice when she is drunk." It was clear that he was teasing me about my actions just a couple of nights before.
"Shut the fuck up." I scoffed, hiding my amusement behind annoyance. "I'm actually really sad that I can't create the flame sprite anymore. And yes, I tried. More than once."
"You can only create them when drunk?" Amelia snickered.
"Apparently." This was actually making me sad enough to pout. The huge head of the silver wolf snapped me out of my depressing thoughts when he shook me slightly when he rubbed it against the back of my hand. At that moment, I did not know if it was because he wanted cuddles or just to stop my train of thoughts. Nevertheless, I took the opportunity to pass my hand through his fur.
It never faltered to amaze me like a single touch from one of the wolves could easily calm us, make us feel betterโ both us and them. It was extraordinary.
"What are you guys doing here, anyway? I thought that you were hanging out with Sam." Kim asked as Jared playfully tried to nip at hands earning giggles from the girl.
"Leah called him." The brown wolf replied.
"She pleaded with him to go to her house and spend some time with her." Paul added, nudging my hand when I stopped moving it to make me start brushing my fingers through his fur again.
"I thought her cousin was here." I said after rolling my eyes at the insistent and needy wolf. I still couldn't grasp how fast the relationship between us had changed so drastically in the last few months.
"Who knows." Jared spoke without a clue. "Are you done with the spells?" he then asked.
"Nope, we still have other three to do." Mia replied, starting to walk in the direction of the next spot. "Teletransportation... How I would love to have that." She mumbled dreamingly.
I clicked my tongue on the roof of my mouth, "True."
We followed after the air witch that took the position ahead directing all of us. Light chats exchanged alongside smiles and laughter that seemed to all suddenly come to a stop when somethigs changed abruptly.
The pull of an imprint.
"Oh my god." I mumbled under my breath. WIde eyed looks were exchanged between us witches, the only one who had felt the new change.
"What is it? What happened?ย " It was asked in a frenetic tone by one of the shifters through the bond.
Abandoning the light feelings to a much more serious one, Amelia replied, "It's Sam."
This was going to change everything for him. Imprinting wasn't something that he had wanted, he wasn't ready. Not yet.
"Sam imprinted."
