Harper wrapped her arms around my arm as we walked out of the theater. It was pitch black outside and the air around us was ice cold. Small snowflakes are falling down from the dark sky, and Harper wraps her arms tighter around my arm and leaning against me so she won't fall on the ground that had a layer of ice.
Since every parking spot where you can connect the car with a heater was occupied, so our car windows were covered with ice and snow and our car was ice cold on the inside.
Harper sat in the car trying to warm herself up meanwhile I was outside trying to remove all the ice with a scraper. I waved at her sometimes and she responded with a wave and a smile painted on her face.
My breath came out like smoke when I exhaled and my fingers were cold as ice and they started to get red/ purple-ish and I almost couldn't get a grip of the scraper.
"Holy shit it's cold outside," I said and cupped my hands over my mouth and blew warm air on them. "You okay?" I asked and looked at Harper who did the same as me, blowing warm air on her palms. "Yeah" she nodded and rubbed her palms against each other.
I grabbed her hands and blew warm air on them trying to warm her up. "Better?" "Better" she smiled and pecked my lips.
She was silent on our way home and I understood that the movie wasn't her favorite. "You didn't like the movie didn't you?" I chuckled, still keeping my eyes on the road. "No, I liked it"
I raised one eyebrow and looked at her for a few seconds. "I'm serious. I liked it" "You usually talk about the move afterward if you like it. And now you are silent. You can tell me, you didn't like the movie, didn't you?"
It was silent for a few seconds and I stopped in front of the red light at an intersection and I hear a click beside me. I looked beside me and saw that Harper had taken away her seatbelt and she moved closer to me. "Let just say that I'm the one that is going to choose the movie next time" she whispers against my cheek and trailed kissed down my neck.
"Baby please put on the seatbelt something can happen" "Don't worry. It's nighttime and no one is on the road. And we are almost home" her lips found my lips but before they could meet I pulled her away. "Please, darling. It doesn't matter if we are almost home. The road is slippery and it's snowing. I don't want anything to happen to you"
I said and started to get worried. If something is happening I'm gonna blame myself for the rest of my life. "Don't worry, nothing will happen" she whispered and leaned in and kissed my lips.
Somehow she managed to make me forget that we sat in a car in front of the red light. I deepened the kiss and pulled her face closer to me. "I love you," she said against my lips and I could feel her smile.
All of a sudden I saw two car lights from a snowplow coming closer to our car. The side of our car. The side where Harper sat. I quickly pulled away and tried to drive away but it was too late.
The snowplow hit our car. I hit my head in the steering wheel and since Harper didn't have a seat belt on, so she flew through the car window, causing it to break into millions of pieces.
I hit my head so hard on the steering wheel so I passed out for a few seconds. Or was it a few minutes? I don't even know for how long I passed out.
I opened my eyes and my head was pounding and an annoying howling sound was ringing in my ears. I rubbed my palm against my forehead and my sight was blurry so it was hard to see. Before the chock came I couldn't understand what just happened. One second I kissed Harper and in the other second, it was a howling sound ringing in my ear and blood rolling down from my hairline.
And there the chock came. I saw clearly enough to see that Harper laying on the engine hood. My heartbeat raised faster and I quickly tore away the seatbelt and ran out to her.
She was ice cold and didn't move an inch. "Harper?" my eyes widened when I didn't get an answer from her. "Harper," I said more firm and shook her slightly by her shoulders. I placed my pointer finger and my index finger on the side of her neck to see if I can found any plus. But there is nothing.
I placed my hand on top of my other hand and interviewed my fingers with each other. I pressed my palm on her chest and counted to 30. As I counted aloud for myself tears started to run down my cheeks. "Please darling wake up" But I still didn't get any response. I tried to do CPR one more time but it still didn't work.
I pulled out my phone from my pocket in my pants and called 911.
"911 what's the emergency?" a woman's voice said on the other side of the phone. "My wife and I were in a car accident and she won't wake up!" "Have you tried to do CPR?" "What do you think?!" I yelled at her. How can she ask such a dumb question? "Do you think that I'm gonna let my wife die?!"
"Sir calm down. Where are you right now?" the woman asked with an annoying calm voice? I looked around to see if I saw a sign with the name is the street.
I said the name of the street and she said that she will send an ambulance and that they will be there in 20 minutes.
I wrapped my arms around Harper's body and carried her and walked to the back of our car and took out a blanket. "Don't leave me, please. Stay with me, I can't lose you" I whispered and warm tears rolled down my cold cheeks. I hold her close to my chest and prayed for myself that nothing is going to happen to her.
A few minutes later I heard the sirens in the distance coming closer by every second.
Not long after the ambulance parked behind our car and two ambulance man came out running with a stretcher. They took her away from my arms and put her on the stretcher and ran back to the ambulance.
I ran after them and jumped in and sat down beside her while one of the ambulance men put a gas mask over her mouth and started the breathing machine. I grabbed Harpers's hand and whispered against her cold cheek.
"Stay strong darling. I know that you can do this. You can't give up" I squeezed her hand tighter and tears kept running down my cheeks.
"Here take this. To stop your blood pressure" the ambulance man said and gave me a cloth and I pressed it against my forehead.
Around 15 minutes later we were running in the hallway in the hospital. Four nurses run with Harper on a hospital bed and I ran after them.
They run into an operating room and one of the nurses stopped me "Sir, you cant follow us. You have to wait" "But she is my damn wife!" I raised my voice. I usually don't act like this. But at this moment I was scared. I don't want to lose Harper like this. And all of this is my fault. I should have been more strict about her putting on the set belt.
"I know. But we'll do our best" she said and placed her hand on my shoulder and walked into the operating room and locked the door behind her.
I walked to the waiting room and it was empty since it's at night time. I took a seat and rested my elbows on my knees and my fingers in my hair. My left leg started to shake and I have never been more scared than I am now.
I felt someone clearing their throat and I quickly sat up on the hard hospital couch.
"What happened? Is she alright?" I asked the nurse that is standing in front of me.
"The operating went well. But she is in a coma right now and we don't know when she will wake up and we don't know what's gonna happen after she wakes up. But we keep you updated every day and it's good if you try to come and visit her every day and try to talk to her, by that she will feel safe and it will make the chance bigger so she can remember you"
"What do you mean with a bigger chance? Won't she remember me?"
"We don't know yet. She got brain bleeding and there is a chance that she will lose her memory"
My eyes teared up. There is a chance that she won't remember me.
"C-can I see her now?"
The nurse nodded and led me the way to the room where she laid on a bed with a machine that is making a sound along to her heartbeat, and a mask over her mouth connected to another machine that is helping her to breathe. I can't see her like this. Bruises all over her face and arms.
I took a chair and sat down beside her and grabbed her hand in mine. "I know that you can't answer me. But you have to stay strong. You have to be strong so I can take you home so we can leave a happy life again. I can't lose you. Not like this. Promise me to stay strong"
I closed my eyes, letting tears roll down my cheeks, and kissed her softly on her forehead. "I love you and I always will"
