xxviii. ex lovers on a mission

Chapter 28 | The New Deal

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

"I'm going to kill Stefan and the rest of the fucking save Elena squad!" Mimi raged, pacing back and forth in her living room.

Adelaide and Caroline shared a look from where they sat beside each other on the couch as the woman continued to rant to them.

"How exactly does he think this little scheme is gonna go?" She asked rhetorically. "Stealing the Mikaelson's. Yeah, like that's gonna end well. And what the fuck have they done to Rebekah? They are definitely to blame for her disappearance, no a doubt about it. Why did she go to pick up her homecoming dress from the Salvatore's by herself? Was she not thinking?"

"Okay, okay!" Adelaide finally interrupted her, cutting off her dramatic rant. "I know this is all getting to you, but Mims you gotta take a breath."

Caroline nodded worryingly. "Yeah, Mimi, you haven't stopped all morning."

Mira let out a deep relieving breath, closing her eyes for a moment to regather her thoughts. "Alright, I'll calm down. I'm sorry." She sat down across from the two blonde's, sinking into the seat. "Have they said anything to you?" She asked Caroline, not accusingly though just curiously. "About what they've been planning next after their failed Mikael scheme?"

Caroline shook her head with a frown. "They're hardly talking to me. The last time I really spoke to Elena or Bonnie was when the ghosts were running around. They don't trust me with anything anymore." she rolled her eyes, thinking about her friends. She still cared about them of course, but she made it clear she wanted no part in harming Mira. And since killing Klaus would hurt her, she wanted no part in that ordeal either. After that they've practically been ignoring her.

The Forbes girl was awfully conflicted still, so she was just trying to stay out of everyone's way. But the scooby gang refused to let her be on both sides and they were just constantly pissing her off.

"Who needs them anyway." Addie scoffed, "You have us care bear." she grinned cheekily while Caroline shoved her playfully.

"We know that we're much better, sunshine," Mira winked. After a moment she was abruptly standing. "Nope can't do it. I can't relax. I gotta figure out a way to find Stefan and get back those coffins."

Adelaide threw her head back in annoyance. "Well we're gonna leave that to you. Just let us know if you need us."

"Alright, I'm gonna head to the grill. I need a drink and for some reason we're all out." She gave a pointed look to Adelaide.

Addie put up her hands in surrender. "Don't look at me, have you met you and your brother? you go through almost two bottles a day. Each."

Caroline furrowed her brows, "that's true. You two might just drink more than Damon and that's saying something."

Mira nodded. It was true. Her and Matteo were bad for their drinking. Theo hated that being a vampire meant you couldn't get drunk easily, but he had a whole lot of fun trying though.

The heretic felt her phone beep in her pocket. She pulled it out to see a message from Theo. "Speak of the devil," she shook her head.

"Wait, did you tell him about Stefan stealing the coffins?" Caroline wondered.

Mira shook her head. "He was packing for New York when me and Klaus found out. I decided to not ruin his little vacation, he wouldn't have left if I told him."

"Wasn't he only going to New York, because you and Klaus were going to undagger the Mikaelson's and he was scared Kol was gonna kill him when he found out he was alive?" Adelaide asked, recalling Matteo freaking out dramatically about his old best friend's wrath.

"The irony," Caroline giggled quietly to herself.

The Emberson woman nodded while she read his text. "Yes, he's a scaredy cat although rightfully so. We're never going to hear the end of it from Kol."

"I can't wait for that." Adelaide chuckled. "Kol and Matteo. from what Theo's told me about him, he's never quite found a best friend like the Mikaelson."

Mira smiled sadly. "Those two were one and the same. Brothers in every way except blood. Matteo's had the hardest time staying away from Kol. Anytime he tormented someone or even when he simply thought of a joke, all he wanted was to tell Kol about it just as he did when we were human, but he couldn't. For so long he's wanted to reunite with him yet now that the time has come he's scared, although he'd never admit it."

"That's so sad," Caroline frowned, feeling for Theo. "Hopefully things will work out when Kol is undaggered." she said optimistically.

Mira hummed in agreement. "I didn't tell him about Stefan stealing the coffins mainly because Theo would make this town unrecognisable just to find Kol and Elijah. Finn though, he and Matteo never really got along. They were always at each other's heads. Finn couldn't stand Kol and Theo by themselves, let alone when they were together causing mischief."

"I also can't stand Matteo by himself. I don't know how i'm going to deal with two of them running around." Addie shuddered at the thought while the other two laughed at her. "Well what did he say?" she asked, gesturing to the phone.

"Just that he got to New York. Him and Elliana are going out..." The brunette pulled an amused face, "to dry New York of its alcohol supply."

Caroline threw up her hand, "See!"

Mira laughed at her, walking off. "I'll see you two later. Enjoy your day!"

"Bye Mimi, try not to murder too many people!"

━━━━━━━

Mira headed for the entrance of the grill, sunglasses rested on top of her nose covering her eyes from the light and the pesky humans.

"Well if it isn't my favourite girl," A smug voice came from behind her causing her to turn and come face to face with Klaus.

Mira shook her head, fighting off a smile as she pulled off her glasses. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm here for a drink. I am also looking for a certain doppelgänger or the eldest Salvatore brother. What about you?" He tilted his head, slyly eyeing her up and down with a smirk.

"Came for a drink as well," she shrugged. "I'm all out. Any update on the hunt for your siblings?"

Klaus sighed as he shook his head. "That's what i'm here for, I can't seem to find Stefan." The two were shoulder to shoulder walking into the grill, the hybrid opening the door for the heretic.

"I had no luck with a locator spell. So his either got a witch on his side or his hiding in a deep hole." Mimi rolled her eyes in annoyance. "My guess is Bonnie Bennett is involved."

Klaus tilted his head at the thought, "Don't worry love. We'll find him and my siblings. If I don't i'm gonna rain this town in blood."

Mira grinned excitedly. "That's the best idea i've ever heard leave your mouth."

"Excuse me," Klaus narrowed his eyes. "My ideas are always great, thank you."

Mimi nodded with a grin, "Sure, love, keep telling yourself that." She mocked and left him dumbfounded as she strutted up to the bar, ordering a rum and coke for a change. Then made her way to where Klaus was now heading, to Elena and Damon.

"Mind if I tag along?" Mira asked him as she made her way beside him with her drink in hand.

"Well, I had no desire to do this alone." Klaus smirked at her, resting his hand on the small of her back. "Lead the way, angel."

The doppelgänger seemed to be rambling about something while Damon continued getting drunk and playing darts as the original duo interrupted them.

"Don't mind us."

"Klaus? Mira?" Elena breathlessly said as she stepped back trying to subtly get away from them.

"You gonna do this in the Grill? In front of everyone? It's a little beneath you, don't you think? Especially you Mira." Damon spoke, looking between the former lovers though his eyes trained on Mira for a second longer.

For a moment he felt the familiar feeling of guilt returning for the way he treated her before Klaus came to Mystic Falls. Maybe if he hadn't said and done what he did, she would be on his side right now, not Klaus'. Maybe he would still have his best friend. Yet that guilt was washed away as he watched Klaus and Mira smile at each other, she seemed like she had no remorse for what had happened between him and her, she was content with the way things were now. So why should he feel guilty?

"I have no idea what you mean, Damon." Mira feigned innocence with a shrug. "I'm just here to get a drink, I believe Klaus is here to do the same."

"Yes, just here to grab a drink with a mate." Klaus glanced back as one of his hybrids made his way between the hybrid-heretic duo. "Get a round in, would you Tony?" Elena's eyes widened when she recognised Klaus' hybrid Tony as the man that had been following her on her run early that morning.

"I'm surprised you both stuck around town long enough for happy hour." Damon said.

"Rebekah's missing. I'm starting to get rather antsy the longer she's gone. I want it sorted sooner rather than later." Mira spoke with her eyes narrowing between damon and elena trying to see if they give anything away at the mention of the blonde original.

Damon merely shrugged. "Cute blonde bombshell, psycho. Shouldn't be too hard to find."

"Truth is I've grown to rather like your little town. Think I might fancy a home here." Klaus said, stepping closer to the vampire and snatching a dart from his hand. "Oh I imagine you're wondering how does this affect you. The answer is: not in the slightest. As long as I get what I want and everyone behaves themselves you can go on living your little lives however you choose. You have my word."

Elena furrowed her brows angrily at him. "What more could you possibly want?"

"Well for starters, you can tell me where I might find Stefan." Klaus stepped threateningly towards the doppelgänger.

Damon scowled, moving in front of Elena protectively making Mira chuckle at the action. "Stefan skipped town the second he saved your ass."

Mira hummed, walking past them all and stealing the dart out of Klaus' hand. "Well isn't that disappointing." She threw the dart, hitting the centre with ease.

"Your brother stole from me. I need him found so I can take back what's mine."

"That sounds like a Klaus and Stefan problem." Elena tilted her head mockingly at the hybrid.

Klaus stared back at her before moving towards her only for Damon to step in between them, blocking Elena from Klaus' view. The hybrid only smiled at the raven-haired man before said man was pulled away from Elena by his hair, giving Klaus a clear view of her. "Well this is me broadening the scope, sweetheart."

Damon groaned in pain, looking up to see Mira was the one with the grip on his hair making him glare and shove her off of him. "You never know when to stop, do you?"

Mira scoffed, "Me? Please don't mix me up with yourself, Damon. It's quite insulting."

Elena sent the heretic a death stare. "What's your place in all of this, Mira? You got angry with Damon supposedly 'using you as a guard dog'. Now what? You've moved on to be Klaus'?" she taunted.

Mira simply tilted her head at the Gilbert girl with a blank look whilst Damon's eyes bounced between them. Klaus raised a brow at the doppelgänger in an irritated manner.

Suddenly the woman broke out into a laugh, taking them all by surprise. "Look at you growing a backbone. Standing up for Damon, huh." Elena stared at her in confusion. "I thought you were so set on getting Stefan back? Now that he is free and left you, are you moving onto the next Salvatore? Or are you simply going to try and have them both?"

  Elena's face fell. "Shut up."

"And you claim to be nothing like Katherine, the irony of that is beyond amusing." Mira eyed Elena up and down with a grin, "At least she had style." She finished off her drink, leaving the glass on a table, turning to Klaus. "I'm done here. You coming?"

Klaus nodded happily, holding his hand out for her, which she took and they left without so much of a glance to the solemn Elena and pissed off Damon.

━━━━━━━

A few hours later Damon was in his house pouring himself a drink before he turned around only to find Mira and Klaus walking in. Mira made her way to the couch, getting herself comfortable while Klaus remained standing. The hybrid and heretic were on a mission now to get the coffins back.

The vampire raised a brow at her and she simply shrugged. "Don't mind me." The raven-haired vampire could only roll his eyes at her, turning his attention back to Klaus.

"I think it's about time we had a drink, don't you?" Klaus said.

"I'd say we're overdue."

"Well, you've been so busy with all your plotting and scheming." the Mikaelson retorted.

Damon smirked, spitefully. "You know me. Never miss a chance to plan an epic failure."

"Those are your specialties," Mira nodded in agreement. "I've never witnessed one of your plans work."

Klaus chuckled, walking in with a taunting look aimed at the Salvatore. "Don't be so hard on yourself. Who could have guessed your own brother would betray you?"

"He has his moments." Damon hummed bitterly. "He might not have made it in time had your ex-girlfriend over here not stopped me first." he aimed his glare at Mira.

She pouted. "Is that all I am now? Klaus' ex? You wound me Damon. Or should I say Elena's string along?"

"I'm not in the mood for you, Mira." Damon sighed.

"So you say you have no idea of my sister's whereabouts?" Klaus intervened, questioning him once more.

"That's the thing with younger siblings. You just never know what they're gonna do." Damon let out a fake laugh. "Drink?" he offered, pouring a glass and handing it to the male original.

  "Cheers mate."

  "Down the hatch."

Mira eyed them with her face scrunched. "You two are making me feel awkward. I don't do awkward."

"Well, why don't you leave?" Damon remarked.

She put a hand to her chest, acting offended. "After everything i've done for you, you treat me like this? Talk about friendship." she grumbled under her breath.

Damon slammed his now empty glass on the table. "You wanna talk about friendship? Well, i've recently come to the realisation that you, Mira, wouldn't know the first thing about it."

"I wouldn't? You're one to talk." She retorted as she stood up to face him. "When have I ever turned my back on you, Damon? Even when I felt like I was just being used by you, I still showed up to save your ass every damn time. I would've done anything for you, you were my best friend. but then you let your little doppelgänger get in your ear and you came along making accusations instead of talking to me like a normal person."

"You lied!" Damon shouted at her, getting in her face. Klaus narrowed his eyes at the young vampire, silently daring him to touch her. "You watched us run around like headless chickens trying to figure out who Klaus was and the entire time you had all the answers we needed!"

"I never lied! I had no obligation to tell any of you anything. I knew nothing about the ritual, I knew nothing that could help any of you. I simply just knew who he was. Someone I had a past with who I hadn't seen in a thousand years. Someone who thought I was dead."

"And yet the minute he showed up, you stood beside him helping him ruin Elena and Stefan's lives." Damon spat with his jaw clenched and hands shaking. "Two little hybrid peas in a pod you two are."

Mira scoffed in disbelief, "Only because you turned your back on me first. I was only around to help because I cared about you but you didn't trust me, you wanted nothing to do with me, so what purpose would I have in saving a self righteous human and your goody two shoes of a brother." She watched as his face fell at her words. "Besides, Stefan's life was only ruined because you needed saving from a werewolf bite, so that one's on you, darling."

"Maybe we should have been plotting to use Mikael to kill you instead of Klaus." he spoke blankly, showing no emotion.

Mira simply smirked, "that probably would have been smarter of you all."

Damon was angered at her lack of emotion and without thought he sped at her to wrap his hand around her throat. He didn't get far though as Klaus wrapped his own hand around the Salvatore.

"Now mate. I've let you have your little spat but I draw the line at laying your hands on her." Klaus spoke, his expression calm yet his voice was menacing.

Damon surrendered, raising his hands admitting defeat. "I'm done."

"Good." Klaus smiled letting him go, turning to see Mira getting a drink without a care in the world. "Now back to it. You know, we've actually got a lot in common, you and I."

"Really? Well, yeah. Maybe we can bond over our mutual loathing of my brother. Why are you so mad at him? He stole something?" Damon wondered snatching the drink from Mira's hand earning a scowl.

"My family, the Originals. I had them daggered, boxed-up awaiting the day when I saw fit to wake them. And he went in and pinched the bloody lot."

Damon scoffed a chuckle. "Of course he did. Such a buzzkill, my baby bro. Well, I'd love to find him. Just the trouble is, I sure as hell don't work for you."

"You know, your drink stinks of vervain- so I can't compel you." Klaus said, amused. "There'd be no point in killing you, and I know Mira's moments away from doing just that, but you're actually the one with the most hope of getting me what I need. And yet it would seem a demonstration is in order. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough when I told you to find Stefan. Well, it seems you people respond best to displays of violence. Why don't you take this as an example of my reach?" Klaus pulled out his phone dialling a number and putting it to his ear. "There he is! So, that thing I told you to do...why don't you go ahead and get on with it?"

"Hm, seems things are getting interesting again." Mira smirked, raising her glass to Damon.

━━━━━━━

Mira found herself in the house Klaus was having renovated. There were compelled workers everyone. Klaus and his hybrid Mindy were walking through the rooms of the large mansion while Mira looked around.

"Compel the men to open up this wall. We need sun. I want a fortress not a dungeon." He ordered Mindy who simply nodded to him.

Mira walked in with Tyler following behind, "Look who I found."

"Here he is, man of the hour!" Klaus smiled.

"So everything went okay?" Tyler asked.

Klaus shrugged. "Tony ran down Alaric instead of Jeremy, but apples, oranges, message lands the same."

Klaus had grown impatient at the fact that no one could tell him where Stefan was so in return he compelled Jeremy to stand in the middle of the road while the hybrid Tony ran him over. But Alaric intervened and ended up being the one to be hit by the car.

Tyler frowned, baffled at Klaus' words. "You said you were sending them a warning."

"And I did. An effective one. Elena's family suffers, she is motivated to get me what I want." Klaus replied as if it were the most simple thing in the world.

"You couldn't have gotten Tony to run over Elena instead?" Mira mumbled, earning a look from both Tyler and Klaus. "What?"

Tyler shook his head at her, returning his gaze to his sire. "I didn't think that we'd actually have to kill anyone."

Klaus sighed. "Tyler, mate. What you are feeling is the remnant of a guilty conscience. I need you to get over it, okay? End of the day human life is just a means to an end. Our means to our end. You do well to remember that?"

Klaus left Tyler to think over his words, dragging Mira with him to another room.

"Who knew you could be so inspirational." Mira remarked sarcastically.

"I'm quite the inspiration, love." He smirked smugly.

Mira rolled her eyes. "right." She huffed looking out a window. "So is this the plan? You start having your hybrids kill people while we sit and wait?"

Klaus shrugged, "seems like a good plan to me."

The woman scoffed in his face. "Not very effective in my opinion."

"It will be, trust me."

"You do realise we wouldn't be in this mess if you undagerred your siblings three months ago when I told you too."

The hybrid furrowed his brows at her. "Why are you getting mad at me about this? They'd be undaggered right now if Stefan didn't decide to be vengeful. He's the one that bloody took them!"

Mira stared at him in utter disbelief. "You're the one that bloody daggered them and shoved them into coffins in the first fucking place! Carrying them around in a truck like their antique artefacts!"

"They did it to themselves," Klaus retorted.

"No. You did it." Mira seethed as she stepped closer to him. "And for what? Because they disobeyed you and you needed to have control over them. Do you know how pathetic that is?"

Klaus glowered his eyes at her, "how would you know why I've daggered them? It's not like you were around."

"Don't even go there," she groaned. "Do not turn this around on me. You won't win that fight, Klaus."

The two stared at each other in anger waiting for the other to break, neither of them backing down. They only broke the staring contest when Klaus' phone went off. He pulled it out glancing at the heretic once more as she stepped away from him with a deep breath.

"We have to go." Klaus declared, breaking the silence. Not waiting for Mira to reply or giving her context, he simply walked away.

━━━━━━━

They found themselves back at the boarding house. Not a word was spoken on the way over and they still stood in silence while Klaus knocked on the door.

Elena was the one to open the door, saying, "Thank you for coming."

Klaus waltzed in with Mira following and giving a look to the Gilbert. "I trust you have news of Stefan?" he said expectantly.

"I couldn't find him." Elena replied.

"Sure you couldn't," Mira mocked.

Elena glared at her like usual before saying. "But I have something else you both will want."

Mira raised a brow at her. "And what might that be?"

Elena said nothing as she led the two down to where the cellar of the house was. Mira and Klaus shared a look while Elena opened the cellar door. They came to find Rebekah faced down, in her red homecoming dress with a dagger in her back.

Mira's eyes widened, "You've got to be kidding me." She stared at Elena incredulously.

Klaus sighed, looking down at the blonde. "My poor sister. I can't turn my back on her for a moment."

Mira scoffed, "it seems she can't turn her back at all."

"You have Rebekah. A deal is a deal." Elena declared.

"The life of my sister in exchange for your brother? Yeah I'd say that's a bargain. Consider him spared."

"You should know I was the one that daggered her." Elena admitted. "When she wakes she'll come after me."

Mira chuckled falsely, crouching down to Rebekah. "As she should. I might even help her. you clearly never learn." Elena gulped taking a step back feeling the heat of the heretics stare. "You're lucky I don't rip your head off your body with my teeth right now."

"I can control Rebekah. I will do my best to keep Mira in check." Klaus assured, ignoring Mira's scorning gaze. "Besides, I still need your help finding Stefan."

"I told you I don't know where he is."

Mira ignored them both, pulling the dagger out of Rebekah's back and Klaus was quick to take it from her, earning a look of annoyance.

"You're lying." He replied knowingly to the human. "Fortunately you have no shortage of loved ones. If I don't find my family the question you should be asking yourself is who's gonna die next! Bonnie? Caroline? Damon? It's only a matter of time before Stefan gives me what I want."

Mira stood and slapped him in the back of his head, "mention Caroline again and i'll find a dagger that can put your little dog ass down."

"Easy, love. No harm will come to your precious Caroline." He raised his hand in mock surrender and she just eyed him.

"He doesn't care about me anymore." Elena announced. "You made sure of that. You turned him into a monster. Now he's your problem.

"I don't think he asked if Stefan cares about you, nor does he care about that." Mira remarked mockingly.

"I don't know where he is." Elena repeated firmly, squinting at the Heretic. "And just so you know I'm not the only one Rebekah wants dead. She knows what you did to your mother. She knows that you killed her." Elena gave a smug look, walking past the hybrid to the door. turning once more to say, "You two can let yourselves out."

Mira watched Klaus stare down at his sister in horror about Elena's words. She went to say something but he spoke first. "Let's go." He picked up Rebekah and sped out of the house, leaving Mira to sigh and follow once more.

━━━━━━━

Klaus had dropped Mira off at her home, returning to his house with the still decayed Rebekah. He walked into the room he had his sister laying on top of a table grey and dead, slowly coming back to life.

"Here we are, Rebekah." Klaus spoke to her. "Home sweet home. Only took a thousand years. And to think I was counting on you being here with me. But that's all ruined now, isn't it?" He watched her fingers start to twitch as her skin started to turn back to normal indicating that she was waking up. "I'm so sorry..." He stroked her cheek. "...sister. We'll meet again one day."

He lifted his arm, dagger in hand, preparing to put it back into his little sister's heart once more, but a hand holding his arm prevented him from doing so. He turned to see Mira standing there with a vicious glare. "I thought I dropped you home," he said.

"I had a feeling you'd do something stupid. Turns out I was right." The venom in her voice shook him a little.

"Mimi, love, what are you doing? Let go." He spoke sternly.

"What am I doing? What the fuck are you doing?"

Klaus turned to her in fury, her hand still holding his arm as he clenched his fist around the dagger. "What I have to! Rebekah knows something she was never suppose to, I can't risk waking her up."

"You mean how you killed your mother? I already knew about that Klaus, before Elena even said it." Klaus faltered, eyes widening at her words. "Rebekah told me. Nik, she's not angry about what you did but about the fact that you lied. She doesn't want you dead, although if you do what you're about to, she will. Don't put that dagger back in her for another 90 years to avoid the inevitable. You said you would undagger your family, this is where that starts."

"I have to do this." He once again went to stab the unconscious blonde but he didn't get the chance as the dagger flew out of his hand into Mira who caught it with ease. "Give it back." he demanded calmly but the rage was evident in his eyes.

"I'm not letting you do this to her anymore." Mira replied, looking down at the dagger in her hand and lighting it on fire.

"No!" Klaus exclaimed, stepping forward. It was too late, it had already begun melting in her hand. Klaus could only watch as she let the melting silver fall to the ground still on fire. "What have you done?"

"What I said I would. I told your sister that I wouldn't let this continue to be her life. I won't break that promise. Now you can stay here and wait for her to wake up to explain and apologise."

Klaus stared at her in complete shock.

"And if I don't hear from Rebekah within the next hour, she will be the least of your worries." She spoke, lividly and Klaus was very clearly taken aback at her anger. He could only watch with his jaw dropped and eyes wide as she walked out of his house.

She had a long day and he had pissed her off more than once, she needed him to learn that wasn't something anyone got away with. Not even him.

He turned to see Rebekah's skin almost back to its humanly colour, the veins and the grey disappearing even quicker than before.

He was screwed.

( author note )
I was never going to allow Rebekah to be shoved back into a box and neither was Mira! Klaus has been a terror to his siblings and Mira has returned to him as his own personal karma. his siblings are going to love getting to sit back and watch her put him in his place.

Hope you enjoyed the chapter!
