xxix. sunshine's birthday

Chapter 29 | Our Town

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

"Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you!" Was chanted loudly throughout the Forbes house as a certain young Blonde Vampire walked through the front door. "Happy Birthday dear Care Bear! Happy Birthday to you!"

Caroline stared at the three people in front of her with wide eyes while they stared back with matching grins. "What are you guys doing here?" the birthday girl chuckled, confused.

"Well you weren't answering your phone and you weren't at school so we brought your birthday surprise to you." Adelaide smiled, waving a sign that had 'happy birthday sunshine' written on it.

"And how did you manage to get a birthday hat on Mimi?" Caroline pointed out in amusement.

Mira rolled her eyes while Rebekah smirked. "That was me." The blonde original raised her hand in a mocking manner towards the brunette.

"You should have seen it," Addie laughed. "They were rolling around on the ground like fighting cats. I actually got it on video."

Mira groaned, crossing her arms. "Moving on," she said, walking towards Caroline and putting a tiara on her head. "Happy 18th, sunshine."

"Change into warmer clothes, Rebekah suggested s'mores so we're doing a camp fire." Adelaide announced.

"Don't forget Cake!" Rebekah exclaimed.

"And tequila," Mira smirked as she shook the bottle in her hand. "Lots of it."

Caroline smiled at them solemnly. "Thanks, guys. Really, um, I'm just not feeling my birthday this year."

Adelaide frowned. "You, Caroline Forbes, don't want to celebrate your birthday? Care, this day is all about you! Why the hell are you not feeling it?"

"Because, it's just a reminder that technically, I'm dead." Caroline deadpanned. "Look, I didn't even like 17. And the only point to being 17 is to get to 18. It's a filler year, I'm stuck in a filler year."

Rebekah sighed, shaking her head. "That doesn't mean you're stuck, caroline."

"Yeah it does, but it's okay. You know, it's all good, I'll be fine. But I just need some time to wallow in it."

Mira hummed, as she thought. "Alright, fair enough. But no one, especially you is wallowing tonight. I have another plan. One I think you'll enjoy."

━━━━━━━

A hybrid walked into Klaus' home with a blooded bag in hand. "What do you want me to do with her head?" He asked Klaus as he held up the bag that had a hybrid's head inside of it.

Klaus shrugged indifferently, "Just get rid of it. Burn it. I honestly don't care, Daniel."

Daniel nodded, walking away just as Tyler entered the room. "You called? I'm here. What happened?"

"What happened is Stefan had two paths in front of him and he chose the one that made me angry." Klaus explained to the Lockwood. "I need you to help me do something about that."

"Can't you just leave me out of it?" Tyler sighed.

Klaus raised his brows, "What would be the point in that?"

"Seriously man, can't you just get one of your other hybrids to do your bidding? I lost all my friends." Tyler expressed in annoyance.

The original suddenly smiled. "Right, your, uh, your friends. Um, about them...I need you to bite one of them. Preferably one that's a vampire."

"What?"

"Don't make me repeat myself."

"A hybrid bite will kill a vampire."

Klaus rolled his eyes. "Yeah. Yeah, I know exactly what it will do. Uh, Stefan pushed me too far, so I'm pushing back."

"I'm not hurting my friends, Klaus!" Tyler glared.

"Tyler, I've been supernaturally blessed with the good fortune of a sire bond to you. So, one could consider this me putting your undying loyalty to the test."

The young hybrid stepped up to his sire with determination. "What the hell is wrong with you? I'm not hurting any of my friends."

"All right. All right." Klaus moved back, throwing his hands up. "I'm disappointed, but you know, it's your choice, free will and all that. I'll find another way to strike at Stefan. You can go now."

━━━━━━━

Mira led the three blondes towards a crypt with a cunning smile on her face while the other girls looked around incredibly unsure.

"Anyone else find this a tad creepy?" Caroline shuddered, shining her torch.

"Well technically, we're all dead. But you, Caroline, clearly having properly accepted that. You don't need a birthday, you need a funeral. It's time you finally said goodbye to your old life, so that you can move on with your new one. Now we didn't get to meet the old Care Bear, but that doesn't mean we can't throw her a funeral."

Caroline grinned at the brunette, taking off her tiara. "Okay. Here lies Caroline Forbes..."

Adelaide began adding candles to the cake as she said, "Cheerleader, Miss Mystic Falls, third grade hopscotch champion as she loves to tell me..."

"Friend, daughter, overachiever..." Mira continued.

"Mean girl, sometimes, no offence. We've all been there." Rebekah joked.

"Ah, none taken." Caroline laughed.

"She was 17, and she had a really good life. Although some questionable friends. So rest in peace, so that she can move forward." Mira spoke, picking up the cake and walking towards Caroline with it.

"This is what you really need. What you've really needed since you became a vampire." Adelaide said, wrapping an arm around the birthday girl. "Amen, or cheers or whatever. Mims?"

Mira nodded, looking down at the candles and made them light up. "Okay, now quick, make a wish." Bekah encouraged excitedly, clapping her hands.

Mira held the cake out to Caroline, who closed her eyes, blew out the candles and made her wish.

━━━━━━━

The four girls sat around eating the cake and drinking alcohol. Mira had taken the bottle from Adelaide and started to chug it all.

"Alright, Mimi, save some for the rest of us." Adelaide chuckled, sharing a look with the other two blondes.

"Believe me, Ad's I need this more than you know, right now." Mira huffed.

Caroline frowned at her, "still trouble in paradise, huh?"

Mira furrowed her brows at her question. "What? I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Oh come on, Lettie, you may be a good liar but anyone can see right through that lie. Why don't you just call my idiotic twat of a brother?" Rebekah mused as she took the bottle of tequila from the heretic and finished it off.

"I don't want to talk to him." Mira retorted horribly. "Like you said, he's an idiotic twat."

"That you care about deeply." Addie smirked. "You've been miserable ever since you had that fight and melted his dagger."

"Thank you again for that." Rebekah grinned. "I appreciate you sticking up for me, Lettie. I love you more than you know for it. But you don't have to ignore Nik for me, just talk to him and sort it out. If I can do it after he tried to dagger me once again, you can definitely do it."

Caroline suddenly perked up. "They're right, Mimi. I can only guess Klaus is as miserable as you've been considering you haven't answered his 50 phone calls, so just talk to him. Sort it out, no use being angry at him forever because that's a long time for us all."

Mira threw her head back with a groan, "you three are killing my buzz right now. I need more alcohol or cake."

Adelaide pulled a face. "We're out of both."

"Well there goes the party," Rebekah rolled her eyes.

"We also have no one to bring us anything. Everyone in town hates you guys." Caroline frowned. "No offense."

"There's Tyler." Mira shrugged.

Adelaide pulled her uncomfortable face. "Why Tyler? Please anyone but Tyler. Call Klaus or something."

"Definitely not Nik." Mimi quickly shook her head.

"Why would Tyler bring us more alcohol?" Caroline asked in confusion. The hybrid wasn't even speaking to her as of recently.

"He's sired to do whatever he can to keep Klaus happy and the way to keep him happy is to keep Mira happy, so Tyler also does whatever Mira says," Rebekah explained plainly.

Caroline giggled. "That's so cute."

Adelaide scrunched up her face at her. "Is it?"

"Rebekah, you have Tyler's number. Text him."

The blonde original shrugged. "alright."

━━━━━━━

"Caroline, i have some people that wanna talk to you." Mira smiled as she pulled her phone away from her ear and put it on loud speaker.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARE BEAR!" was shouted from the other line causing all four vampires to flinch at the loudness.

Caroline giggled. "Is that Matteo and Ellie?" she asked, receiving a nod as she took the phone. "Thank you guys. I wish you were here!"

"We do to," Ellie smiled sadly. "We hear we're missing not only a birthday but a funeral."

"I bet it sucks." Matteo grinned. "Only because i'm not there of course. Let me tell you Caroline, I know how to get not only a party but a funeral going as well."

"I don't think that's something to brag about Theo," Rebekah mused.

"Hush Original blondie. No one asked you." Matteo pouted.

"No you hush Matteo." Ellie rolled her eyes. "Anyway, we love you all and we promise to back soon!"

  "Love you, Ellie!"

Matteo looked at the phone in disbelief. "Excuse you lot. What about me?"

Mira took the phone back, preparing to hang up. "You have plenty of love for yourself, dumbass. You don't need it from anyone else."

"My own sister," Theo gasped dramatically. "I can't take this. I'm hanging up." he didn't give anyone the chance to reply as he hung up the phone.

Adelaide shook her head, chuckling. "That boy is something else."

"Tell me about it." Mira rolled her eyes playfully.

"Tyler's here girls! Who's going to get the alcohol off him because I'm not letting Nik's lap dog come in here to ruin the vibe." Rebekah announced.

Everyone looked at Mira considering it was her suggestion to text him. The heretic pouted, "don't make me go out there, it's awkward between me and him. I killed him, remember."

Adelaide shrugged and nodded. "She has a point."

"I texted him so...not me. Caroline knows him best." Rebekah held her hands up in surrender.

Caroline glanced around before throwing her head back with a groan. "Fine, but he better not stick around. I am not in the mood."

"Scream if he does anything. I'll rip his werewolf paws off his body." Adelaide smiled innocently as she spoke her threatening words.

Mira shook her head at her friend. "Oh, I've taught you well."

Caroline's eyes widened at them. "You two scare me." With that she sought off to see Tyler and get the drinks.

"Can we go murder someone? Preferably a certain human doppelgänger." Rebekah requested, still angered at the fact that Elena literally stabbed her in the back.

Adelaide held out her arms in amazement, "That is the best suggestion you've ever made barbie vamp."

"I'd definitely be all in, mainly to piss off Klaus, but we can't kill Caroline's childhood friend on her birthday." Mira frowned.

Rebekah huffed, sitting down and crossing her arms like a child. "I guess you're right."

Adelaide too pouted about it but nodded nonetheless. After a few moments of comfortable silence, the Rymer woman looked outside in confusion. "What's taking her so long?"

━━━━━━━

Caroline walked out of the crypt and soon spotted Tyler who was leaning against a tree with a bag full of bodies. "Hey," she greeted quietly.

Tyler looked up at her and smiled sadly. "Hey Caroline, happy birthday."

"Thank you." An awkward silence overtook and they glanced around tensely before Caroline broke it. "So did you bring the tequila?"

"Oh, yeah." Tyler exclaimed, having forgotten what he was there for. "here you go," he handed her the bag.

"Thanks," Caroline said again. "Well i'm gonna get back to the party."

"Wait Care." Tyler stopped her. "Can I talk to you for a sec? It's kind of important."

Caroline sighed, turning to face him again. "What's up?"

"I'm sorry for being such a dick after what happened at Elena's party. You taking off the next morning and then avoiding me just kind of made me angry. Also i'm sorry for not showing up to save you after my mom handed you over to your dad to be tortured."

Caroline stopped herself from rolling her eyes and instead replied, "Tyler, it's okay. I'm sorry for leaving and avoiding you instead of being honest. What happened between us the night of Elena's birthday was a mistake."

Tyler shook his head, "Don't say that. It wasn't a mistake Caroline. Not to me."

"Well, it was to me. I don't like you like that Tyler. It was a one time thing, okay. Look, I don't know how you feel about me but if you do expect anything else to happen between us I need you to understand it won't. You just have to accept that and move on."

"I'm not moving on from anything. I love you."

Caroline's eyes widened comically as he stepped closer to her. "What?"

"I love you, can't you see that?"

"But I don't love you. Tyler, you're my friend and that's all you're ever going to be. I'm sorry." Caroline felt horrible hurting him like this but she couldn't pretend to feel something for him when she didn't.

Tyler let out a deep breath as his heart sank. "It's okay. I understand. I just...had to at least say it."

Caroline pursed her lips, feeling bad for the boy. "Come here." She wrapped her arms around his shoulders as he slid around her waist, giving him a comforting hug.

Tyler felt the tension leave his body as they hugged. He had so much going on in his life, he needed it more than even himself knew. His face dropped down to the crook of her neck.

What happened next was completely unintentional to Tyler. He had no idea what he was doing and he sure as hell didn't mean it but before he even knew what was happening he was biting into the blonde vampire's neck.

"Ow!" Caroline cried, quickly pushing him away from her. "What the hell? What just happened?"

Tyler stared at her and the mark on her neck in complete and utter shock. "Oh, no."

"Did you just bite me?" Caroline exclaimed.

"Oh my god. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Tyler repeated frantically, moving away from her.

Caroline fell back into a tree and slid down it as she breathed heavily. "Oh my god! Just get away from me! Get away from me!"

Tyler continued to stare at her in disbelief before he fled, leaving her on her own in the middle of the woods with a werewolf bite on her neck.

━━━━━━━

"Caroline!! Where the hell are you?!" Mira, Rebekah and Adelaide called out as they walked through the woods looking for the younger blonde who didn't come back.

"Where could she be?" Mira groaned.

Rebekah raised a brow, "you don't think she took off with Tyler to hook up again, do you?"

Those words made Adelaide glare at nothing in particular. "She better not have."

Mira rolled her eyes. "Please, she wouldn't. Caroline regrets the first time and swore it was gonna be the only time it ever happened."

Rebekah tilted her head, smirking. "You're right. Not to mention we've all seen the way her and Addie stare at each other."

Adelaide's face dropped. "What the hell are you talking about?"

"Don't play dumb, Adelaide. You know what she's talking about." Mira huffed.

Adelaide rolled her eyes. "I'm not having this conversation with you two right now. I'm gonna go search for her somewhere else." She didn't give the original girls a moment to reply as she sped off in a different direction.

"Oh sweet denial. You gotta love it." Mira chuckled.

Rebekah gave a look to her best friend. "Like you're one to talk."

It was Mira's turn to frown. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"Come on Lettie, we both know you're denying and avoiding my brother for a specific reason."

Mira threw her hands up in frustration. "I'm not denying anything considering there is nothing to deny. And I'm avoiding him because he tried to stick that dagger back into you for a pathetic reason."

"Ok, maybe that is why you're avoiding him but you're also denying to yourself how you feel about him." Rebekah said, knowingly.

"Rebekah, there are zero feelings to deny. We're..." She trailed off, not sure what to say while Rebekah smirked. "Ok, I'm not entirely sure what we are. Exes, friends, i guess," she visibly cringed at the words. "I don't know! But I'm not denying any feelings, alright?"

"Whatever you say, Lettie."

Mira could tell Rebekah didn't believe what she was saying and it frustrated her. "Nothing is going to happen between us Rebekah. We've been there, done that. We all know it didn't end well the first time round, so why try again."

Rebekah furrowed her brows at the sadness in Mira's tone and words, unfortunately before she had the chance to reply back they both heard a scream.

Adelaide's scream.

━━━━━━━

Mira stormed into Klaus' house with anger radiating off of her in waves. Rebekah followed close behind her. The heretic had a murderous look in her eyes that had his hybrids shivering in fear as they moved out of her way. She found the original hybrid standing in his living room staring at the fire burning in the fireplace.

"What did you do? What the fuck did you do!" she screamed in frustration making Klaus spin around in shock at the sight of the vicious woman.

"Mimi, angel. What on earth are you talking about?" He asked, genuinely confused.

"Oh, don't play dumb with me Mikaelson. You can't sweet talk your way out of this one."

"Love, I have no idea what you're speaking about." He sat his drink that he held down as he approached her while she paced the room.

"Caroline, Klaus. That's what she's talking about." Rebekah explained calmly, though the look of anger on her face showed she was feeling anything but calm.

"What about her?"

"Tyler bit her. Am I just supposed to believe you had nothing to do with that?" Mira raised her brows at him.

Klaus had a look of shock on his face as he registered what had happened. "I didn't tell him to bite her."

"Yeah, well he did. And now she's in pain and dying so you have to save her." Mira demanded.

Klaus rolled his eyes in annoyance. "I don't have to do anything. Stefan has been playing me for a fool so I had to show him that this isn't some silly little game. Now I didn't tell Tyler to bite Caroline, I simply told him to bite one of his friends. I guess Caroline unfortunately fell under that category. She was simply collateral, Mimi, no hard feelings."

Before Mira even had time to process his words, she was recoiling her hand and slapping him across the face with all her strength. Rebekah's mouth dropped as she watched the scene in front of her in disbelief. "You asshole! Caroline is not collateral. She is the purest person in this stupid town and she is the last person that deserves to be hurt because of fucking Stefan. Now you're gonna go over there and save her or so help me god Niklaus Mikaelson, Stefan Salvatore will be the least of your worries."

He held the side of his face where she had slapped him as he stared at her with wide eyes.

"You think you're some kind of untouchable being Klaus? Let me tell you something, I can send you straight to hell with a snap of my fingers." She threatened in a low tone.

"I—"

She held up her hand, interrupting him before he even begun. "I don't wanna hear another word leave your mouth. Adelaide is taking Caroline to her house. Now you better be there within the next twenty minutes max or we're gonna have serious problems." With that she spun on her heels and stormed out.

Rebekah stayed in her spot with a disbelieving expression on her face as she replayed in her mind what she just witnessed. "Well, we always knew you had met your match with her."

Klaus' slightly fearful demeanour that his ex lover brought out dropped back into his careless one. "Don't start Rebekah." he warned her in irritation and she rolled her eyes.

"You just got her back Nik and already you're pushing her further and further away. Think about that the next time you try to hurt someone else she cares about." Rebekah said before she walked away.

In anger Klaus picked up his forgotten glass and threw it at the wall. Running his hands through his hair, he looked back at the spot Mira had just stood, threatening him like it was nothing, wondering what the hell he had gotten himself into.

━━━━━━━

Adelaide walked towards the front door of the Forbes house, seeing Klaus on the other side. She opened the door glaring at him but there were visible tears in her eyes.

"I'm here to help her," He said in a quiet tone.

"That doesn't change what you've done." She responded.

"It wasn't her I wanted to be harmed. That wasn't what I wanted Tyler to do," He tried to explain.

Adelaide huffed, crossing her arms. "Maybe next time make your orders more direct."

"I just want to help, Adelaide. My blood will heal her. Please, ask the Sheriff to invite me inside."

Liz walked out, making herself known to the hybrid. "I know how this game works. You want something in return."

Klaus simply shook his head. "Just your support. If it makes you feel more comfortable, I can give my blood to Adelaide to give it to your daughter."

Mira walked out of Caroline's room, instantly making eye contact with Klaus. "Let him in. He needs to be the one to do this."

Liz glanced at Mira with a hesitant look to which Mira nodded in reassurance and Liz turned back to the hybrid. "Come in."

Klaus came walking past them all, his eyes struggling to leave Mira's disappointed ones as he passed her, going into Caroline's room.

━━━━━━━

Klaus exited the house after healing the vampire, shutting the door softly behind him, leaving Adelaide and Liz to tend to the recovering Caroline.

He paused in his step as he noticed Mira sitting on the porch steps, staring off into the night.

"Is she okay?" The heretic asked without facing him.

Klaus stayed behind her, responding. "Good as new." Mira smiled to herself in relief, knowing Caroline was going to be fine. "I'm sorry," he whispered.

Mira sighed, "I know."

"Not just for Caroline but Rebekah too."

"I know." She repeated.

She stood up facing him, going to walk past him back into the house but the man wrapped his hand around her wrist preventing her from walking away from him again. "Mimi..." he muttered softly.

"Don't." She gently pulled her arm out of his grip. "It's been a long night."

He simply looked down before glancing up and meeting her eyes. "I keep disappointing you."

She softly shook her head, her anger from earlier having visibly turned into exhaustion. "You keep hurting people I care about. In return, that hurts me."

"That's what I do, Mimi. I hurt people. It's just who I am, who i've become. You have to understand that." He spoke in a low tone, the atmosphere around them quickly growing thick.

"I do." She nodded to herself, breaking their eye contact. "But what you have to understand is that I won't stand by and just let you keep doing that. Not to the people I love, that includes your siblings. You have to accept that if you want me to be in your life then I'm going to stand up to you when you do something foolish." He's eyes never strayed from hers as she spoke softly. "The way life has been for you for the past millennium won't continue to be the same with me around Nik. You don't have to be alone, it doesn't always have to be you against the world. You have to learn to let people in, you have to let me in. Or we may as well go back to how it's been. Me being dead to you."

Klaus clenched his jaw as he listened to her. He stepped closer to her, resting his hand softly on her cheek. "I don't want that. I won't have that."

She smiled up at him sadly, resting her own hand on top of his. "Then it's time for you to grow up." She pulled his hand away from her face, slowly letting it slip through her grasp as she walked past him back into the house.

━━━━━━━

Mira walked down the stairs of her home the next morning. Her mood noticeably down as the draining night before was still taking a toll on her.

She came to find Rebekah sitting at the kitchen counter on her phone. "Morning," she said.

"Good morning, Lettie." The blonde replied.

"Where's Adelaide?" Mira asked.

"Still at Caroline's house. She refuses to leave until Caroline's up and back to her normal self."

Mira chuckled to herself. "Of course she does."

"How are you going?"

The heretic turned to her quizzically, "Fine...why?"

"Just asking," Rebekah shrugged in response. "Anyways, I'm off. I brought you breakfast, it's in the fridge waiting to be heated up. There's also a fresh blood bag in there for you."

"Thanks." Mira smiled softly at her. "Where are you off to?"

Rebekah seemed hesitant to respond but did nonetheless. "Nik's house. I promised I'd help him come up with ways to get our siblings back and the sooner we do the better."

Mira nodded to her words. "Okay. I'm just gonna stay home today, I need a break from everyone."

"Understandable. Well, enjoy breakfast. I'll see you later." Rebekah prepared herself to leave before she paused walking back over to the counter. "I was told to make sure you got this." She set down a little, navy blue, rectangular, velvet-covered box before smiling and walking out of the house.

Mira stared at the box with uncertainty. Her eyes narrowed as she walked over and picked it up. She pulled out and turned over the small note that was attached to it. It read, 'I hope you'll stick around to grow with me, together...-Yours always, Nik.'

Opening the box, inside was a beautiful and expensive-looking gold bracelet with diamonds. Mira pulled it out staring at it unknowingly with a small loving smile on her face.
