The Spotlight
Mumbo's Perspective-
Mumbo had been assigned the theatre page and since the class was getting started on their play to put on in November, Mumbo got to go take pictures of them rehearsing.
"I want pictures of the actual play as well, but it's good to have some backstage stuff, you know?" Mr. Raymond said as Mumbo grabbed the school camera.
"Right." Mumbo nodded, checking the batter and making sure the shutter speed was set correctly.
"I already texted Mr. C and he said it was fine for you to go down there. Try and be back before the end of class."
"Okay." Mumbo smiles, walking to the door.
"Oh-! Wait hang on!"
Mumbo looked over his shoulder and a boy with dirty blonde hair and an oversized red sweater walked over.
"This is Grian, he's gonna be shadowing you. I want you to show him the ropes since he's doing the history page." Mr. Raymond said.
Mumbo looked down at Grian, smiling nervously.
"Hi. So uh- do you know how to work a DSLR camera?" Mumbo asked.
"I know the basics." Grian shrugged, "I took creative photo."
Mumbo's eyes lit up, "Oh! You must've been in photo one last year. Wait- what grade are you in?"
"I'm a junior, same as you."
Mumbo tilted his head. "How have I never met you?" He asked.
"I was a...homeschooled kid." Grian said, blushing a bit out of embarrassment.
Mumbo hummed and nodded.
"Well uh- nice to meet you. Wanna head over to the auditorium?"
Grian nodded and the two left the art building.
They got to the auditorium and Mr. C was taking attendance. He saw the boys and nodded at them, waving.
"Hey, do you mind if I get some pictures backstage?" Mumbo asked.
"It's fine, you can do whatever. On stage, off, whatever you can get pictures off. Just try not to get in the way of the action, okay?"
"Got it." Grian nods.
Mr. C went through a few instructions before walking up to the box, and the run through was in full action.
Mumbo sat in the front row, getting a couple pictures of Scar as he said his lines. He then glanced over at Grian and helped him set the ISO as the last person who borrowed the camera changed it.
"Don't you see? This can change all of humanity and generations to come!!" Scar said in a cheerful voice.
Mumbo tried not to chuckle; Scar really did do the role perfectly.
Throughout the play, Mumbo snuck backstage and was standing next to a guy who handled the curtain.
He closed it and the guy playing Marty sighed in relief, walking offstage.
Mumbo got a picture of the backstage crew setting up the new scene. Marty walked back on stage and in the middle of doing his line, he saw Mumbo raise his camera and stopped in the middle of his sentence, posing.
Mumbo face palmed and watched as Marty got right back into his lines, not even looking embarrassed or ashamed.
The boy behind Mumbo snickered.
"You have to put that in the yearbook." He whispered.
Later (Martyn's Perspective)-
"Dude, theatre? I knew I told you to get more involved in stuff, but I wasn't expecting that." Cooper said.
"Me neither!! This wasn't supposed to happen."
"So are you playing the main character?"
"Yeah actually, it's kinda crazy."
"When's your show, I'll try and come down." Cooper said, taking out his phone.
Martyn looked embarrassed, "N-no! You don't gotta do that."
"You seriously think I'm gonna miss out on the best opportunity to embarrass you in the future?"
Martyn chuckled and Cooper smiled.
"Seriously though, I wanna be there to support you. So come on, when is it?"
"November 14 and 15, I'm performing the second night."
Cooper hummed and typed it down.
"Jimmy's doing the backstage work, and we mess around sometimes." Martyn said, "We tried to get Grian to sign up, but he didn't want to."
Cooper chuckled, "I mean, I wouldn't either. Theatre's a lot of work."
"That's fair. I've just been improving most of the scenes and luckily the co-director hasn't gotten on my case about it cause I cover it up well."
"You should still memorize your lines though. Or you can let me get video of you stuttering; up to you." Cooper shrugged and Martyn laughed.
"Wow thanks man."
"You're welcome." Cooper smirked, folding his arms behind his head.
Martyn smiled and Cooper chuckled.
"I hope you have fun this year and try not to be a complete ass to the other actors."
