Chapter 12

Olivia had found a job over the course of the last month, finding herself waking up at seven every morning to work at the arcade. Normally, she wouldn't mind, but there was always Keith who tried flirting and going on dates with her, which she immediatly turned down.

But tonight, she had been on break so she could spend time with the boys, who were all obsessed with the game Dig Dug, Dustin having the highest score on the board. Olivia would always encourage the curly-haired boy while he was playing, since she knew the severity of it to him.

"Oh, Jesus! I'm in uncharted territory here, guys." Dustinn pointed out, Olivia leaning against the arcade game as she watched Dustin play while Lucas, Will and Mike were surrounding him.

"Down! Down! Down!" The boys suddenly started shouting, Dustin's eyes going wide.

"I'm going! I'm going!" He shouted back. Olivia had to admit, she got addicted over the course of the past two months since it was the one of the only games the boys would play besides Dig Dug.

The boys began to cheer in excitement as it seemed to be Dustin winning the round, then all of the sudden his player had been killed and held his fist to his mouth in shock after yelling at the boys to shut up.

"No! No! No! I hate this overpriced bullshit!" Olivia snorted a laugh at how angry he could get.

"Hey, dude. Chill out, okay?" Olivia tilted her head in suggestion, but the boy kept yelling a string of curse words.

"You're not nimble enough. But you'll get there one day." Lucas mocked with a smirk as he shrugged, Dustin fuming with anger from beside him and the other boys. "But until then, Princess Daphne is still mine." Lucas smiled.

"Whatever." Dustin smacked the game. "I'm still tops on Centipede and Dig Dug." He stated.

"You sure about that?" They all turned at the sound of a voice, Olivia sighing the moment her eyes laid on Keith, who was holding his traditional bag of cheeto puffs. The boy's faces all fell into annoyance as they looked at the boy.

"Sure about what?" Dustin questioned worriedly. When Keith chewed a cheeto puff without saying anything, Dustin shoved past his friends and torwards Dug Dug. Mike, Will, Olivia and Lucas all ran after Dustin, who was screaming "no" repeatedly as he saw the new name taking up first place. Madmax.

"751,300 points!" Will shouted with a smile.

"That's impossible." Mike grimaced.

"Who's MadMax?" Dustin questioned, turning torwards Keith.

"Better than you." Keith shrugged. Dustin stuck his middle finger up at the boy, clearly annoyed with his response.

"Is it you?" Will questioned, pointing his finger at Keith with wide eyes.

The boy scoffed, looking at them with annoyance. "You know I despise Dig Dug." He told them as if he was defended by the suggestion.

"Then who is it?" Olivia questioned, shrugging a him.

"Yeah, spill it, Keith." Dustin agreed with Olivia.

"You want information, then I need something in return." He said, looking over at Olivia and Mike. She already knew what he was doing, the boys quickly turning their heads to Mike.

"No, no, no. No way. You're not getting a date with her." Mike shook his head, referring to Nancy.

"Mike, come on. Just get him the date." Lucas urged, earning a slap in the back of the head from Olivia, knowing that if it was her she wouldn't like him to say something like that.

"I'm not prostituting my sister!" Mike shouted.

Keith then looked over at Olivia, who quickly sighed. The boys all looked over at her. "I'm not going on a date with you!" She shouted. "Yeah, 'cause she likes Steve." Lucas suddenly said with a smirk, Olivia clenching her jaw at the boy as she pinched the bridge of her nose, Keith, Dustin, Mike and Will all staring at her with dropped jaws.

Olivia sighed before the boys and Keith began arguing, while Olivia turned to see Will no longer with the group. She frowned before going outside after him, leaving the kids to argue.

She put her hand on his shoulder, causing him to flinch. "Hey, you okay?" She questioned, leaning down to see his face.

He nodded shakily before he calmed down his breathing. "Yeah, yeah, I thought I heard something." Olivia nodded with drawn eyebrows, knowing something was wrong, but she didn't know what to do and she didn't want to bring up the Upside Down or any of his trauma.

"Okay. Come on, let's go back inside." She told him before they started walking back inside, her hand still on his shoudler.

While Steve and Nancy sat in his car revising his essay, he couldn't help but let his eyes follow Olivia, who was walking torwards the school with her head down, wearing jeans and a white sweater. She had another nightmare that morning before leaving for school, still not talking to her mother about it.

Just as Olivia was going to keep walking, she heard someone walking up to her, the footsteps pounding behind her. She turned to see a boy with blonde curly hair that went to his shoulders and a cigarette in his mouth. She raised her brows as she looked at him take his sunglasses off and slid them on his shirt.

"You're a sight for sore eyes." Olivia drew her brows together in confusion.

"I'm sorry?" She muttered, turning to look at him. Steve looked at her from his car, his jaw clenched as the boy walked with her, a smile on both of their faces.

"The names Billy Hargrove." He held his hand out, Olivia reluctantly shaking it.

"I'm Olivia." The dark-haired girl introduces herself, slowly shaking her hand before pulling away. "Um, are you new here?" Olivia questioned, earning a hum from him as he nodded.

"Okay, Billy, um... It was nice to meet you and everything but, like, I don't want to sound mean but I have to go." She muttered, beginning to walk backwards the opposite way of him.

"No worries. I'll see you tonight." Olivia immediatly frowned, realizing how optomisitic he was, and she clearly wasn't enjoying it.

"You will?" She question as she stopped walking as she crossed her arms, giving him an annoyed glance.

"Well, that is if you'll go on a date with me." Olivia scoffed, shaking her head with a grimace before walking away torwards the school, shaking her head as she rolled her eyes. She had to deal with Keith, and now she had to deal with a guy she hadn't met who was by the looks of it, a player.

Steve clenched his jaw from the car, grunting before grabbing his bag and walking with Nancy. He felt guilty for feeling jealous while in a relationship, even thought she was just his best friend and nothing more. But there were times where he wanted to be more and could never find the courage to say anything. She is the only one who could make him laugh in completely serious or depressing times. She was the only one who he could mess around with without hurting her feelings. She was the only one he could ever truly love.

As the day went on, Olivia found herself getting even more jealous as she saw Steve and Nancy together, but she also had a small part in her that was happy for them.

As she walked down the hall, she felt someone grab her shoulders and shout at her. She turned her head quickly to see Nancy walk up to her with a smile, Jonathan walking up to her on the other side.

Nancy shoved a paper into Olivia's hands. On it, she read, Tina's Halloween Bash, come get sheet faced.

Olivia snorted a laugh before putting the orange paper back in Nancy's hands, watching as the light-haired girl whined. "Come on, Liv. It'll be fun."

"Wearing a costume and getting drunk?" Olivia questioned with a tilted head. "No. Getting drunk will be fun, but not so much dressing up. Besides, my mom wants he home tonight."

"Uh, boring." Nancy retorted. "Come on, please. You don't even have to dress up, you just have to show up." When Olivia shook her head with pursed lips, Nancy sighed.

Nancy groaned before leaning forward to see Jonathan before pushing the paper in front of him. "You're coming to this." She then said.

"'Come and get sheet faced.' No I'm not." Jonathan smirked, Olivia smiling.

"See, I'm not the only boring one here." Jonathan scoffed as Olivia said that, her laughing between the two.

"I can't let you two sit all alone Halloween. That's just not acceptable." Nancy defended herself, earning a scoff from Olivia.

"I already said my mom wants me home. So, technically, I'm not alone." She shrugged, taking the paper from Jonathan and giving it back to Nancy.

"Well, you can relax. I'm not gonna be alone." Jonathan added on, leaning forward to look at Nancy. "I'm going trick-or-treating with Will." Jonathan defended, shrugging.

"No offense, but I would actually much rather go trick-or-treating with the kids than go to a party full of asshats and cheerleaders. Sorry, Nance." Olivia shrugged, pursing her lips.

"All night?" Nancy questioned the two, who both simply replied with, "Yeah."

"No, no way. You're gonna be home by 8:00, listening to the Talking Heads and reading Vonnegut or something." Nancy predicted, looking at Jonathan. "And you, you would just be sitting on the couch with your mom. Didn't you tell me that your dad was still gone and your house didn't feel, and I quote, 'comforting'?"

Olivia sighed, dropping her head back. "Yes, yes, Nancy, I did say that. But, for the record, the party would probably just feel worse."

"Sounds like a nice night." Jonathan than muttered from the other side of Olivia, still thinking about what Nancy said.

"Jonathan, just come. I mean, who knows you might even, like, meet someone. And Liv, step out of your comfort zone. I heard Billy has a thing for you." Nancy bounced her brows in excitement.

"Okay, first of all, ew. Second of all, Billy doesn't like me, he wanted to get in my pants. Third of all, I like my comfort zone." Olivia said with a fake pout, pretending to be offended.

Nancy suddenly shrieked as Steve lifted her up and spun her around. Jonathan and Olivia both sighed, rolling their eyes before walking away together. It was no secret that Olivia liked Steve and Jonathan liked Nancy, and even if they didn't admit it, the two secretly would sulk together because they both couldn't have someone that they loved.

As Olivia and Jonathan walked off, she looked up at him. "Hey, if you go to this sheet faced shit, I'll go too." Jonathan smiled before nodding.

"Yeah, yeah, okay. Okay, I'll go, but you better not bail on me." Olivia held her hand up defensively.

"Hey, a promise is a promise." The two smiled at each other before walking off to their next class together, both of them trying to take Nancy and Steve off of their minds.

***

Jonathan had picked up Olivia from her house since they promised they would go together. Olivia walked out of the house with her hair curled, wearing a leather jacket and her usual jeans and a white tank top. She slipped on her black boots as she walked out of the car, hopping on one foot.

When she got in the car, he raised an eye brow at her. "What?"

"What are you supposed to be?" He questioned, looking at her clothes. She shrugged, buckling herself in before turning to him.

"How about someone who doesn't give a shit." She shrugged again, Jonathan laughing in agreement.

"Yeah, me too." The two laughed before he drove out of her driveway and down the road, Olivia putting her chin in her hand before leaning on the window, listening to the radio slightly playing music.

When they got to the house, Olivia's jaw fell open at the amount of people outside. Jonathan ended up having to park down the road before they got out, walking to the house.

"Let's turn around." Olivia joked, Jonathan shrugging in agreement, basically saying, 'why not?' Once they finally reached the house, Olivia and Jonathan sighed,  stopping before slowly walking torwards the house, the girl giving him a look of no turning back.

Olivia turned her head to see Billy on the keg stand, doing a hand stand as the crowd counted to forty-two. When the curly-haired boy saw her, he smiled, putting his toothpick back into his mouth.

"Hey, Olivia."He smiled, looking over at Jonathan, who seemed to be weirded out by the way Billy was looking at Olivia.

She turned her head as she rolled her eyes, pushing Jonathan in front of her as they continued walking into the house. The two walked into the house, looking around in shock at how many people were filling the house.

Olivia sighed before turning to Jonathan. "I'm gonna get a drink. Do you want anything?" She questioned, raising her voice so he could hear her.

"Uh, yeah, anything they have." He matched her tone before the dark-haired girl nodded, walking off into the kitchen. Her annoyed look turned into a smile as she spotted Nancy, who was pouring herself a drink.

"Hey! Y-You came! I have... m-missed you so much!" Nancy's words were slurred as she spoke, Olivia raising her brows knowingly.

"Nance, are you drunk? How many of these have you had?" Olivia questioned, getting her own drink.

"Oh, uh... I don't know, like, three? I-I don't..." Nancy muttered, looking down at the drink in confusion.

"Uh, Nancy, I think you should slow down." Olivia said, trying to grab the drink from her friend as she grew worried for how drunk Nancy was going to get.

"No, no, no, no. I'm-I'm fine." Nancy shook her head, pulling the drink away before downing the rest of it. Olivia pinched the bridge of her nose before cursing under her breath, looking around the house for Steve, who seemed to be nowhere in her sight.

"Okay. Uh, Nance. Just- come with me." Olivia said, looking around for Steve.

"No, no. I'm gonna stay here." Nancy nodded, Olivia groaning before trying to pull Nancy away from getting another refill. "Liv, just- just leave it!" Olivia let go of Nancy's arm, sighing with her hands up.

"Fine. Whatever." She muttered, walking away with a sigh before chugging her punch, which some guy had told her was 'pure fuel'.

When she returned with a drink for Jonathan, he was nowhere to be found. "Are you shitting me?" She muttered, walking around in annoyance while carrying his drinks around, waiting for the moment when she found Jonathan.

Olivia sighed, realizing it was a bad idea to leave her friend knowing she was drunk and clearly couldn't think straight. She started walking back to the kitchen, finding Nancy still drinking. Olivia hoisted herself up on the counter, sitting on it while watching Nancy.

"Hey, you're back. Am I allowed to have another one, Mom?" Nancy questioned snarky, titling her head at Olivia.

"Nance, I was just trying to look out for you." Olivia hunched her shoulders. "Sorry." Olivia said flatly, drinking from her cup.

Steve had walked up to them, his glasses in his mouth and him wearing all black. Olivia had to admit, she thought he looked hot as he walked up to them with a smile.

"Hey... Whoa, whoa! Hey... Whoa, whoa, whoa! Take it easy." Steve told Nancy, holding his hand out in front of her. "Take it easy. Nance, Nance, Nance..."

"We're just being stupid teenagers for the night. Wasn't that the deal?" Olivia watched as they argued, her brows raised as she sat back. She hadn't known what happened between them, since Steve didn't talk to her about any of his relationships anymore, but she knew something was clearly wrong.

Nancy then took yet another refill and chugging it. Steve glanced over at Olivia, who was looking between him and his girlfriend.

With that, Nancy walked away after giving Steve a cold glare, wiping the fruit punch off of her cheek. Olivia sighed, hopping off of the counter and walking in front of the fruit punch. "Hey, don't make me warn you, too." Steve said with raised brows.

The girl chuckled, taking a small sip. "Don't worry, Steve. I'm not gonna down spiral." She smiled up at him.

"So, what are you supposed to be?" Steve questioned, pointing to her leather jacket, white tank top and jeans.

"Um, I've decided someone who doesn't give a shit about this." She shrugged, him smiling down at her. He nodded, humming quietly.

"Yeah, okay. Okay, then I guess you do give a shit or you wouldn't be here." He said.

"I'm only here because I made Jonathan a promise to go if he did. But, he kind of just, like, bailed on me and I can't find him." She shrugged. "So, feel free to have this." She said, holding the drink out which was originally for the Byers brother.

He shrugged before taking the drink from her, both of them looking at each other with the side of their eye while chugging their drinks. Olivia exhaled when she was finished, the two smiling at one another.

_______________________________________

As the night began dying down, Olivia had began looking for Jonathan again when she saw Steve storming out of the house. She drew her brows together in confusion before reluctantly following after him, worried that Jonathan would leave without her.

She walked outside, watching as Steve got in his car, leaning his head on the steering wheel. Her heart immediately started aching as she sighed, walking torwards his car. When she had gotten there, she went around to the passenger seat, closing the door behind her.

She watched as he turned his head in confusion, his brows slowly resting when he saw her.

"Hey." She muttered, turning to face him. "You okay?" She questioned.

When he looked away without a response, she put her hand on his back, waiting for him to look up at her. When he did, her expression softened as she noticed his red eyes.

"Steve. Are you okay? What happened?" She questioned with a gentle tone. He sniffled before turning to face his best friend, running his hand through his hair.

"Uh..." He muttered groggily. "Nancy, she just, like, told me that we killed Barb, that our relationship is bullshit, that- that everything is bullshit. That I'm bullshit." Olivia's eyebrows turned upside down in sadness as she watched how much this hand upset him. "And that she doesn't... She doesn't love me."

"Steve, I'm sorry." She muttered, running her hand on his back. He nodded slightly before be began crying again, this time leaning over the console of the car and laying his head on her stomach, Olivia putting her hand on his hair as she listened to him quietly cry. She hated to see her best friend so broken down over someone who she knew couldn't give him what she could've. She hated to think about being with him at the moment of him upset, but it only made her think of how she could treat him.

After sitting with him for almost half an hour, Olivia switched spots with him so she was in the driver's seat and he was in the passenger, knowing he was probably too upset to drive.

She drove to her house where he said he would stay the night at, the two silently walking upstairs to her room without her mom hearing them.

Olivia gave him a pair of more comfortable clothes from his drawer she had at her house, letting him shower in her bathroom while she found the two a movie.

Once he was done, she smiled at him before taking a shower and getting changed into sweat pants and a blue tank top.

The two got under the covers before she laid her head on his shoulder, the two watching the movie only for ten minutes before they had fallen asleep, neither of them knowing that his arm was over her waist while they slept facing each other.
