Johnny swallows thickly, looking at her step-father and feeling her hands shake against her sides. Her step-father was at it again with all of the hateful and rude comments towards her. She hated every last bit of it.
"Johnny! Do you really think you can go around all of your life acting like some cissy girl?" He yells. "You're a man and I know that you are because I raised you that way!"
A whimper was lodged in the back of her throat, threatening to spill past her lips like water. It was so hard not to burst out into tears and scream the truth. She wanted so bad to be left alone so she could be who she always wanted to be.
She wasn't a he.
She was a she.
Another wave of dysphoria runs her over, remembering how boyish her body really did seem. Broad shoulders, short hair, a chiseled face, and well... The obvious lack of the correct privates.
All of this screaming was over her wearing a necklace that she bought.
"Johnny! Are you listening to me?!" Her step-father yells. "You need to act like a man and talk to me, okay! You can't act like a cissy forever! No girl will ever want to date you if you were like this!"
She wasn't going to be able to hold this in much longer. This was really bruising her confidence and putting a number on her self-esteem. The teen was used to this by now but it really did hurt her knowing that she wouldn't be accepted by the only father figure she had around.
"I ain't a cissy," Johnny murmurs softly, her voice going a little high, it being the only thing she could do to calm her dysphoria down. "You don't understand..."
"I don't understand what?" He yells. "I do understand! You're acting like such a little girl, walking around in jewelry! What else are you hiding from me?! Do you walk around wearing your mother's bras while we aren't home? Do you practice walking around in heels?"
Johnny's cheeks go bright red in embarrassment, knowing that she had ashamedly done those things. They made her feel... Normal. That's all she wanted was to feel normal.
Finally, she just couldn't stand it anymore.
"I am a girl! And I've known for such a long damn time!" Johnny spills out.
Sid almost immediately stops in his tracks, looking at the teen with wide eyes. He wasn't sure what to do with this new information. His step-son was now his step-daughter. Did his mother even know about this? Did she know that her son was so fucked up in the head?
"No, you aren't," Sid says, his voice slowly rising. "You weren't raised to be some freak wanting to be a girl. You were raised to be a real man and to like women... Not be one."
"Sid... I'm a girl," Johnny says softly, her voice lowering into a whisper. "Please don't say that I'm not... Because I know that I am... And I've thought for so long just to come up with the same conclusion..."
Sid swallows thickly, looking at her in the eyes. He couldn't exactly process this and quite frankly, he didn't want to. The male did the only thing he knew how to do... Push away the things he didn't understand.
"Get out of my house," Sid says, his voice low. "And don't come back here..."
Johnny's eyes water a little bit and she swallows thickly, nodding her head. She had a place to go but this really hurt her a lot. The teen bends down to carefully pick up the broken pieces of her necklace, stuffing them into her pockets.
She makes her way out of the house and down the street, pulling her phone out carefully. She shakily clicks on her boyfriend's contact, putting the phone up to her ear. After a few rings, he picks up.
"Hello?" Johnny asks softly, her voice shaky.
"Babe?" Daniel asks from the other end. "What's the matter?"
"I got kicked out... Can... Can I come over for a little while?"
"Of course you can," Daniel says. "Anytime you need me, you can just come over."
"Okay, thank you," Johnny murmurs softly. "Because we have something to talk about..."
"What do we need to talk about?"
"I'll explain when I get there."
And with that, Johnny hangs up. She continues to walk in silence, tears slowly welling up into her eyes. Tears slide down her cheeks as she makes it to Daniel's apartment. The teen walks up to the door and knocks weakly, the door almost immediately opening.
Johnny is pulled inside and quickly wrapped into a hug. She jolts a little in surprise but hugs back, resting her head on his shoulder. Daniel holds her tightly, rubbing her back.
"What's the matter?" Daniel asks. "What did you need to tell me?"
"The reason I got kicked out..." Johnny starts. "It might make you think differently of me..."
"Johnny, I could never..."
"Daniel, you will," Johnny says.
Johnny pulls the broken necklace out of his pocket to show Daniel. Her boyfriend looks at it with confused eyes before looking at Johnny. The older teen swallows thickly.
"I bought this because I wanted to look pretty," Johnny murmurs softly.
"Baby... You always look pretty..." Daniel starts.
"Not in the way that I want to," Johnny interjects. "I wanna be beautiful... I wanna be less... Manly... I wanna walk around in bracelets and necklaces and earrings because... Because Daniel, I'm not a boy... And I've known for a long time... I just... I don't feel comfortable in my body..."
Daniel looks at her, nodding his head a little. The information slowly sifts into his brain, trying to gather up things that he should say. He was surprised to say the least that his boyfriend was now his girlfriend. It was a lot to take in but it was manageable.
"Johnny, or whatever your name is now," Daniel starts. "That's okay. I can live with that. It'll take some getting used to with you know, not using he and him, but I'll get it... And I'm proud to have you as my girlfriend. And for the necklace, I'll buy you a new one even prettier than the last. I want you to be happy."
"You... You don't think that I'm a freak?"
"I could never think of you anything less than beautiful."
Johnny smiles sheepishly and hugs her boyfriend tightly, a sense of comfort bubbling up inside of her stomach. Daniel hugs her back and sways softly, leaning up and kissing her cheek. The younger teen now only wanted to make Johnny feel like a queen. It was what she deserved.
"Now, my pretty girl, let's go get you a new necklace," Daniel says with a wide grin.
Johnny couldn't help but laugh.
