----------
It was well past midnight by now on Christmas morning and Ponyboy just couldn't seem to find sleep. He was sat on the couch with his knees pulled up to his chest, the lights from their Christmas tree illuminating the room with its soft and warm glow.
Underneath the tree was a variety of presents, most on the smaller side in cheap wrapping paper and a bow slapped on the side. Some were even wrapped in newspaper and taped.
The redhead didn't mind. The three brothers did what they could around this time of year, even with their parents. But now they were gone. It was their first Christmas without them. Ponyboy was stuck on what to do.
He glances over at the stockings, seeing them sag a bit due to weight. Probably some cheap candies Darry managed to get a hold of. Chocolates, most likely. And despite what little they had this year, it felt almost normal.
The house was decorated just like their mom and dad would have it, the tree decorated with the ornaments that they kept in 5heir parents old room, now Darry's.
He sighs gently. The house was silent besides the occasional creak and the ticking of the clock in the kitchen. Their house was old and it was windy outside. It had been snowing pretty hard the past few days, meaning Darry had that time off since it was impossible to work with all of the snow and ice. And it was... comforting. Having him home a little more.
The teen shifts on the couch, eyes going back to the tree. They had ornaments that the brothers made when they were little, Soda insisting that they go on. Even the angel on top. It was something Ponyboy made when he was in elementary. Teachers always gave projects closer to holidays, saying they would make good gifts.
And they usually were.
Ponyboy glances over at the door when he heard the handle turn, staring intently as his shoulders tensed a bit. They always kept the door unlocked for the gang, just in case they needed to crash. Hell, Tim Shepard even spent the night once, leaving in the morning when they woke up.
Although his stature relaxed once he seen who had came inside. It was Johnny, shaking like a leaf and covered in snow. The redhead frowns a bit, watching the dark-haired greaser come inside and quietly close the door.
Johnny slips his shoes on, nearly jumping at the sight of Ponyboy on the couch. The ravenette stops what he was doing, simply staring back at him.
"You okay, Johnnycake?" The redhead asks gently. "You're shakin' real bad."
"Yeah, I'm alright," Johnny murmurs, slipping his jacket off and keeping it by the door. He didn't want to get the floor more wet than it needed to be. "Old man shoved me out of the house. Headfirst into a snowbank."
Ponyboy moves himself to stand up, humming gently. The redhead felt bad for Johnny, but he knew better than to voice it. Johnny just wanted to feel normal, and he'd always oblige.
"I'll get some clothes from the dryer," he says quietly. "Just finished a load but no one wanted to fold it."
Johnny didn't argue, standing at the door still as he shook. The teen was cold and wet, dripping as the snow melted from his clothes. Ponyboy was careful and quiet as he made hus way to the laundry room, getting some clothes out for Johnny. Most of the load had been his, so the clothes would fit fine.
He comes back out and hands the clothes to Johnny, watching as he went to the bathroom to change. The redhead takes his spot back on the couch, grabbing a blanket that was thrown over the back. He'd give it to Johnny to keep warm.
It wasn't only a few minutes later when he felt the couch dip beside him, Johnny sitting close. He couldn't help it. He was freezing. Ajd it wasn't like thet haven't cuddled before.
Ponyboy hums gently, pulling Johnny close with one arm and wrapping them both up in the blanket. It was a heavy quilt that Two-Bit's mom had made them one year as a thanks for helping fix her sink (Darry fixed it).
The ravenette rests his head against Ponyboy's shoulder, relaxing as he started to warm up. Ponyboy tips his head to rest on Johnny's, humming still. He was comfortable.
"What're you doing up so late?" Johnny asks gently after a few minutes of silence. His eyes were stuck on the tree. He'd only ever see trees like this here. It ain't like his folks would get one at home. And they were nice nice look at. "Can't sleep?"
"Yeah," Ponyboy murmurs. "Just can't seem to get to sleep. My tossin' and turnin' would have woken Soda. Came out here."
Johnny nods his head slightly before tipping his head to look at Ponyboy. His face was lit up with the lights, making him look even more angelic than he usually did. It made his heart flutter. And catching the lights in his eyes made him feel warm all over.
Ponyboy was beautiful.
"You know, you're awfully handsome," Johnny admits gently. "Its a wonder you ain't got girls flocking you like Soda.
Ponyboy's cheeks get hot, looking at Johnny sheepishly. He hadn't been expecting something like that. The redhead almost wasn't sure of what to say.
"Girls ain't really my thing," the redhead says gently. "Can't seem to like them at all."
"Well that's alright, you might some day," Johnny reassures. Although he himself never really liked girls either. "But if you don't, it's okay. Whoever you like will be special."
Ponyboy nods his head slightly, looking at Johnny still. The redhead didn't really care for girls. He just didn't like them. But he did admire boys. He liked how handsome and brave they were, how smart thet were, or how kind they were.
"I like boys."
Johnny's eyes widen a bit at the sudden confession, but he couldn't help the smile that slowly creeped up on him. The ravenette didn't mind though. He'd always be there for Ponyboy.
"Me too," the ravenette responds simply, as if it were the most normal thing on the whole planet. It should be. "Its okay."
Ponyboy sighs gently, his stature relaxing even more. He felt safe here with Johnny, snuggled up and under a blanket as they stared at the Christmas tree in all of its glory.
The redhead hums, tipping his head forward a bit, his eyes watching Johnny for any sign of uncomfortableness. And when the older greaser simply leaned upward to try and meet him halfway, he pressed their lips together.
The two kiss gently, shifting their bodies to face one another better. It was clumsy and a bit messy, but perfect for the two of them. They enjoyed this a lot.
They slowly part, pressing their foreheads together. Johnny smiles sheepishly and Ponyboy couldn't help but giggle a bit. The redhead was just so happy. And the ravenette was the same.
No words were exchanged as they looked into eachother's eyes, simply taking in everything.ย This moment felt timeless.
Ponyboy carefully pulls Johnny closer, laying on his back. The ravenette rested on his chest, head tucked comfortably underneath his chin. Their limbs tangled together as the two shared their heat.
This was nice.
The redhead yawns gently, a hand moving to run his fingers through Johnny's damp hair. He was finally starting to get tired. He shifts a little, moving the quilt to cover them better.
And that's how the two found sleep, cuddled up with one another on the couch.
