"EVERYONE IN POSITION. FOUETTE."
Ballet used to make Victoria calm, as she repeated the words in her head. Elbow forward, shoulders down. She spun repeating the movements over and over, she pulled in for a double and posed. Her partner's hands held her waist as they moved on to the next part of the routine.
Here's the thing about Victoria's partner, ballet was considered too feminine in a town so conservative. There were no boys in Madame Fleur's School of Dance. So instead of just cutting all male roles from certain routines, Madame Fleur replaced the boys with girls.
Victoria's partner used to be her friend from childhood, Chloe Campbell, but she had moved to Florida last year. Victoria was left partnerless for months instead helping others with balance and position.
Until Luna Moore had moved to town. Luna was tall, taller than Vickie at least which wasn't saying anything really considering Victoria had yet to have her growth spurt. She had cascading black hair that framed her oval face perfectly. Her eyes were crescent shaped and the corners of crinkled when she smiled.
Victoria was scared of Luna. On her first day when Luna and Victoria were first introduced, Luna had asked if her family was from South Korea. They were. When Victoria confirmed Luna smiled saying her mother was from Japan but her father was American so she had a white last name. She was apparently very happy because her ballet school did not have one Asian person and it was nice to see someone who looked at least a little like her.
Victoria liked this interaction.
Victoria didn't like however when every time they practiced their routine, when Luna put her hands on Victoria's waist, she felt butterflies.
Victoria didn't like how when she first came to class with her newly red hair, Luna placed a hand on her shoulder reassuring her she looked extremely pretty. She didn't like the way her heart beat too fast near her. She didn't like the way her cheeks flushed whenever she smiled at her.
This is the way Victoria should be feeling about boys. Mike maybe? Lucas? Maybe even Connor from her math class. Not Luna Moore. She was convinced Luna was a witch, putting a spell on Victoria that she couldn't stop. Girls don't like girls.
But for some reason, Victoria Lee liked Luna more than she should.
Girls don't like girls
Girls don't like girls
Girls don't like girls
The words echoed through Victoria's head as Luna picked her up for the next part of the routine before letting her down, spinning her around until she faced her. Luna's forest green eyes seemed to see into Vickie's soul as she smiled at her. Madame Fleur stopped them with her applause, telling them to class was over for the day.
Victoria wanted to grab her bag and walk out the school before Luna had a chance to talk to her, but her mother didn't like it when she wore her ballet shoes even for a second after she had finished. So reluctantly, she sat on the bench, untying her ballet shoes.
Which gave Luna enough time to continue bewitching her. "Hi Vickie!" She greeted her usual smile on her face, Victoria gave her a smile of her own attempting to hurry up the process. "You did so well today, you really are one of the best dancers in our class." This caused Victoria to blush, her cheeks stained pink at the compliment.
"Thank you," she muttered, shoving her shoes in her bag and pulling out her flats quickly slipping them on. "Well I'll see you on Friday." She said attempting to get out of there before Luna's voice stopped her again.
"Wait! I was wondering if, maybe, you wanted to go watch a movie with me? On Sunday?" Luna asked sheepishly. Victoria's breath hitched. She took a deep breath attempting to calm the flush in her cheeks. "I'm inviting some other friends from school as well." Luna continued. Victoria couldn't tell if she was upset or relieved by this discovery.
"I'll ask my parents and get back to you on Friday okay?" She didn't even bother waiting for Luna's answer as she rushed out the dance studio, cheeks red and heart heavy.
"THE CASE OF PHINEAS GAGE IS ONE OF THE-"
Victoria didn't listen any longer. She never really listened in this class, she got her notes from other places. Her pencil drifted mindlessly across her paper, sketching the crinkles in her eyes. Her eyes? Victoria dropped her pencil looking at the paper. Goddamn it. She crumpled up the picture of Luna, shoving it in her backpack before finding a fresh piece of paper.
"I am so sorry Mr.Clarke, so sorry, please continue." Dustin rushed in, falling into the seat in front of Vickie.
Victoria ignored them, turning back to her page. She needed someone else to draw, she always drew Will and Lucas, and she wasn't a fan of drawing Mike or Dustin. She looked around the classroom before her eyes landed on Max, who was already staring back at her. A little weirded out, she turned around.
Well if the universe seems to want her to draw Max Mayfield then that's what'd she do. Will threw her a note. Av Club, lunch.
She rolled her eyes shoving it in her pocket and turning it back to her sketch.
"Wow you actually came." Dustin snarked as Victoria strolled into the classroom five minutes late, she smoothed out her jean skirt before standing next to Mike. Dustin opened the box revealing a slimy lizard looking creature. "I mean it's kinda cute if you squint." Victoria shrugged backing away from the box.
"His name is D'artagnan." Dustin smiled proudly. "Like the musketeer?" Victoria asked curiously as Dustin nodded. "Dart for short."
"And he was in your trash?" Max asked causing Vickie to jump. She hadn't even noticed her there. She thought they were supposed to decided as a group but it seemed Dustin and Lucas had forgotten the rules.
Or Will had betrayed her again after she already spent a whole day complaining about how Max was rude to her despite not really knowing her.
Either way she was a little pissed.
"Goring for food, you wanna hold him?" "No." "What about you Vickie?" "No." "He doesn't bite." "Is that supposed to make me want to hold the lizard you found in your trash more?" "Just a little." "No Dustin."
Dustin placed the creature into Vickie's hand anyways and she dropped it on the ground shrieking. "I said no, ever heard about consent." She spat wiping her hands on her black tights.
"Well don't just drop him." Dustin spat back picking Dart off the ground and handing him to Lucas. "He's like a living booger." He cringed passing him to Will.
"Ugh, ew." The boy said passing it to Mike. Mike gave Vickie a look before handing him to her. "What even is he?" She groaned, as Mike pressed up against her back his hands wrapping in front of her cupped under her own cupped hands in case she felt like dropping him again.
"My question exactly." Dustin grinned, slamming books on the table. "At first I thought he was some type of pollywog-" "Pollywog?" "Another word for tadpole, like a-" "I know what a tadpole is."
"Alright then you know most tadpoles are aquatic right? Well Dart isn't, he doesn't need water." Dustin said looking over at the creature Vickie was still holding, the disgusted look on your face had faded as she stared at it in curiosity, Mike placing his chin on her shoulder and doing the same.
"You know, he's growing on me." She muttered, "Aren't there non aquatic pollywogs?" Lucas asked. "Yeah from India and South America. So how did one end up in my trash?" Dustin asked looking at all of them.
"Maybe some scientists brought it here and it's escaped?" Max suggested. "Do you guys see that," Mike asked squishing his cheek against Vickie's, Max rolled her eyes at this. "looks like something is moving inside him." He shined a light on it causing it to squeal and jump out of Vickie's hands.
"It's okay, it's okay. I know you don't like that little guy." Dustin cooed comforting the lizard warning odd looks from his friends.
"And there's another thing, reptiles are cold-blooded .... they love the heat, the sun. Dart hates it, it hurts him." Dustin explained looking up at them.
"So if he's not a pollywog or a reptile then-" Lucas started.
"Then I discovered a new species." Dustin smirked wildly.
Victoria grinned before hearing the bell ring. The group rushed out of the closet.
