Darkness Will Prevail - Part Eleven
A sudden knock against his body in the other world lets Cynar loose his grip on the girls around him. He curses in himself when the Asgardian gasps for air. He had been so close!
Another throw knocks him off of his feet and he glares at Diamond. She had used her power to fling a trash can at him.
"You're going to pay for that," she spits at him and Cynar jumps back on his feet.
Looks like you have underestimated them, brother, he hears inside his head and he frowns.
"Cluinn mo ghuth. Reothadh," he growls and the three girls around him freeze in their movement. He could hear his brother's laughter inside his head.
You need to call upon the Ancient Language? You've grown weaker.
Cynar casts a glance upon Iris who's still struggling to recover from a cardiac arrest, but he would deal with her later. First he needs to get rid off of his brother. He shifts his presence towards the dream world and must fight the urge not to flinch; Phoenix is right in front of him with only a few inches of distance. So that's what that feels like.
"Phoenix." He shifts his eyes towards the persons standing behind him on the balcony of his castle. They must've freed him from his prison. "Have you come to kill me?"
"This has to stop, Cynar."
He straightens his back and looks down upon his younger brother who has an angry look in his green eyes. "Have it your way then." And he transforms in the grey dragon, creating a strong gust of wind with his huge wings.
Phoenix holds his arm in front of his face and figths against the wind.
Katherine, Skyler and Elizabeth don't manage to keep standing and fall upon the ground.
Cynar raises up in the air with a deep rumble of laughter.
"Stop, I've got this," Phoenix commands the others who are trying to get to him as fast as they can. "Keep your distance," he warns them and when he's sure they have taken a few steps back, he follows Cynar by jumping in the air and transforming in a enormous red phoenix.
He makes big wing beats to rise as fast as possible. Without a warning the dragon lets himself fall down and speeds in the direction of the phoenix. He points his sharp front claws at his chest and with some great effort Phoenix manages to make a vertical air role to dodge the attack. But still one of the claws hits his chest passingly and Phoenix screams in pain, which sounded as the scream of an eagle but then louder.
Cynar laughs and unfolds his wings before he could hit the ground, he shears over the ground and due to his speed he's high in the air back again in no time.
Elizabeth, Skyler and Katherine had to dive out of the way when Cynar had almost hit the ground. Luckily his attention is no longer focussed upon them.
"Do you think he can win?" Katherine asks whilst following the fight between the two creatures with her eyes. But they couldn't tell, they had never seen such fight before so it was impossible to judge who was winning.
The dragon and the phoenix are clawing, biting and growling at each other. Both sometimes screaming in pain which could result into a roar or into an eagle scream.
Give up, brother, Cynar tells him when one of his claws burries itself inside the back of the phoenix. You cannot win this.
You don't know what I can, Phoenix warns him and frees himself out of Cynar's grip. I have grown stronger, while you have weakened.
Cynar snorts whereby some flames dart his way, but fire doesn't hurt a phoenix. Grown weaker? Don't you know how many civilisations I have destroyed? I am NOT weak!
Phoenix grins for as far that's possible with his beak but then picks a hole in the dragon's wing when he comes to close. Cynar has to make stronger wing beats to stay in the air.
But it has been centuries since you have encountered your own specie. Your arrogance has weakened you.
Cynar roars and wants to rip his brother's birdy head off of his shoulders. Phoenix dodges his furious attack and closes his eyes, gathering all of his power and knowledge he has.
I'm sorry, he says and he means it. He doesn't want to end his brother's life but he can't let the human race die. He opens his eyes again and meets Cynar's fearful gaze.
You can't.
I can, and I will. And with that last saying he creates a strong and fierce silver light by sending all his power to his wings. He flings them together and sends the light in the dragon's direction. With a loud blast it hits his scaled chest and the dragon roars in frustration. This couldn't be happening! The light penetrates his chest and is destroying him from inside out.
Phoenix had banished Cynar out of this world, back to reality. But that did had come with a price. Phoenix' power leaves him for a moment and he transforms back to his human form, falling towards to the ground with great speed.
The furious scream of Cynar fills his ears when he realizes he can't shift back to his dreamworld.
I hope you'll crash upon the earth and die.
Phoenix laughs shortly but that quickly fades away when he realizes that's probably what's going to happen. He's falling downwards very fast and he's too weak to do anything about it.
He closes his eyes and waits for the impact to happen but then a loud hum vibrates through the air. Some kind of strange wind slows him down. Waving past below him, sometimes stopping and being back again. Phoenix opens his eyes while he's slowly falling, he notices Skyler is standing a few meters ahead. She has her hands pointed at him and now he sees the loud hum and the wave belonging with it, is coming out of her gloves.
With a gentle thud Phoenix lands on the stone floor of the balcony. He places his head between his hands and fights the weakness inside him.
"Is he dead?" Elizabeth asks him but Phoenix shakes his head.
"No, he's trapped inside reality. He can't move. One final blow there, will kill him."
Skyler looks at her watch. "Couldn't have been a better timing. Our time here's up."
But Phoenix doesn't respond, a cold shiver runs down his spine and Cynar laughs inside his head. He knew he had felt it too.
You have failed. They're starting to die.
Without knowing what's happening, Katherine, Skyler and Elizabeth disappear out of the dreamworld. Traveling back to their bodies.
Phoenix grits his teeth together and determination fills his mind. It's not too late yet, and he jumps through the void, following Cynar's track and appearing right in front of him.
Cynar's laughter stops immediately and Phoenix places his fingertips against the sides of his brother's head.
"They will live. Goodbye, brother."
"No!" Cynar wants to scream in agony when a horrible pain shoots through his body, starting inside his head and leaving a burning trail all the way to his toes. But even though he wants to scream, no sound is escaping his mouth. Phoenix stares him in his eyes, not breaking eye-contact for one moment. The skin under his fingers starts to crumble away and slowly his brother perishes away to dust. The fog disappears and Phoenix drops his arms against his side, feeling empty and hollow inside.
He's truly the last of his kind, and now without a goal. What did he had to do now?
