Darkness Has Fallen - Part Twelve

"What did you do? Is he... dead?" Phoenix hears a voice asking behind him, and he pulls himself together and slowly turns around. He hadn't realized there had been others but he supposed they were the ones who were going to attack Cynar in reality.

He nods. "He's dead."

Phoenix is suprised he could say it so easily. He would have thought it would have been more difficult to admit his brother is dead. But then, Cynar hadn't been his brother in a long, long time. Perhaps that's why.

"H-how did you manage... to do that?" a blonde woman asks him, she's clutching her chest and seems to have trouble breathing.

Phoenix shrugs. "Call it my superpower." He isn't really in the mood for a whole explanation and what kind of consequences it could have for him. It hadn't happened often that a Dreamwalker killed the same specie by burning the life force out of the other. When he had been younger, he had only heard stories about it. Not ever did he had thought, he'll be doing it himself.

Rumour and talking starts spreading across the air and Phoenix grants himself a smile. The humans are waking up again, the fog is gone, Cynar is dead. All is well.

The two other women support the woman who's having trouble breathing. The youngest one looks at Phoenix.

"You're Phoenix, right?"

Phoenix nods and she stretches her hand towards him. After a small hesitation Phoenix takes it and before he knows it, they're jumping across places. He feels as his stomach is still in the park. With a soft noise they have apparently arrived where she wanted to go to, and Phoenix crosses eyes with Katherine, Skyler and Elizabeth.

"A little warning would have been nice," he points out and lets go of her hand. She chuckles but then turns her attention towards the men who are waking up and staring around with some misty glances.

"Bruce? Iris needs some medical attention, I think."

"I'll be fine. How's Loki?"

"I'm fine, darling. What happened? All I can remember is some strange dream?"

Phoenix looks between all of their faces, feeling a bit uneasy and uncomfortable. He doesn't belong with them, he's different. But little did he know, they're all different.

They notice him standing there, and quickly they introduce themselves.

"Now... What happened?" Tony asks and the women start explaining. Sometimes helped by Phoenix who adds some more information, but other than that, he's silent and observes the Avengers. They seem nice. Maybe he could stay with them? Or would that be weird to ask? After all, they don't know him. They know he's Cynar's brother and killed him but other than that, nothing. He's quite sure they wouldn't trust him yet. He wouldn't either.

He suddenly notices they're all silent again and staring at him. O, had they asked a question?

"Earth to Phoenix," Katherine jokes and Phoenix smirks.

"I'm sorry, I was lost in thought."

"We noticed," Skyler comments.

Phoenix spins around his axis, realizing he's in a very high building. Probably the highest in the neighbourhood. The wind is swirling through the room because of the huge gap in one of the windows.

"What are you doing?" Kathy asks him curiously.

"Just looking around," he answers. "Where are we?"

"Avengers Tower."

"Avengers Tower?" Phoenix repeats her answer with a chuckle. He wouldn't be suprised if it also had their logo on the building. Somehow that seemed very fitting.

"What's so funny?" Tony asks him offended.

"First rule of the universe: good attracks bad. And this building is just a huge beacon of 'Hey, we're right here. Come and challenge us'," he pauses for a moment. "And that is exactly what have happened."

Tony doesn't get it. "Huh?"

"Maybe you guys should consider a more secret hideout. Because this one is kind of in plain sight."

"Maybe the kid is right," Steve agrees with Phoenix. "No offense, Tony."

Phoenix is suprised. Who is he calling 'kid'? He's older than everyone together. Probably older than anything on this planet. He wants to correct him but then decides not to, after all, he doesn't want to scare them... yet.

Tony crosses his arms. "So, what are you suggesting? We should move? Just because Dragonkiller Phoenix here says so?"

Natasha shrugs. "It's true, Tony. We're getting way too much attention because of this building. Just like Shield had, because they had their symbol on everything. Literally everything."

Tony snorts. "We'll discuss that later. We had asked Dreamboy here a question."

Phoenix quirks an eyebrow. "Dreamboy? I liked Dragonkiller better."

"We could use someone like you in our team. You could stay with us, if you wish," Steve says.

Phoenix doesn't know what to say for a moment. He had forgotten how it was to have nice people around you. For the past few centuries he had only chased his brother, but now that he was dead... The hollow feeling comes setting back up again, he had no longer a purpose. Perhaps staying here on Earth could give him a new one.

"Unless you have to go back home, or something," Diamond drags him out of his thoughts. They had interpret his silence differently.

Phoenix' heart aches. Home? He had no longer a home. But then, home is where the heart is. A smile spreads across his face, he has made his decission. "I'll stay with you guys. Protecting the Earth, I think I can handle that."
