She is often seen listening and watching, testing people to see where they stand. Vera is very opinionated and will call someone out on their bullshit. She wants to protect people who cannot protect themselves because she sees herself in them. She is often mask her own emtions or act how people expect her because its a way of protecting herself. Most people see her as a hotheaded girl, however underneath this she is an intelligent person who knows what she's wants. However, contrary to that she is very self conscious and struggles with feeling of inadequacy. She feels that she is just a toy, thus causing all of these violent emtions to build up in her.

She had plenty of freckles, especially under her eyes and shoulders. Vera has a straight nose with round lips. Vera has a very athletic, pear shaped body, she also has notable amount of muscle (she's not scary buff ). She is tall around six feet tall. She has scars mainly on her torso and arms. She also has attached ear lobes and they are pierced. During the captain America movie her hair is buzzed.
𝐒𝐓𝐘𝐋𝐄| Vera is known to wear both bright and natural colors, she enjoys statement and homemade jewelry. She is seen wearing both skirts, pants and dresses. She enjoys wearing fingerless gloves, but also having her hands exposed. She wears whatever feels right for the situation, just with a little bit of flare if she can. Its clear she takes a lot of pride in her appearance and that she takes a lot of effort in taking care of herself. During the Captain America movie she is constantly wearing men's clothing and uniforns. She keeps her dog tags and a locket with the pictures of her family.

𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘|Vera was born to Celina and Filip Zelazny, a recently married couple. Her older brother was born before her parents were married. Celina was a teacher while Filip worked in the kitchen of a restaurant. Life was pretty good until the great depression when the family was almost out of money. Her parents worked hard, somehow keeping the family afloat. In the middle and near the end of the depression the Zelazny family had gotten a few new members. Vera was know an older sister and she was working her ass off at the family restaurant while her brother began to work as a store clerk.
During this time Vera gained a need to protect people from those who wronged them, she would sneak out to catch bigger kids picking on smaller ones and beat the shit out of the bigger ones secretly. She didn't get caught because no one was willing to say they got beat up by a girl.
When she was around thirteen tragedy struck when her father passed away during an armed robbery. It was also around this time she found out she was into both girls and boys when she formed a crush on Patty Kelly. About two years after this they dated, however broke it off rather shortly (only three months).
A few years later when she was seventeen she met Lewis Baker, she caught him being beat up a bunch of adults because "he was on the wrong side of town". She saved him, scaring off the boys with a butterfly knife that she hid in her clutch. Vera got to know Lewis as she walked him back to his house, she decided he was good company. After a while they became good friends and then later on boyfriend and girlfriend, however they had to hide their relationship because of segregation.
A few years later the US joins WWII, and her boyfriend was drafted, so was her brother. Her brother was sick during this time, however they needed the money so Vera offered to take his place. She cut her hair to a boyish length for the time, faked going missing, bribed someone, and then had her brother show up and then swap with her. Her brother stayed home helping their sisters and mother while Vera went off to war.
She joined the 107th regiment, where she met Bucky Barnes. Life wasn't great for her, but somehow deep in her bones she knew she was close to finding her beloved. She was right, however it would break her heart. As it turns out, Lewis had died the week she joined the 107th. Determined to both avenge her boyfriend and save those who could not save themselves she trained and worked even harder, while still maintaining the lie that she was a man.
When the 107th was captured she was imprisoned. They experimented on Vera, thinking that she wasn't important and if anything messed up it wouldn't be too bad. However, after being repeatedly beaten and experimented on, Steve came the the rescue.
When the doctors treated her they found out she was a women, but instead of discharging her the government used her as a spy. She could easily overhear and retrieve information. However, shortly after Captain America went under, the government decided that she wasn't needed anymore because Hydra had already been defeated. She came home to complete destruction, her home life in ruins, her boyfriend dead, and family "dishonored " by her lies. Hydra was slowly growing again and when they found out she too was a super soldier because of Zola's experiments. Looking to gain her as an asset, they did so by kidnapping her. During this time she was mainly used for experimentation, and gathering intelligence against her will.
Around 2011 shortly before Hydra fell she managed to escape from her imprisonment, hiding out in abandon buildings. When Hydra did fall the government —secretly—decided that she needed to detained for her works in gathering information. However, somehow Steve after reading some of the files managed to get Vera out. During this time she became an avenger.
