IT WAS HARRY AND MAGNOLIA'S FOURTH YEAR. The year he had asked her out on a date...
He didn't have the guts to ask her until almost the end of the year - due to him, always backing out and then, being trapped in the Triwizard Tournament.
That was something Harry always regretted in the future. He had wished he had the guts back then to ask the female Lupin out sooner. He liked her so much - she'd be the only thing he'd think about and it infuriated him. It didn't infuriate him in a way that made him hate her... It infuriated him because it made him into a lovesick fool.
Every time he was around her, he was mostly stuttering, rambling, blushing, or sometimes even freezing up. He wished the side where he felt confident and 'egotistical' - which only came out after he won a game of quidditch or an argument with someone - more often because he could talk to her and see blush appear on her cheeks. Thanks to Sirius, of course - who gave him 'guaranteed tricks for a girl to like you back'...
Tip #1: compliment their eyes
[ Sirius - "It's something people don't generally expect you to compliment first" ]
Tip #2: always look into their eyes, it makes them nervous
[ Sirius - "HARRY, IT'S ALWAYS THE EYES!" ]
Tip #3: if they have long hair, tuck it behind their ear when they're talking to you
[ Sirius - "Or just touch it up subtly if they have short hair and continue listening to what they're saying and watch them blush nervously" ]
Tip #4: gifts! gifts! gifts!
[ Sirius - "Chocolate was always a go-to for me" ]
A dozen more tips explained by the dogfather and godson when in conversation...
One important thing was that each tip surprisingly worked for Harry Potter on Magnolia Lupin. But right when her charming self flirts back with him - that confident and egotistical self immediately melted away. He couldn't help it, practically for her, just saying his name made him kick his legs and blush uncontrollably.
Remus at the time - when neither Sirius nor Remus knew that it was Remus's daughter, Magnolia - thought it was hilarious. Because after Harry would try a tip, he'd send a letter about how it went. He obviously didn't tell them the times he'd flunk or back out, since he already felt the embarrassment for himself.
But let me tell you... The look of realization on Remus's face when he and Sirius looked back at Harry's letters to them before the summer they found out it was Maggie who was Harry's crush... He wanted to kill Sirius Black, his best friend, his best mate - for telling Harry a kissing tip who was unknowingly gonna be used on Magnolia.
Which also worked on her too -
Harry used that kissing tip on the night after the Yule Ball.
But during the dance - Maggie was having a good time there, her date being, Fred Weasley. They only went as friends though. Fred was trying to hint to Harry for a while to ask her, but he never got the hint. And she was asked by several guys but she didn't want to go with any of them and rejected them all.
Harry couldn't take his eyes off her the whole night, regretting dearly that he didn't ask her to go with him. So all night, he looked at her adoringly while Ron was a grump the whole time about Hermione going with Viktor Krum to the ball. After the dance, Maggie was sitting at a table - waiting for her two best friends, Neville Longbottom and Ginny Weasley to finish their one last dance. Angelina, Lee, George, and Fred left to go to bed but we all know they were planning a prank or a secret party of some kind. But Maggie was helping out on the cleanup and just decided to wait for Neville and Ginny, so she wouldn't have to walk back to her dorm alone.
She was waiting on the steps of the stairs of the entrance to the ballroom. Her elbows propped on her knees, her palm to her cheek, a small adoring smile towards her best friends that danced together. She was exhausted and socially drained from the night. Her heels sitting beside her neatly on the steps, her bare feet touching the cold steps, cooling her heated skin.
"Magnolia?" She heard her name and looked up behind her.
"Oh hi Harry," She said softly, greeting him with a small smile that made his heart flutter. He quickly looked down to hide his flustered face and slowly walked down the steps to where she sat.
"W-What are you still doing here?" He asks, scratching the back of his neck.
"I was gonna wait for Neville and Ginny to finish, but I think I was just gonna go up to my dorm"
"Oh okay then, I'll just go too then-"
"No wait, we can talk for a little while" Her remark made him bite down on his bottom lip to hide a growing grin. He nodded before turning around and sitting on the step above the step she sat on, making sure to be close to her.
"I don't want to go to bed yet" She mutters, playing with her acrylic painted dark red nails.
"Why?" He whispers as she shrugs, then looks up at the dance floor that still looks beautiful. With a few couples still softly dancing, alongside Neville and Ginny.
"I kind of just... Don't want the night to end..." He doesn't know why but that kind of hit him hard as he looked down at her.
Magnolia wasn't much of a people person when she first attended Hogwarts. She was close to Harry, Hermione, and Ron but she wasn't close enough to be a part of the trio - not that she minded. She was close to the Weasley twins, Dean Thomas, Seamus Finnegan, and Neville Longbottom. But she never really hung out with people.
You always would find her alone. Either at the library, common room, or simply minding her own business during meals and classes.
She just wasn't a people person and mostly preferred her alone time, but people still adored her and tried getting close to her. She was just very mysterious and closed off, which made people drawn to her - not even just because of her Veela abilities.
And tonight was the most fun she's had with other people. She genuinely enjoyed herself, even though she wished it was Harry who danced with her most of the night.
"I get it..." He didn't. This wasn't his favorite night at all - He wished he danced and hung out with Maggie instead of moping in the back with Ron. And not hear his two best friends argue and bicker the whole dance when around one another.
But his favorite thing tonight was seeing Magnolia have fun and be her beautiful self.
"You look beautiful tonight, by the way," He says nervously, forcing himself to pick up his head and look her directly into her blue eyes. She was already staring back and it immediately made his face visibly turn red.
And she noticed.
She looked down and chuckled, playing with her dress. She wore a long black tulle dress, with a visible shorter cut under the see-through polka-dotted fabric. It was like a dress over a dress, with ruffled layered off-the-shoulder sleeves. Her hair was short, down, and in small waves.
"Thank you, Sirius bought me the dress"
"Of course he did," Harry said with a laugh. She faked a cough, looking around before asking him a question.
"Did you have fun with Parvati?" Harry laughed and shook his head.
"Not quite frankly - I felt awful, I asked her to the ball and I didn't even dance with her," He says with a laugh, finding himself to grow comfortable in the presence of Magnolia and not as nervous. She furrowed her eyebrows but looked down to hide her smile.
"Then... Why'd you ask her?"
"Everyone needs a date to the Yule Ball - especially when you're one of the contestants in the tournament"
"Yeah, I guess" She whispers, masking the disappointment that he never asked her to the ball.
"How was it with Fred?"
"It was fun - but we only attended as friends." She said, making him nod quickly in relief as a soft sigh had left his lips.
"You weren't asked?" He asked with clear shock, making her chuckle.
"No, I was... But none of them were you - the-the guy I liked! I didn't want to go with any of them" She quickly says, stuttering slightly as he almost catches what her stutter was. She looked up at him as he stared down at her with a knowing look and she suddenly grew nervous.
"And you? Did you just ask Parvati because you needed someone quick last minute?" She couldn't help but ask as he nodded, finding himself leaning in closer to her.
"It was more like the person I was too scared to ask was the person I wanted to go with because... She was already being asked by a million guys and I thought I had no chance..."
"And you? You weren't asked by the guy you fancy, so you decided to go with your best friend last minute?" He asks, making her nod and resting her palm on her cheek, with her elbow propped on her knees as she stares up at Harry.
"Practically" She whispered, finding herself leaning closer to Harry, not so chalantly looking at his lips.
That was Harry's cue. Sirius says, that when the girl starts leaning in - she's already wondering what your lips feel like and wants to kiss you. So Harry now has to keep staring at her eyes and only glancing down at her lips once before smirking. And he did that before softly whispering her name. Like he was asking for permission.
"Magnolia." He whispered, suddenly making the girl weak to the knees as her eyes were beginning to close.
"Harry?" She whispers back - and Sirius's tips say, slowly place your right hand on her cheek, holding her cheek as she slowly smiles.
Magnolia smiles, leaning into his touch, and they're inches away from one another. Harry's heart was thumping, he was afraid she might hear it. It was accelerating and nerve-wracking - This would be his first kiss.
"Can I kiss you?" Sirius made it clear to ask for consent. It will not only make the person feel warm and a bit excited, but it shows your respect and caringness for them.
"Yeah," She whispered, her heart surprisingly as calm as ever with him. Her eyes flutter shut and he's cupping her face to bring her lips to his.
But Harry finds himself forgetting every single tip and every rule from Sirius and lets his body start taking over. His other hand that wasn't cupping her cheek went around her waist and pulled her closer. He slowly slid down to the stair step she was sitting on without breaking the kiss, pulling her even closer. She kissed back with just as much passion, subtly laying her legs over his knees and pulling them in, to be so much closer than they already were.
As her hands dragged down to tug his shirt closer to her, that caused it to grow hard for him to kiss back. She chuckled, sensing his nervousness, and pulled away with a wide smile and pink cheeks.
And silently, before they parted after they walked to the Gryffindor common room, to their dorms - their night after the Yule Ball was silently agreed to be just between them. And still, to the day of their wedding, no one knows, except them... that night of the Yule Ball when they kissed on the steps.
~ BACK IN THE ' PRESENT ' ~
"Do you remember your guy's first kiss?" Harry thought for a second and chuckled sheepishly, looking down to hide his crimson cheeks. He sat in front of James and Sirius at a small restaurant, ordering Butter beers and waiting for Remus, Peter, and Magnolia to join them soon.
"Um..." Just as his mouth opens to tell them the time in his and Maggie's fourth year... His mind blanked.
He couldn't remember.
When he tried thinking about it - there was no memory popping up in his mind. He remembers the feeling and the way her lips felt on his for the first time but...
He couldn't remember.
"I - um..." Sirius and James looked at Harry, who was furrowing his eyebrows in confusion and frustration. They looked at one another in concern and back at him.
"You good?"
"No, I'm not... I-I can't remember" Harry mutters, finally hearing the laughter of his Maggie entering the place beside Peter and Remus.
"Peter, you're brilliant!" Maggie said, barking out a laugh beside an amused Remus who was laughing alongside her.
"You should have been there!" James waved the three over and they came over. Remus sat at the end, with Maggie sliding in the seat beside Harry and Peter sitting at the other end. Immediately sensing something was wrong, Maggie looks at Harry worriedly.
"Hey, what's wrong, love?"
"I can't remember" He mutters, making her furrow her eyebrows.
"Can't remember what?"
"Our first kiss" She furrowed her eyebrows and looked at him, placing her hand on his shoulder.
"Our first kiss was on our first date out in Hogsmeade, in our fourth year-"
"No, no, no! You don't remember either - it was the night of the Yule Ball before you were in the lake for the second challenge in the tournament"
"Wait, are you talking about the Triwizard Tournament? You were in that?" Remus asks urgently as Sirius and James look back and forth between the couple.
"Dark Lord rigged it so yeah-"
"What a childhood you had" Peter mutters, letting out a shudder at the thought of himself being in the life-threatening tournament.
"Harry, I don't-" Her eyes grew huge in realization.
"Oh, Merlin..." She whispered, running her hand through her hair nervously.
"No, this can't be what I'm thinking, right?" James asks, the table growing a second silent as the waiter sets their butter beer on the table.
"Thank you," Maggie and Remus say politely but nobody leans over to grab their drink.
"We're forgetting our memories" Harry whispers, leaning back in his chair with a sense of panic coursing through him suddenly.
"No - everything is going to be fine, we'll talk to McGonagall after Hogsmeade and see if Albus has found a way back home."
"Magnolia, don't you get it? Our future has officially been completely changed. That's why our old memories are disappearing..." Harry snaps, lowering his tone as he rubs his face furiously.
"Harry, stop-" Harry stood up quickly in his seat, his heart practically beating out of his chest.
"Do you not see it, Mags? The memories of each other are disappearing... Which could only mean one thing..." She shook her head violently, trying to fight that urge of realization and tears.
"No-"
"I have to get some air," He said before leaving them with her quickly following him behind.
"Maggie!"
"Harry!" The marauders quickly stood up after a few seconds, bolting out the door to find Maggie and Harry.
"Harry, you don't know that, you're being dramatic-" Magnolia says, coming behind him and grabbing his wrist, which makes him quickly shove it back. He stops, his back facing her as both their chests are heaved with heavy breaths.
"I don't remember meeting you Maggie" He whispered, hearing her clear her throat to possibly stop tears.
"Tell me, did you come to Hogwarts in your first year?" She opens her mouth to speak, but nothing comes out.
"I-I think so-"
"You're worse than me... You came in your third when your dad also became a professor. But other than that, I can't remember anything - and it's killing me." Harry choked out, running his hand through his hair as his anxiety started to spike.
This wasn't supposed to happen. None of it.
Time traveling back twenty-four years wasn't supposed to happen - they were supposed to get married!
Seeing their dead family wasn't supposed to happen - they're dead and that's final! Life can't just repeat itself, and everything will be the same.
"Magnolia, you don't understand - it's too late! We've been gone too long and everything for us has changed! We're not having a wedding! Teddy probably isn't alive - and my parents are still probably dead!" His words took her back, and she placed her hand on her mouth as it felt like her heart stopped.
She couldn't breathe.
"Fred is dead! Remus and Tonks are dead!"
"H-Harry, please stop-"
"Dumbledore is dead! And nothing can change that!... But now... Now there's a possibility more of us are dead, Hermione, Ron... All of us - Magnolia, there's a certain chance we don't have any relationship, friendship, or anything between us! Hell, we could hate each other or none of us are alive!" He finally turned around, her teary eyes meeting hers.
They were lucky they were deep in an alley or else it would have been awkward if someone had heard them. But nobody noticed them - lucky with James's wand in his hand, creating a barrier in the alleyway so nobody could see or hear them. They all stared at the couple in heartbreak, on the verge of pouring tears themselves.
They hated the situation they saw the two were in. They hated that they were practically arguing. Harry was furious and heartbroken seeing his fiancee slowly but rapidly forgetting the memories with one another. While Magnolia was desperately trying to remember her memories, trying to convince herself everything he said wasn't truly happening and it was all in their heads and it'll wear off.
"You say we're soulmates and if something bad happens, we'll always find a way back to one another..." She picked her head and looked at him with a pained look. Harry's eyes... He was furious, with himself - everything.
He couldn't stand himself - he shouldn't have opened that stupid box from the mail. He should have just left with the boys in that limo to the wedding.
"But what if this is a sign, that we only have one chance together..." He whispers as she furiously shakes her head. She loves him - there's a way, they'd find each other again... Right? They will always find each other back in each other's arms.
"Harry, no, I love you - I told you, no matter what-"
"Soulmates will always end up together? Right, so why can't I remember how your mother named you? Tell me, Magnolia..."
"Why can't I remember your smile after I proposed to you?" He whispers, before reaching into his pocket and taking out a diamond ring. He only just found it the night before he drunkenly told the boys everything, he had it in his pocket the whole time. He has been wanting to show Magnolia ever since then but he either forgot or was too busy with the critical situations they've been in ever since.
He stepped closer to her and she gasped seeing the ring, covering her mouth with her hands. He displayed the ring on his palm, looking at her with pain and hopeful eyes. He stood a foot away from her before taking a short breath.
"Tell me, why did I almost put this in the lost and found after thinking this was just some random ring before I realized this was the one I proposed to you with?"
authors note !!!
this isn't good...
also, let's pretend magnolia never had her ring on this whole story and is now just getting mentioned because i'm editing this chapter by chapter and i do not have the energy or time to go back and change it up so let's pretend her wedding is now just getting mentioned
