"No Mum, I'm fine I promise," Phone calls like this were routine for the mother daughter duo. Like clockwork Lia's mum, Bridget, would call the week before school was to start. Just to make sure Lia still wanted to go off to that place.
Lia looked up at her father, exasperation clear in her eyes. Not missing the way he chuckled at the predicament she found herself in yet again. "You know I just worry about you, with all of the, well you know."
"Magic, Mum just say magic," She says rolling her eyes, "Listen I've got to go, dinners about ready, I love you." After a quick goodbye, the girl ends the phone call with a click.
Tossing her head back, Lia breathes in a deep sigh before allowing herself to slouch back in her dad's comfortable La-Z-Boy. She wondered if the other half's blood she knew had this same issue with their parents. No, definitely not. Tonk's parents were still together so no issue there.
"She just worries about you, love." Her Dad, Chris, said not looking up from his novel.
The girl rolls her eyes, "I know, but like, could she worry without pissing on the fact that I'm a witch?" Conversations like this had been going on for the past six years whenever Lia was about to start school. It was her mum's way of showing her she cared, she supposed.
Her dad kicked his chair in, "She's not trying to piss on the fact you're a witch. Just pissing on the fact that I'm a wizard, come on dinner." He ruffled her hair as he passed by, heading into the kitchen.
"She's pissing on me too! I mean it's the only thing about me, that she seems to care about!" Lia exclaimed, standing and walking to grab two plates.
"She cares about more than just that love, she's your mum," Her dad said, plating out the pot roast evenly between the two. "Your mum is just a conservative woman and sadly, she wasn't able to look past all the magic. That doesn't mean she loves you any less."
Sitting at the table, Lia smiles at her dad. If she were in an emergency and Lia was asked who to call, she would say her dad. She was just closer to him, whether that be because they were both magical, or because they had the same interests. They were just closer.
Once dinner was finished and Lia had eaten more than two full grown men combined, she began cleaning the table off.
"Kiddo I can do it," Her dad began to protest but Lia just shook her head.
"You know that's not how this works, it's alright I've got this. Besides you've got work in the morning and it's already," She leaned to look at the clock in the living room, "Wow, eight thirty, it's way past your bedtime old man."
Standing from his chair her dad smiled at her, "Gosh you're just so funny," he kissed the crown of her head as he passed by.
Just as she was about to start cleaning the plates she heard her dad yell from the steps, "Oh and by the way, this old man is still pulling younger than him! Love you kiddo!"
Lia started gagging at the mental image that was now in her mind, "Ew ew ew, so gross" she whispered to herself.
