Chapter 4
So be it don't cry,
I'm letting you go and fly
After a taxing day of board meetings with stakeholders, Jungkook sought solace in his office on the top floor. His mother, an imposing figure as the chairwoman of the board, had overseen a slight increase in their stocks, prompting her to seek explanations. Despite a 10% growth for the second quarter, she aimed for a staggering 50% or more.
The sales and marketing team faced scrutiny, and it appeared that most of them would miss out on raises or promotions by year-end. Despite Jungkook and his brother's management of the company, their mother remained a force to be reckoned with.
Jungkook sighed heavily, feeling the weight of exhaustion settling over him. The past two weeks had been nothing short of draining. With the influx of new interns brought in to support the executives, the workload only seemed to grow.
The revelation of who secured the Jeon account sent shockwaves through the industry. Red Cherry, Mandate, and Liquid Gold were still reeling from the news. However, the most significant blow to the advertising world came with the announcement of the departure of the highly acclaimed and award-winning Song Jenna.
Whether she was fired, quit, or found a better opportunity remained uncertain. Speculation swirled as sources hinted at her ongoing job search. Aware of her invaluable contributions to Lynx, her departure sent ripples of unease throughout the industry.
For her competitors, it was a moment of opportunity amid the uncertainty surrounding her future.
As Jungkook stirred at the rustling in his office, he found himself face to face with his impeccably dressed mother. With a weary sigh, he acknowledged her presence.
His mother arched a perfectly groomed eyebrow, noting her son's fatigue from the day's board meetings. "So, son, no plans with Sullia tonight? She called, concerned that you hadn't confirmed the dinner reservation."
Jungkook let out a small snort. "Eomma, we went out just two days ago. I'm exhausted and completely forgot about tonight. I'll have to rain check."
Da-Hee regarded him with curiosity. "If you're feeling tired, why not take a day or two off before your business trip to Paris? It could be a perfect opportunity for you and Sullia to finalize wedding plans."
Jungkook met his mother's gaze firmly. "We're not rushing into marriage, Eomma. Sullia still has her own path to navigate. We're engaged, but it's too soon for marriage."
"Well, if you love each other, why not tie the knot? I'd love to welcome a third grandchild," she teased, gesturing playfully with her manicured hands..
"I'm not ready to be a father just yet, Eomma," Jungkook grumbled. "Besides, aren't you enjoying Jung Hyun's kids and Eunjin's little one? Cherish the grandchildren you have for now."
His mother's reaction was a simple scoff.
Her eldest son and Managing Director of the Logistics department, had married Ningning, the daughter of one of South Korea's wealthiest bankers, who now served as the company's auditor. Together, they had two children, aged five and three.
Meanwhile, his older twin sister, Eunjin, had the most adorable son imaginable, who bore a striking resemblance to his uncle Gukie and was simply enchanting.
During his two-month business trip to London, Eunjin had given birth to her son, and she had graciously allowed him the honor of naming the child. Her engineer husband had been unbothered, given the strong bond between the siblings. Thus, he had christened the child Kwan, meaning "strong one." Yet, Jungkook quickly shook his head, unwilling to entertain the thoughts drifting into uncharted territory.
He vowed never to fall in love again, as it had caused him considerable pain and anguish. Thankfully, his upcoming marriage to Sullia would be one of convenience. While she yearned for him as a husband, he had agreed only on his terms. Alongside the Bangtan Club, he was among Seoul's most eligible bachelors.
"Sweetheart, I must commend you on handling the situation so adeptly," his mother remarked, her tone laced with satisfaction. "That gold-digger got what she deserved and should slink back to the gutters she came from. I'm pleased you uncovered her true intentions with you, my son. I may have had a hand in it, but I couldn't bear to see your life ruined by someone only interested in your wealth. I truly believed she loved you, but..." Her expression darkened with indignation, casting a shadow over her otherwise attractive features.
"Eomma, it's all right...but please, let's not dwell on it further. Thinking about that ordeal just reignites my anger. She truly made a fool of me. Thank you for always having my back, Eomma. I don't know what I'd do without you," he said, rising to embrace his devoted mother. Dan-hee smiled wistfully as she returned her son's hug. Though she exuded toughness in the boardroom, she remained a loving, protective, and caring mother to her children.
After her husband's tragic death in a boating accident, she had shouldered the responsibility of raising and nurturing her children alone, a challenging time for the family. Perhaps it was during this period that her son had found solace in the company of a "sweet person" who had supported him through his final years at university. A mother's duty is to shield her children from harm, and that girl was never meant to be Ms. Jeon. Dan-hee and her best friend had already decided that their children, Sullia and Jungkook, who had been inseparable since high school, were destined to be together, sharing the same social circles and favorable genetics.
Sullia had harbored feelings for her best friend, Jungkook, for years, and her heart shattered when she discovered he had been secretly dating another girl at university for the past two years. Upon learning from mutual spies that Jungkook planned to elope after graduation to marry this girl without any family lineage, an orphan, they knew they had to intervene swiftly. She could have been the child of a prostitute, and she simply wasn't worthy of her son.
With a twinkle in their eyes, they exchanged smiles. "Ah, here are the financial reports. Ningning suggests you take a look. Si-Woo had a classical recital at school today, so she and Jung-Hyun left early, and I was too preoccupied to accompany them. I'm hoping Si-Woo will secure first place in the violin category again." His mother smiled.
"There, you sound like a proud halmeoni. Why be eager for more grandchildren when you already have two granddaughters and a cute grandson?" Jungkook chuckled, but his mother scrunched up her nose.
"Alright, well...I hope to see your kids soon," she says, pouting with her cherry red lips.
Jungkook murmured inaudibly, "Not going to happen." He is not prepared to make that kind of commitment.
"Gugs, please call Sullia and Taehyung back because your phone was constantly on voice mail. I believe Taehyung has an urgent matter to discuss with you. He sounded a little agitated. We must unite all of your BANGTAN club members and their families. Yoongi, how is he doing? Did he track her down? Why are all of you falling for the wrong girls? These days, your fortune is just a trap." She mumbles her disgust.
Jungkook grins, "When you leave my office, I'll call them. Eomma. I'm curious why Taehyung is so adamant today. And, finally, to respond to your question. Yoongi is yet another tough individual. He hired a private investigator to look into her location. So he might be in for some fantastic news. I believe Yoongi, Seokjin, and I fall in love too readily, and this becomes our trap." He gazed a little further, far away, but his mother could still feel the anguish.
He used to be such a sweet, loving, and caring person, but he changed immediately after the incident about two years ago. He'll date a girl for a week and then dump her till he's had enough of relationships. Sullia restored his smile, but his heart remained frozen. Colder than the outside temperature. But her only hope is that he will open his heart to Sullia and embrace her love. Heaven knows the girl has loved her son with all her heart since childhood, even if he ignored her much of the time in high school.
"Things will improve," his mother reassured him, her gaze steady. "Our revenge is complete. I highly doubt Jenna will ever resurface in these influential circles. She's on the job hunt now, but trust me, no one dares to hire her. That billion-dollar offer to Kang was just the cherry on top. I warned him about that gold-digger, but he wouldn't listen. Men can be blind sometimes. Perhaps she's his mistress. Gold-diggers often excel in that department. Look how she manipulated you, how infatuated you were with her. Maybe she cast some kind of spell on you. But thankfully, you've been liberated from her grasp."
"Oh, Eomma! I wasn't that foolish. Well, maybe I was. I loved her, Eomma, and I planned to marry her," Jungkook admitted quietly.
"Yes, without your family's consent or knowledge. We were all taken aback by your recklessness," his mother remarked, her eyes narrowing in disapproval.
"I'm sorry, Eomma... I was just so desperate for her to be my wife. I didn't think things through. I was young and naive. But now I have... Sullia," Jungkook sighed, wiping his brow.
"You see, a real lady would have allowed you to inform your parents first. But she was so fixated on becoming Mrs. Jeon that she disregarded everything else, as long as she had the wealth, family name, and influence that came with it. It makes my blood boil to even think of her. Did you learn anything from Lalisa?" His mother's disdain for Jenna was palpable in her bitter tone.
"Lalisa is a spoiled rich kid. She is gorgeous, yet it appears that she is unaware of my and Jenna past relationship. I don't believe Jenna ever told her about her past. She informed me that she is considering working for us following Jenna termination. I think she is considering the position of Managing Director of Marketing that you have given her... Isn't Eunjin's position that she desired Eomma? "He drew his brows together. His sister was interested in the post.
"No concerns, Eunjin will understand. She lacks assertiveness and is still dubious of her capabilities. We can't afford to let her take the controls. Lalisa has a lot of potentials, and it's because Jenna is a lowlife. She might have to say goodbye to her best friend. Remember that Lalisa comes from an affluent family, and it's possible that she was also milking her best friend for money. A gold digger is always going to be a gold digger. She uses sexual favours to cheat and scheme her way up the Lynx corporate ladder." His mother appeared irritated.
She has an unfathomable loathing for Jenna. She will not relent in her efforts to ruin the girl who destroyed him. His friends resented her as well, and friends who once adored her turn against her as well. She had lost her buddies, and her sister would have been dismissed a long time ago if she hadn't been so talented in one of Seokjin's restaurants due to association. Still, Seokjin didn't want to lose her, especially since she is a single mother with a five-year-old daughter.
"Yes, Eomma, we can call it a day. Don't you have a Banyan Tree Club spa appointment?" He raises his eyebrows towards her.
"Oh my goodness...Yes, your paternal halmeoni will be visiting for a week. I'm not looking forward to that one visit." His mother is unimpressed. His halmeoni is a well-known author, and Namjoon is her publisher. She is the author of raunchy romance novels. She is South Korea's, Danielle Steele. Sassy and extremely wealthy. The Jeon dynasty owns jeon Shipping until the death of Jeon, the first of her Jungkook's father, who inherits the company from his father.
The sisters gained control of the beauty salons. His grandmother, on the other hand, is still a shareholder in all of the enterprises. His mother wants her shares, but she doesn't want to give them and sell them, which will make his mom the most significant shareholder... She's still a big torn in his eommas flesh.
Jungkook smirked, and she rushed out of his office, alarmed, not to be late. That's fantastic. He can finally relax. But just as he was ready to sit down, a little whirlwind rushed up to him and grabbed his leg.
"Samchon...oh samchon (uncle)...oh samchon (uncle)!!!!!" Jungkook laughs and picks up the small boy in his arms, smooching his plump cheeks. He adores his nephew. He resembles his mother and uncle.
Jungkook shook his head and turned to face the door. Eunjin stood there with her arms wrapped about her torso, a broad smile on her face. She's stunning...well, the fact that they're twins helps. Although her husband is having an affair, she appears to be in good spirits. Eunjin simply shrugged. She loves him far too much, and he refuses to divorce because they are married out of community of property. If they divorce, he will lose a lot of money and his lavish lifestyle.
He smiled at her as he glanced at her. She is a carbon copy of him, and this was unusual for twins of different genders. She is, however, more introverted and a real pushover. She craves and longs for their mother's approval in everything. His sister is constantly in search of affirmation, and he's perplexed as to why she let everyone walk all over her.
Sullia and Ning Ning are more loved and respected by their mother since they are go-getters and formidable in their fields. Eunjin is a senior manager in the Marketing Department who will be in charge of the commercial with Lynx Advertising. If she finds out that her desired position has been offered to Lalisa, she will be heartbroken.
She was hesitant to work with Jenna, but now that Jenna has left the company, she has taken full authority over the project and likes Lalisa. Because of her Jenna past with her younger twin brother, Jenna always made her nervous.
"Hey, Bro... Nina, Kwannie's Aupair, has an embassy appointment, so she brought the little man to me. But please accept my heartfelt apologies, brother. Lalisa and I are putting the finishing touches on the commercial. Today we're shooting at the docks. Could you please just take care of Kwan?" He was ecstatic to see his favourite uncle. Jungkook smiled because his tiny nephew was happy, and he even told his mother to leave right away.
Jungkook smiled and lowered Kwan onto the seat before going to his office cupboard drawer to retrieve his controls so his tiny nephew could play cute PlayStation games for toddlers. Kwan was delighted, and he and his uncle will spend some time together.
"No problem, just go to work. You are welcome to pick him up at my penthouse. All I need to do is cancel my date with Sullia. She genuinely loves Kwan; perhaps we can go on a date there at home". He motioned to her that everything was fine. Eunjin breathes a sigh of relief. Her Eomma had a spa appointment and wanted to watch Kwan, but Kwan can be a handful. She rushed out of her brother's office, kissing him on the cheek.
Kwan squealed with delight when his uncle sat next to him, and they played togetherโJungkook's grin. Maybe fatherhood wouldn't be so horrible after all. Sullia is not eager to lose her model-like figure so quickly, and he is still far too busy for a child, but he has a lot of experience helping raise his nieces and nephew.
While his nephew was happily occupied, he walked to his desk and made some phone calls. He began by talking with Sullia. She wasn't thrilled with the cancellation, but she loves the prospect of the three of them alone in his penthouse. He has never let her stay overnight in their nearly a year of dating. She longs to be physical with her fiance, but Jungkook is not interested.
He has told her countless times that he loves her, yet there is still a lingering pain in his eyes that makes her wonder if the love is romantic or platonic. She despises Jenna for causing him such pain. It took her months to persuade him to give her a chance, and she is not about to ruin it. She had gotten her man.
She became jealous when she discovered he was in a relationship with Jenna. FATE, on the other hand, granted her another chance. They attempted dating when they were 15 in high school, but he was too popular, and the girls were all over the young Bangtan Maknae.
Jimin dated gorgeous girls in high school, but he met "the one" on one of his travels. he also lost her due to his flirtations, and he refused to commit to the relationship. Jungkook was afraid of rejection, and Taehyung was dating a girl at university, but after a tragic accident for two years, he gave up on true love. It was as if something was holding him back.
He lost nearly six months of his life as a result of amnesia. Six months cause a void in his mind. It's been two years, yet those six months will never be recalled. His Bangtan Boys were a massive help in reconstructing what happened in his life during those years. However, something is still missing. Seokjin, the eldest, is still single.
He sighed deeply as he returned Taehyung's call after hanging up.
"Hey Taetae, how are you?" He cherishes his Bangtan Brother.
"Where have you been? The Bangtan Club will be on Seokjin's yacht. Are you and Sullia joining all of us?"
Taehyung sounded a little irritated. Jungkook smirks.
"I'm sorry, friend, I've been busy with meetings all day. And now I've been entrusted with looking after Kwan while his mother is shooting the commercial." Jungkook notifies Taehyung.
"Wait a minute...the Lynx account. Is it true that Jenna was fired, or did she resign...? We were all taken aback, and the media world is bewildering.'
Taehyung sound flabbergasted.
Silence...
"Oh, Kookie...please tell me you're not a part of this. She enjoyed her job. Why are you being so cruel? She worked very hard to that executive level." Taehyung sounds confused. He was fond of Jenna, and her betrayal equally took him aback. They were all. Jungkook was so enamoured with her that he planned to elope and marry her in the Maldives without his mother's knowledge.
"You wouldn't understand, Tae. Eomma,.. my Eomma-" Jungkook sound deflated. He refuses to explain his motivations.
"OK, don't say anything else. Y... your mothers doing? Don't you think she was punished well enough? How can you despise her so much, Kookie...you were head over heels in love with her. Why? You completely ruined her life. According to sources, she is currently looking for work. They spotted her in a trendy coffee shop, sending out e-mails. Even though she is excellent in her career, she lacks genuine industry friends. I heard she informed one of my staff members who came to buy coffee that she has been trying her luck with small startups, and I believe she even contacted Liquid Gold, who wanted to hire her at one point but didn't have any vacancies. It's heartbreaking, Kookie. She appeared miserable and lonely."
"She betrayed her promise, Tae. She cheated on me with her scumbag adoptive brother!!! What kind of love or devotion was that, and she stole my Momma's money to support her family? I detest her... I'm more disgusted for allowing myself to be taken advantage of by a gold-digger. She was in my past. Forgotten. And what did she anticipate? Doors will always close in front of her. She needs to get out of Seoul for good." Jungkook expresses himself aggressively.
Taehyung was sceptical, saying, "Her life is here in Seoul, and she is still on the lookout for her mother. But we all believe her mother was linked with the mob and was murdered."
"I don't care. She was merely a speck in the ocean. She had us all fooled. Taehyung had us all deceived. She took advantage of us and threw my love back in my face. It's something I'll never forgive her for. Tae, she ruined me." His voice cracked, but he inhaled deeply despite Taehyung's ability to detect the pain in his voice.
"Do you still...love her, Kookie?"Taehyung inquired cautiously.
"Taehyung, erm...I...I...need to go. Another conference call is coming in from two dock managers. I'll talk to Sullia about meeting up this weekend. Tell Seokjin to include us. We'll see you this weekend. Bye!" He hung up after taking a deep breath. Kwan received a gentle smile from him.
Is he still in love with Song Jenna... not! She is a relic from the past, and she will remain there.
"Kwan...would you like some Panda Express?" he casually inquires of his young nephew.
"Yeah!" Kwan was overjoyed, and Jungkook unplugged the console. Pick up Kwan and his briefcase before heading home to unwind with his beautiful fiance...
....with Jenna forgotten in the recesses of his mind and...heart.
