𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐒 𝐍𝐎𝐖, bouncing on the back of the massive boar as it thundered westward. The sun was dipping below the horizon, casting long shadows across the desert. The boar's bristles felt like sitting on a giant steel brush grinding over gravel, and no one would be sorry to stop.
Percy grimaced as the landscape transformed. The mountains gave way to flat, dry plains. The grass and scrub brush thinned out until they were riding across an endless stretch of desert.
Finally, as the sun slipped away completely, the boar snorted and came to a halt at a shallow creek bed.
The boar began to drink from the muddy water, then casually ripped a towering saguaro cactus out of the ground and chewed it, needles and all.
"This is as far as he'll go," Grover announced, sliding off the boar's back. "We need to get off while he's eating."
Nobody needed convincing. One by one, the group clambered down, groaning as they tried to walk off their saddle sores. Percy stumbled away from the boar, rubbing his back.
After devouring a third cactus and slurping more muddy water, the boar let out a loud belch, spun around, and charged back toward the east, vanishing into the distance.
"It likes the mountains better," Percy guessed.
"I can't blame it," Thalia said, brushing dust from her jacket. "Look."
Ahead of them stretched a cracked two-lane road, half-buried in sand. Beyond it lay a small cluster of buildings—too few to be called a town. A boarded-up house sat next to a taco shop that looked like it hadn't been open since before Zoe Nightshade was born. A white stucco post office stood nearby, a crooked sign reading GILA CLAW, ARIZONA hanging above its door.
But what really caught their attention was the landscape beyond.
"Oh," Iris murmured, squinting at the horizon.
"Whoa," Percy echoed, staring.
The hills weren't hills at all. They were massive piles of junk—heaps of rusted cars, broken appliances, and scrap metal stretching as far as they could see. It was a junkyard that seemed to go on forever.
"Something tells me we're not going to find a car rental here," Thalia said, her sarcasm cutting through the silence.
"Yeah, tell me about it," Iris muttered. Thalia glanced at her, and the two exchanged exasperated looks before sighing in unison.
Percy crossed his arms, ignoring them. "I don't suppose you've got another wild boar up your sleeve?"
Grover didn't answer. He was sniffing the air, his expression tense. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his acorns and tossed them onto the sand. Then, with his reed pipes, he played a soft tune. The acorns rearranged themselves into a pattern, one that made no sense to Percy.
Grover frowned, his face pinched with worry. "That's us," he said, pointing to six acorns clustered together. "Those six nuts right there."
"Which one is me?" Percy asked.
"The little deformed one," Zoe said without missing a beat.
Iris burst into laughter, clutching her sides, but stopped abruptly when Percy glared at her. She quickly looked away, suppressing the rest of her chuckles.
"Oh, shut up," Percy muttered, shooting Zoe a look.
Grover ignored the exchange and pointed to a cluster of acorns farther to the left. "That's trouble," he said.
"A monster?" Thalia asked, her hand moving to her spear.
Grover shook his head, looking uneasy. "I don't smell anything, and that doesn't make sense. But the acorns don't lie. Our next challenge. . ."
He trailed off, pointing toward the junkyard. The last rays of sunlight cast eerie shadows over the piles of metal, making them look like alien mountains under a bruised, purple sky.
The group decided to camp for the night and face the junkyard in the morning. None of them felt particularly brave about exploring piles of scrap metal in the dark.
Zoe and Bianca had six sleeping bags and foam mattresses from their tiny backpacks, which Iris had to admit was actually impressive. Their bows and quivers seemed enchanted too—they appeared when needed and vanished when not.
Iris really wanted one of those bags.
As the night turned chilly, Grover and Percy collected old boards from the ruined house. Thalia gave them a quick zap with her electric powers to ignite a fire, while Iris stood by, arms crossed, clearly uninterested in getting her hands dirty.
"Thanks for the help," Percy said sarcastically, glancing at her.
"No problem," Iris replied with a smirk, not budging an inch.
Before long, the fire was crackling, and the group made themselves as comfortable as they could in the ghost town under the stars.
"The stars are out," Zoe said, her voice softer than usual.
She was right. The night sky was dazzling, with millions of stars scattered like diamonds. Without the interference of city lights, the Milky Way stretched overhead in all its glory.
"Amazing," Bianca whispered. "I've never actually seen the Milky Way before."
"This is nothing," Zoe said, a wistful edge to her tone. "In the old days, there were even more. Whole constellations have vanished because of human light pollution."
Iris looked at her like she was crazy, "What?"
"You talk like you're not human," Percy said, looking at her curiously.
Zoe raised an eyebrow. "I am a Hunter. I care deeply about what happens to the wild places of this world. Can the same be said for thee?"
"For you," Thalia corrected, sitting closer to the fire. "Not thee."
"But you use you at the beginning of a sentence," Zoe argued.
"And at the end," Thalia replied. "No thou. No thee. Just you," Thalia said firmly.
Zoe threw up her hands in frustration. "I hate this language. It changes too fucking often!"
"Wow calm down, just a language," said Iris gesturing for her to stop, Zoe did.
Grover, who had been staring up at the stars, sighed. "If only Pan were here, he would set things right."
Zoe nodded solemnly.
"Maybe it was the coffee," Grover muttered after a moment. "I was drinking coffee, and then the wind came. Maybe if I drank more coffee..."
Percy couldn't help but feel that coffee had nothing to do with what happened in Cloudcroft, but he didn't want to crush Grover's hopes. He thought back to the rubber rat and the tiny birds coming alive with the wind.
"Grover, do you really think that was Pan?" Percy asked. "I mean, I know you want it to be."
"He sent us help," Grover said with conviction. "I don't know how or why, but it was his presence. After this quest is done, I'm going back to New Mexico and drinking a lot of coffee. It's the best lead we've had in two thousand years. I was so close."
Percy stayed quiet, not wanting to dampen his friend's excitement.
"What I want to know," Thalia said, breaking the silence, "is how Bianca destroyed one of those zombies. There are a lot more out there, and we need to figure out how to fight them."
"Yeah. . . How did you do that?" asked Iris turning to her.
Bianca shifted uncomfortably under everyone's gaze. "I don't know," she said. "I just stabbed it, and it went up in flames."
"Maybe there's something special about your knife," Percy suggested.
"It is the same as mine," Zoe said. "Celestial bronze, yes. But mine did not affect the warriors in that way."
"Maybe you have to hit the skeleton in a certain spot," Percy added.
Bianca looked uneasy as everyone focused on her.
"Never mind," Zoe said gently. "We will find the answer. In the meantime, we should plan our next move. When we get through this junkyard, we must continue west. If we can find a road, we can hitchhike to the nearest city. I believe that would be Las Vegas."
Percy opened his mouth to object, remembering his disastrous past experience in that city, but Bianca beat him to it.
"No!" she said abruptly, her voice filled with fear. She looked pale, like she'd just been dropped into the middle of a nightmare.
Zoe frowned. "Why not?"
Bianca took a shaky breath. "I... I think Nico and I stayed there for a while. When we were traveling. And then... I can't remember..."
"You. . . okay?" asked Iris going over to the girl.
"Bianca," Percy suddenly said slowly, "that hotel you stayed at... was it possibly called the Lotus Hotel and Casino?"
Her eyes widened in shock. "How could you know that?"
"Oh gods," said Iris.
"Oh, shit," Percy muttered, feeling a sinking dread in his stomach. "Damn it."
"Wait," Thalia said, her voice edged with suspicion. "What is the Lotus Casino?"
"A couple of years ago," Percy explained, "Grover, Annabeth, Iris, and I got trapped there. It's designed so you never want to leave. We thought we were inside for an hour, but when we came out, five days had passed. It messes with time."
"Yeah, I hated that fucking place," Iris added bitterly, crossing her arms. Percy nodded agreeing with the latter.
Bianca shook her head quickly. "No, that's not possible."
"You said somebody came and got you out," Percy pressed.
"Yes," Bianca said.
"What did he look like? What did he say?" Percy asked.
"I... I don't remember," she stammered, her voice trembling. "Please, I really don't want to talk about this."
Zoe leaned forward, her brow furrowed with concern. "You said Washington, D.C., had changed when you went back last summer. You didn't remember the subway being there."
"Yes, but—"
"Bianca," Zoe interrupted gently, "can you tell me the name of the president of the United States right now?"
Bianca rolled her eyes. "Don't be silly." She answered correctly, naming the current president.
"And who was the president before that?" Zoe asked.
Bianca hesitated, her brow furrowing. "Roosevelt," she said after a pause.
Zoe's expression tightened. "Theodore or Franklin?"
"Franklin," Bianca answered. "F.D.R."
"Like F.D.R. Drive?" Percy asked, trying to connect the dots. That was about all he knew about Franklin Roosevelt.
Zoe took a shaky breath. "Bianca, F.D.R. was not the last president. That was about seventy years ago."
"That's impossible," Bianca whispered, staring at her hands as if to confirm they weren't wrinkled and old. "I. . . I'm not that old."
Thalia's expression softened, sadness flickering in her eyes. "It's okay, Bianca. The important thing is you and Nico are safe. You made it out."
"You'll be okay," said Iris.
"But how?" Percy asked, still baffled. "We were only in there for an hour, and it was a struggle to escape. How could you and Nico have gotten out after so long?"
"I told you," Bianca said, her voice shaking. "A man came and said it was time to leave, and—"
"But who? Why would he do that?" Percy pressed, determined to understand.
Before Bianca could answer, the road ahead suddenly blazed with light. A pair of headlights appeared out of nowhere, cutting through the darkness.
For a brief moment, Percy half-hoped it was Apollo coming to give them a ride again, but the engine was far too quiet to be the sun chariot. Besides, it was nighttime.
They all scrambled to grab their sleeping bags and move out of the way as a sleek, deathly white limousine slid silently to a stop in front of them.
"What now?" Iris muttered, glaring at the vehicle.
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐎'𝐒 𝐃𝐎𝐎𝐑 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐈𝐑𝐈𝐒 thought she wouldn't see ever in her life walked out, and suddenly pointed their sword to Percy throat. Immediately, Zoe and Bianca drew their bows and arrows, Iris had her dagger ready in her hand as Percy slowly moved back, the sword now under his chin.
Ares grinned cruelly. "Not so fast now, are you, punk?"
He was massive, his leather biker's jacket creaking as he moved. Black jeans, a white muscle shirt, and combat boots completed his intimidating look.
"Ares," Percy grunted.
The war god's smile widened as he glanced at the others, unimpressed. "At ease, people." He snapped his fingers. The sound echoed in the night, and just like that, their weapons clattered to the ground as if yanked from their hands by invisible forces.
"This is a friendly meeting." Ares dug the point of his sword slightly deeper into Percy's chin, causing Iris to tighten her hold on her dagger. She glanced toward Zoe and Bianca, whose expressions mirrored her concern.
"Of course, I'd like to take your head for a trophy," Ares continued, his voice dripping with mockery, "but someone wants to see you. And I never behead my enemies in front of a lady."
"What lady?" Thalia demanded.
Ares turned his attention to her, then to Iris. His smirk deepened. "Well, well. I heard you were back," he said, addressing Thalia before shoving Percy aside and lowering his blade. "Thalia, daughter of Zeus. You're not hanging out with very good company."
"Shut up, Ares," Iris snapped, stepping forward. Her tone was sharp and full of irritation.
The war god turned to her, his smirk growing more amused. "Ah, Elliott, daughter of Aphrodite. This will be good. Didn't think I'd see you here, huh?"
Iris blinked, confused, unsure what he meant. Ares muttered something under his breath, just low enough for her to catch fragments.
"That's why she was so happy coming here," he muttered, almost to himself.
"What?" Iris asked, her brows furrowing, her confusion evident.
Ares chuckled but didn't clarify. "What's your business, Ares?" Thalia asked sharply, cutting through the tension.
"Who's in the car?" Iris added, her voice a little more cautious now.
Ares turned back to her, clearly enjoying her attention. "Oh, she'll definitely love this," he said with a sly grin. He nodded to where Iris was behind Percy, the boy had stepped in front of her when Ares approached her, the god looked back and forth between the two.
"I doubt she wants to meet the rest of you. Particularly not them." He jerked his chin toward Zoe and Bianca before focusing entirely on Iris. "But Elliott, on the other hand. . ."
Iris's confusion only deepened, and she exchanged a wary glance with Percy.
"Why don't you all go get some tacos while you wait?" Ares said, waving his hand dismissively. "Only take Percy a few minutes."
"Wow, he's not going alone," Iris said firmly, stepping closer to Percy. Her tone was defensive, and Percy raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised.
His smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth, but before he could comment, Iris quickly added, "We should all be here." She glanced away, a little flustered at her own reaction.
"We will not leave him alone with thee, Lord Ares," Zoe said firmly.
"Besides," Grover said hesitantly, "the taco place is closed."
Ares sighed dramatically, then snapped his fingers again. The taqueria down the road lit up instantly. The CLOSED sign flipped to OPEN, and the boarded doors fell off as if by magic.
"You were saying, goat boy?" Ares said, smirking.
Percy stepped forward, his tone steady. "Go on, guys. I'll handle this." He tried to sound more confident than he felt. He nodded to Iris, but she frowned and shook her head.
"You heard the boy," Ares said, mockingly. "He's big and strong. He's got things under control."
Reluctantly, the group began moving toward the taco shop, casting glances back at Percy. Ares waited until they were a few steps away before opening the limo door, gesturing like a chauffeur.
"Get inside, punk," he said, his voice dark. "And mind your manners. She's not as forgiving of rudeness as I am."
Iris lingered, unmoving. "I have a feeling that I should stay. So, I will," she said firmly, crossing her arms.
Ares rolled his eyes. "Yeah, do whatever. Just stay outside the car, yeah? She doesn't care anyway. Told me not to touch you."
Iris frowned, unsure what to make of his words, but before she could respond, Ares had already turned back to Percy who was already making his way into the limo.
That was until she caught a glimpse of who was inside, almost instantly she leaped towards the car door, "Wait, Mom⎯⎯."
But the door slammed in her face.
𝐈𝐑𝐈𝐒 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐎 𝐀 𝐆𝐔𝐘 𝐖𝐇𝐎 had walked up to her while she had been waiting for Percy to come out. The guy whose name she forgot a minute into the conversation, had been asking her the same questions for the last few minutes and to be honest she really wanted him to leave.
He was persistent, though. Too persistent. He leaned one arm against the wall, trying far too hard to look casual, while she crossed her arms tightly, hoping he'd take the hint, "So, where did you say you were from again?"
"Oh, I don't think I answered that," said Iris, internally rolling her eyes. The guy pressed on, and so she lied to him.
"Hey, would you want to grab a drink⎯⎯," asked the guy, before he was interrupted by a car door slamming. Iris muttered a quick, "Gotta go, bye."
"You're lucky, punk." Ares shoved Percy back from the limo, his tone dripping with menace. Iris arrived just in time to see Percy stagger back, glaring up at the god of war.
"Be grateful," Ares added.
"For what?" Percy snapped, his voice sharp with defiance.
"That we're being so nice. If it was up to me⎯⎯"
"So why haven't you killed me?" Percy shot back, his recklessness rising to the surface. Iris, standing a few feet behind, flinched slightly at his boldness but kept her gaze fixed on Ares, her hand resting lightly on the dagger at her side.
Ares nodded, almost amused, like Percy had finally said something that made sense.
"I'd love to kill you, seriously," Ares said. "But see, I got a situation. Word on Olympus is that you might start the biggest war in history. I can't risk messing that up. Besides, Aphrodite thinks you're some kinda soap-opera star or something. I kill you, that makes me look bad with her. But don't worry. I haven't forgotten my promise. Some day soon, kid⎯real soon⎯you're going to raise your sword to fight, and you're going to remember the wrath of Ares."
Percy's fists balled up at his sides. Iris could see the tension in his stance, and she knew he was seconds away from saying something reckless again.
"Why wait?" Percy growled. "I beat you once. How's that ankle healing up?"
"Percy, stop." said Iris but she went unheard. Ares grinned, a crooked, dangerous expression. "Not bad, punk. But you got nothing on the master of taunts. I'll start the fight when I'm good and ready. Until then. . . Get lost."
With a snap of Ares' fingers, the world spun violently, like a red storm had swallowed them whole. Iris barely had time to brace herself as she and Percy hit the ground, the force of the spinning knocking them off their feet. Though Percy had grabbed her before she hit the ground.
When they scrambled to stand up again, the limousine was gone. So was the road. The taco restaurant. The entire town of Gila Claw.
Iris dusted herself off, looking around at the empty landscape with wide eyes. "What just happened?" she muttered, half to Percy, half to herself.
Percy exhaled, shaking his head. "Ares happened." He glanced at her. "You okay?"
She nodded, though her fingers still gripped the handle of her dagger. "Yeah."
"Hey, who was the guy with you?" asked Percy turning fully to her.
Iris turned pink and stuttered, "Oh no one, he just wanted to talk and wanted my number."
"Did you give it to him?" asked Percy taking a step forward.
"No, you came out before," said Iris. "Oh," answered Percy looking down at his shoes. He looked back at her as she turned to see where the others were.
She then realised something and turned to him quickly, "You met my mom."
"Yeah. . ." he said almost dreamily. Iris snapped her fingers in his face and turned to her annoyed, "What?"
"Well. . . what did she say to you?"
"Uhm, I don't⎯⎯ she said she'll see you later, and that⎯⎯ that she loves you, and to tell your dad to not cut her roses in the garden," said Percy. Iris looked at him sceptically but nodded it was something her mother would say.
"Fine," she muttered, relaxing slightly but still watching him closely.
Before Percy could say anything else, the sound of footsteps crunching on debris interrupted them. Bianca and the others approached, their faces etched with curiosity and concern.
"What did she want with you?" Bianca asked.
Percy hesitated before answering, shifting uncomfortably under their scrutiny. "Oh, uh, not sure," he said. "She said to be careful in her husband's junkyard. She said not to pick anything up."
Zoe's eyes narrowed, suspicion flashing across her face. "The goddess of love would not make a special trip to tell thee that. Be careful, Percy. Aphrodite has led many heroes astray."
"Hey!" said Iris, Zoe just ignored her which made Iris scoff, muttering a few curse words.
"For once, I agree with Zoe," Thalia said, her tone serious. "You can't trust Aphrodite. No offense Iris."
"Wow, thanks guys. Please do talk shit about my mom in front of me, I'm loving it." said Iris, Thalia gave her an apologetic look but Iris had looked away.
As they spoke, Iris crossed her arms and tilted her head at Percy, her gaze scrutinizing him like she could pull the truth from his expression.
Meanwhile, Grover was staring at Percy, his eyes wide and thoughtful. Percy could feel Grover's empathic gaze boring into him, and he got the distinct sense that Grover knew exactly what Aphrodite had talked to him about.
"So," Percy said quickly, desperate to change the subject, "how do we get out of here?"
"That way," Zoe said, pointing with confidence. "That is west."
"How can you tell?" Percy asked, genuinely puzzled.
Under the full moon's glow, Zoe rolled her eyes dramatically, making her irritation clear. "Ursa Major is in the north," she explained, pointing toward a constellation that was faintly visible. "Which means that must be west."
"Oh, yeah," Percy said awkwardly. "The bear thing."
Zoe's expression hardened, her voice suddenly sharp. "Show some respect. It was a fine bear. A worthy opponent."
"You act like it was real," Percy said, raising an eyebrow.
Iris snickered softly under her breath but quickly masked it when Zoe shot her a glare.
"Guys," Grover broke in, his voice filled with urgency. "Look!"
The group followed his gaze as they reached the crest of a junk mountain. Under the pale moonlight, piles of metal objects stretched out before them, glinting faintly.
Broken heads of bronze horses, metal legs from statues, smashed chariots, shields, and swords were scattered everywhere. Among them lay more modern items: cars gleaming gold and silver, refrigerators, washing machines, and even computer monitors.
"Whoa," Bianca whispered, her voice tinged with awe. "That stuff... some of it looks like real gold."
Iris let out a low whistle, her eyes scanning the glinting heaps of junk. "Okay, this place is fucking weird," she muttered, gripping her dagger tighter just in case.
"It is," Thalia said grimly, her spear at the ready. "Like Percy said, don't touch anything. This is the junkyard of the gods."
"Junk?" Grover asked, his voice filled with disbelief as he picked up a beautiful crown made of gold, silver, and jewels. The crown was broken on one side, like it had been cleaved by an axe. "You call this junk?" Without hesitation, he bit off a point and began to chew. "It's delicious!"
Thalia immediately swatted the crown out of his hands. "I'm fucking serious!" she snapped.
Iris, who had been standing nearby, reacted quickly and smacked Grover on the back of the head, making him yelp. "Listen to her," she said sternly, her dagger glinting in the moonlight as she gestured toward the piles of debris.
"Look!" Bianca called out suddenly, her voice cutting through the tension. She raced down the hill, her feet skidding over bronze coils and golden plates as she tripped and stumbled. Finally, she stopped and picked up a bow that glowed silver in the moonlight. "A Hunter's bow!"
She barely had time to admire it before the bow began to shrink in her hands, transforming into a hair clip shaped like a crescent moon. "It's just like Percy's sword!" Bianca said excitedly.
Zoe's face darkened, her expression grim. "Leave it, Bianca," she commanded.
"But—"
"It is here for a reason," Zoe interrupted. Her voice was firm, leaving no room for argument. "Anything thrown away in this junkyard must stay in this yard. It is defective. Or cursed."
Bianca hesitated, glancing at the hair clip longingly before reluctantly setting it back down.
"I don't fucking like this place," Thalia muttered, her eyes scanning the eerie landscape as she tightened her grip on her spear.
"You think we're going to get attacked by killer refrigerators?" Percy asked, his tone light but with an undercurrent of unease. "Shut up, Jackson." said Iris.
Thalia shot him a hard look. "Zoe is right, Percy. Things get thrown away here for a reason. Now come on, let's get across the yard."
"That's the second time you've agreed with Zoe," Percy muttered under his breath.
Iris smirked slightly but kept her focus sharp, her eyes darting around the junkyard. Thalia ignored him, leading the group forward.
They began picking their way through the hills and valleys of junk. Iris stayed close to Percy, her dagger drawn as she kept her gaze scanning for anything that might move unexpectedly. The piles of broken treasures and strange items seemed endless, and if it hadn't been for Ursa Major guiding them, they might've gotten hopelessly lost in the labyrinth of junk.
Despite their caution, the allure of the bizarre objects was hard to resist. Percy couldn't help but pick up an electric guitar shaped like Apollo's lyre. He strummed it once, wincing when it let out a distorted screech.
Iris scowled and shook her head at him, "Wow Kelp Head, you really don't listen."
"But look at it." said Percy, until he saw the look on her face to which he put it back down and walked to her side. "Sorry. . . princess." He muttered with full sarcasm.
"I will punch your pretty face, Jackson." said Iris.
Percy smirked down to her, and leaned in close, "You think I have a pretty face—," He didn't get to finish his sentence before she had shoved his face away from hers. Iris looked away towards Grover.
Grover found a broken tree made of metal, its pieces scattered across the ground. Some of the branches still held golden birds, and when he touched them, they whirred and twitched, as though trying to flap their wings.
Iris sighed as she glanced at the boys. "Seriously, you two? Could you not?" she muttered, shaking her head but staying alert as they moved forward.
Finally, the edge of the junkyard came into view, the faint glow of a highway stretching through the desert just half a mile ahead. Relief began to settle over the group⎯⎯until they noticed something blocking their path.
"What is that?" Bianca gasped, her voice trembling slightly as she stared ahead.
