THE NEXT day at school was relatively normal with Emma being annoying and clinging to Daphne the entire day. At some point even Chris started doing that and the red-head was sure she'd snapped at the duo more than at least 10 times an hour.ย
"But then Chris was like, 'dude, don't you ever read?' and the guy snapped. Needless to say Chris had a black eye for the rest of the week."ย
"Will you stop it with the embarrassing stories!"
"No, I physically can't keep my mouth shut about this stuff, it deserves to be out in the world."
Daphne wasn't sure how these two managed to keep on bickering every second of the day, they were like an old couple; either that or siblings who had to share a room, "Oh my god, will you two just shut up?" The red-head retorted and threw her head back in frustration. She was in the middle of Emma and Chris as they walked out of their class.
Some girl was distributing flyers that said, "Tina's Halloween Bash. Come and get sheet-faced." Daphne got one of those along with Chris but Emma didn't for some reason. Without thinking Daphne went back and asked for one more flyer and handed it to Emma, who looked at the red-head with a shocked expression on her face.
The red-head didn't say anything about her actions, almost as if she didn't do anything and Emma settled with a small smile on her face which was shared with Chris. Daphne was warming up to them.
"What are you gonna go as?" Chris asked as they walked down the hallway.
"Devil." Daphne said.
"I'll probably go as a druggie or something." Emma's statement caused the red-head to laugh a little as the three reached their lockers which were conveniently right beside each other.
"You guys are so basic." Chris commented with an eye-roll as he opened his locker and kept his books in, others doing the same.
Suddenly there was a shriek heard from a few lockers down as the three teenagers turned their attention towards the noise. It was Steve; the guy from yesterday.
He was laughing and kissing someone, presumably his girlfriend. Then she noticed the gaze of another boy standing beside the brunette, who looked at her like a sad puppy. The boy soon left and the brunette's eyes followed his figure with an expression that Daphne could only describe as longing.
This made the red-head smirk, "Interesting." She started walking ahead as the two others scrambled to follow her, "Interesting?" Emma's question was left unanswered.
"Come on, what was interesting?"
Daphne left the building after saying a short bye to the two other teenagers, and made her way to the parking where Billy's car was parked.
Billy was leaning on the hood of his Camaro with a cigarette in his hands. The car was unlocked so Daphne sat in the front seat. A few minutes later, Max appeared as she picked up her skateboard, "You're late again."
"Yeah, I had to get catch-up homework."
"Jesus, I don't care. You're late again and you're skating home. You hear me?"
Daphne rolled her eyes at Billy's bossy behavior but just ignored it when he got in and started the engine.ย As a rock song played on radio, Billy scoffed, "God, this place is such a shithole."
"It's not that bad." Max said from the backseat as Daphne sighed internally, knowing what Billy was gonna do, "No?"
Billy lowered down the windows and deeply inhaled, "You smell that, Max? That's actually shit. Cow shit."
"My god." Daphne scrunched her face up in disgust. "Well, I don't see any cows." Max said as she lowered the windows back up again. Billy scoffed again, "Clearly, you haven't met the high school girls." Daphne chuckled at that, "The one thing I actually agree with him on."
"So what, you like it here now?"
"No." Max immediately replied, "Then why are you defending it?"ย
"I'm not."
"Sure sounds like it."
Max was only digging herself a grave at the moment, Daphne thought, "It's just we're stuck here, so..."
"Hmm. You're right. We're stuck here. And whose fault is that?" ย Daphne knew that Billy was looking at her too, "Don't you dare involve me into this." The red-head murmured.
"Yours." Max mumbled, but even Daphne had heard what she said as she closed her eyes in anticipation of Billy's yelling, "What'd you say?"
"Nothing."
"You say it's my fault?"
"No." Max knew where this was going.
"You know whose fault it is. Say it. Max...say it." The atmosphere in the car was tense, Billy suddenly turned around and screamed, "Say it!"
Immediately Billy started speeding and acting like a drunk maniac, when Max leaned forward as she saw her friends. Daphne saw the four kids on bicycles too.
"Billy, slow down."
"Oh, these your new hick friends?"
"No! I don't know them!"
"I guess you won't care if I hit 'em then, huh? I get bonus points, I get 'em all in one go?"
"No, Billy, stop. It's not funny."
Daphne could see the kids getting closer. She thought he would stop. "Billy, come on, stop it, it's not funny! Stop!" Billy ignored her, "Daphne, please, do something!" Max begged.
The car was dangerously close to the kids when Daphne had enough.
"God, stop it, you asshole!" Daphne said as she reached over and turned the wheel in the opposite direction of the kids, "I don't wanna die yet, and I don't wanna be labeled as the murderer's sister, so keep your shit together, moron!"
Daphne cooled down as she sat back in her seat comfortably, "Well then, you should've just said it was your fault and we could all move on with our happy lives!"
"Clearly, you're dumb enough to not know whose fault it was. Don't you look in the mirror everyday, you self-conceited bastard." Daphne scoffed. She was always the one with snide and underhanded words and comments. She knew it unnerved her father and Billy, but it worked to effectively get them to shut up or leave her alone. She would calmly get under their skin.
"You aren't getting away with this, bitch."
"As if you're gonna hit me."
The topic was dropped there as they approached their house. As relieving as it was, Billy had never once done more than shout at Daphne. She didn't feel safe given her brother's middle school track record of getting physical but he'd never raised his hand at her. She would never say it out loud, but she was grateful it wasn't at that stage. But her father wouldn't ever shy away from hitting her or Billy, and whenever it would come to that Daphne would go back to being a naive 11 year old, scared and hiding in a corner, closing her eyes, ready to get it over with.ย
'Like ripping off a band-aid,' she used to repeat to herself.ย
She hated feeling that way.
She hated who she was before.
Maybe that was why she had stolen money from her father, maybe that was why she spent that money on learning mixed martial arts in California at 14, maybe that was why she had the confidence to stand up to the bullies residing within the four walls of her house, every single day.ย
Daphne went to her bedroom without waiting another second and didn't come out until a few hours later. Again, she'd lost a chain of thoughts and decided to skate to the park she was at yesterday. She still had a few hours to kill until the party.ย
The redhead took her skateboard and skated away until she reached the park, where she sat at the same spot as the day prior. Her pencil touched the raw pages of her book, stopping only when it reached the end of it and then restarting on the next page.
"You're here again."
Daphne looked up from her precious book and saw Steve, "You're here again, too."
"Yeah, well I was dropping off Nance and this place comes on route everyday. Oh, right, she's my girlfriend, by the way."
"And I still don't care."
She went back to writing, unaware that the boy was still there. Steve cleared his throat and sat down on the bench beside Daphne, making her look at the boy again, in question, "Okay, what is it, dude?" she said, fed up with Steve's behavior.
"I-I just wanna be friends with you."
Daphne sighed in annoyance, "I told you already, I don't want friends."
As she said that, Steve's face fell and Daphne ignored him, getting up collecting her things and leaving the park. "Man, why is it so easy for Emma and Chris to be friends with her and so hard for me...."ย
Now that Steve wasn't much of an asshole to the people in school, Tommy H. and Carol, his previous friends had ditched him, claiming he'd changed. Tommy was wagging his tail for the new kid and Carol just hung out with other girls like her. Steve didn't really have anyone other than Nancy as a real person in his life at the moment and for some reason it sucked. He loved Nancy, but she had her own friends and he needed real friends.
When he saw Daphne, he thought he could start afresh and make friends with her. She was new so she didn't know of how bad he was to other people before. But that wasn't going so well.
'What am I even doing?'ย
Meanwhile Daphne reached home and started getting ready. She wore her short black strapless sweetheart neckline, body hugging dress with a slight thigh slit, which was tight around all the right places, wore some torn up net stockings (she tore it up herself) and wore black see through gloves. A black leather jacket rested on the red-head's shoulders as she put on her jewelry. A black choker with silver letters spelling, 'DEVIL' was put on her neck and she wore multiple silver and black rings. Putting on black cross earrings and then wearing her black knee-length pumps, Daphne moved towards the mirror.
Smoky eyes decorated her eyelids and dark red lipstick clung onto her lips. She smiled, satisfied with her look as she got up and went outside the house, standing near Billy's car. Originally , Chris was meant to pick up Daphne and Emma, but when Neil Hargrove got a wind of the news that his children were going to a party, he'd instructed Billy to take her with him instead of going separately at the request of Susan.ย
Susan had firsthand seen how much the Hargrove twins hated each other and it pained her, she also saw Daphne isolating herself over the years. She saw her as a lonely kid. So she tried to help Billy and Daphne mend their relationship at any chance she could, but she was only worsening the situation. Daphne and Billy were not two people you'd want in the same room for over 5 minutes because one was bound to murder the other (not literally).
Due to Max being with the two teenagers most of the time, they had to keep it together till a certain point. If Max even remotely got hurt physically because of the two, their father would do things they couldn't even imagine. So like the many unsaid and silent agreements between the twins, one was to not lose their shit whenever Max was with them.
Without Max things were different. It was war between Daphne and Billy.
And there were no restraints.
