𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐆𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐏 𝐎𝐅 four—Tsuyu and Tsubame as victorious heroes, Kirishima and Sero as losing villains—headed back to the surveillance room to receive feedback from All Might, though there were still pieces of severed duct tape wrapped in the strands of Kirishima and Tsubame's hair that would need to be carefully teased out later. Despite the two boys being the defeated side, no hard feelings were swapped. "Man," sighed Kirishima, stretching his arms exasperatedly, "you guys totally made a great team! That just inspires me to train even harder!"
"Your Tape Quirk is so strong, Sero-kun," praised Tsubame with a grin, rubbing at her skin that had been exposed to the sticky material and had left behind light abrasions. "I totally underestimated it, huh?" Had it not been for Tsuyu during their first confrontation, she'd have been captured. They were trudging back up the stairs of the surveillance building.
Laughing, Sero nudged his large elbow into her shoulder. "No way, you tore through it like tissue paper."
Tsubame grinned as she raised her pawed hands, too drained and sore to be bothered deactivating her Quirk. "Only because of these," she announced, and the retractable claws pushed out from her fur, ligaments working to unsheathe them. The long, deadly tiger claws glinted in the crappy fluorescent light.
"Those are scary, Akatsuki-chan," observed Tsuyu with her thoughtful finger pressing by her mouth.
"Hmm... Akatsuki-chan?" Kirishima asked, frowning at her. "Are you injured?"
Frowning too, Tsubame glanced down at herself. "Not other than my hand," she answered with confused furrowed brows. "Are you?" Her eyes immediately scanned him for injuries, hoping she hadn't hurt him.
Kirishima shook his head. She smiled at that, but then he pointed towards her. "You're holding your arms out. They look stiff." Tsubame had hardly even noticed that she had indeed been doing just that.
"Oh," she winced, as her three classmates looked on curiously. "I pushed my Quirk further. Up past my elbow, see?" She pointed one clawed finger at where the fur crept just above her elbow. Though, as she did so, she needed to bend her other arm, and that had her wincing. "I'm not used to that." Suddenly wanting to change the subject and refusing to expose her own weaknesses, Tsubame turned to her teammate. "I was scared I got you with glass, Tsuyu-chan, are you alright?" checked Tsubame, searching for any signs of cuts on the shorter girl's skin. It had been a split-second decision to throw her out of the window.
Tsuyu shook her head, "I'm alright, Akatsuki-chan, thank you."
"Sorry for hitting you in the solar plexus," added Tsubame, glancing at Sero apologetically. She'd been punched there before in self-defence training and knew how painful it was. "I panicked."
He snorted out laugh. Rubbed at the point on his abdomen, which likely still hurt. A solar plexus blow was no joke. "It's fine, I'll get you next time."
She snickered as the four entered the surveillance room, much to the delight of their classmates who looked like they really wanted to speak with them. "Well done, Team H, Team J!" All Might's booming voice greeted them. Tsubame beamed. It had been nerve-wracking, going second, but she thought they'd done a good job. "Now it's time for your review!"
Tsubame and the other three stood in a line as All Might reviewed their training session. Her right hand needed to be bandaged from where she'd punched the glass, but apart from a few minor scrapes and bruises, both she and Tsuyu were unharmed. As were the opposing villain team. She did, however, need to fetch a bottle of vegetable oil from Lunch Rush's kitchen and use it to tease her and Kirishima's hair out of the tape their locks were still stuck to.
All Might went through the team members individually, both praising and criticising their actions. Commended Sero and Kirishima for their plan of defence, for the way they'd set up a trap around their weapon, and how they'd worked together to try to take the other team down. He praised Kirishima's strength but criticized his recklessness, let Sero know that he'd utilised his Quirk efficiently in the space he was given. Of course, the bad slip-up they'd had at the end involving Tsubame had been a mistake, but that was forgiven. Asui Tsuyu's versatility was praised, apparently her fight with Sero had been impressive, and she'd done a good job protecting Tsubame's ass—All Might hadn't put it like that—several times. Then, it was Tsubame's turn.
All Might's dark gaze turned to her, his grin wide and his hulking seven-foot figure intimidating. "Young Akatsuki, your quick thinking saved your teammate not only once, but three times. However, each time it put yourself in a compromised position. If this was not simply a training situation that you could use to your advantage—particularly the last circumstance, where you ended up entangled with Young Sero and Young Kirishima—those could have ended with you being captured or seriously injured. You should work on your self-preservation skills."
Wincing, Tsubame gave All Might a thumbs up with a sheepish smile, "Got it!"
"Alright, well done, you lot! Now, let's pick the next teams!" their teacher exclaimed, returning to the podium where the two boxes were positioned. His hands shifted around for a moment before he pulled out to spheres, this time reading 'G' and 'F'. "These are the pairs! Team G, you're the villains! Team F, you're the heroes!" Tsubame glanced around quizzically. That was... Hagakure Toru and Ojiro Mashirao versus Shouji Mezou and Todoroki Shoto. Tsubame's brow pinched curiously in the middle as she watched the dual-haired boy glance back solemnly, ready to head for the combat area. The scar on the left side of his face shone in the light. She couldn't tell what he was feeling at all. And, even if usually Tsubame wasn't the best at picking up minor expressions right off the bat, Todoroki Shoto was in an entirely different ballpark. There was just nothing there on his features—even his eyes just seemed solemn, dutiful. It was a stark comparison to Hagakure, whose boots indicated she was hopping around, Ojiro, who was rubbing the back of his neck nervously, and even Shouji, gaze filled with confidence. What was he thinking? "Come with me, Team F, Team G," announced All Might, and the two teams walked off to their battle area.
She was expecting a good fight—Ojiro's tail strength was unparalleled, Todoroki's ice was powerful, Hagakure could easily evade detection and wrap them up in capture tape, Shouji's Dupli-Arms Quirk meant that he could pick up pretty much any sound. Eagerness bounced in her veins as Hagakure and Ojiro set up. When the invisible girl pulled off her gloves and boots, going entirely unseen, Tsubame knew it was going to be interesting. The rest of the class seemed just as excited. So it was a surprise that the moment All Might spoke through his microphone that the heroes could begin, Todoroki spoke to Shouji and sent him to stand outside.
"What's their strategy...?" asked Uraraka softly, head cocked and short brown hair falling to the side as she wondered in confusion. It looked like Shouji had already scanned for the faux villains' whereabouts.
The aloof Todoroki Shoto's right hand began to shimmer with ice as he walked a few paces into the corridor, and he placed it against the adjacent wall. It spread, pale blue, and bloomed from beneath his right foot as well. Then, without any indication, the ice shot out and expanded, streaking up the floor and walls faster than Tsubame could blink, shards of it exploding out. His face, the entire time, was set and unexpressive, a blank canvas with his hair sprinkling with shards of ice. Before the count of seven, the whole five-story building was engulfed. An icicle.
"Holy crap," muttered Tsubame with wide eyes, not even caring about the rudeness of such words in the presence of her peers. The entire building shimmered with crystals of ice, every inch of the cameras just showing its shine across the walls and floors. A blue, shining wonderland. Ojiro and Hagakure were instantly completely stuck—they hadn't stood a single chance. Even as they struggled against the ice wrapped around their feet.
The rest of the class stood with mouths agape. The surveillance building was just next door to the one that had been frozen, so cold started seeping through the walls. Tsuyu shivered, eyes slipping closed, and Tsubame opened a still-fluffy tiger arm to let the shorter girl hug close. Did frogs hibernate?
"Todoroki-kun's so strong..." Uraraka murmured, hugging her arms around herself to keep warm, as the boy casually walked up the stories and entered the villains' chamber without batting an eye. He stood solemnly in the doorway, exchanging words with Hagakure and Ojiro that they couldn't hear. The only sign that Hagakure was there at all were a pair of footprints stuck deep in the ice. A small smirk—just the absolute slighted upward shift of his lips, barely detectable in any way at all—was lifting the edge of Todoroki's mouth.
All Might was rubbing his arms too, exhaling in the cold air. "He didn't cause any damage to his teammates or the nuclear weapon, and on top of that, he weakened the enemy." Tsubame's eyes kept going bigger, watching as Todoroki crossed the icy room with shards of the frozen floor clinking beneath his shoes. Such raw power... He really was the son of Endeavor. That unbridled, uncontainable strength of a Quirk. How was she ever supposed to compete against something like that?
Kaminari exclaimed with awe, "He's so powerful!"
Standing in front of the fake nuclear weapon, Todoroki's left hand reached out and touched it. "The hero team wins!" exclaimed All Might through the microphone, securing Todoroki and Shouji's victory. From Todoroki's left hand, steam poured out as the boy's eyes slid closed. And the ice covering the building began to melt. Water dripped down from the walls and ceiling as it did so, leaving a puddly mess behind. Soon, it was as if there had never been ice there at all.
"Heat too?" observed Tokoyami, bird beak snapping as he watched the screen with the rest of his classmates.
"Unbelievable!" Ashido Mina exclaimed with gritted teeth as Todoroki walked back out of the building silently, face still emotionless. Everyone in the class was thinking the same thing: how were they supposed to beat a Quirk with that raw power?
Kaminari leaned back, raising his eyebrows and pulling back his lips, "What's up with that Quirk?"
Shaking off the sleepiness, Tsuyu's eyes had cracked open. She pulled away from Tsubame's arm as the room heated back up, observing, "As expected of someone who got in through recommendations..."
"He got through recommendations?" asked Uraraka. "Like Yaoyorozu-san?" Tsuyu and some other members of the class nodded at that. Apparently Tsubame had missed that common knowledge. Uraraka looked discouraged at this information, and based on the look on a lot of other 1-A students faces, they all felt the same way. Already being left behind even before the first hurdle.
Tsubame's head cocked, looking at her taller, dark-haired peer. "Yaoyorozu-san, you were admitted based on recommendations too? You didn't have to do the Entrance Exam?" She was jealous.
Nodding, Yaoyorozu Momo placed a humble hand on her chest. "Yes. Me and Todoroki-san both."
Tsubame clicked her tongue and bit on the inside of her cheek. They really were going to get left behind, huh?
༉*ೃ༄
𝐀𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐓𝐇𝐄 combat training sessions had concluded, they'd changed back into their U.A. uniforms and headed back to the classroom. Hero Course classes ran an hour later than all the other courses at the school, so by the time they reached 1-A the sinking sun outside had turned the sky orange. It was blissfully peaceful. Something warm ignited within her as she stood at the window with Kirishima and Hagakure, observing the warm horizons. Birds winged overhead, cawing. "So normal after all that training..." murmured Hagakure happily, staring out.
Contently, Tsubame nodded, her face relaxed and delighted. "Ah, I'm so tired." Classes had technically finished, but Aizawa-sensei had let them know that Midoriya was still in Recovery Girl's nurse office, so most of the class had stuck around to wait. "But this is so nice." She pressed her palm against the window. It was soothingly warm.
"It's a good way to relax, huh?" sighed Kirishima, stretching his arms peacefully. A calm had overtaken the school, as they watched the other students drift out of the gates below. Some skipped together, holding hands or crammed together in friendship groups—the Second and Third Years who'd had time to grow comfortable and make strong bonds. Others, mostly First Years, walked alone or at a distance, still not sure where they fit on just their second day. Tsubame's face pressed to the hot glass as she watched everyone go about their own thing. "Oh, Midoriya's here!" Kirishima's exclamation made Tsubame turn, her eyes big as she watched the surprised green-haired boy walk into the classroom, looking stunned at being addressed so excitedly.
He gasped as Tsubame bounded over to him, cheering, "Midoriya-kun!", before he was surrounded by his classmates. "You did a great job!"
Kirishima squeezed in at her side, pushing her a little. "Man, I don't know what you were saying during the match, but you were fired up!" He pumped a fist in the air in front of him.
"I can't believe you fought evenly with Bakugou, who was first in the entrance exam!" That was Sero, crammed in behind Tsubame with his hand on her shoulder, the tall boy speaking over her head.
Ashido Mina jumped in with big bunny hops—excitement brimming to the surface as her hands were clutched into happy fists. She sprung back and forth between Kirishima and where Aoyama Yuga sat. "You did a good job dodging!"
Hugging Sero's arm around her because she often forgot about the concept of personal space, Tsubame, with a grin stretched wide, said, "Since you and the bastard gave it your all, we really had to step up our game! It would have been cool if you could have seen all of ours, too. Yaoyorozu-san was so resourceful—and Todoroki-san froze a whole building!" She threw her arms dramatically into the air, mimicking the motion of the exploding ice. Then she paused, hands falling back down to her side and Sero's arm still casually thrown around her since it seemed the boy didn't mind. "Are you feeling okay? You were knocked out, you know."
Interrupting Midoriya before he could reply, Aoyama leant around Ashido with a sparkle, "It was far from elegant, but—"
"You did a good job dodging!" cheered Ashido again, louder, jumping in front of Aoyama and cutting him from view.
"You showed Bakugou-san!" Tsubame shouted victoriously, grinning wickedly. The blond bastard had looked so shocked when Midoriya had won. Like he never in a million years would have expected it. "You were great!" Midoriya shrunk back at all the praise, mouth moving silently like a fish as he was unsure of what to say.
A sudden flash of purple leapt up in front of them. That short boy with the purple spheres on his head—Tsubame was yet to have a proper conversation with him. His height only came up to her hip. "What about me? I'm Mineta!" He was the one who'd been teamed up with Yaoyorozu Momo in the combat training. She'd had to do all the work.
Kirishima glanced down with confused eyes. "Where the heck did you pop out from?"
"You're weird!" Tsubame declared at him, nose upturned and arms crossed. "Why were you looking at Yaoyorozu-san like that anyway, huh?" She glared a little. Ashido Mina instantly joined her with a firm pouting scowl, lips puckered grumpily. With Sero's arm still tossed over Tsubame's shoulder and hanging casually across her front, he blinked too. Clearly he didn't get what the two girls were inferring.
Suddenly, the boy look affronted. "No, no, it was nothing!" Mineta vehemently denied, waving his hands.
"Don't be a weirdo, that's not very hero-like," chided Tsubame, her yellow eyes narrowed to glowing sunflower slits, more animal-like than ever. Mineta shrunk away, behind Midoriya, from her and Ashido's smouldering gaze.
Tsuyu squeezed between Tsubame and Ashido, glanced at Mineta and croaked, "Didn't you do terrible in the training, kero, kero?"
"I'm Aoyama Yuga—" Aoyama's voice came confidently from behind Ashido, though he was immediately spoken over once again by a mixture of Kirishima, Sero and Ashido. "I'm a man who never stops shining—" He kept talking even though he was being ignored.
"Tokoyami-kun!" Iida's loud exclamation behind the group crowding Midoriya had them all turning, Sero and Tsubame pivoting as one as he leant against her. The navy-haired boy was marching across the classroom chopping his hands before he waved his arms stiffly at the boy sitting on the table. Tokoyami was perched casually on one of the desks, chatting with Jirou and Ojiro, one knee drawn up to plant a foot on the surface. So cool, thought Tsubame happily—the bird-headed boy was always so calm and composed. "That desk is not a chair!" asserted Iida properly. "Get off immediately."
Jirou, confused, put a hand on her hip. "It's not that big a deal, is it?"
Coolly, Tokoyami red crow eyes slid shut. Meanwhile, Ojiro defended him, pointing awkwardly towards Iida, "What's with those hands, anyway...?"
A slouch pulled at Iida's shoulders. Tension laced his body. "You people..." He looked up seriously at them again, chopping his hands in that signature motion. "I cannot condone actions that disrespect the desks the great men and women who are our upperclassmen once used!"
"You're too loud," sighed Tokoyami.
The rest of the classroom stared at them blankly. "It's just called having fun, Iida-kun!" exclaimed Tsubame from her small group, waving a happy hand. She ducked out from under Sero's arm and pointed joyfully towards him. "You should try it! It's good!"
Iida turned on her, eyes shining behind his rectangular glasses. "I know how to have fun!"
Grinning wide, Tsubame snapped her sharp teeth and laughed, "Studying isn't fun!" A shot in the dark. His expression told her that she was indeed correct in her assumption that he was a study freak. Her index finger was still pointed at him.
The tall boy looked aghast as she smiled lopsidedly. "Yes it indeed is!" he argued, hand motions pulling out. A world where studying was considered an enjoyable pastime was the world in which Tsubame ceased to exist. The bane of her existence.
She shook her head rapidly and pumped her fists up and down in front of her excitedly. "You have to go to karaoke sometime!"
"Ooh! Ooh!" Ashido jumped forward beside Tsubame. "Chiba Prefecture has a really good karaoke bar!"
"Karaoke isn't productive!" argued Iida seriously, hand-chopping in front of their faces as the two girls closed in. "I refuse your offer!"
Grinning, Ashido shouted, "Refusal isn't allowed! It'll be for class bonding! That's productive, isn't it?" They were like sharks smelling blood in the water.
As Iida argued with them, glasses shining in the fluorescent classroom light, the classroom door slid open. In came Uraraka Ochaco and Kaminari Denki, each carrying a tall stack of blue textbooks, likely requested by Aizawa-sensei before he'd left. Probably for a class tomorrow. Kaminari was talking to the shorter girl behind him, smiling. He gestured a finger to himself confidently. "Hey, Uraraka, wanna grab a bite to eat sometime? What do you like?"
Cocking her head innocently, Uraraka thought and began to reply, "Mochi—" Then she caught sign of Midoriya and forgot about Kaminari entirely, eyes going wide as she ran over to him, leaving the blond behind. "Wait, Deku, she didn't heal your injuries?" Kaminari's face fell, eyes going lidded with disbelief and disappointment.
Hopping over, Tsubame snickered quietly at him, "You just got rejected."
Kaminari let out a groan of a sigh, dramatic, and shoved the textbooks he was holding into her arms. His lightning-bolt fringe flopped around. "I thought I was doing good."
Sympathetically, Tsubame patted him on the shoulder. She held the books in one hand. "Maybe Uraraka-san's just not for you." They both watched as she jumped over to Midoriya, her brown eyes big and worried, Midoriya looking bashful. Taking sympathy on him, Tsubame offered the blond next to her, "I'll go get boba or mochi with you sometime, as friends." She stood lightly on his foot in lieu of elbowing him, and then hopped ahead to speak with Midoriya again, Kaminari following behind with a sigh that sounded a bit more content. Tsubame deposited the stack of textbooks onto a desk. "Oh, how's your arm, Midoriya-kun?" she asked as she moved towards the short boy, index finger stretching to point at the limb wrapped in a blue sling. It was tucked against his chest. "I heard the nurse had a healing Quirk. Recovery Girl, right?"
"Ah," Midoriya vocalised, glancing down at his arm. "She does! But it requires my stamina, and I didn't have a lot left, so..."
Making a curious 'tch' sound with her mouth, she crept closer, eyes big and wondering. Her index finger pointed out and came to a stop about an inch away from the cast. "Does it hurt?" she asked inquisitively.
Kaminari Denki's voice behind her was lilted, like he was amused, and even without turning she could picture the way the edge of his mouth was tilting upwards in a bemused, entertained kind of way. "Did you just ask him if a broken bone hurt?" Which had Tsubame turning towards him with an indignant shout that started an entire new conversation. She didn't even notice when Midoriya slunk out of the room to try to find Bakugou Katsuki.
As her second day at U.A. High School came to a close, Tsubame headed home via the subway, then the public bus, a little less tired than the day before. Her arms burned, though, deep in their bones at her elbows. She'd ask her dad for some ice. Calming music filled her earphones on the rides, and then the walk, and she was surprisingly docile when she got home and slipped her shoes off in the genkan, entering her house. It had been a while since Tsubamemochi was so calm. And after talking avidly with Tomomi and Miki for a while, she threw herself down on her bed stacked high with plushies, sinking down in her uniform, and fell asleep with the light on for a solid hour.
Time ticked past her. But before she knew it, Tsubame awoke with what sounded like the dinging of notifications from her phone. Her eyes cracked open sleepily. No... that couldn't be right, no one was ever texting Tsubame. Brow frowning, her hand fumbled around amongst the different stuffed toys and across the duvet for the device, before she found it and peered at its screen.

Tsubame did the same. She hadn't really expected to get everyone's numbers or be put in a group chat so soon—it had taken her months to get added to any in her middle school, and even then she highly suspected they'd just made new ones without her considering how quick the activity had died down—, but it wasn't an unwelcome surprise. That meant she was making real friends, right? Who even cared if U.A. classes were hard as shit already and their teacher was some emo, maybe-homeless, sleeping-bag-loving weirdo? She had friends!

Tsubame made sure to save that number in her phone as 'bastard ((╬◣﹏◢))'. Even if he was her worst enemy in the current moment, it felt unnatural to leave his contact without a kaomoji or some form of emotional attachment at the end. So, he could have the most accurate one to his real self that she could find.

Tsubame would not be easily willing to admit that she stayed up until past one in the morning, grinning stupidly as she lay on her stomach with her legs hanging off her bed, staring at a split screen of five on her phone while she worked through English and Maths homework with her new friends—friends, they were friends; the thought warmed her. It took Kaminari Denki falling asleep on camera and starting to drool, and Kirishima chewing through his pen and leaking ink everywhere, for Ashido to snap her notebook shut and say, "Alright! That's enough for tonight! Your Alien Queen is declaring you all need to go to sleep!" Her pink cheeks were pushed up with her wide grin, hair that was an even darker shade of pink falling messily across her face.
Sero made a distressed, tired noise from where his face was in the blankets but no one else complained. Meanwhile, Kirishima was sitting cross legged in front of his phone camera eating a plastic packet of Yaokin cabbage and taro and corn puff balls, the snacks crunching as he threw them casually into his mouth. Tsubame, with big puppy-dog eyes, gasped, "Could you bring a packet of those to school tomorrow, Kirishima-kun?" She was so tired, but her mouth watered as she thought of the okonomiyaki-tasting snacks. Kirishima grinned as he crunched another puff ball between his shark teeth and nodded along, promising to do so. They logged off with goodbyes and grins, though Kaminari was already fast asleep, and hung up on one another.
So, yes, Tsubame's phone read the glaring numbers of '1:13AM' when she rolled over to go to sleep again, but after private time spent with four people who she thought she could now safely call her friends, it was enough.
