𝐓𝐇𝐄 pale, icteric gaze of the celestial being kisses her coffee brown skin. Her eyes glittered under its luminous gaze, a smile painted across her soft features. The light of the moon swathes downstate New York in its warm embrace.
The moon was awake, and so was Genesis.
Genesis was in love with the moon. Perhaps it was its beauty that captivated her so, or perhaps it was that at times in the night, where no other soul was awake, it was her only friend.
As long as Gene had known, she hadn't been able to sleep. Whether it was the fear that when others had fallen in deep slumber, something was going on that she was missing, or her life long battle with insomnia, she couldn't bring her to fall into the arms of Morpheus.
Her mind was awake and so was she. Often time she found herself using her camera to capture the heavenly presence of the moon herself, others she found herself jotting down her thoughts.
Her fears, her desires, her hopes, her dreams, her regrets, they were all perfectly curated into the form of a poem.
Every last one.
Her recent thoughts had been flooded with feelings of shame. She felt like such a cliche, and whilst cliches were something she adored this was not one was had wanted.
Unfortunately for her, and her twin brother, Genesis Sofoluwe was in love with her best friend, Miles Morales. It wasn't something she was hiding, she had tried and failed when her roommate, Melody Patel had discovered the book that held the contents of her mind.
Often times it felt like everyone in Visions knew except for him.
"Maybe, and this is just a thought, you tell him." Gideon had reasoned between long sips of his orange juice. Melody nodded in agreement, shoving a forkful of cut strawberries into her mouth. "What's the worst that could happen?"
"He could reject her thus ending their friendship indefinitely." Ganke spoke up, taking a swig of his water bottle. Gideon glared at him, shaking the black haired boy upside his head.
"Your wahala is too much, you just want problems the only time you speak is to scare Genie." He hissed, kissing his teeth. The boy raised his hands in surrender, "My bad, just stating facts."
Gene shook her head, "No Gideon, he's right. The end of our friendship would be devastating, I have to avoid it." "You aren't avoiding shit when your eyes practically turn into cartoon hearts whenever he smiles." Melody quipped, taking a long swig out of her soy milk container.
Genesis huffed, pushing a jet-black curl behind her ear. "They do no-"
"Morning guys." Miles slid into the seat next to Genesis, slamming his breakfast tray against the cafeteria table. Melody jumped at the sound, Gideon put a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"Jesus Miles, don't fucking do that." Melody spat, side eyeing the brown haired boy. He smiled at her sheepishly, "Sorry Mel."
"Don't sweat it Miles, Mel still ain't a morning person." Gideon patted the brown haired girls shoulder.
"I was up all night with Genesis studying for that stupid Physics test." Melody mumbled, shoving another strawberry into her mouth. "Actually I was studying, Gen was writing."
Miles swallowed the bite of his waffle, turning to face Genesis who was already staring at him. "What were you writing Genie?" "Probably those poems of hers again." Ganke spoke up once again, flipping the page of his comic book.
Miles smiled, "When are you going to let me read your poems Genie?" "Probably not anytime soon." Melody mumbled, Gideon pinched her arm. Unfortunately for Gene, Miles had heard her.
"Why's that?" "Um.. you know, privacy thing." Genesis stuttered out an excuse, shoving a forkful of pancake into her mouth, attempting to avoid the conversation. Miles pouted, "But you used to let me read them all the time." "Times have changed Miles," Genesis watched him frown, "Butttt, someday soon I'll let you read them. On the same day you let me go through your sketchbook." Genesis pointed at the black journal with her fork.
Miles grabbed the book, quickly shoving it in his backpack protectively, "Deal. C'mon Genie, lemme walk you to class." Miles grabbed his tray, standing up to put it away.
Genesis's mocha brown irises followed him intently, smiling. "Isn't he such a sweetheart?" She gushed, turning back to her friends who stared back at her, an unimpressed look painting their features.
"You're hopeless."
As the moon begins
To brighten at night,
Know I miss you,
When I look upright.
You're like a shining
Star — beautiful and bright,
But I have no wings to
Reach you, — my biggest plight.
