The sunrise came like the stars do for the sea.
It showed up unannounced, shining golden and rays of orange. It brought Noa the warmth she seek when she woke from her sleep, providing the three reassurance that she'd been okay before escaping up the ladder. Percy insisted she stay, but Noa swore she'd been okay as she climbed to the top of the truck, sitting on the side and looking out at the city of Las Vegas.
Percy joined her soon after.
"Hi!" he announced, it had been so early that not many cars had been out. All mainly parked at casinos, much too early to head home. They weren't driving all that fast, the wind wasn't loud. "Need some company?"
Noa extended her hand, when she latched onto his palm to help him across, her red hair changed to blonde curls like his. He didn't question it, but he saw the resemblance there. She helped him not fall, sitting down with her on the edge as their legs dangled off. "What are you doing up here?"
"I like watching the sunrise." she further explained, nodding to the golden and orange that danced away in the sky. "See that ray of golden? Right beneath the orange?"
"Yeah, I see it." he was amazed by the detail, never noticing the way it shined. "It's sparkling."
"That my mother." she further explained, Percy looked over at her before back to the sunset. "She puts her touch in the sky each morning...early riser."
"That's...pretty cool." he was looking for the right words, awkwardly clearing his throat. "Sorry about not being able to talk to her, like...for a long time. I know that sucks."
"I-" No began before she stopped, turning her head to look as him. "You do know."
Percy nodded his head. "Looks like we have more in common than we thought. Same dad, moms that kinda disappeared out of thin air but are still alive, big fans of blue cookies...really, I don't know how we didn't know we were related earlier on."
It made Noa laugh some, Percy grinned in satisfaction. She shrugged her shoulders. "There's also the whole ADHD and dyslexia thing."
"Can't forget that one." he nodded his head in agreement, shrugging into the silence. "Sorry about Clarisse. I know you said you were friends."
Clarisse being the lightening thief was the first thing Noa was told when she woke up and was the major reason she walked out here. She matched his shrug. "That's okay."
It wasn't but neither really knew what to say about it. Percy wasn't the most sincere person and Noa found comfort in silence rather than speech. "Why are you even friends with her?"
Noa gave him a strange look. "What?"
"I mean, she's really not a good person." he exclaimed with a weird look, wondering it the whole time and the biggest reason he was lacking sympathy right now. "She's rude to, like, everyone. I even saw her be rude to you...but you're friends with her?"
"You don't get it, Percy. You weren't at camp long." Noa kept her tone low, because she really did see where he was coming from. Clarisse was a mean girl, she had been mean to Noa on occasion just as he said. She sometimes wondered why she was her friends too. "Pretty much all of our world knew about my mother's affair with Ares. It gave the Aphrodite kids a bad name for a while, made us look like we were all the type to do something like that. I didn't know how to stand up for myself back then, and the jokes and comments just got worse and worse everyday. There was this one night, Clarisse was trying to talk to her dad but he hadn't answered her. I found her and she kinda blew up at me, clearly embarrassed and humiliated by how desperate she seemed to want to talk to him while he was ignoring her. Between what had been going on at camp and the way she was yelling at me, I just starting crying. Like, full on sobbing right infront of her. It was kinda funny."
A faint smile fell over her lips but Percy wasn't sure how to react. "She yelled at me some more but then stopped and asked me what the matter was. I ended up talking about my feelings for the first time and, I don't know, I guess she was so annoyed by me crying that she never let anyone mess with me after that. I helped her get ahold of her dad by calling my mom...we helped each other out in moments we didn't want anyone else to see. Clarisse isn't the best person but she's not the worse...she had my back when no one else did."
Percy glanced to the sunrise again before looking at his lips. "I would have had your back."
Noa smiled his way and bumped his shoulder, Percy did it back.
The pair went down the latter not long after to join Grover and Annabeth again. Noa didn't change her hair yet, keeping the blonde curls for now. The plan Grover made with the animals seemed relatively well as the four escaped to the sidewalk, zebras and ostriches roaming the streets of Las Vegas. "This seems dangerous."
"Oh. They'll be totally fine. I gave them a Satyr's blessing, so they'll be able to reach the wilderness safely." Grover promised with a smile across his face, Noa grinned at the look he had.
"I meant for the people." Percy corrected himself.
His face fell. "Oh....them. Well, i mean, I'm sure they'll...Yeah, I don't know. But the animals are all set."
"Who cares about the people?" Noa shrugged her shoulders. "They were gonna hurt those animals anyways. People like that deserve to lose their businesses."
"She's right." Grover nodded his head. "What those animals were saying...you have no idea."
"I once went into a human home and they had a deer head just hanging on the wall." Noa gapped at the three like she was deep in a gossip session. "Imagine if that deer was your child."
"Huh?" Annabeth gave her the strangest look. "What are you saying?"
"I'm not sure. This is why I avoid going blonde." she pushed the blonde locks behind her ears. "Makes my brain get all twisty."
"That's okay." Grover nodded his head. "Animal rights is a touchy subject, you're doing great with a twisty brain."
"Aw, Grover." Noa touched her heart. "That's so sweet of you to say."
"Okay, come on before the cops show up." Annabeth jumped in, knowing this could go on a while.
"So, how do we know which hotel is the Lotus?" Percy questioned her with frowned eyebrows, an ambulance heard in the background.
Her eyebrows shot up as she looked to her left. "I'm guessing the one with the giant lotus blossom on it."
They followed her gaze, Noa grinned as she used her video camera to film the outside of the hotel, walking in that direction quickly as Grover hurried behind her. Percy shook his head at Annabeth. "You were like two seconds ahead of me. Seriously."
"How do you think we're gonna get in there?" Noa stared up at the casino as they headed through the palm trees. Grover grabbed one quickly so she didn't have to duck beneath it. "I still have my age forward potions. They'll last a good few hours."
"Yeah, let's do that just incase." Annabeth nodded quickly. "You've used those before?"
"This isn't my first rodeo." Noa gave her a comical look. "Casinos are the best, just be ready to run when you're about to get all your money taken from you."
"You've been to a casino before?" Percy asked her. "When?"
"My mom took me to one." Noa smiled, taking a sip of the potion before passing it around. "Bad aftertaste but it'll keep us covered for about five hours."
By the time they made it to the doors, barely a minute or two later, they only appeared to be adults for all of five seconds before fading to their ages again. Annabeth gaped slightly. "Noa! I thought you said-"
"It usually always last a few hours." she promised quickly and looked at the bottle. "Maybe it expired?"
"Guys, I think we're okay." Grover spoke up, pointing to the amount of people that appeared to be their age all around. "It's an arcade too...parents probably stay in the hotel and bring their kids here too."
"This place is beautiful." Noa gaped at the entire place, not worried about their appearance anymore as she videod the squares on the windows. "Look at the neon window stains. Annabeth, hold this."
Annabeth took her camera from her quickly as Noa ran to the wall. Percy looked around. "I know we're supposed to be saving the world, but would it be unprofessional if we just hung out here for a bit?"
"We find Hermes." Annabeth gave him a serious look in the process of taking pictures of Noa, she hit a different pose every single time infront of the neon windows. "We get him to hook us up with a ride to Los Angeles and a plan to get into the Underworld and we are out of here ten seconds later."
"I was kidding." he defended himself as he gave Noa a look of disbelief. "Are you done?"
She gave him an offended one back as she dropped her arms from her recent pose. "Well, I am now. If you wanted to model too you should have just said that."
"When did-" he began.
"Wait, hang on." Grover held an arm out to silence him. "Your mom told you all the stories. Did she read you the Odyssey?"
"The graphic novel." he tilted his head in response. Annabeth looked at him like he was dumb. "It counts."
"Odysseus lands on a beach. There's these guys who've forgotten where they came from, forgot everything that was important to them, and they got that way because they ate-" Grover began to further explained the legend.
"The lotus flower." Percy cut him off, recalling his graphic novel.
"If we go in there and forget everything, that would be bad on a number of levels." Noa sometimes wondered how bad of a headache Grover had from how stressed out he always was. It was like he was living in his bubble of anxiety and the three of them were adding more and more bubbles to make it bigger and bigger.
"But, if Hermes is in there, though, then what choice do we have?" Percy defended the reason they'd been here in the first place. He glanced at Annabeth. "What do you think, Wise Girl?"
She put her full attention onto Grover. "Just don't eat anything."
The two walked away as Noa tossed her hands up. "Do I not get a vote?"
"Like you'd say no and miss an opportunity to video this entire place." Annabeth gave her a knowing look. "You know how many kids at camp would love to see a live action of a casino? That magazine article, especially if you can find a way to project the film again, would alter game nights."
"You're so smart." Noa held her camera up quickly. "How did that not cross my mind? You should be my media girl."
"Ask me again when we're home." she shrugged her off.
"This place is a lot bigger than it looked from the outside." Grover looked around in awe, his hand holding onto Noa's jacket so neither of them would get lost. "He could be anywhere."
"Let's split up." Annabeth spoke up.
Percy rose an eyebrow. "I thought we didn't do that anymore. Also, you guys have seen him before but I haven't. So i'm not gonna be much help alone."
Annabeth looked at Grover. "You and Noa go check that side of the floor. I'll take Percy this way. One way or another we meet back in the lobby in twenty minutes."
"What do I say to him if I find him?" Grover winced, already over thinking it.
"Nothing." Annabeth almost snapped at him. "Meet here and you'll take me to him"
Grover hesitated, Noa shut her camera as he nodded. "Yeah. Of course."
"Come on." Noa grabbed his wrist to pull him with her, escaping the pair as they walked through the crowd. "I think you're pretty okay."
Grover gave her a strange look, Noa nodded her head. "If you needed to talk to Hermes, I'd trust you enough to do it. I think you're pretty okay enough to handle something like that."
Grover smiled as he looked forward too. "You think so?"
"Yeah, I think so." she agreed with a nod of her head, close by his side. "I mean, why wouldn't I?"
"What?" Grover was entirely confused as he stopped waking, turning to stand right infront of her. "Noa, I'm really confused. Should I talk to Hermes?"
"No. I just-" she huffed, tossing her hands slightly. "I mean that if I was in Annabeths place, I would tell you to just talk to him instead of bringing him to me because I trust that you'd do it right. I'm trying to compliment you, tell you that you're-"
She wasn't able to finish her sentence before her entire body collapsed forward, Grover caught her quickly. "Noa?!"
She was dead still for a moment in his arms. He pulled her back. "Noa?!"
She opened her eyes quickly in an alarming way. He gave her a worried look and helped her stand on her own. "What just happened?"
"I don't know, it felt like my body just gave out on me." she held her heart, Grover touched her forehead.
"You're freezing." he shook his head, grasping her hand. "Come on, we can find a spare room. You need to lay down, Percy and Annabeth can find Hermes."
"I think I'm okay, maybe just dehydrate." she attempted to compromise as he pulled her through the crowd. "This place is huge, like you said. They may not find him on their own."
"You just passed out on me. I'm not dragging you through a casino. Maybe all the lights are making your brain have a small seizure." he insisted, going to the lobby as the music faded to nothing. "We still have the money from Ares, we can afford a room for you to rest in for at least half an hour."
They approached the front desk, the man behind it smiled. "Come for a hotel pass?"
"We can pay." Grover promised.
"Don't worry, you're already here." he passed them both a card. "Games, food, drinks...it's all paid for on this card."
"A room?" Grover asked with a hopeful eye.
"You know it." neither of them were from the human world, they had no clue that wasn't normal. He turned to get a door key for them. "Second floor, room 34."
"Thank you." Noa smiled to him as her and Grover headed to the elevator. "I thought humans were bad...they don't seem that bad."
"That was a really nice one." he nodded in agreement. "I guess all the other things has clouds the decent ones."
The elevator shut closed, leaving the two in there. Grover glanced over at her. "I think you're pretty okay, too."
Noa looked over at him, the golden glow of her veins came back for a second. Grover nodded. "Why do you do that?"
"Do what?" she hummed.
"The golden thing. It's happened a few times now." he explained to her. "Your veins turns this golden shade for a second or two."
"Really?" Noa blinked a few times. "I'm not sure, I didn't know I was doing it."
The elevator opened up for them, leading them into the hallway and finding their room quickly. Grover walked in first as Noa headed for the bed, kicking her shoes off. "You stay there for as long as you can, I'll come get you when I meet up with Percy and Annabeth."
"You're not staying?" Noa gave her a look from beneath the blankets, sinking into the bed.
"I'll be back, I just don't want them to panic if they can't find us." he walked over and pulled the blankets up higher on her before turning the lamp off. "Be back when you wake up."
He leaned down and kissed her on the forehead, Noa smiled as he limped away to the door. She rolled over in the bed and curled up into the pillows, the horrible feeling hitting her again as her body went completely limp. When she opened her eyes again, she sat up in fear and gasped for air. Her eyes looked around the room quickly and kicked the blankets off her. "Hello?"
She didn't have a single clue where she was.
Noa ran to the door, pulling on it before she realized it had been locked. With a twist to the lock, she sprinted into the hallway where a group of girls were headed to the elevator. The platinum blonde stared at her in shock. "Woahhhh, you okay girl?"
"I'm-" Noa held her chest as the panic still formed. "I don't know where I am."
"Aw, this your first time getting plastered?" the dark haired brunette laughed slightly. "Don't worry, babe. We're at the casino! You just blacked out, happens to all of us."
"Aren't you a little young to be drinking?" one of the other girls asked.
"I'm a thousand." Noa shook her head at her.
"Yeah you are!" the blonde cheered as she grabbed her arm and pulled her into the elevator with them. "We're all a thousand! We'll never die!"
All the girls in the elevator cheered loudly, Noa laughed the fear off. Like she said...she'd been to casinos before, her mom likely brought her to the room and was downstairs flirting with men at the bar.
•
Noa found out she was an absolute killer at poker.
She had stacks of cash on her in no time, her hair was red again and the little heart on her face was back. She'd lost track of how long she was here, time moving completely different for her as she crowded at the table. A man placed his cards on that table, a smile rested on his face. "All in."
Noa gave him a worried look. He laughed some. "Don't worry, sweetheart. You beat all the other women here."
"Oh." Noa frowned as she looked up as him again, the frown shifted to a smile. "All the men too, apparently."
She laid her cards down, five A's laid out infront of him.
The table cheered for her as Noa laughed, leaning forward to pull all the chips her way. "Round two...sweetheart?"
He stormed off quickly, mumbling something under his breath. Noa laughed with the group as she looked over. "Hey, barkeep! Round of shirley temples on me!"
The table cheered again, some shaking her in joy. Noa laughed with them before she heard the beat of the music, her body freezing as it ran through her veins.
Mum-mum-mum-mah.
"Oh, Hades yes." she got up quickly and ran to the dance floor. "Girls, come on!"
"What about our shirley temples?" they called, a few running with her to the crowd that danced away on the neon squares beneath them.
Noa's shoulder moved to the dance of the music, her head bobbed some but managed to stay slightly on key. She lost sight of most of the girls. Can't read my poker face. She waved her head around some, dancing away as if she knew how. Her arms above her head, far from a good dancer but staying on beat for the most part and singing along just slightly. Noa spun in a circle in joy, dancing away as she gradually ventured to the right some.
Her body collided with someone, stumbling slightly as they caught her. She laughed and found her balance. "Woahhhh, I'm sorry. Wasn't watching were I was dancing."
"Oh, that's okay." he laughed slightly, looking at her with wide eyes. He held her waist still, not letting go because she hadn't removed her hands from his shoulders. "I'm glad you're okay. I liked your dance."
"Really?" she grinned, glancing at the little horns on his head. She pulled his neck some so he would duck his head. "I like your horns...they're cute!"
"Thank you, I haven't gotten my actual ones yet!" he called back over the music, eying her hair. "I like your hair. It's very red."
"I know right?" she laughed, raising her eyebrows at him. "You're really cute!"
"You think so?" he laughed nervously, a bashful look across his face as he stared at the girl that made him stop his search for Augustus, and he was certain nothing would have stopped that. "You-"
He was cut off by her leaning in, hands on his neck, and pressing her lips onto his. His eyes widned in shock but kissed her back for just a second, spending too much time sitting there in shock. Noa smiled at him when she pulled away, staring at his face as a bashful smile crept to him. "I'm gonna go dance some more but I hope I see you again soon! Come back here when you hear the song again!"
And just like that, she was gone, as was he in search of Augustas as the lotus flowers within the air slowly crept into their brain, causing them to forget what just happened.
•
Percy sighed in relief when he got sight of Noa, him and Annabeth on a fast search for her and Grover after realizing what the hotel was doing to them. She was laid on a poker table, her head leaning off the side with many empty glasses around her. They approached quickly as she mumbled under her breath. "P-p-p-poker face."
"Noa!" Percy hurried to her. "Thank God. We've been looking all over?"
"New players?" she sat up, holding her head in pain a she stilled for a moment. "Oh....no. No. No, maybe later."
"What's the matter with her?" Annabeth gave a weird look.
Percy grabbed one of the glasses that were spread around her and took a sniff of it. It smelt just like Gabe did on a friday night and even worse on his poker game nights. "She's completely wasted. This is insane. She doesn't even look twenty-one!"
"Okay, let's just get her out of here." Annabeth spoke up as her and Percy helped her off the poker table. Percy held her up with his arm as Annabeth stood before her. "Noa, I know you're tired but do you know where Grover is? Have you seen him?"
Noa gave her an odd look. "What's Grover?"
"Okay, we need to get out of here right now." Percy spoke up quickly. "You know it's bad if Noa doesn't sven know who Grover is."
"Grover is a who?" Noa rose her eyebrows. "How do I know him? Where are we going?"
"To find him." Percy further explained.
"But, the sun!" Noa pulled against him. "I can't leave the sun! It's speaking to me! The sun needs me!"
"The sun?" Percy looked oddly. "What's she talking about?"
"Hey." Annabeth grabbed ahold of her quickly. "We'll take you to the sun. Just come with us."
"The sun is so beautiful, it makes me golden." she gushed with worried eyes. "I need to talk to the sun."
"Come on, then." she encouraged. "We have to find him quickly."
Percy helped Noa walk a straight line as they followed the faint directions Augustus gave them. It wasn't long till they found the virtual reality, the back of Grover's head coming in full view. "Grover? Grover."
Percy took the helmet off, Grover gave an offended look. "I was so close."
"I know, I hate when someone does that to me." Percy shook his head.
Noa gasped at the yellow he wore. "The sun! He's here!"
Noa jumped up onto the podium and wrapped his arms around him. Grover gave an odd look as Noa clung to him as her veins glowed golden a few seconds longer than usual. Annabeth and Percy shared a look as he spoke up. "I can't believe I'm the one saying this, but it's really time to go. All of us."
"Of course." Grover confirmed. "Where are we going?"
Percy looked at him oddly. "You don't know who we are, do you?"
"Yeah." he looked at Noa weirdly as she held onto him. "No, I don't. Have we met? Why am I the sun?"
"I do not choose the sun, you just are the sun." Noa gushed with admiration on her face. "Aren't you?"
"He's the sun." Annabeth spoke up quickly to keep it going. "You better not losing the sun again, right?"
Noa nodded quickly. Percy gave Grover a crazy look. "I'm Percy, that's Annabeth and the girl calling you the sun is Noa."
"No." Noa gave him an offended look. "I'm the stars! The stars are made to love the sun despite never seeing it, even though it's always right around the corner."
"Oh, I love the stars." Grover smiled to her. "I don't see many of them anymore, the air is so polluted from humans. How did you become a star?"
"We're your best friends." Percy cut in.
Grover's eyes widened in excitement. "Really?"
Percy huffed as he grabbed his arm. "Grover, we're on a quest. We can't do this without you. We're short on time and we gotta go. Right now. With the both of you."
"A quest?" he unzipped his vest quickly. "That sounds amazing! But, is it dangerous? It's not a deal-breaker. I'm just curious. Also, I'm sorry, what was your name again?"
"Hurry it up!" Annabeth ignored him, encouraging the pair to hurry as they pulled them along. Noa was still wobbly as Percy still lead her to the parking garage.
"The sun is so beautiful." she spoke to him as they trailed back some, Annabeth and Grover walking a few feet before them. "Thank you for bringing me to him."
"What makes him the sun?" Percy gave an odd look.
"I don't know. I don't get to pick who the sun is." she explained. "We all glow golden, like the sunset part my mother made, when the sun is near. She placed it on all of her kids to represent the thing she made before she had any of us, we all have different suns."
"And you're the stars?" he asked her oddly. "Not Noa?"
"I'm the stars. All of them." she nodded her head. "Representing an entire galaxy of beauty that you can't see without darkness, only some genuinely taking the time to take their eyes off other things and appreciate the beauty and work they put into trying to be something. A poem from my mother."
"Woah." Percy blinked. "That's deep. Use your star powers and tell me what kind of car the god of travelers has?"
"Guys, I gotta say, so far, this quest is really exciting." Grover gushed as Percy and Noa caught up. "Really hoping we find that car."
"Finding the car isn't the quest." annabeth explained with a faint humor in her tone.
"There's more?" he gaped at her.
"Jeez." Percy exhaled. "We'll explain it to you on the way. We're in a bit of a hurry."
"I don't feel very good right now." Noa winced as she stopped walking. "I need to lay down."
"N-we can't lay down now. You can lay down in the car." Percy looked back as he grabbed her arm, seeing the queasy look on her face. "I promise, we have to keep going."
Noa frowned as she stood still, the horrible feeling that was on its way coming up over taking her entire body as she held her stomach. Grover frowned as he walked to her. "Aw, it's okay, Stars. We're almost to the first quest mark."
He wrapped his arm around her with a soft smile. Percy looked to them again. "We gotta get going, guys. Short on time."
"We're late?" Grover asked as he continued to walk, Noa beneath his arm.
"Very, very late." Percy nodded his head quickly.
"Are we late because of me?" he gave a worried look, the three stopped walking.
Percy stared at him as he touched his shoulder. "It's okay. We're gonna be okay. Although, I hope that game you were playing was amazing."
"I was searching for Pan." he gushed.
"Sounds great." Percy matched his soft smile.
"No. I mean, like I actually felt I was about to find him." he spoke confidently. "That-that I'd be the first. That I'd help save the natural world. It just felt so real."
Noa hunched over quickly and puked all over the parking garage floor. They both cringed and backed up. Percy sighed. "Nice way to ruin the moment, sis."
"Oh, you poor thing." Grover rubbed her back. "I-"
"I feel much better." Noa stood up with an exhale, rubbing her mouth. "I'm never drinking shirley temples again."
"I don't think that was all shirley temples." Percy shook his head confidently.
"Guys!" Annabeth spoke up, standing before a cab as the doors unlocked.
"Hermes drives a cab?" the blonde questioned in shock.
"And left us a note." she held up the paper.
"How do we know that's for us?" he nodded to it. To the dumb kids. "Nice."
"Should've known the god of thieves noticed his pocket getting picked." she shook her head and tore the note open. "Back door to the Undwrworld, magic word, map in the glove box. And he says we'll become travelers once we're on the road. And then the car will take us wherever we wish to go."
"So, one of us just has to drive it out of the garage." Percy nodded, seemed simple enough. "Noa?"
"She can't drive. She just puked up probably only one third of what she actually drank." Annabeth scolded him then looked to the boy by her side. "Grover?"
"Oh, I'm still not 100% sure what we're doing here, which seems disqualifying." he blinked, looking back and forth.
"Yeah." Percy exhaled. "Yeah, sure, I mean...I killed the Minotaur on my first try, right? How hard can this be?"
He hit the post the second he started the car. Noa found a water bottle and was in the process of drinking it, the hit choking her as she coughed and sprayed water all over him and Annabeth. "My fault. That was me. How do you make it go backwards?"
He put it in reverse, hitting the other post. Grover and Noa swung around in the back seat. "You're doing great!"
"Maybe try aiming for the middle." Annabeth attempted to be helpful.
"Look, you're welcome to give this a try." he said back, hitting the gas and the breaks over and over again and almost hitting another car. "That guy didn't even slow down."
"Honk at him." Noa encouraged as Percy slammed on the horn.
"Keep going, to the streets." Annabeth encouraged as Percy inched forward more and more in the car, hitting the breaks and gas over and over. They came to a small opening that was narrow, far from something he could do. "It's okay. You got this."
Percy aimed for the track as he eased into the lines, smiling to Annabeth as she smiled back before he ran into the side of the tunnel. Noa winced at the sound it made, smacking into Grover as he yanked the wheel and crashed through the gate that welcomed them onto the road.
