LXXVIII. In Shadows, a Titan's Heart Beats
It didn't take long before Y/N found an island—a small, secluded patch of land rising from the endless expanse of the ocean. It wasn't far from New York, not really, but it was far enough that she hoped no one would find her. Or, if they did, that they would leave her in peace. The island was quiet, untouched by the chaos of the city, and for the first time in what felt like an eternity, she allowed herself to breathe.
With a heavy sigh, she unleashed a controlled burst of her fiery breath, carving out a shallow crater in the earth. The ground smoldered briefly before cooling, leaving a smooth, bowl-like depression. She curled her massive body into it, her scales glinting faintly under the fading light of the sun. Her tail coiled around her, the tip resting gently over her snout as she settled in. Her glowing eyes, now dimmed to a soft amber, watched the sky as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the clouds in hues of orange and purple. The moon rose soon after, its silver light spilling over the island and the surrounding waves.
The rhythmic sound of the ocean lapping against the shore lulled her into a rare sense of calm. Her thoughts drifted to the Web Warriors, to Spider-Man, and to the life she had left behind. Stay safe, my darling warriors, she thought, her heart heavy with a mix of affection and sorrow. May the gods and goddesses be with you.
The words were a silent prayer, carried on the wind across the miles that separated her from the city she once called home. She didn't know if they could hear her, if they could feel the weight of her gratitude and her regret. But in that moment, it was enough to send the thought out into the universe, a fragile hope that they would be protected, even if she could no longer be there to fight beside them.
As the stars began to dot the night sky, Y/N's eyes grew heavy. The tension in her massive frame eased, and her breathing slowed, each exhale a faint puff of smoke that dissipated into the cool night air. The island was silent, save for the gentle crash of waves and the distant cry of a seabird. And there, under the watchful gaze of the moon, she finally let go, slipping into a deep, dreamless sleep.
For now, the world would have to wait. Kaijira had found her sanctuary, and in the quiet of the night, she allowed herself to rest.
SCENEBREAK
Kaijira woke up to the shriek of something being killed, her eyes slowly opening. She dug her claws into the sand. What the hell is it now?
Y/N rose from the crater, her massive form shaking off layers of sand that cascaded down her scales like a waterfall. Her dorsal plates pulsed faintly, glowing with a soft, otherworldly light that mirrored the rhythm of her heartbeat. The ground trembled beneath her as she moved, her talons sinking into the earth with each deliberate step. She made her way toward the beach, her sharp eyes catching the scene unfolding near the water's edge.
A young leopard, small and trembling, was cornered by two large, aggressive baboons. Their taunts echoed across the shore, cruel and mocking. "Hah, you're without your mom, stupid little kitten," one of the baboons sneered, baring its teeth as it loomed over the cub. The leopard crouched low, its ears flattened against its head, too frightened to fight back.
Neither of the baboons noticed Kaijira approaching—not until it was too late. With a low, rumbling growl, she closed the distance between them in a few strides. Her hot, smoky breath billowed out, engulfing one of the baboons in a suffocating cloud. The creature choked, its eyes widening in terror as it stumbled back. The other baboon barely had time to react before Kaijira's massive jaws snapped down, ending its life with a single, decisive bite. Its body crumpled to the ground, lifeless and still.
The surviving baboon, now trembling and gasping for air, stared up at the towering titan before it. Kaijira's glowing eyes bore into it, her voice a thunderous command. "Get off the beach," she snarled, her words laced with a menace that sent the baboon scrambling. It turned and fled, its panicked cries fading into the distance as it disappeared into the treeline.
Kaijira watched it go, her chest rising and falling with slow, measured breaths. Then, she turned her attention to the young leopard, who was still crouched in the sand, wide-eyed and shaking. Her expression softened, the fierce glow in her eyes dimming as she lowered her head to the cub's level.
"Are you okay, little one?" she asked, her voice surprisingly gentle despite its deep, resonant tone.
The cub blinked up at her, its fear slowly giving way to awe. "Y-yes, thank you... I'm fine," it stammered, its voice small but steady. It took a tentative step forward, its tail flicking nervously. "You... you saved me."
Kaijira nodded, her massive form casting a protective shadow over the cub. "You shouldn't have to face bullies like that alone," she said. "Where is your mother?"
The cub's ears drooped, and it looked down at the sand. "She... she didn't come back from the hunt. I don't know where she is."
A pang of sympathy flickered in Kaijira's chest. She knew what it was like to feel abandoned, to be left alone in a world that could be cruel and unforgiving. "Come," she said after a moment, her voice warm but firm. "Stay with me for now. I'll keep you safe."
The cub hesitated, then nodded, its small body pressing close to Kaijira's massive talons as she led it away from the beach. The sun dipped lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the island, but for the first time in a long while, Kaijira felt a flicker of purpose. She wasn't just a monster, a force of destruction. Here, in this quiet corner of the world, she could be something more.
And for now, that was enough.
