Chapter 35
We reached a narrow alleyway, a hushed enclave in the city where the clamor of the streets faded into an almost eerie silence. The only occupant was a curious black-and-white tomcat, who blinked at me with wide eyes before letting out a plaintive meow. I smiled, but suddenly Venom hissed, a low guttural sound that sliced through the calm air. The kitten shivered in terror and darted away, disappearing into the shadows.
"What was that for?" Spider-Man whined, half-amused and half-annoyed as he watched the cat vanish. I chuckled involuntarily, the sound warm and light amidst the tension. "I don't know," I replied, not entirely sure if Peter heard me. But Venom answered in his deep, resonant voice, "We don't know." The mischievous tone made me stifle a laugh.
The atmosphere shifted abruptly as the space around us began to stir, a palpable tension coiling in the air. Without warning, a cloaked figure emerged from the darkness, the edges of his cloak fluttering like shadows come to life. His eyes glowed with an ominous light, and instinctively, Spider-Man took a step backward, his playful demeanor evaporating into caution.
"Heh, uh, you must be Cloak," Peter said, his voice faltering slightly. "I'm Spider-Man, and this is Shadow and Iron Fist. We... uh, we were looking for you and your—" He hesitated, cutting himself off as Cloak stepped back and opened his cloak wide. The fabric unfurled like a dark gateway, and what emerged was startling—a line of stone-like figures, seemingly dormant but emanating a chilling energy.
Unease tightened in my stomach. Venom's previous warnings about a dark lord and his mindless thralls surged back to me, and I frowned at the shocking sight. Without warning, I felt a sharp sting as Venom's claws sliced through my finger, the pain sharp yet strangely grounding. I instinctively slammed one of the stones into another object nearby, generating a muffled thud that echoed through the alley like a drumbeat.
Suddenly, Spider-Man and Iron Fist jumped into action, launching themselves toward the stone figures. The chaos erupted into a flurry of movement as light shards began to fill the air, dazzling and blinding. I ducked instinctively, barely avoiding being struck in the head by a beam of radiant disruption.
Amid the tumult, a girl with an ethereal presence descended from a rooftop, her long, blonde hair stark against the night sky. She held a radiant beam of light—her eyes fierce as she leveled it at Spider-Man's face. "Back off," she snarked, asserting her space.
Just then, Cloak made a sudden move, and I realized with a sinking heart that he had taken Danny. The realization crashed over me like a wave, and I chided myself for being so distracted. But then Venom's voice resonated within me, calm and grounding. "You're not stupid, Y/N. Never think that."
I redirected my focus to the girl, the tension in my body coiling tightly as I shot a protective glare her way. "Hey, back off yourself," I snarled, baring my teeth toward her in an intimidating display. Spider-Man raised a hand, his smile infectious despite the chaos. "Whoa, whoa, no need to get aggressive, Shadow," he implored. "I'll handle this," he added cheerily. "Hey, no need to point that thing at me," he joked, nudging the lightsaber-like beam of light away playfully. "So, you must be Dagger, right?"
The figure, still cloaked in mystique, took a step forward and asked, "How do you know about me?"
I could sense the tension simmering beneath the surface, so I stepped to the side and placed a hand on Dagger's shoulder, hoping to diffuse the situation. "We got information, that's all. We were looking for you, but then you turned on us and took our friend," I explained dismissively. "Nothing big."
Dagger sighed deeply, her face drawn with concern. "I don't know why he's acting like this," she murmured. "He used to be a kind guy, but lately, he's been kidnapping mystical types—Doctor Strange, a white tiger, Gorilla, and your friend." She touched her head, frustration etched across her brow. "I just want him back."
Empathy washed over me like a cold wave, and I felt a stab of sympathy in my chest. "Well, we'll help you," I said firmly. Spider-Man nodded beside me, his expression serious. "Yeah, but first, we need to go to Doctor Strange; he can help us."
Dagger's expression turned grim. "Didn't you hear what I said? He's already been taken."
Spider-Man's demeanor shifted, his determination unwavering. "Yeah, so that's where we'll find him, right?"
Dagger just shook her head, and for a brief moment, hope faltered in the encroaching darkness. With an unspoken agreement, we swung off into the night, propelled by the weight of our mission—a quest that entwined our fates and pushed us closer to an enigmatic force lurking within the shadows. In the midst of chaos and uncertainty, one thing was clear: we would confront this darkness head-on, together.
SCENEBREAK
We soon located Dr. Strange's estate, its towering spires and intricate architecture looming ominously against the dimming sky. The faint glow of mystical symbols hung in the air, marking the presence of powerful forces, but there was something wrong, something off about the air around us. As we drew closer, a sharp, insistent pain bloomed behind my eyes. My head throbbed relentlessly, and I staggered for a moment, clutching my temple.
Spider-Man, ever the vigilant companion, shot me a concerned glance, his voice laced with worry. "Are you alright?" he asked, his eyes narrowing beneath the mask.
I managed a tight, fleeting smile, shaking my head. "Yes, just a headache," I lied, but my breath hitched, and I could feel the gnawing sensation in the depths of my skull.
Venom's voice slithered through the cracks of my mind, dark and unsettling, like a whisper in the dark. "There's something deeply unsettling happening; it feels like the fabric of reality is tearing apart. Something... wrong. Be cautious."
The words resonated with an eerie truth, and I couldn't shake the feeling that everything was on the brink of collapse. My muscles tensed, and without further hesitation, I leaped from the ledge, landing with the grace of a predator. The cold stone beneath my feet seemed to pulse with an energy that sent a chill crawling down my spine.
I strode forward and pushed open the large, ornate door, my heart pounding in anticipation. The room beyond was cloaked in an unnatural, fiery glow, and as I stepped in, I found myself face to face with an entity of pure dread. Towering before me was Dormammu, his enormous form radiating a terrifying aura. His head blazed like a sun, flames flickering and dancing around his features as his twisted smile stretched across his grotesque face. The very air around him seemed to bend under the weight of his presence.
"You are a symbiote, aren't you?" Dormammu sneered, his voice booming, shaking the very foundation of the room.
In that instant, I understood. I knew exactly what had to be done. The pain in my head, the warping of reality, the destruction of everything I held dear—it all led to this. It was time to confront the force that threatened everything, no matter the cost.
