011 Perfect
011 !! PERFECT
Georgie stands bored behind the counter, a drowsy exhaustion radiating off her as the previous night mostly consisted of tossing and turning until the light chirping of the birds could be heard throughout the island and the Maybank twin was sure that she was fucked.
I mean, who doesn't love getting barely three hours of sleep before the ferocious and excessively annoying beams of the sun decide to come and play about?
And that is how she got to where she is now.
Leaning against the partially marble covered counter of The Wreck with her chin in her hands and eyes slowly drooping due to the lack of action in the restaurant.
A few moments of utter and complete quiet passes and just when she's sure that no one will ever dare to wake her from her awkward slumber, the bell beside her rings.
She startles, straightening up in an instant and the moment her gaze falls on the two boys in front of her, she scowls.
"What do you want?", she mumbles roughly not bothering to give notice to the blue shirt clad brunet giving her an eyebrow raise.
"Food, Maybank", Topper huffs shuffling over to sit in one of the chairs.
Rafe follows suit, still keeping his curious eyes on Georgie who refuses to look at his backward hat and amused expression which is enough for making her feel perfectly small and irrelevant while also making her wonder the ultimate question everyone in Kildare County has on their minds.
How is Rafe Cameron so hot?
Shaking her head, she dismisses any thoughts about the Cameron boy's 'perfection' and glares at Topper.
"Sure you're not here to kill all Pogues?".
Topper frowns, "John B started the fight, Georgie".
"But he didn't try to kill you", she shrugs.
Topper rolls his eyes and plucks out a menu from the stand turning his attention to the range of different foods and drinks served there.
Rafe, meanwhile, just cannot stop looking at Georgie, who occasionally throws him a side glance fighting the urge to touch that obnoxiously perfect statue chisel that he calls a face.
She has absolutely no idea why her body's reacting the way it is.
Ever since, Rafe came in on her night shift she's been having . . . . mixed feelings about him.
He was remotely decent that night and that, to Georgie, was a very unwelcome yet pleasant surprise.
He's a Kook — a Cameron nonetheless — which means that he is off limits because Georgie Maybank hates Kooks.
Despises them even.
But oh boy she can't deny his beauty.
She's in love with John B but Rafe Cameron is so close to perfection that it scares her out of her goddamn mind.
The fact that he looks so perfect is exactly what scares her because there is no way in hell that a Kook with that kind of a face could ever be a good person.
Or even an okay one.
But John B? He's the sweetheart, her childhood love.
Her one and only true love.
Right?
"Uhm, scrambled eggs, toast and a coffee for me", Topper oh so nonchalantly declares glancing up at her.
Narrowing her eyes at him, she nods noting his order down.
"And you?", she tilts finally looking at Rafe.
In response, he purses his lips momentarily glancing down at the menu still held between Topper's fingers and returns his gaze to hers.
"You got fruits?".
Shock is the only word that can describe the way her eyes widen.
She had not pegged Rafe Cameron for a guy that eats fruits for breakfast.
It's just so . . . . mundane? And normal?
She blinks nodding in affirmation.
"I'll take . . . . a bowl of mixed fruits? And some coffee", he stares intently at the menu before looking up.
"Got it", she wets her lips and moves into the kitchen announcing their orders before walking back out with a fresh coffee jar full of black liquid effortlessly colliding with the glass as she puts a mug in front of both the boys.
Carefully, she pours the hot coffee into the mugs not missing the way Rafe watches her every action.
She slides the coffee filled mugs towards them and sets the jar down on the back side of the counter.
They immediately start talking about their day's plans which only consist of golfing and hanging out at the Country Club which really, for a fact, makes Georgie roll her eyes at the screen of her phone.
Kooks amuse her, you know?
They're so fucking spoiled and irresponsible that while Georgie will be minding the restaurant working so that she, her brother and her fascinatingly unconcerned dad can have food to eat, they'll be running around the golf fields of the Country Club drinking "chardonnay" with lunch.
How could people live such a terrible life and still be happy?
She's not exactly happy with her life but the Kook thing?
That just creeps her out.
Their orders get ready soon and after having placed the food in front of them, she deliberately takes her leave and walks over to attend to the customers in the far corner of the room.
Anything to get away from Rafe Cameron.
And the guy who tried to kill the love of her life.
'Love of her life'.
As soon as evening approaches, Georgie takes off jogging into the direction of the Chateau.
The sight of her friends greets her as she nears the porch, a faint smile rests on her lips which soon turns into a confused frown when she takes in their faces.
"What's wrong?".
John B sighs heavily running a hand through his excruciatingly messy hair looking even more disheveled today for some reason.
"You've missed a lot", JJ chirps up from the back of the porch.
"Oh, yeah? Like what? Care to fill me in?", she glances around the group.
It's John B who answers this time.
"We found a clue. In my dad's study. His compass, it's a family heirloom".
He pulls the compass out of his pocket and tosses it to her.
She easily catches it and immediately turns it over, inspecting each and every detail.
Her eyes run over the slightly rusted texture of the mid-18th century device while her fingertips gently touch the words clearly carved into it's back by a low grade knife.
"Redfield", she whispers.
John B hums but Georgie just cannot find it in herself to tear her eyes away from the beautiful device.
"Oh, and we almost got killed. And arrested".
At this, her head snaps up to find JJ casually shrugging.
"What", her eyes widen.
Pope inhales, "So John B found this compass in his dad's study, we'd only just found it when these murderous creeps with guns showed up here, right at the Chateau. We barely escaped and decided to go do some questioning at the Redfield lighthouse because obviously that seemed like the most rational explanation", he side glances at John B who's anxiously fidgeting with his cap.
"But the lighthouse keeper called the cops on us because apparently, a bunch of teenagers asking around about the biggest shipwreck on this island is not normal around here? So we had to run. And I almost lost my scholarship. Which means my parents almost disowned me, but still it's no big deal".
Georgie opens her mouth to speak when he speaks again.
"Oh, and you know Sheriff Peterkin? She warned John B to stay away from this shit or else she'll have to arrest him. So yeah again, no big deal".
She exhales taking everything in, her mind swirling as the weight of the compass weighs her down and her friends all look back in a mixture of shame and frustration.
"This is a lot to take in", she finally breathes out.
"Yeah, but you agree that it's not a big deal, right?", Pope edges on making JJ and Kiara roll their eyes.
Georgie, ignoring Pope, turns to John B.
"So what are you gonna do?".
"Seriously, Georgie? We were almost shot at, arrested, all in the past eight hours and that is what you ask? What he's gonna do?", Pope shakes his head.
"Well, yeah. I mean . . . . he's obviously not going to drop this", she answers gesturing at an unusually silent John B.
His eyes meet hers, the fading sunlight making the hazel brown glint with a surprised shine.
He stares at her and she stares back, knowing full well that she's right.
"She's right", he admits, gaze unwavering.
Georgie blinks quietly focusing on him.
"John B, we were almost killed. Did you not hear that part?", Pope scowls from beside him.
"I did", his stare heightens sending an unusual feeling coursing through the blonde's body, "but I'm not giving up on my dad. He wanted me to do this so".
He turns to face the others.
"I'm doing this whether y'all like it or not".
He glances back at Georgie who stays put with a hint of a smile on her lips.
