Leave my sunglasses on
while I shed a tear...
-Sia
Sully sat quietly with furrowed brows in the front row on the cold blue bleachers near the field, but her mind was stuck on Jimin. His cold, dismissive attitude replayed in her head; each memory of his cold words was like a hot poker stabbing her heart.
Her hands were uncomfortably clutched firmly in her lap, her fingers fumbling with the hem of her tracksuit sweatshirt around her waist as she tried to make sense of everything. Her heart felt heavier than she wanted to admit. Her gaze moves to the field. The players moved with precision and confidence on the field, their yells and laughter filling the air as they dribbled the ball, but her thoughts were focused on Jimin's attitude in the gym.
He had stared at her as if all those years at the same high school, the discreet looks he occasionally sent in her direction, the occasions she remembered how he read her letters with such appreciation even if he was unaware of the writer, meant nothing. Jimins' eyes had hardened quickly after just being warm. When she saw him again, she felt a rush of exhilaration.
When they locked eyes, she felt something warm rise inside her. It was as if an unseen power brought them together. She mistakenly believed that he would remember her as Joonie's little sister and view her differently now that she was grown.
The friendship she had expectedβthe warmth she felt for a brief moment when their eyes first metβhad disappeared, replaced by a coldness that hurt more than she wanted to admit. He had stared at her as if she were a flippen stranger. No, it was worseβas if she did not matter.
He just gave her a not-so-subtle hint that she's a nepotist because of Joonie's star status?getting freebies. Did he mean that as a student, she was given the opportunity to write an exclusive story about Messi that no other senior journalist in the world could acquire from him, and she earned first place in the Student Journalism award?
She solely asked human questions about his wife and children, such as their favourite things. He stated that other journalists took her essay as a 'quote'. Maybe she needs to understand that her crush doesn't like her and never did.
She and Lucia, whom she met in the cafΓ©, agreed to watch the guys practice. They wore sunglasses, but fortunately, they selected the shady side of the stadium bleachers. Lucia, Niki's vivacious and outspoken girlfriend, was like an outburst of untapped potential.
She chattered about everything, and her joy distracted Sully from her distressing thoughts. Lucia was effortlessly gorgeous, with flowing chocolate brown hair and caramel highlights; her wide brilliant dark nutbrown eyes and radiant honey tan complexion were fascinating.
Niki has quite the catch, and she is a qualified physiotherapist. Lucia was blissfully ignorant of poor Sully's inner misery.
Sully tried to keep focus by nodding at the right moments as Lucia chatted about her life as a new WAG and her and Niki's vacation plans, but Sully's thoughts kept drifting back to the enigmatic Jiminβhis calm, distant eyes, the tension in his jaw when he saw her, and the way he seemed determined to avoid her.
She wasn't even regarded as friend material in his eyes. She sure knows that she doesn't belong in their league.
Lucia was leaning back, her Dior sunglasses perched on her head, with a voice full of excitement, "Sully, you're diving into the world of the WAGs now, huh? Joon said you'll be flying with us to attend some qualifying matches. Gosh,Β It's wild. Let me give you the rundown on the WAGs you have yet to meet."
Sully forced a polite smile, nodding slightly, even though her mind drifted to Jimin on the field, where Messi was barking some instructions. He looked effortlessly handsome and adorable as he animatedly explained something to a mischievous Jungkook.
Sully smiled softly in Lucia's direction, who was chatting yet being busy on her phone.
Lucia chuckles with sparkling eyes, "First, you've got Gabriella Kim. She's Seokjin's gorgeous wife. Gabi is a popular former Spanish four-girl band member from Luna Rosa ( Pink Moon) in Spain. She had been in the band for 10 years until they broke up and started being adults. Total queen bee of the WAGs. She has this insane mansion in Palermo where she hosts all the hottest celebrity parties. Insane. She's the one who organizes all the hottest social events for the WAGs and team. You'll see, and she loves all Seokjin teammates and their girls. The most sought-after Vip invitation. They have two adorable boysβsix and three- adorable little terrors. I might say. Seriously, she's like royalty around here. Insane.. You'll see."
Sully listened to the mention of Gabriella and pulled her back into the relaxed conversation. Lucia's voice dropped slightly in a whisper.
Sully smirks at Lucia's gossiping tone. Lucia would be Sully's best informant to get over information about the players' love lives, but she'll never expose what was given in confidence.
Lucia's big eyes sparkling with gossip, "And then there's Aitana Torres. You've heard of her, right?"
Sully's heart suddenly raced at the name, her fingers tightening on the hem of her sweater. Who doesn't know that famous name? It's the name she secretly stalked. Yes, she knows she's pathetic, but everything about Jimin always took priority in her mind. She was and is still madly in love with the stoic star.
Sully inhaled deeply, "Aitana Torres...a former Miss Argentina?" as if she didn't know who the girl was. She followed every trail of the celebrity power couple.
Lucia nodded eagerly,Β "Oh yes, one of the WAGs- Jimin's darling girlfriend. Or, well, maybe fiancΓ©e soon. She is also a Victoria's Secret model. She's returning from LA soon after completing her sports fitness MBA, one of the most popular former Miss Argentina and Miss World runner-ups. She is practically perfect. They are a very popular couple...but I haven't seen her for months, even though she is also a FIFA fan ambassador."
Sully's chest tightened, and a dull ache spread through her. She knew Jimin was officially out of her de lulu reach.
Lucia grinned, "Their wealthy families are pushing hard for an engagement announcement. I mean, Jimin's one of the wealthiest guys on the national teamβowning an exquisite six-bedroom mansion in Palermo, penthouses in Seoul and Buenos Aires, condos all over Europe, gosh, even a private beach house on an island. Brand ambassador for everything under the sun. His net worth is insane, practically untouchable. His fandom adores him.' Their eagle' And his sister RosΓ©? She's dating a billionaire. A family with an old money legacy. "
Sully tried to suppress the sinking feeling in her chest. Why would she care? - she shouldn't care. Fabulous Jimin had his famous life to live, his perfect girlfriend, and his unending wealth. They were from totally different worlds now. She doesn't even fit the bill of the ideal girl for someone like him. She was adopted, doesn't know her biological father, walks with a fragile and chronic disease in her body, has no romantic interest right now, and doesn't even have money, only a trust fund that will pay out when she's 25 years oldβa small inheritance from her darlingβlate mom.
Joonie took over her living expenses, gave her a monthly amount of 250,000 won for her needs, paid for her uni and dorm fees, and wanted to buy her a small apartment when she got a job. Their dad plans to get her a cute, reliable car. He doesn't truly trust public transport. He and Joonie are very overprotective. She wondered if her dad might also arrange a marriage for her, ensuring she is settled in the right family.
Sully nodded," Good for them. They're the Argentinian power couple forΒ this era."
Lucia shrugged, "Well, the issue is that Jimin isn't eager to get hitched. He has too much going onβhis budding career, numerous endorsements, private tech businesses."
A tightness surrounded her heart, but she kept her face neutral," So Aitana wants the ring, but he's hesitant. He is young, though. Joonie is 26, but marriage is not on his mind yet..."
Lucia nodded, "Understandable. Hobi is now very happily married to a friendly lawyer, and they've got triplets, two boys and a very sassy girlβcan you imagine? And Taehyung-Jimins bestfriend ? Engaged with Ruka. Didn't you attend the same private academy in Seoul?" She lifts a well-manicured eyebrow.
Sully nodded but winced at the memory. Ruka was a relentless senior; she and her friends, like Chiquita Jimins, then girlfriend, always pointed out her unattractive glasses, full, chubby cheeks, and shy and quiet demeanour. They were the prettiest cheerleaders in Jimins' year. Among those girls, she felt like uglier than the ugly duckling. Leeseo, her best friend, had a massive crush on Taehyung, but he never even acknowledged her existence.
Lucia told her about the rest of the team," Well... and Bangchan...had the messiest, well, publicized divorce with Gina. Fierce custody battle over their two-year little girl. She is a total nightmare. She was, according to Niki, a very entitled and spoilt woman. Every year, she demanded a new sportscar, and Banchan popped up. Thank God for his sensible mother who let him put all his well-earned assets into his mom's name. Then there's savage Yoongi, who's dealing with his stalker ex. She is from England and a huge fanatic fan. Crazy, right? She still shows up at events, keeping taps on him."
Sully's eyes widened as she chuckled, "Woah...these boys' lifestyles are worthy of K-dramas."
Lucia grinned, "So, true and Hyunjin? He's back to dating casually after his ex left him for some stupid guy she had a crush on in high school. Mind you, that boy rejected her numerous times, and when she moved on...he found out she was dating an upcoming national star...he approached her, and she up and left Hyunjin for that loser. Poor Hyunjin was only a placeholder for the one she truly loved. And Nikis' best friend Jungkook..." she paused a little, chuckling as a small smile entered her lips, "...still the hot heartbreaker. He's more into casual, unserious flings. His high school sweetheart passed away in a tragic traffic accident, and he's been... different ever since. They were childhood friends. He is never serious, just a new girl every month if she's lucky and gorgeous."
Sully felt a deep sadness for Jungkook, but it drew back to Jimin. She couldn't shake the feeling of his apparent iciness, the ache it left behind.
But she didn't notice how his expressive eyes followed her from across the field, almost filled with something he couldn't nameβsomething that was hard to hide.
To her, he was so indifferent. But to him, Sully was the one thing he wasn't allowed to wantβand it was driving him crazy.
The guys were running drills out on the field, loud laughter and excited shouts echoing in the air. Sully's eyes followed Namjoon with a smile and then for a moment before unknowingly drifting toward Jimin. He moved with effortless grace, every step confident, every motion calculated. Gosh, he was the epitome of masculinity.
His intense eyesβdiscreet but unmistakablyβkept flicking in her direction. He was watching her but not openly, not enough to draw attention, but enough for Lucia to start noticing.
"Hmm, it seems like someone else might be on his mind," Lucia said, her eyes sparkling with a teasing glint, following Sully's gaze.
Sully got flustered,Β shook her head, and quickly dismissed it, "No... he's just focused on practice."
But inside, her fragile heart was in a swirl of confusion and yearning. She had no idea what was behind Jimin's unreadable facade; his eyes were searching for her, and he was drawn to her in a way he couldn't explain.
His eyes lingered again softly on her as he wiped the sweat from his face. They were drawn to the afternoon sun shining on her reddish hair and the quiet grace of how she sat beside Lucia, oblivious to his gaze.
Jimin's jaw tightened as he forced himself to focus on the practice. He would be in big trouble if Namjoon noticed. Sully was so oblivious, lost in her thoughts and the conversation, duly unaware of how Jimin's heart stirred inside him. He scolded himself that he shouldn't look at Joon's sister; he shouldn't care.
She was off-limits, and his relationship with Aita was still in limbo. Sully was a distraction he couldn't affordβa reminder of something more straightforward, something forbidden. But no matter how hard he tried to look away, his eyes always seemed to find her. She remained so oblivious to the silent war his heart was raging as he fought every time he glanced her way.
Sully's chest tightened again. Lucia's description of the world surrounding the team seemed so distant from her lifeβa world of wealth, heartbreak, and complicated relationships.
[ Sully in Grade 10]
Jimin was the first to run to the showers to get ready to leave the place of confusion. Today was the most emotional and trying day of his life. He found what his heart was looking for, but the timing was out of sync.
He met the girl who stirred his heart with one gaze on her, but with all the wealth, he couldn't dream of having her...she was the one thing he could not afford to have.
After he refreshed, he quickly greeted his teammates and escaped to the entrance, forcefully ignoring the two girls who came through and calmly chatted.
He and Sully fleetingly locked eyes, but he quickly diverted his attention to his iPhone. His darling sister sent him a message asking him to meet her for lunch at LA Cabrera, one of Buenos Aires's exclusive restaurants.
