Isla was the one who recruited him, if Miguel had done it he doubted he would have even considered joining. But there was something so convincing, so alluring and charming about Isla that he had reluctantly agreed. Venom was also hilarious, and he found that endearing.
"On your left is our strength and conditioning facility, also known as the gym." Isla smiled, directing his attention towards said location. A glowing yellow lady popped up beside her, tilting her heart-shaped sunglasses at the two of them. "Who's he?" the unnamed entity questioned. "Lyla this is Hobie, Hobie this is Lyla, Miguel's personal assistant." "BTW, he wants to see you in his office." Lyla interjected absentmindedly, observing her nails. Isla sighed, rubbing a hand over her face. "Tell him I'm busy." "He said it's urgent." "Fine, Lyla tell him I'll be there in five minutes, Hobie, follow me."
He saluted the glowing entity, following closely behind the curly-haired woman. "I have to go deal with the man-baby so I'll have my pupil show you around. She's actually kind of your exact opposite, very soft and pink, but I think you should get along fine." The two metal doors in front of them opened automatically as they slowly continued down the hall. "Our goal here is to catch anomalies such as the one you saw in your universe. Poppy can explain all that to you, POPPY!"
Isla cupped her hand over her mouth yelling into the vast abyss of her office, on the floor in the back of the room someone in a pink and black suit sat across from a girl adorned in a black and white one. The one in pink whipped her head around. Isla waved her over, "This is Poppy Parker, she's a Peter Parker variant from Earth 287. Poppy, this is Hobie Brown from Earth 138, I think he's a Miles variant, I'll have to check with Lyla."
The girl stuck out her hand, "Pleasure to meet you," He took her hand, shaking it. "Back at y'a mate." Isla smiled, "That over there is Love Lee, she's a Silk variant." The small girl in the corner waved, a deck of colorful cards in hand.
"They will show you around, I have to go deal with the big man." Isla rolled her eyes, "There's a boss?" Hobie questioned shoving his hands back into his pockets. "I guess you could call him that, he formed the whole thing." "He is also a very large man. Like unusually so." Love chimed, in stretching her arm into the air as if to show his size as she approached them.
Isla nodded, "Yeah well, I'm going to go, you're in good hands Hobie." She smiled at him. "Welcome to Spider Society."
๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐,
Poppy hadn't taken off her mask the whole time, even Love had taken hers off but Poppy had refused. "This is where Margo sends anomalies back home, we call it the 'go-home machine'." Poppy explained gesturing to the device.
"Go-home machine? That's the best you lot could come up with," Hobie playfully teased the small black haired girl who smiled up at him sheepishly, "The name's a work in progress." Love smiled. "Margo solely handles the machine, but she's not here at the moment so let's move on." Poppy urged, quickly walking in front of the two.
Hobie slowed his large steps in order to match the younger girl's smaller ones, leaning down to Love's height, he whispered in her ear. "What's her deal?" Love shrugged, "She's actually really cool I promise, she might just be in a mood but don't worry, you'll like her. Everyone does, she's perfect." The taller man scoffed, "No one's perfect luv."
"That's Miguel's office. We're not going inside." Poppy pointed in the direction of a hallway. "He the 'big man' Venom was going to meet." Poppy nodded. "He's not my biggest fan." The eyes of her mask seemed to smile at the thought. Hobie looked her up and down.
"Y'a gonna take off that mask?" Poppy glared at him, he raised his hands as if to surrender. "Was just curious is all."
The trio continued their tour, Hobie noticed as they strolled through the halls of Spider Society, multiple greetings were shot at Poppy, lovesick smiles and looks of admiration shot her way. It was strange.
Once again Hobie slowed his steps, leaning down to whisper in Love's ear, "What's up with all 'em? Why are they so entranced with her?" "I already told you, she's perfect." "She may pretend to be perfect, but ain't no one perfect darling." "When you get to know her you'll find out she is." "When I get to know her I'll find out who she really is."
Poppy halted as the trio slowly approached Isla's office once again. "That concludes our tour, any other questions you can always ask me, Isla, or Love!" She whipped around, hands interlocked behind her back, her voice drenched in a thick French accent.
"Imma be honest, could hardly understand you the whole time. Your accents' too strong." Poppy looked offended, "My accent is too strong? I don't even know what you're saying half the time." Hobie took a step closer to her, smirking. "What was that? Can't hear you? Your mask is muffling your words." "No it is not espรจce de conโฏ!" "What was that? I couldn't hear you."
Poppy crossed her arms taking a step forward, "Yes you can." "I can't hear you over your Parisianism." "I don't even think that's a word." Love mumbled, awkwardly rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet.
"You're infuriating." "What was that?" Hobie cupped his hand over ear, leaning down closer to her. Poppy grabbed the bottom of the pink cloth on her face ripping it off.
Hobie vividly remembers when he first met Poppy, because that was the first time he began to believe in heaven.
There was absolutely no way you could convince him this girl wasn't a fallen angel.
"Can you understand me now, enculer?" She quirked her eyebrow, crossing her arms. Her plush pink lips pursed in an angry pout. "Loud and clear." He smiled, shoving his hands into his pockets. His tongue ran over the cold metal of his lip piercing, as she looked her up and down.
Poppy took note of this smiling, her pearly white teeth seemed to sparkle under the dark blue light of Isla's office.
And that was all it took. One smile and she never left his mind again.
๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐,
her nostrils, her soft eyes slowly opening. Poppy groaned, flipping herself over to face the door. Reluctantly, she stood got up. Her hand stretching over her head, wringing the sleep from her bones. Her mouth was dry, her soft cheeks tear stained.
She twisted the door knob, a low melody flooded her ear drums, the silence of the apartment was replaced by the clanking of glasses and pans.
"Buenos dรญas mi niรฑa bonita." Isla's calming voice overlapped the noise, she slid a plate towards the girl. Poppy rubbed the sleep out of her eyes, attempting to observe what was placed in front of her.
Presented before her was a large plate, an assortment of cut of mangoes and strawberries as well as what Poppy could identify as crepes were placed before her. She looked back up at the older woman who was beaming at her.
"I wanted to make you feel more at home, so I googled some recipes, there's croissants in the oven." A proud smile was painted across her features. Poppy shot her a small smile.
"It's amazing Isla, thank you." Isla nodded, placing the last dish into the dishwasher. "Make yourself at home, anything you want you can have. Just don't get drunk, the drinking she in Europe is 18 right? Doesn't matter, you're mature enough." As she spoke she began to shove her belongings into her bag, "I have to get to work, I'll be back in three hours okay?"
Poppy nodded, slowly taking a bite of her strawberry. Isla placed a quick kiss on her forehead, brushing the girl's hair out of her eyes. "Promise me you won't sulk all day okay? You got this, all of this will be fixed soon."
Poppy let out a soft laugh, "We'll see." Isla playfully rolled her eyes, "Alright, I'll see you later mi cielo." And with that she was gone.
Poppy finished up her breakfast, taking the tray of croissants out of the oven, allowing them to cool.
What was she going to do now? She made her way over to the couch, unraveling the blanket rolled up on the couch.
Grabbing the remote, Poppy sprawled across the couch, mindlessly clicking through channels until she found one interesting enough.
She hated feeling lazy but it was just for three hours.
๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ ,
the muffled chatter of some sitcom filled that empty apartment along with the sound of loud chewing.
Chewing?
Poppy's head shot up, franctially looking around as she attempted to locate where the noise was coming from.
What good were spider senses if they don't work for intruders?
Slowly, Poppy crept towards the kitchen, the sound of obnoxious chewing grew louder as she approached. She really hoped it wasn't anyone she would have to fight, all she was wearing was a comically oversized graphic tee for fuck's sake.
She slowly peaked her head into the kitchen, gasping at the sight she was met with.
The man she had been successfully avoiding for almost three weeks now, sat on Isla's counter mindlessly flipping through one of the fashion magazines Isla had subscribed to, a croissant in hand. His head shot up, eyes slowly roaming over her figure, a small smirk spread across his face.
"Whassup dovey?"
LOVE SPEAKS!
Someone commented asking if Poppy makes her own web fluid or if she just has web shooters on her at all times, I will leave that up to your imagination. I was thinking about ruining their relationship when I remembered Hobie doesn't like consistency so his relationships probably wouldn't last long and neither would his crushes. But I decided to be nice. Also, some people don't see Hobie as an adult despite the fact it was officially announced, so I can't add anything slightly suggestive like I planned for the next chapter but if you are comfortable with it let me know.
Also, don't rush me. Every chapter after the third one has been bad because I'm just trying to get chapters out as fast as possible same with Dead to me. You want better quality chapters? Don't rush me.
