The Meeting
I almost gagged as I cleaned the blood off one of the windows in sickbay. Another patient had died from this horrible virus and since I was one of the only nurses left in the hospital, it was my job to clean it up. My pristine white coat brushed against the bare skin of my legs as I reached my gloved hand up the glass, wiping in circles. The CDC kept saying over and over that all of this was nearly over but that didn't seem to be the case. It was now the third week of isolation for those of us in the Cordon and they hadn't let the walls down yet...and at this point, I'm not sure they ever will.
Suddenly, the thud of heavy combat boots broke the silence around me. I lifted my head up in the direction it came from and saw a police officer coming down the hallway. A woman and little boy trailed behind him. The woman wore a white mask so only half of her face was visible. She walked up to one of the doctors.
"Hello, yes, we're here to see Thomas. He's one of my students." the woman said, the little boy, who I assumed was her son, walked up behind her.
The doctor nodded and walked off down the long hallway. I paused momentarily as I watched the three of them walk away, the woman's shoes clicking on the white tiled floor. I briefly wonder if the police officer is her husband since he was with her.
"I haven't seen you before. And I've been here a long time now." a voice said, breaking me out of my thoughts.
I turn my head to the owner of the voice to find the police officer looking at me. His piercing blue eyes stared right into mine and I could just see the outlines of his muscles beneath his blue police uniform.
"Um, yeah, I'm one of the nurses here. One of the lucky few who were still in the building when the outbreak happened," I said, tossing the used, bloody rag in my hand into one of the trash-bins.
He nodded as I peeled off my gloves and threw them in the trash-bin as well.
"That still doesn't explain why I haven't seen you here before. I mean, there's clearly not that many nurses and doctors left," he said as he walked closer to me.
He was obviously violating the four-to-six feet rule but I didn't say anything.
"I've been tending to the other patients - ones not infected. That's actually what I've been doing the entire time we've been in lock-down." I admitted, putting my hands in the pockets of my white coat.
"Well, that's my bad, then," he said solemnly.
I looked up at him with a questioning look.
"I still should've noticed a pretty girl like you sooner."
I arched an eyebrow, crossing my arms.
"We're in the middle of an outbreak and that's the best pick-up line you can come up with?" I snorted, smiling slightly.
He grinned.
"Okay, okay. It's been a while since I've been on a date, obviously," he laughed.
"Obviously," I laughed with him.
He held out a hand to me for a moment before thinking better of it and letting it fall to his side.
"I'm Jake, by the way. Jake Riley."
I smiled up at him.
"Molly Forbes."
"Well, Molly Forbes...since it's been a while since I've been on a date and you clearly look like you need a break from all of this madness...would you like to go on a date with me?" he asked hopefully, his blue eyes boring into mine.
I pursed my lips and tried to fight back a smile.
"Fine. Fine, I will," I relented, grinning.
"Great! " he cheered, "I'll come get you at seven, then?"
I nodded in agreement and he smiled back at me. I bit my lip as I turned back around. Suddenly, Jake stopped in his track and turned back to me.
"Oh, I forgot to mention that it will have to be in the cafeteria," he said, making a face.
I laughed at his expression and shook my head.
"That's fine, Jake."
"Okay, great!" he said, starting to turn around once more.
He sighed then and I laughed again, waiting on him to start speaking again.
"Also, all I can offer you is snack-machine food and orange soda. Is that okay?" he asked, cringing slightly.
"Well, I'm not Kel but that sounds fine." I joked.
He grinned and then began walking down the hallway. As he left, I watched him go. Gosh, he was hot, I thought, blushing furiously.
Note: First person to guess the orange soda reference gets a dedication in my next one shot ;) Also mollx3, I hope you don't mind me using your name in this! :)
