Target Practice

"Come on, it won't be that bad," Jake Riley, my boyfriend of two years, said to me, pulling me by the hand.

"No, Jake, I can't! What if I hurt someone? What if I hurt you?" I said, trying to wrench my hand free of his grip,"Oh my gosh, Jake, what if I hurt you?! I couldn't live with myself if-"

"That's enough! You're not going to hurt me or anyone else. You're going to learn how to defend yourself." Jake interrupted as he pulled me through the hospital halls.

Jake and I had been locked in here accidentally. Jake was just doing his job but once I heard about the outbreak, I went straight to the hospital to check on him...getting myself locked in as well. But it was worth it, just to know that he was alright. Jake didn't really see it that way though, he was too worried about my safety to worry about his. And no that part of the city was cordoned off, he had decided that I needed to learn how to shoot a gun...if the need ever arise. So that's how we got here, Jake, in his gray tank top and black finger-less gloves, pulling me, clad in skinny jeans and an Avengers t-shirt, through the halls of the hospital, my purple sneakers squeaking on the white tiled floor.

Finally, we came to a large metal door and he pushed on it with his shoulder. It opened and Jake pulled me in after him. The door shut with a clang behind us and I finally saw where we were. We were outside on the rooftop of the building. He let go of my wrist and I walked further out onto the building, grinning as the warm sun kissed my skin. I felt strong arms snake around my waist and Jake nuzzled my neck, placing light kisses there. I shivered at his touch and turned around in his arms.

"Thank you for this. I haven't seen the sun in so long," I said, the warm sunshine brightening my mood.

Jake smirked and let go of me, walking over to some old Coca-Cola cans he had set up along the edge of the rooftop.

"Now it's time for your target practice. These-" he said gesturing towards the cans,"-are what you'll be shooting."

He handed me a pistol and I took it hesitantly. He smiled at me sympathetically.

"Hey, it's alright. I won't let anything bad happen to you, I promise." he said, coming to stand beside me.

I nodded to him as he began to instruct me. Once he finished, I nodded again and raised up my gun, aiming it at the cans. I stuck the tip of my tongue out of the side of my mouth in determination and fired. The bullet hit the railing with a ping! I aimed the pistol again and another bullet rang out, missing again. I sighed to myself and leaned my head back.

"This is not going to work, Jake. I'm not good at this!" I whined, letting my hand holding the gun go limp at my side.

"Hey, don't say that! You just need practice, that's all," he said, coming up behind me.

His muscular arms encircled mine and he guided my hands back up, aiming it at the cans again. His hot breath tickled my ear as he leaned in closer to me. My heart sped up at his closeness. Even though, Jake and I had been dating this long, he still gave me butterflies.

"Just aim..." he whispered, his hands moving down my arms to rest on my shoulders,"...and release."

And as he said it, I released my hold on the trigger and a bullet pierced one of the cans, making it fall off the side of the building.

"YES!" I cheered, dropping the gun as I did and turning back to Jake.

"Yes! You did it!" he grinned, picking me up in his arms and spinning me around.

I laughed at his exuberance. He set me down then and pressed his soft lips to mine. My lips moved with his and I melted into the kiss. How did I ever get so lucky to have him? I broke away then and looked into his ocean-blue eyes that I loved so much.

"Thank you," I whispered to him, my forehead leaning against his.

He grinned and licked his plump pink lips.

"Anything for you," he whispered back softly, leaning in to kiss me again.

So what if it we were in the middle of an outbreak? I had him and that was all I needed.
