Promise?
Five days. It had been five days since I'd last seen Jake, heard his voice, smelled his cologne, saw his smile. I sighed to myself as thoughts of him filled my mind. I couldn't even contact him now since all communication within the cordon had been cut off. I had no way of knowing if he was even okay. A tear rolled down my cheek and I brushed it away. I had to find a way to get to him.
I ran around my apartment hurriedly, picking up random objects I thought I'd need and stuffed them into my green backpack. When it was full, I zipped it up and slung it over my shoulder. My hand went to the necklace I was wearing, my fingertips touching the cool metal. Jake had given it to me on our first anniversary. I closed my eyes briefly and took a deep breath. I opened the door and walked out of my apartment.
I had to get to Jake. I pulled up the hood of my jacket as I stepped out onto the pavement. The wall wasn't too far from here. I just had to figure out how to get over it. I ran down the street, careful not to be noticed. I stopped when I finally reached the wall, made up of freight containers.
I tilted my head back, its height daunting. The freight containers were stacked fifteen feet high. I took a deep breath and walked closer to it. I reached up my hands, getting a hold on the top of the first container. As I heaved myself up, the metal scraped some skin off of my hand. I bit back a whimper as blood seeped out of the wound.
Wiping my bleeding hands on the leg of my jeans, I continued to climb. After several minutes of climbing the containers, I finally made it over and dropped down, my feet hitting the ground with a thud. I took off running, my heart leaping at the thought of seeing Jake again. Once I reached the hospital, I made my way around back and sneaked into one of the back doors. It creaked loudly behind me but I didn't care. At this point, Jake was all that mattered.
My footsteps were quiet as I wandered the empty hallways, looking into every open door I saw.
He has to be here! Why isn't he here?! I panicked as I kept looking.
Suddenly, I heard laughing and talking. I rounded the corner up ahead and peeked into one of the rooms. There sat Jake with a little boy. They were sitting on the floor, playing and laughing. My heart melted at the sight. I spoke up then.
"Jake," I said softly, hovering in the doorway.
Jake's head snapped up and his beautiful cerulean-blue eyes met mine. His look was a mixture of shock and relief.
"Emma," he breathed out and within seconds, I was in his arms.
I tried to hold it in to no avail and before I knew it, I was sobbing into his tight black t-shirt. He held me close and rubbed his hand up and down my back.
"Shh, shh, baby, it's okay," he soothed, "You're safe, you're with me now."
I lifted my head up and Jake wiped away my tears with his thumbs.
"I missed you so much," I choked out as he pushed a strand of hair out of my eyes.
He brought me back to his chest, his muscular arms encircling me.
"I missed you, too. And I promise you that I will never let us be separated again." he said, placing kisses in my hair.
I looked up at him then, tears lingering in my eyes.
"Promise?" I whispered.
He cupped my face in his hands gently.
"I promise." he said softly.
