Butterfinger Bars at Midnight
Note: Okay, so after getting so many views on the first one (which was a massive confidence booster lol XD), I've decided to make this into a book of one shots :) I'll try to update them when I can :) Anyway, on to the next story then!! :D
The halls were empty and it was dark inside the hospital. Those locked inside had gone to bed for the night while I was still awake. I couldn't sleep though - not with everything going on. It scared me too much. Just the thought of getting infected made me shiver. I pulled my sweater closer to my body as I walked past windows that looked out onto the city. The lights from the buildings were bright and I could see police officers patrolling below me.
I wasn't even supposed to be here. My sister had wanted me to come with her while she took the elementary school kids she taught on a field trip. Why there was even a field trip to a hospital of all places, I'd never know. But I had agreed and before we knew it, we were on lock down. No way out. At first, they kept saying it was only 48 hours but that had passed and now we didn't know what would happen.
I looked down at my watch.
12:05 AM
I sighed to myself as I made my way to the cafeteria. It wasn't much. Just a few tables and chairs with a snack machine by the window. I walked closer to the snack machine and dug some change out of my pocket. I inserted it in the slot and the machine released one of the candy bars. I grinned as I pulled out a Butterfinger Bar from the compartment it had fell into.
The paper crackled loudly as I unwrapped it and took a bite.
"Mmm," I moaned as the chocolate-taste hit my tongue.
"Must be really good." I heard a masculine voice say suddenly.
I dropped my candy in surprise as I turned around to see who the voice belonged to.
Jake Riley.
"Oh, it's you," I said as I bent down to pick up my now-dirty Butterfinger Bar.
"What? Not happy to see me?" he joked as he took off his helmet and set it on the table beside him.
I frowned at him as I threw my candy into the trashbin and proceeded to sit in one of the empty chairs that surrounded me. He walked over to the table and sat down across from me. I stared out one of the windows, trying ignore him but I felt his dark blue eyes watching me. I sighed deeply in exasperation.
"What?!" I snapped, finally turning my eyes to meet his.
He continued to look at me a second before responding.
"Why?" he asked calmly.
"Why what?"
"Why are you angry at me?"
I sighed before answering him.
"I'm not angry with you. I just....I just hate being here like this with no way to get out." I said, letting the anger that previously filled my voice melt away.
He smiled at me sadly and nodded.
"I know, I feel the same way." he said as I got up from my seat and walked over to the window.
"I just don't want to be here, that's all." I said, staring out into the night sky.
But that wasn't just the reason...not all of it, anyway. He was the reason. Ever since the day he helped my sister and I find my nephew - when all of this started. Everything about him was...intoxicating. The way he smiled, the way he walked, the way his cologne smelled. Everything about him took my breath away and I couldn't stand it. And being locked in here with him.... I could barely take it anymore.
I reached up my hand to touch the blinds and played with the cord, wrapping it around my fingers absentmindedly. I felt him walk up behind me and lean closer. I could feel his hot breath on the back of my neck and closed my eyes, trying to will away my feelings. But it wasn't working. Everytime he got close to me, this happened. But I couldn't have feelings for him.
Not under these circumstances. It wouldn't work out. It wasn't fair to either of us. He put his hand on my shoulders then and spun me around. His eyes bored into mine and I saw concern there.
"Are you alright?" he asked me softly.
I swallowed and tried not to shiver from his touch. I pulled back from him and nodded.
"Just a little tired, I guess." I lied, forcing a smile.
He shook his head at me, his eyebrows furrowed.
"No, that's not it. What's bothering you?" he asked me, his face mere inches from mine now.
I felt my face heat up from the closeness. What was it about him that made me feel this way? His eyes flicked down to my lips then but only briefly before meeting mine once more. He leaned closer then and my heart skipped a beat. He was going to kiss me.
"Jake," I said abruptly, putting my hands on his muscular chest to keep him at bay, "Four to six feet, remember?"
He grinned at me mischeviously before leaning in again, his warm breath in my face.
"I don't care." his voice but a whisper as his lips captured mine.
At first, I was shocked but then I melted into the kiss. His lips were soft and plump and mine moved in sync with his. His hands wrapped around my waist, pulling me closer to him. I reached my hands to cup his face, my fingers sliding down his jaw as he deepened the kiss. I couldn't believe this was happening. I'd only known him a few days but this felt right.
We both broke away then, breathlessly and I looked up at him, biting my lip. He smiled down at me and pulled me even closer to him. I laid my head on his chest and we looked out of the window at the stars that shone brightly in the night sky. Who know that destiny could find you in the apocalypse?
