Babies and The Future

I sat down on the carpeted floor, my back resting against the glass as screams came from Room 3. Jake and I had come to deliver food to Jana and the others. But apparently, Theresa was having her baby...now. I knew nothing about delivering babies. Nothing. I had been adopted and never knew anything about my own parents.

When I was younger, it had bothered me. Made me so mad and hurt that they just gave me away. All of that changed though and the anger I had felt dissipated once I met Jake. He took the pain away. He made everything better, clearer. I smiled as I thought of him now, Officer Jake Riley, the player bad-boy delivering an 18 year-old girl's baby.

Back when I had met him, all those years ago, I never would've thought we'd be in this situation. Another scream pierced the air and a thought occurred to me. What if Jake and I had a baby? And the world was still in the mess that it was now? Would I be having a baby in an office building like Theresa was?

Suddenly, there was the sound of a baby crying and Xander starting crying tears of joy. A few minutes later, Jana wheeled Theresa out of the room in a wheelchair, her newborn baby swaddled in her arms. As her and Xander cooed over their baby, I lifted myself up from the floor and walked back into the room. Jake was washing his hands off in a bowl of water, the blood draining off of his long fingers. I leaned in the doorway and took in the sight of him - his tousled brown hair, his crumpled blue police uniform, and those startling blue eyes of his that you could drown in if you let yourself.

If we weren't in the middle of an outbreak, I'd ask him to marry me right this minute.

"Enjoying the view?" Jake teased, snapping me from my thoughts.

I rolled my eyes as he walked closer to me, resting his hands on my waist.

"What were you thinking about?" he asked, rubbing his thumbs back and forth across my t-shirt.

"Do you think that will be us one day?" I asked him, surprising myself with my boldness.

His breath hitched, making me look up at him hesitantly. For a moment, I watched him and almost saw a thousand thoughts swirling his mind before he spoke.

"I hope so," he grinned, resting his head on mine, "It will be. One day."

I bit my lip and butterflies swarmed in my stomach.

"Do you really mean that? Would you really want that with me? Marriage? A baby? All of it?"

He hummed in response and gently kissed me, his soft lips gliding over mine smoothly. When he broke away, it left me breathless as I looked up into his ocean-blue eyes.

"I want everything with you. I want the rest of my life to be spent with you," he said seriously, love shining in his eyes, "And when this is all over, we can start."

A smile lit up my face and he pulled me into his chest, wrapping his muscular arms around me. I sighed as I breathed in the cologne on his neck and snuggled deeper into him.

"I love you, Jake Riley." I mumbled into his t-shirt.

"I love you too, babygirl...I love you, too..." he said, kissing the top of my head.
