| #5: Don't ruin the birthday lunch |

-

It was Grisha Jaeger's 50th birthday, and as he did every year, he organized an event with his entire family and close friends to celebrate.

He always likes to keep these kinds of gatherings because he knows he doesn't need a huge party, especially at his age, to enjoy his birthday and he'd like to keep it this way for the rest of his birthdays if he was completely honest.

He never did anything extravagant, but as usual, after his family found out about what he wanted to do for his birthday, they took the reins and jumped on board with the preparations. Though, deep down he knew it was just to stay in his good graces.

He decided that he'd let them take charge and go the extra mile for his birthday, because the truth is, he wasn't getting any younger, and all he really wanted was to hold a gathering in his own home and take a family picture with his loved ones.

Which is why he's thankful that his family members listened to what he wanted and now, he was exactly where he hoped to be

It was no secret that Grisha's wealth has led him to have a rather...humble home. He had a backyard that was more than big enough to fit what he needed for this gathering. Currently, he was sitting at the head of a long dining table that was set up outside with a centerpiece in the middle that held Grisha's favorite arrangement, utensils, plates, and so on.

Behind Grisha, there was a 3 layer-tiered cake that had the words 'Happy Birthday, Father' on icing. Across the yard there was a table with empty glasses lined up, and ready to be used. There was also a catering service with chefs standing alongside the table of refreshments and drinks. Everything seemed to be in order, just as Grisha wanted it.

All Grisha was doing now was sitting in his respective seat, with his cane propped up against the table next to him, waiting for his family to arrive. He was also wearing his sharpest suit to go with the occasion. As he did, he closed his eyes for a moment and heard the sounds of nature around him.

There was so much greenery in his backyard, that he was rather proud of growing, and that he was happy to have the opportunity to come outside to see whenever he wanted to. He liked listening to the sounds of birds chirping, leaves rustling, the breeze against him. It was perfect.

As he continued to wait, Grisha held this resting hardened look on his face that never failed to scare off and intimidate the rest of his family. It never failed to make them always try extra hard to make a good impression in front of him.

He was the chairman of an entire enterprise after all, and also head of the family. His life experience accounted for the respect his entire family wanted to show in front of him, especially his own children.

Grisha knew the gathering was about to begin when he suddenly heard footsteps coming down the stairs that led down to his yard and where the party was set up. Without turning his head, he knew exactly who it was.

His first born, Zeke Jaeger, suddenly took the last step of the stairway and began to make his way over to his father. His associate, Yelena was following close behind him, displaying an appearance of respect towards Grisha when she saw the chairman turn his head and look up to make eye-contact with Zeke and her.

Yelena went wherever Zeke went, and at this point, she never missed one of these events if she wasn't family. She oversees and arranges anything that Zeke needs in and out of his company. It's clear to everyone else that spending so much time with Zeke means that she has secrets that she has never divulged to anyone. Career-ending secrets, at that.

She is completely devoted to fulfilling his every wish that it was starting to become creepy. Every time you saw Yelena at a gathering, you knew that the way she acted came from her fear of Zeke and she never dares to challenge or oppose him. You'd find it very chilling how she's always looking for his approval, not only from him, but also from Grisha at times.

Another person that had come along to the lunch gathering with Zeke and Yelena was Floch Forster. He had been walking right behind Yelena and kept to himself. His story when coming into the family was a bit complex.

Floch came into the family when Zeke took him in, not as a son or family, but more as someone he just saw potential in. But everyone in the family knew that Zeke only took Floch in and added him to the family out of convenience and nothing else.

Zeke reached his father, and stood in front of him, sending him a smile that had no intent behind them and looked like it was done a thousand times before. And Grisha immediately took notice of that, knowing his son like the back of his hand.

"Hello, father. Happy birthday. Hope you have many good years to come" Zeke said in a neutral yet warm tone that could easily be disguised to anyone else as a normal congratulatory voice.

But Grisha could easily see through it, and broke eye contact with his son as he looked away."Thank you, Zeke. But I know I'll outlive all of you" Grisha said briskly, and a forced smile came upon Zeke's face. His eyes almost twitched, too. Every year he became less and less subtle about it.

He seemed to hide every word he wanted to say back well enough, though. He kept a toothless smile on his face and sent his father a nod before turning his head away, making brief eye contact with Yelena and Floch who were both quietly and patiently standing behind him.

"I'm sure you will" Zeke muttered to himself as he stepped away from his father and began to make his way to the table where he'd sit for lunch. He bit back any other thought that was on the tip of his tongue, but refused to say out loud for obvious reasons. He just got here after all.

Zeke felt like he should already be used to this, but what else should he expect from his own father. Even if he was the CEO for Eldia Group's Electronics division, strangely enough, he still felt like he lived under his father's shadow all the time despite all of the efforts and accomplishments he's brought to the company over the years. It's formed a bit of...bitterness and resentment over the years that Zeke hasn't been able to shake off.

He came to terms with the fact that he's had to live up to his father's impossibly high expectations over time, and never actually reach them. He was his father's eldest son, and yet, it felt like he was working for a stone wall. His view of life had shifted because of it, and even then, Zeke's sights were set on something much, much bigger.

Shortly after Zeke sat down, Yelena and Floch silently followed and took the seat right next to him. Yelena sat next to her boss, and Floch sat next to her.

While Floch showed complete disinterest, and quite frankly looked zoned out, Yelena was quietly watching the interaction between Zeke and his father, only preparing to speak if it was required of her, as opposed to Floch who simply kept to himself and would rather not interact with anybody during this whole event.

"Tell me, Zeke," Grisha started as he put both of his arms on the armrests of his chair and one of his arms reached for his cane. Hearing his father's words, Zeke turned his head and looked at him expectantly waiting for his next words. "Still drowning your sorrows in wine?" Grisha said in a flatly, uninterested tone, that began to make something flare inside of Zeke. He needed to keep it together.

"I've been sober for a while, father," Zeke said, sending him another round of that forced smile that he had on his face before, and quickly responded to his father's question anyway. This is one of the things that tested his self-control every day, but he felt like he was getting better at it.

Grisha eyed his eldest son's features for a second, zeroing his eyes on the way Zeke's expression shifted from that forced smile to something that was entirely different. Grisha could tell right away that those words were a curtain for the truth of what his son has been up to. But it was his birthday today, and Grisha would not spend energy trying to find out now.

Grisha's eyes then shifted to Yelena who he noticed had been keeping to herself from the moment she walked in, but still managed to stay alert and noticed how the chairman's gaze had shifted to her.

She straightened up in her seat, Grisha narrowed his eyes at Yelena, and he could see her shrinking in on herself when he did this but kept her head high.

Grisha let out a huff and tightened his grip a little bit more on his cane as he leaned back on his seat. "Yelena, still working for Zeke, I see. Do you enjoy it?" Grisha inquired, but already knew exactly what the dynamic was between her and his son. He just wanted to know if anything's changed.

Yelena tensed a bit but sent Grisha a toothless smile as she kept her position straight in her seat and nodded almost instantaneously.

"Oh, yes. Of course, sir. Your son is a great boss and mentor to me." Yelena said in a suspiciously hurried manner, and not to mention overly eager tone, that made Grisha raise an eyebrow. He was well aware she tends to try and...overcompensate every time she's a part of these family events. It was painfully obvious.

He didn't do anything else besides giving her a nod and not reply anything back. At least not loudly enough for Zeke and her to hear. "Let's see how long that lasts" Grisha muttered to himself, noticing how Yelena let out quite a breath as soon as she felt like she was in the clear for the rest of the afternoon. Grisha zeroed his gaze onto her, studying her behavior.

Her constant need to seek approval, from Zeke mostly, has always bothered Grisha. And this was because, in Yelena's head, to stay in Zeke's good side, she had to also make sure that she was on good terms with the one at the top, which was Grisha, before all else.

Grisha didn't always want to come off as careless, cold, and blunt as he is in front of his family, but many of them have given him plenty of reasons to not deserve his forgiveness any longer.

Especially Zeke, and many others that had yet to arrive for this lunch. He just wasn't going to let them eat off of the hand that feeds them and he just gave them the treatment that they were asking for after abusing that kindness for too long.

Now, gatherings like these were just his own family acting in their best behavior to make up for exactly that, with fake smiles, acted politeness, no ingenuity and Grisha saw right through it. Keep in mind, it wasn't all of his family members, but just a select few that Grisha would not allow to let himself be taken advantage of or his wealth.

And it was the adults for the most part, which disappointed Grisha most of all. He was done trying to mend their behavior when that's something they should come to terms with themselves.

And then there was Floch, nobody truly knows what Zeke's intention was when he brought him into the family when he was just a kid. Over the years, you've noticed how quiet he really is and how he encloses himself, and it's more often than not when he's around the family. You figured that it was some sort of tactic to make himself invisible in order to survive in this family.

You never really blamed him for it, because he knows that trying to even bring himself out there would be practically throwing himself into the lion's den. You always caught him looking blankly across the room or just keeping quiet and focusing on the person who was talking. You've had a couple conversations with him here and there but it never really went anywhere.

After that, the rest of the family members would one by one start arriving shortly. Grisha began to brace himself and knew that he already had a lot to brace himself for, preparing for what the rest of the afternoon would have in store after already welcoming to the lunch just one part of his family.

Grisha took one last look at Zeke, Yelena, and Floch as each of them kept to themselves. Tightening his grip around his cane, he let out a short huff, then turned his gaze forward to the other end of the table and into the distance of the backyard.

This gathering was far from over and he needed to brace himself, already having an expectation of what he would expect in behavior from his family from here on out, but it wasn't anything he wasn't used to.

The sound of another set of footsteps pulled Grisha from his thoughts and then turned his head to spot Karina Braun coming down the stairs into the backyard, as her presence radiated both over-acted friendliness and kindness, and once again, doing it in an overly compensating way that Grisha could already sense even from a distance. Close behind Karina, her son Reiner was walking briskly and calmly by his mom's side.

As the two of them eventually made it out of the stairs and made their way across the grass, and towards Grisha and the large dining table, he could sense even more of the lack of ingenuity coming his way.

Karina was wearing a stylish yet appropriate dress for the occasion, and Reiner was wearing a formal suit that fit him like a glove and his expression and stance was serene and collected while Karina seemed to be a little over-excited

Reiner followed behind his mom and looked around the area. Seems like none of his other relatives that he actually gets along with have arrived, so he'd have to wait until they do. He followed behind his mom as Karina sped up in her pace and reached Grisha at the head of the table.

"Grisha, happy birthday, dear! How's the company doing?" Karina said as she congratulated him while looking down at him as he stayed in his seat, but Grisha grimaced a little inwardly when he heard her bring up work during his birthday. This was the one day of the year that he'd rather not mix business with. He looked at Karina and noticed how her eyes sparkled with intrigue and seemed far too forced and rehearsed for his liking.

Reiner joined his mom's side not even a couple seconds later, which Grisha took notice of and he briefly turned his head to look up at Karina's son to then look back at her, proceeding to answer her question.

"Thank you, Karina. Glad you and Reiner could make it. And everything is fine with the company, I appreciate it" Grisha said curtly, earning a curt nod and a smile from Karina that was unwavering, not really feeling or wanting to elaborate further and feed her curiosity when it came to the state of the company at that moment. It was the last thought on his mind.

Grisha then proceeded to look up at Reiner when he'd finished his small talk with Karina and saw that he was standing patiently behind his mom, with his hands clasped behind his back, waiting for the interaction between Grisha and his mom to end entirely so he could say something as well.

Reiner noticed that the small talk was over when his mom suddenly turned to him expectantly, so he knew it was his time to speak up. "Reiner, honey," Karina prompted gently, nudging his son to say something too. This coaxed a softer expression from Reiner and a true genuine smile that Grisha could immediately classify as authentic and real. "Happy birthday, sir," Reiner said curtly, looking down at Grisha in his chair.

Much to other people at the table's annoyance, Grisha immediately sensed Reiner's sincerity and his intentions from the moment he walked in. The way he presented himself was entirely different from the rest of the grown ups. He sent Reiner a smile that was full of warmth and appreciation.

"Thank you, Reiner. How have your business trips been?" Grisha said, genuinely trying to strike up a conversation and help Reiner feel more at ease. And it seemed to work because it seemed like he deflated a little with relief washing over his features almost immediately after that.

"They're going very well, sir. I'll be sure to make you proud" Reiner replied, his voice steady as he recalled all the efforts he's been putting into his work. Grisha was aware of how eager he was to gain experience and eventually join the Eldia Group. He knew that Grisha knew he personally didn't want to talk about work, but only when it was at his expense.

He was actually interested in what the younger generation of his family were up to, and he was not disappointed with what he was hearing from Reiner.

The enthusiasm in Reiner's voice did not go unnoticed. In contrast, Grisha could see in the corner of his eye how some of the other relatives were shifting uncomfortably in their seats, while their expressions failed to mask the souring looks on their faces that expressed their distaste.

What originally started as an attempt to make a good impression by Reiner's efforts, that quickly evaporated when his own family members couldn't hide their thinly veiled annoyance. Ignoring their disapproval, Grisha kept a warm look on his face as his focus remained on Reiner with his smile completely unwavering. He didn't give the time of day to the others.

"Well, I don't doubt that. I'm happy to hear it, Reiner. I expect nothing less from you" Grisha said, and a beaming smile that was filled with satisfaction spread across Reiner's face.

He nodded appreciatively at Grisha and then moved his head to glance at his mother who wore a look on her face that was filled with pride. Wrapping things up, Karina put a hand gently on Reiner's back and the two of them began walking away from Grisha, heading towards their respective seats on the long dining table.

Reiner was actually one of the only select few people in your family that you actually got along with. Despite him being a distant relative and there not being any real blood relation, him and Karina were still your family and usually made an appearance at nearly every family gathering like this one.

With Karina, you've had quite your share of disagreements with her over the years, but it was never anything too serious. Just petty stuff, mostly. Like most of the adults in the family, her pride and ego were sky-high, and it led to often clashing with her. She was very opinionated, and her attitude didn't help, but you were used to navigating around that at this point.

Karina inherited a branch in the Eldia Group, Eldia Apparel, and Reiner was now on the path to taking over a position in another branch in the company in the near future. He was one of the oldest amongst the younger generation of the family, and he never made you feel like you were in competition with him, given that the two of you were involved in the same business.

He was actually very supportive, and offered great advice when you needed it the most, whether it was business related or your personal life. You didn't get to talk to him too often, though. His career was taking off after all, and he had his hands full. But whenever the two of you talked, he never disappointed and always reassured you that you could go to him whenever you need it. You were grateful for that, because thos gestures were incredibly scarce these days.

The rest of the family included Gabi and her parents, and she's Reiner's cousin. He was incredibly protective of Gabi, wanting her to have a bright future just like his own. You knew just as well what it meant joining the family business and how much of a challenge it really was to keep your morals and values completely intact.

That was one thing that you and Reiner has agreed with you on in several other occasions and the fact that basic decency is a concept that seemed to be lost on some. Reiner doesn't want that for Gabi and has continued to look after her a lot in that sense. He often tells her that she's too young to worry about business and what goes on in the family and he encourages her to enjoy her childhood for as long as she can. That's exactly what she's been doing.

Gabi was a very energetic girl, and has an incredible sense of identity. She doesn't conform to others' expectations or what the family expects from her, even now, as she's growing up and is told every day what her future will apparently look like. She knows who she wants to be and she aspires to follow Reiner's footsteps, not just in career, but also as a person. He's her role model.

Another important aspect in Gabi and Reiner's lives were the Grice family. They were also distant relatives, but they were especially tight knit with the Brauns, and mostly because of the bond that the younger kids, Gabi and Falco, have. Falco, the youngest Grice, and his older brother Colt were close with Gabi and Reiner, creating a strong connection that has lasted for as long as they can remember.

Gabi and Falco were inseparable. They have known each other since they can remember, joined at the hip. They were the youngest so they always hung out together at family gatherings or just hanging out on normal days. The adults usually just let them be and let them exist in their own world, knowing that they weren't expected to take on any big roles or responsibilities for the family business.

In contrast to Gabi's outgoing nature, Falco was a shy, sweet and timid kid, but she had a knack for bringing out his extroverted side easily. Though the biggest influence in Falco's life was his brother. Colt, as the protective over brother that his, ensures that Falco didn't feel the weight and burden of the family expectations. He lets him be his own person. He was committed to keeping him safe.

And much like Reiner has done for Gabi, Colt took his job very seriously and strives to protect Falco from any negativity, shielding him from anything that might harm him, knowing how unethical, dark, and cutthroat his family and the business in general can be.

It wasn't an environment for a kid, especially his little brother. He was still so young and had so much to live for, still. He deeply cares about him, and Falco loves his brother just as much, if not more.

Colt himself was similar to Reiner in the sense that they both have worked hard to gain their current position within the family business, and to get as much experience as he could. They are both expected to join a branch in the future. Though, Colt also made time for himself and his own hobbies, refusing to let his whole life revolve around the conglomerate and feel like his whole world was centered around that and only that; it wasn't what he wanted.

When things got too hectic, which was too often for his liking, Colt would often try to step back knowing when to create a healthy barrier for him a Falco. It was the only way to survive in this family. While Colt does keep to himself, it wasn't the type of reserved behavior that Floch portrayed every day.

Colt has always been able to maintain his composure and avoided getting tangled in the family's questionable behaviors. He focused on creating a steady influence for his brother, ensuring that Falco would be able to navigate their complicated reality with integrity as he grows up, not letting him be corrupted by it all.

Speaking of which, both the Grice and the rest of the Braun family finally made their appearance for the gathering. As they came down the stairs, the sound of the excited chatter from the kids and the footsteps resonated into the open air, drawing the attention of everyone who was already seated down at the table.

Gabi and Falco were ahead of everyone else in the stairs, leading the way and being completely engrossed in their animated conversation tuning out everyone else, all the while Colt, his parents, and Gabi's parents, were following closely behind. The moment that they came into view and were heard by those that were already there, the ones at the table already reacted in various ways.

Zeke inhaled deeply, exhaling through his nose, and closing his eyes for a brief moment as if he was bracing himself. Yelena remained still, unbothered. Floch, however, couldn't have cared less.

He just wanted this to be over with already. But, Reiner's face lit up at the sight of his cousins, Falco and Gabi, along with the rest of his family arriving. Karina smiled, too, though her expression was a bit more subdued. The reactions of everyone truly highlighted how divided they were as a family.

Colt and Falco were both dressed in smart suits, while Gabi wore a pretty, elegant dress that was adorned with flowers and it seemed to capture the essence of the beautiful sunny day the lunch was taking place in. Their parents were also well-dressed for the occasion, with their outfits reflecting the formality of the event.

Upon hearing the commotion, Grisha turned his head and a soft smile broke across his face. He had a particular fondness for the kids in the family; they were ironically the most level-headed and composed of the bunch, and he has enjoyed seeing them grow up before his eyes.

He observed with warmth and fondness as Gabi and Falco chatted excitedly and happily, with laughter spilling from them like sunlight, still in their own world, ahead of everybody else behind them.

But, they both stopped mid conversation, their eyes locked on Grisha, and bright smiles spread across their faces. Without hesitation, they both rushed over to greet and congratulate their grandfather.

"Happy birthday, Grandpa!" Falco exclaimed, his sweet smile beaming from ear to ear. Gabi echoed his same sentiment, and her eyes sparkled with joy, standing side by side to her cousin. "Happy birthday!" She added, her enthusiasm matching Falco's. They were both incredibly happy to see their grandfather celebrate another year.

Grisha's eyes softened and his heart swelled as he nodded acknowledging the heartfelt greetings from the kids. "Thank you, kids. Go ahead and find your seats" Grisha encouraged, and with excited nods, Gabi and Falco scampered off to navigate around the table.

As they searched for their spots, Gabi spotted Reiner seated nearby and she gasped with excitement. Her gasp caught his attention and his smile widened at the sight of her rushing towards him, leaving Falco momentarily behind. She enveloped her cousin in a warm side hug, given that he was still sitting down and she was standing, and Reiner returned the embrace instantaneously.

He wanted to know how she was doing and what she's been up to recently, so he began to ask all about recent event in her life. She detached halfway to keep the conversation going face to face and to be able to look her in the eye.

"How have you been? How has school been?" Reiner inquired. Gabi brightened and was quick to answer as her cousin as she briefly began to recall how her week at school was.

"It's been pretty good! I was kinda bummed when they separated me and Falco for a project a couple of days ago," She admitted, as her tone dropped a little.

Reiner frowned, understanding her disappointment and how they did everything together, even at school. Helping each other get by. He placed a comforting hand on her arm and proceeded to reassure her and give her some encouraging words.

Their conversation continued until Gabi broke away fully from Reiner, and then turned to her aunt who was waiting to be greeted too. Gabi walked over to Karina and sent her a warm smile.

"Hi, Aunt Karina!" Gabi smiled and leaned down to hug her aunt just like she did with Reiner. She briefly and excitedly began telling her aunt all about her life recently, sharing stories and Karina listened intently and proudly.

Meanwhile, Falco reached Reiner and embraced him too once Gabi left. Reiner leaned into the hug too and was happy to catch up with his younger cousin. Just as Colt approached, Falco stepped back, making his way over to greet his aunt Karina, who was waiting to greet him too. Gabi had wrapped up her chat and was now waiting for Falco to do so too so they could go ahead and sit down together.

Colt reached Reiner just in time to greet each other for a firm handshake that was followed by a quick hug. They stood together, exchanging updates about their lives and careers—a shared interest that allowed their conversation to flow quite easily, since that was one thing that they had in common. Eventually, Reiner settled back into his seat and Colt sat next to him, both of them eager to continue their discussion.

Falco finished talking to his aunt and quickly found his way back to Gabi. The two of them eagerly located their seats next to Karina, sat down, and quickly dove right into a new topic of conversation that kept them both engaged and busy for the rest of the lunch, for the most part.

Before long, their parents joined too after having a brief conversation with Grisha. Colt and Falco's parents took place next to their oldest son, while Gabi's parents settled beside their daughter.

With everyone finally seated, the table buzzed with conversation, at least on one side of it, and the atmosphere was vibrant as everyone awaited for the rest of the family.

Just a couple minutes later, the next arrival to the family gathering made itself known. Grisha turned his head to the side again upon hearing hurried and fast footsteps got closer, and he was greeted by a familiar face that he held in high regard.

It was Erwin Smith, a family friend whose loyalty and trustworthiness stood out to Grisha, which stood out and was hard to find amongst the rest of his relatives sitting at that table.

It was ironic, really, considering Erwin wasn't related by blood at all. Yet, he was always welcomed at these family gatherings, and it was a real testament to the bond that they shared and that Grisha did consider him family in many ways. It was a real testament to the bond they had.

Erwin rushed down the stairs, his movements brisk as he hurriedly donned and fixed his blazer while he adjusted his tie with practiced precision.

His blond hair, was tousled to the side, yet somehow always stylish, gleamed in the sunlight as it rivaled the sun. How tall he was only added to his physical attributes. He reached the last few steps and an apologetic smile crossed his face, and a rare glimpse of his vulnerability softened his usually commanding and serious presence.

"Happy birthday, Grisha" Erwin's voice was warm and it carried a sincere weight behind it, which Grisha appreciated and cherished. Erwin was just happy that he could be present for such a special day.

The blond had always held reliability when Grisha needed it, but Erwin always felt surprised when he got invited to these events, but he always appreciated it deeply when he was. He truly felt part of the family when he did.

Recalling Erwin's entrance, Grisha couldn't help but tease him; "You look very put together today, Erwin," He said, as a playful and joking tone escaped Grisha and his eyes noted the rush the blond's demeanor when he came into the backyard fixing himself up rapidly.

A light chuckle escaped Erwin, as he looked away briefly with slight embarrassment taking over him. He ran a hand through his combed hair that was parted to the side, and Grisha had been used to seeing this familiar gesture in Erwin whenever he was embarrassed, even if he knew that Grisha was just messing with him. He lightly ran his hands over his suit and adjusted his blazer against his shoulders before making eye contact with Grisha and briefly explain himself.

"I'm sorry about that. I've just been so busy increasing your wealth, sir. I lost track of time" Erwin replied, as his gentle, and trademark smile returned to his face. He straightened his posture and met Grisha's gaze with his striking blue eyes that radiated confidence and preparation.

The smile on his face was to reassure Grisha that he didn't mean to arrive so unprepared. Grisha appreciated his honest because he knew that Erwin's usually very, neat, put together and tidy when it came to his appearance.

He knew how dedicated Erwin was, and that he was often getting so engrossed in his work that he tended to forget and neglect minor details and a few things could slip from his mind. Erwin was the CEO of the Eldia Investments branch, and was Grisha's closest confidant in the business world.

Erwin had the commitment, leadership, and intelligence that made him more than suitable for the job, and Grisha trusted him deeply.

He was also your closest friend in the entire family, and you saw Erwin more often than any of your other relatives, aside from Grisha. He also offered to help with the investments of your company whenever you needed it.

He came by your office a lot as well, and he's kept you company when you needed it, and you've done the same for him all these years.

You've known Erwin since you were both kids, and your friendship stretched back to your childhoods. His father is close with Grisha since he even founded and established his company, so you ended up meeting Erwin when you first brought into the family and the both of you were very young.

He's only a couple of years older than you, so the two of you could relate on a lot of things, in just about any topic of conversation. Erwin's father usually only attends these family events every once in a while because of his job outside of the country. You truly consider Erwin was one of the only people you can trust with everything, just like you did with Hange.

Erwin has always been loyal, understanding, and considerate, so that's why Grisha ended up choosing him to be the the director and the CEO of the investments branch because of how calculating and intelligent he is, and also being able to make the hard choices. He's been Grisha's most reliable business partner outside of the family.

"Also, my father wanted me to tell you happy birthday on his behalf," Erwin added, as hie expression suddenly turned serious, but his smile was unwavering. There was a certain gravity to his tone, but the kind that suggested that he understood the importance of family and sometimes there was just no helping these things from happening.

Grisha understood the demands of Erwin's father's job abroad, which often kept him from these gatherings. Even with all of those facts, the connection and the communication between Erwin and his father remained strong which made the distance a lot easier to bear.

"I appreciate that, Erwin. I'll be sure to call him soon and thank him" Grisha responded, and nodded with appreciation. Erwin nodded with a quick and understanding smile, proceeding to move around Grisha to the side of the table where the Braun and Grice families were seated.

He was quickly able to find the nearest seat, which was next to Colt, who noticed his arrival and welcomed Erwin with a nod, and Reiner who smiled as they included Erwin in the ongoing conversation they were having. After that, everything seemed to flow smoothly.

Conversations bubbled up around the table, or at least on one side of it, and the laughter mingled with the gentle rustling of the leaves of leaves in the warm breeze of the day. Yet, as he noticed that more than half of his family had arrived, he let his gaze flicked briefly to the entrance of the backyard and impatience suddenly crossed his features.

There were still a few people that he was still waiting for—a trio that he was very fond of, and, of course, you. He had made it very clear to himself, and would do the same to everyone else, that he wouldn't begin the meal or gather everyone for the family picture without you or them here.

And just as Grisha had been hoping for, the next group of people he had been awaiting could suddenly be heard across the yard, their voices cascading down the stairs as their laughter followed, just like everyone else before them have done. Not only did Grisha recognize that voice instantly, but so did Zeke.

Both turned their heads in unison to see the closest and most tight-knit group of friends that Grisha had ever known making their way towards them. But Zeke had his eyes more on Eren than his friends.

Though Mikasa and Armin weren't related to the family by blood, Grisha treated them with so much fatherly affection, as if they were his own kids. They were just that special to him—and to Eren most of all.

His youngest son, and Zeke's half brother, Eren walked down the stairs with his two best friends, Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert on either side of him. These three have been inseparable and joined at the hip since they could remember, spending almost every moment together.

The trio had been bound by shared experiences and an unbreakable bond. Now, in college, they were navigating through early adulthood together, and their friendship has not wavered once over the years. In fact, it was only getting stronger, blossoming even more with time.

As they descended down the stairs, their presence caught the eye of many that were already in the yard, which elicited a spectrum of reactions similar to the Braun and Grice family. Gabi and Falco them, exchanged glances, their faces lit up momentarily before they quickly returned to their own conversation, lost in their own world. They would greet the trio when the time came.

Colt, Reiner, and Erwin paused mid-conversation, and their smiles brightened as they took in the trio's arrival, pausing their discussion momentarily so they could have a chance to greet the three of them. Even Gabi's parents and Falco's parents acknowledged their arrival but didn't have big reactions, offering subtle nods.

Over the years, the connections in this family faltered, but they were often tempered and varied by degrees of intimacy; some relatives greeted others out of courtesy, shaped by tradition, and others by a true relationship they had with each other. That was just the way it became for years and it just couldn't be helped.

Upon hearing his half-brother's voice, Zeke turned his head, and a rare and almost imperceptible smile creeped onto his face. Yelena, however, remained completely stoic, and simply looked back at them to acknowledged their entrance with a nod.

Zeke had a soft spot for his little brother, and even if Eren didn't always reciprocate the affection and concern that Zeke offered, the eldest Jaeger brother didn't let that bother him and always made sure Eren knew that he was there if he needed support if he needed it.

But Eren could see through Zeke most of the time, recognizing that the words "compassion" and "sincerity" didn't really come with his older brother's description or his behavior. He was certainly aware of how Zeke operated within the family business, knowing full well that with everything Zeke did, there was always an ulterior motive that was veiled behind his charming demeanor. He didn't trust it.

He had never liked Zeke's manipulative and unethical nature, choosing to keep his distance from his brother. Eren understood that Zeke was brother and he usually appreciate that he made efforts at closeness, but he truly felt no desire to create a deeper bond.

Mikasa was incredibly skilled at percieving the darkness that came from Zeke, so she never lets Eren near him, knowing how the Jaeger brother was just sick and twister inside. Eren would rather distance himself from the shadows of his family and the business that came with it, so instead, he's focusing on finishing college alongside Mikasa and Armin, striving to have a normal life with them, and that's it.

As for Floch, this was the only time he had reacted to the appearance of any family members so far. His expression had shifted from the usual deadpan look to one of subtle softness as a flicker of warmth breaking through.

Yet he quickly redirected his gaze, adjusted himself in his seat and retreated into his usual guarded demeanor. Often, it was Eren, Mikasa, and Armin who managed to drew Floch out a little bit, and who he said a word to during these things. Their shared age made it so much easier for them to interact.

Eren, Mikasa, and Armin continued their descent down the stairs, even as many eyes were lingering on them, while many others returned to their conversations.

The three of them were certainly dressed for the occasion, with a blend of elegance and a youthful spirit amongst the trio. Eren's hair has grown out quite a bit, so now he had it slicked back and tied into a man-bun, with a couple rebellious strands falling out artfully arcoss his forehead.

He wore a sharp black suit that complimented his broad physique, a blazer, and a black shirt that was tailored to him perfectly. As he came down, the fastened one of his buttons on his blazer, tying his whole outfit together, while wearing polished dress shoes that completed his ensemble perfectly.

From the moment you met Eren as a boy, his fiery personality had been unmistakable. He was never afraid to speak his mind, even more as a kid which was a trait that only became more pronounced and prominent with age.

Watching him grow up, you witnessed how he befriended Armin, a boy with a polar opposite of a personality than him. He became an anchor for Eren's emotional intensity since they were children.

And then came Mikasa, and together, they formed a trio—a perfect blend of rationality, emotions, and strength. The trio mended each other's messes, always being there for another throughout their childhood and into adulthood.

Though it was often Armin and Mikasa who helped clean up Eren's messes and impulsive mistakes, those slip-ups never once marred or caused a dent in their friendship. Eren is just someone who's always known what he wanted, his opinions set in stone, and unwavering in the face of opposition. Nobody could ever change them, and no one ever tried to.

This is exactly why Eren confided in you when he told you that never wanted to partake in the business of the Eldia Group. There were already plenty of successors within the family who were on the road to inherit a position, and Eren just didn't see himself in that kind of life. He has wanted to cut out his own path and do something for himself. That's why he was working hard at college to make that happen, and that journey was a means to that end.

He had expressed to Grisha multiple times that he really wanted a normal life with his best friends. Understanding Eren's resolve and knowing he wouldn't change his mind, Grisha agreed to support whatever his son's dreams were and what he wish to pursue.

The choice to join the family business was a personal one, and Eren chose that path for himself. Besides, he was fully aware that Zeke would try to rope Eren into his ambitions—and that was something that Eren was trying desperately trying to avoid.

Armin, who was walking beside Eren, wore a light grey smart suit that complemented his features, his baby blue eyes shimmering in the sunlight, mirroring the bright smile that was gracing his face as he engaged in a conversation with his friends.

He actually adopted a new hairstyle recently—a long undercut with medium-length bangs that fell just below his eyebrows, giving him a sophisticated air that matched his calm demeanor.

With the trio, you felt a close bond with Armin. Ever since he was little, you enjoyed conversations with him at gatherings, reveling in his insightful thoughts and nature, how smart he was, and how he had so much to talk about so you and him never had a dull conversation.

Armin was the sweetest person you know, given that radiated so much compassion, understanding, and forgiveness for everyone around him. You met him as a small boy that hung around Eren every day and he hasn't changed one bit since then.

It was so heartwarming to see, and you enjoyed seeing them regularly, and even if you didn't see them at gatherings sometimes, you made the time to make plans with them separately whenever your schedule aligned with theirs.

You watched him grow up from a shy and timid boy, into the insightful man that he was now, always seeking comfort in your presence when he faced emotional challenges. Your connection with Armin deepened as you became a big source of support for him, easing his worries and helping him navigate the intricacies of everyday life. He would be forever grateful for that.

Armin has always been more strong emotionally than physically, so he was an easy target sometimes in his early years at school. When neither Eren and Mikasa were around when they were kids, he always came to you and you never once hesitated to take the ease of his emotional wounds on your back, and after that, it became a routine of him always seeking comfort from you, coming to you when he needed to talk and relieve his anxious thoughts. It was how you ended up growing a soft sport for him.

Now that he was an adult, the advice he sought usually shifted away from the academic challenges, and more towards the realities of life after college. Despite his intelligence and ability to succeed easily on his own, he still recognized your success and and he often turned to you for guidance on entering the workplace and working his way up from the bottom.

When you did share everything you knew, he always passed on that information to his friends and all three of them benefited from what knowledge you had to pass on.

Whenever you shared stories about your job, Armin was always eager to listen and to ask how he could helo relieve the pressure you felt every day at work, even with his own busy schedule at college that took up most of his time nowadays. It warmed your heart when he did, trying to help in any way he could. He was truly a gem of a person.

As for Mikasa, her transformation was striking. Her hair used to be up to her shoulders, but now she cut her hair into a style far shorter than she had before. All three of them kind of wanted to reinvent themselves for college right after they left high school, so now her dark onyx hair was styled into a long-styled pixie cut that framed her face perfectly and highlighted all of her pictures.

She also kept the bangs that lightly fell over her face. For the occasion she was dressed in a stunning black power suit that highlighted her athletic build, and she moved with confidence as her heels clicked lightly against the stairs as she walked down alongside her friends.

You and Mikasa actually had a lot in common. The two of you had a bit of a tough past that brought the two of you much closer. You both experienced significant challenges in your life and you found solace in the understanding that blossomed between the two of you.

Just like you did, when she was young, Mikasa was taken in by Grisha and into the family after she became an orphan with nowhere to go or a true place to call home. That's why the two of you found an understanding with each other in terms of upbringing.

You always offered to help if there was anything she needed, whether it was for school, her personal life, and she did the same with you. Even if she comes across as reserved most of the time, you've come to know her as the sweet girl that she is.

Her warmth as a person shone through the moment you noticed how attached she was to Eren and how defensive she was when it came to protecting him and Armin, becoming fiercely loyal to them as they continue to venture into the world of adulthood.

It felt like it was just yesterday when Grisha introduced you to a much younger Mikasa, knowing that the two of you had similar pasts. There was was an instant connection and a solidified friendship after that, and it only grew deeper over time.

You always cherished the conversations and the moments that you spent with her, always talking to her, making plans, and hanging out with her was never dull. You always found joy in that.

Watching Mikasa grow up from the shy girl that she used to be, into the strong woman that she had become after she met Eren and Armin, filled you with pride. The trio—Eren, Mikasa, and Armin, were not adults, and you couldn't help but marvel at how much they've grown up and matured.

They were each other's anchors. Because they're in college, she and Armin always help Eren study for a quiz on a class that he's struggling with or she gives him her notes when he needs them.

Or even as kids, when she went wherever he went. She is always concerned for Eren and Armin, and is never absent when they need help. Their friendship that had an unbreakable bond.

Just as Reiner and Colt served as role models for Gabi and Falco, you had become a guiding figure for Eren, Mikasa, and Armin. Although their own aspirations differed from yours, they truly did admire your success and sought out for your advice, and you always welcomed them with open arms.

To say that you loved and cared for this trio was an understatement; their friendship and their company has brought so much warmth into your life, and a connection that felt timeless to you from all of the memories you had with them.

Eventually, the three of them finished making their way down the stairs, and they all rushed to get to Grisha once they stopped their conversation and made direct eye-contact with Grisha, who was already looking at them with a fond smile on his face.

When they reached him, Eren stepped forward, with his two best friends right behind him and stood in front of his father. "Happy birthday, Dad!" Eren exclaimed, as his voice rang with genuine warmth and a genuine smile came upon his lips.

Eren's emerald eyes sparkled with happiness upon seeing his dad again after being away at college for so many months now. There was a certain brightness in his gaze that was a direct reflection of the affection that he held for his dad.

Grisha smiled at his son, and then noticed Mikasa's body language suggested that she wanted to speak next to he turned his head to face her. Her demeanor was steady, yet, it was softened by a rare smile on her face. "Happy birthday, Grisha," She said, and her voice was laced with sincerity that resonated with him deeply.

He felt a fondness inside him, seeing how much she and the boys have grown up already. She deeply cared for Grisha, and she just as much loyalty and gratefulness towards him as she did for her best friends. They all had such bright futures ahead of them.

Armin was next up, and as he lightly adjusted his blazer, Grisha turned his head again to look at the young blond and could tell that as always, there was a slight hint of nervous, yet enthusiastic energy that he wanted to transmit through his words.

"Yeah, happy birthday, Mr. Jaeger! I hope this year brings you everything you wish for" Armin added to his friends' words, his baby blue eyes sparkling with warmth and hope. As it always did, Armin's authenticity and ingenuity shone through his words, as it always did.

Once they all finished speaking and wishing him well, Grisha's expression softened as he looked at the trio. A smile as quick to break across his face as he replied to all three at once; "Thank you, you three. It means a lot to me that you were able to make it," He replied, his voice full of gratitude at their appearance.

Eren, Mikasa, and Armin exchanged glances with each other as smiles graced their faces contently. They were happy to be here just as much. It was rare these days that they had time to attend family events, and as separated and divided as they tended to be.

Suddenly, the trio and Grisha suddenly heard a sigh and a chair move against the grass. The four of them, as well as Yelena and Floch, turned their heads to the side to see that Zeke was standing up and fixing his suit as he got to his feet. They all looked at quizzically, and even more when he started walking away from the table and towards a corner of the yard, but not before giving Eren a pointed look.

Eren raised an eyebrow with suspicion as he noticed the look his older brother gave him, and it didn't go unnoticed by Mikasa or Armin, who Eren looked back at and they were both exchanging worried glances. Grisha had leaned back in his chair and taking glances at Zeke who was standing by himself at the end of the yard.

Somehow, Eren knew exactly what this was about. He closed his eyes shut for a second and exhaled, knowing that Zeke wouldn't leave this alone until he went over and talked to him.

Begrudgingly, Eren turned on his heel and began to walk over to approach his brother, as Armin and Mikasa looked back at Eren and watched him leave, and then looked at each other with concern, having a silent conversation with each other.

Meanwhile, as Eren finally got to Zeke, the younger Jaeger brother already had something loaded up to say. Zeke did this every single time and he was getting tired of it. He knew exactly what his older brother wanted to talk about, because it's happened before.

"Could you spend at least one family gathering looking without calling me over to speak privately? At least make it look like you're trying to enjoy yourself. It seems like that's a lost concept on you" Eren said as he crossed his arms and his eyes narrowed at his brother. "I know you and dad have a rocky relationship, but it's his birthday, so you could at least pretend," Eren continued, noticing his brother's silence.

It only confused and irritated Eren more seeing a subtle smirk come upon Zeke's face, with his eyes cool and calculated. He wasn't taking him seriously at all. "That would accomplish nothing. I'm not the only one who doesn't enjoy these gatherings, and finds them... rather tedious," Zeke said as his voice dripped with sarcasm. Eren rolled his eyes and lifted his hand to pinch the bridge of his nose.

"No, not really. I'm pretty sure that's just you and your little following" Eren said as he gestured with his head to Floch and Yelena. "You really think you're better than everybody else because of your position in dad's company and because you keep your distance? Being part of this family means showing up for dad, and not just brood by yourself. but you just wouldn't understand that, would you?" Eren said as his voice turned much more serious.

Zeke only shrugged and exhaled through his nose, his expression becoming more nonchalant. "I think it's pretty quaint how you think things are that simple, Eren," He said, and Eren uncrossed his arms, letting them drop to his sides. It felt like he was talking to a wall.

"It is that simple. This family is already divided enough as it is. You can't be there for anyone other than yourself," Eren said as he clenched his jaw, feeling his frustration and irritation flare.

That seemed to bother Zeke the most. His gaze sharpened and his voice lowered, and it looks like Eren's voice struck a nerve. "You really think that idealism will change the way this family operates, Eren? You're so focused on going off on your own and this concept of 'family' that you'll be disappointed when the truth comes to light. Dad isn't a saint, and you know it," Zeke glowered and Eren's frustration with his brother kept growing with every word he said.

"Yeah, and neither are you. I don't care about what dad has or hasn't done. I'm not like you, and I'm done trying to tell you that I want to be different and make my own choices. You can't make me be part of your twisted business. I'm not following your footsteps, get that through your head," Eren said a lot louder, but making sure to keep his voice leveled so that everyone by the table couldn't hear. His patience was running low and he was fed up with this.

Zeke sighed and straightened his posture, crossing his arms and seriousness took over his previous tone of sarcasm. "Then prove it. Stop clinging onto these childish notions and join me. When will you do it? It's a harsh world out there, you're almost done with college and this sentiment won't shield you from reality. Unless you listen to what I'm saying" Zeke said, and Eren's eyes hardened even further.

And suddenly he realized that he didn't want to stand here anymore and be forced to listen to his any longer. It was a waste of his time. This is exactly why Eren refused to get mingled with Zeke.

Eren exhaled, holding eye contact with Zeke as his eyes remained neutral. The resolve in his gaze hardened, though. "Then, that's my problem. I'll face that reality on my own terms. Don't ever expect me to ever join you or agree on your way of thinking," Eren concluded and with that, he turned and headed back to the table, leaving Zeke to digest his words, but once again, they fell on deaf ears.

When Zeke was left by himself, and he watched his brother go, there was a certain mix of amusement that was mixed with annoyance at the same time that was coming across his face.

It was the same dance every time that the two brothers always had, that had a blend of a concept that neither of them could comprehend. But the thing is that Eren knew perfectly well what his brother was up to, but it was Zeke that didn't seem to get it through his head. It would be long before he ever decided to let it go.

When Eren rejoined with his friends, leaving Zeke behind, his shift in demeanor was palpable. He came back completely different than when he left, so Mikasa and Armin exchanged worried glances, noticing how Eren's expression had darkened and a storm was brewing underneath his usual vibrant and emerald eyes.

Mikasa's gaze suddenly flickered to Zeke who was now dismissively coming back to his seat with an air of nonchalance that was very suspicious to Mikasa. How come he was coming back as if nothing happened and Eren looked visibly shaken?

Her neutral expression had suddenly morphed into something much more intense, a fiery glare aimed at Zeke. Feeling eyes on him, Zeke looked up and met her gaze with an indifferent smirk as the corner of his mouth began to twitch and feigned innocence, adding to her fury.

There was definitely a weird feeling of tension that was hanging in the air as he turned around, leaving Mikasa simmering with confusion. With a sigh, Mikasa shifted her focus back to Eren who had just finished talking to Armin, who was checking on him.

Her expression softened, and she reached out, placing a hand on his arm. "Are you okay?" Mikasa asked quietly, as her voice remained low, yet laced with concern. Eren caught her gaze and his eyes fleeted for a moment, feeling the weight of his thoughts pressing against him. He closed his eyes briefly and nodded silently in affirmation.

Mikasa listened to his response and understood. Her intuition told her to listen to him and trust his confirmation, but she was still unsure. Her mind was still worrying for him. What did the two of them talk about back there? Her hand slipped from his arm and her worry continued to linger. She couldn't shake the feeling that something unsettling had transpired between the two brothers.

She pulled her hands to intertwine in front of her, as she tried her best to shield Eren from whatever turmoil was brewing inside of him. Mikasa could tell that he was forcing back the lightness back into his demeanor, noticing that the weight of the conversation must still be heavy and very much unresolved. It was palpable.

Mikasa wasn't the only one who could sense something was wrong with Eren. Armin, sensing that the atmosphere had changed even after he'd briefly asked his best friend if he was okay, leaned in slightly as his brows furrowed with concern. "Eren, are you sure you're okay?" His bright blue eyes searched Eren's face for reassurance to know that he was okay.

Eren turned his head slightly to look at Armin and sent him a gentle smile, that looked incredibly practiced to Armin, yet the blond could see that a flicker of his usual spirit was returning in that very same smile. Eren took a deep breath and shook off the shadows that lingered over his conversation with Zeke.

"Yeah, I'm good. Promise" Eren said, and Armin could see that the spark in Eren's eyes was returning again, so that was reassuring. Though, the words were both true and hollow at the same time.

He did try to immerse himself in the moment all over again, to embrace the laughter, the chatter, and the environent in general coming from the rest of his family, but there was still something that was still nagging at him and nestling in his his chest constantly.

He knew that what Zeke said was lingering a lot longer than he wanted to admit, trying to push aside the reminders of the uneasiness that settled inside him, along with the complexity of the relationships in his own family. Like he said before, this family was already divided enough, and this is the last thing anyone needed.

He tried to push it aside, as he always did, because Mikasa and Armin had no idea that this time the weight of the conversation with his brother was lingering inside of him, even if he reassured them both that he was fine. He could feel that something was wrong and that conversation with Zeke was just the start of it.

What made Eren finally focus was when him, his friends, and everyone else hear an unfamiliar voice coming from across they all turned their heads and saw a man that was holding up a camera. "Alright, everyone's here? Are we ready to take the pictures?" The man who was the photographer for the event, and that usually took the annual family portrait, asked out loud for everyone.

Everybody looked up and once the photographer voiced out his question, they all started to look amongst each other to see if anyone was missing. The only one who noticed who was quick to point out who was missing, was Grisha. You were missing. Where were you?

"We can't take it yet. Y/n's not here yet" Grisha suddenly pointed out, and as soon as he did, a look of recognition crossed the faces of many across the table. Some cared more than others. Armin was the first one to voice out his concerns as to why you hadn't arrived.

"Is she okay? Why isn't she here?" Armin said, looking between Grisha and then back to Eren and Mikasa, who were quick to mirror his own expression. He voice out what the two of them were thinking. Upon realizing that they were about to take the picture, others began to show concern as well clearly in their facial expressions.

Erwin suddenly looked very worried, and then looked at Reiner who shared the look he had on his face. Others, like Karina, Floch, and many others at the table weren't really paying attention and were just waiting for the picture to be taken regardless of who was present or not. However, Gabi and Falco were still distracted but were suddenly quick to notice that the ambiance around them went silent all of a sudden. They were incredibly confused now.

Grisha simply shrugged at Armin's question, silently signaling that he didn't know why you were late to the gathering, but he would insist on you being here before they take it. But, obviously, there were others that just enjoyed and going against the flow. Like Zeke.

"Oh, I don't think she would mind. She wouldn't want us to delay this any longer, would she?" Zeke suddenly piped up as he began to stand up, gesturing with a flick of his head for Yelena and Floch to stand up too. The trio and Grisha looked at Zeke with indecipherable looks on their faces, watching the eldest Jaeger brother take charge.

Following after Zeke, Yelena stood up more swiftly than the redhead, because Floch heard that he had to stand up, lightly rolled his eyes, but stood up anyway. The family watched in silence as the three of them began to stand up and Zeke began to lead them to the area where the family picture was usually taken.

Mikasa's glare returned the moment Zeke opened his mouth and said those words. Her sharp gaze never left him and her eyes followed him until the three of them reached the photo area.

Eren was watching with pure disbelief as his wide eyes followed Zeke's every move and traveled from his older brother, down to his dad, and his expression asked for answers and what his father would do about that. They couldn't just take the picture without you. They could wait a couple more minutes, right? You were part of the family.

Grisha looked up to make eye contact with Eren, who was looking at him expectantly, and then turned his head to the side to see that Erwin, along with Reiner were looking at him too to see if they would go along with Zeke or stay where they were.

But if he was being honest, Grisha was getting too old to be fighting against Zeke and try to stop him from stunts like this. He was a grown man, and at this point, it made no sense in trying to change him.

Grisha would go ahead and set the family up for the picture now, and he would tell the photographer to wait a couple minutes while everyone was in position, giving you more time to get here.

With a sigh, he raised his free hand that wasn't holding his cand closed his eyes shut while pinching the bridge of his nose, pushing his glasses up a bit. He exhaled and dropped his hand, having made his decision on what they were going to do.

It had to be this way, because he had no intentions on creating conflict with Zeke, especially on his birthday. It was just meaningless. Zeke wasn't subtle about it at all, the way he used this attempts to make you feel like you were never really part of the family. And this was one of those attempts.

With a deep exhale, Grisha opened his eyes. "Okay, fine. Everybody up, get into position" He said, and Eren's eyes almost bugged out of his head, while Mikasa and Armin's eyes widened.

Erwin and Reiner gave each other confused glances, but hesitantly, began to stand up. As for the rest of the family, they did as told and Gabi's parents gathered their daughter, while Falco and Colt's parents gathered their sons. It was very awkward how to hear just chairs scraping against the grass and watching everyone just walked over to the photo area without a single word.

Eren, Mikasa, and Armin were still watching in utter disbelief. They couldn't believe they were doing the picture without you. You were just as part of it as anybody else, blood-related or not. Eren briefly turned his head and saw how Zeke was watching the family arrange themselves in their usual position with a smug look on his face. It made Eren's blood boil. He did it on purpose, he's hoping you don't show up in the next couple minutes and he's trying to speed it up.

As Eren seemed to be frozen, apalled by his brother's intentions, Mikasa and Armin seemed to be working on autopilot and were quick to leave Eren's side and stand on either side of Grisha, beginning to help him stand up from his seat, being careful to help him stand up and stabilize himself to be able to walk with his cane over to his usual spot in the family picture, in the center of the family.

But as Eren watched his friends begin to help Grisha stand up, and then the three of them start to walk over to their respective places, that's when his mind snapped out of it and he blinked, coming back to reality. He looked at Zeke one last time, trying not to let it affect him how relaxed and calm he looked standing in his spot for the picture. Eren huffed and decided that there was no helping it.

He began to walk over and tried to find his space in the picture, which thankfully was nowhere near Zeke. He kept hoping in his mind that you would show up and that smug smile on his brother's face would be wiped off. Most of the family was arranged in their usual spots.

The Grice's were one one edge, with Falco in the middle, and his parents and Colt standing behind him. The setup was similar for the Braun's. Karina, Reiner, and Gabi's parents were standing behind her, while stood in front of them since she was the shortest.

Then there was a gap between the Braun's and Zeke where you were supposed to go, and after that, Zeke, Yelena, and Floch were standing side by side. As for Grisha, there was a chair set up right in front of the gap where you were supposed to be standing, so you were supposed to be standing right behind Grisha.

And next to him, were the trio. Mikasa and Armin were kneeling side bye side on one side of Grisha, while Eren was taking a knee on the other side of his father. As for Erwin, he was taking a knee right next to Eren, since he was one of the tallest, just like Eren, and they decided to stay on the ground for the picture. So now, there were two people taking a knee on either side of Grisha.

Now, they were all ready take a picture, but your absence was still very noticeable. And as Grisha had told the photographer on the way to his seat for the picture, they would wait a couple more minutes for you to give you one last moment to arrive. He wanted you to be a part of this picture, and you deserved to be. He'd continued waiting.

Though, he couldn't help but wonder and voice his thoughts out loud. "God...where is she?" Grisha said as he kept his eyes trained on the stairway that led to the backyard, hoping you'd come in through the entrance any second. Many people heard Grisha's words, but Erwin was the only one who felt brave enough to say something.

"She must be caught up at work. I'm sure she'll be here soon," Erwin said as he kept his eyes on the entrance too, hoping you'd arrive at any second now. He was trying his best to give you the benefit of the doubt throughout this whole thing. But, it really didn't help that now that Erwin voiced his thoughts, other family members felt the need to do it too. That was a mistake on his behalf.

And to make matters worse, it was Karina who thought it'd be appropriate to speak up and side with Zeke. "Grisha, the whole family's here anyway. Let's just take the photo" She said, as she looked down at Grisha, who was sitting down in his seat, feeling multiple eyes on him, but it didn't bother him in the slightest.

He wasn't changing his mind, and if he had to pay the photographer to stay for longer, he wouldn't mind doing that either. You were going to be in this picture and that was the end of it, no matter how much the rest of his family members attempted to erase you off the family.

Nobody noticed, but Zeke nudged Yelena a bit, and when she looked up at him, startled a bit, she noticed that he was giving her pointed looks and gestured discreetly with his eyes down to his father, she immediately got the picture and understood what she had to do.

She nodded and hesitantly cleared her throat as she slightly leaned down. "Sir, if I may speak freely, they're right. There isn't much time left to take it," Yelena said, and straightened up again in her place, looking up at Zeke and saw that he gave her a silent nod of approval. Yelena nodded, and looked ahead again, keeping her composure.

Grisha lightly lifted his cane up and down on the grass a couple times, suddenly feeling exasperated at the attempts his family were taking to try and hurry to exclude you from the picture. But they should know that nothing they could try would sway him.

"Forget it. I'm not taking any pictures without y/n. And that's final" Grisha said, remaining firm in his seat, and a look of victory suddenly crossed Eren's face as he noticed that Zeke couldn't hide his annoyance upon hearing his father's words. The brunette turned to look to his friends, and they were quick to match his look of satisfaction. It was really gratifying to see, honestly.

But just as many in the family were hoping, and others were not, the sudden sound of heels hurriedly clicking against the stairway down to the backyward, followed by a very familiar a voice, everyone turned their heads to see that you had finally made it. You had made your way down the stairs and were jogging as fast as you can across the grass to greet your family members that were all looking at you.

"I'm so sorry, my meeting ran late and I got here as fast as I could," You said, slightly out of breath, as you panted and put a hand over your chest. Your eyes trailed across your family and the reactions were rather scattered. You didn't blame them, though. You must've made them wait a long time, and even more so if they were already positioned to take the picture. "Wow, you guys are all here," You said in disbelief they were all able to come., yet apologetic as well.

When you made eye contact with the trio you loved so dearly, kneeling down next to Grisha, you sent them a small wave with a gentle smile, and they waved back a you simultaneously, with smiles rivaling to yours on their faces. You were always so happy to see them, and you couldn't wait to catch up.

Though, Eren looked especially happy today, there was a look in his face you couldn't place. It was smug, almost? Yet relieved to see you at the same time. It was confusing. Mikasa and Armin had those sweet and gentle smile as they always did, making your heart fill with warmth. Your eyes then moved onto Erwin.

As always, whenever you saw him, he always sent you a warm smile that you couldn't help but reciprocate. You smiled back and lightly waved at him, too. His striking blue eyes regarded you softly, which you happily returned right back to him.

When you looked at Grisha and saw that the look on his face was neutral, you looked deeper and saw that there was a light smile tugging on his lips. You knew that he was glad to see you, too. You sent him a gentle smile too, but that smile was wiped off when you looked up and saw the looks on the other half of your family.

Seeing them all look at you like they were made you want to shrink back a little in shame. You sent them all apologetic smiles, but unlike your other relatives, they didn't reciprocate it. The only ones who did, trying to reassure you in their own way that its okay if you were a bit late and that all that mattered was that you were here now, were Reiner and Colt. You sent them appreciative looks back to them.

"Grisha's been waiting for you," Karina suddenly pipe up, and you turned your head to look at her, seeing that she was giving you a subtle yet judgemental look. You tried to not let the look on her face bother you, even if you knew you were late and she and everyone else had a right to be upset over it. You let out a nervous laugh and ran a hand back through your hair, which only added to your nerves.

Wanting to get this over with already, and knowing he wasn't able to accelerate the picture taken, Zeke thought that they just might as well get it over with and stop the chit chat. He rolled his eyes and lightly step to the side, which prompted Yelena and Floch to move to the side too, giving you more space in the gap between him and Karina.

"Y/n, come stand over here, " Zeke said as the disinterest and subtle defeat laced his voice became prominent, and after hearing it, you were quick to break out of your trance to listen to what he said. A nervous smile broke through your lips and quickly began to walk across the grass, passing through a couple family members and then finally making it to your place in the family picture.

Now it was complete, Grisha thought to himself. Everybody's here now and they could take the picture. When you reached your place between Zeke and Karina, before the photographer started taking the picturres you briefly leaned down to say a couple things to Grisha, so you were right next to his head, quickly hoping to say what you wanted to say since you arrived and noticed his demeanor.

"Why the long face? Today's supposed to be special," You whispered lightly, keeping the conversation between you and him. He scoffed lightly, making your smile grow as you listened intently for his reply.

"Why else? They're all just celebrating me getting old. You should've seen the tantrums these people can throw," Grisha said, loudly enough for you to hear, making your eyebrows rise in surprise. Though, it wasn't completely shocking to you.

You could definitely see that. You've been around long enough to witness it multiple times. "Come on, can you at least smile for the picture?" You teased Grisha playfully, watching as he kept his gaze straight ahead and your eyes briefly trailed around everyone else, and they were all keeping their gazes forward, waiting for the cues of the photographer as they waited for pictures to be taken.

"No promises," Grisha said, and you smiled at his response, leaning away and straightening up again in your designated place. Once you straightened up and heard the photographer announce to everyone to smile, everyone did as told, and before long, all that was heard was the sound of the camera clicking along with rustling of the leaves.

Everyone was smiling at the camera, silent, doing their part, and you were left to wonder about what your role was in this family. You wondered that all the time. It was a recurring thought you had regularly whenever you spent time with your relatives. Every second you spent in their presence, it was the only thing you could think about.

You weren't related to anyone here, and your family never let you forget it. And it wasn't new for you to feel like they were in cahoots to get rid of you, even if Grisha tried his best to prevent it. Many have made you feel like you're a virus to them, a nuisance.

But they never expressed it directly, and their actions to make you feel that way were expertly concealed. Their endlessly, practiced, and sickly smiles for the cameras were their ultimate weapons. And it's always felt like there was resentment behind everything they said to you, but you've noticed that only the ones with something to gain were the ones who made it even more obvious than others.

Though, you've learned to ignore and supress it because you couldn't possibly be bothered to put energy into finding ways to go against them a fight back, when you had much more important things to worry about. But, the way you dismissed them seemed to angered them more, so you realized that there was just no winning with them.

For years, many of your relatives, especially the adults who were leaders of their own branches, just like you, wondered who would claim the throne to the Eldia Group? Who would have it all?

It was no secret that Grisha was planning to retire eventually, which meant that the adults were trying to get on his good side and see who would gain his inheritance that was worth more than any of them could imagine. Grisha has made it clear that only one person in the family would recieve it and would not split it, given that they lost that privilege a long time ago.

That only caused more separation amongst his own relatives. Grisha knew that they would either destroy themselves trying to fake who they want to be to get that reward, or end up destroying someone else in the process. He's only sat back and watched it unfold.

The only answer to that question would end the war amongst the family, that has divided it for personal gain for as long as it has, but unfortunately, once it ends, an entirely new one will start. A war for greed, money, resentment, and revenge. No one would be ready for it, no matter how much they try to convince themselves otherwise.
