I waited on the front steps for dad after school, it brought me back to the old glory days when he still used to work at the only place in the world that felt like a real home to me.
Dad finally stepped out of his black vehicle, talking to his driver for a few moments before racing up the steps to greet me.
"How was school Fey?" My father asked a little too enthusiastically. I frowned, pulling my bag with me as I stood up to give my dad a quick hug. I was now growing a little impatient to see Ahk and everyone now.
"It was boring," I deadpanned with a roll of my brown eyes. "But you say that every single time!" Dad complains as I almost walk into the glass of the revolving doors but somehow manage to save myself. I smile back at my father, "Nothing changes."
I followed my Dad quickly, my backpack whipping my back as I walked. "Oh no." Panic set through me as soon as I saw the renovation signs. This couldn't be good.
Dr. McPhee folded his arms over his chest. "Hello. Excuse me. Unauthorised personal. Oh it's our very own Mr success story, and his history loving teenage daughter. Come for one of your astound tours, I haven't seen you in months Mr. Daley."
When I had finally stood still in the museum, when I saw those wooden boxes containing my friends, I panicked. These people were my family, I would do anything to protect them and seeing them like this I felt incredibly helpless knowing that I couldn't do anything.
"Yeah, I've been busy." My dad quickly replied. I rolled my eyes gently.
"Dr. McPhee what's happening I was only gone a week." It was clear even to myself that I was panicking, you could hear it as clear as gold in my voice. Since my dad had left Dr McPhee was somehow kind enough to let me stay after hours, although I don't know why or how he trusted me enough.
"Progress, Ancient Egyptian history lover. Well, that's what they tell me, Freya. The future! Beholdβ," Dr McPhee put down his brief case and strolled over to what I am guessing a prototype. "The Museum of Natural History version 2.0." Dr McPhee leant down to press a button on the hexagon shaped weird thing and a humming sound brought it to life.
The sound of galloping horses filled my ear drums and I quickly searched by brain of who it could be and then I realised of course, it was Teddy.
Teddy was mounted on his horse, Texas as he fiddled with his reins. "Welcome to the Museum of Natural History; where history comes to life. Step up ask your question, then let the next little boy or girl have their turn." I let a soft whisper escape my lips. I knew what was happening they were replacing the odd exhibits with these new technologies.
Dr McPhee turned to my dad as my father shifted his footing. "Okay. Um. Where were you born?"
The electronically Teddy spoke right away. "Right here in New York City on 20th street, October 27th the year of our lord 1858β," suddenly all the words were fast forward and I realised that Dr McPhee was pressing buttons again then it turned of.
"History, History. Learning, learning. Changing America one child at a time." Then he shrugged his shoulders and walked towards his leather brief case.
Then before I could speak Dad had already spoke up. "So you're adding new stuff?"
"Not adding, Mr Daley. Replacing the old exhibits." I bit my lip, this was far, far worse than I expected. It was like watching Ahk die a hundred times over.
"Where are they going." I quickly piped in.
"Away! We're getting rid of all this junk. The dioramas, the wax works, even some of the shabbier animalsβ," Dr McPhee picks up Dexter and gazing at him like he was some worthless piece of rubbish. "Like this scrawny little monkey."
My father stepped closer, " You should be careful he is a capuchin."
"So a monkey." The Doctor answers simply, obviously not caring.
"Dr McPhee he's a rare breed. You know a capuchin monkey?" I answer quickly.
"He's a monkey and why would you need to be specific. Anyway when your throwing something away, History lover, you don't need the Latin name." I scoffed at the name, I got his point. There was no need to remind me.
"Are you throwing them away or are you moving them?" Dad asks desperately, it shocked me to see that he still cared about this place and my friends.
"What aRe yOu the primate carnage police?! Let it go baby." Dr McPhee exaggerates if he knew the truth, I think he'd care.
"Who's idea was this?" I whisper gently.
"Me of course, I'm in charge," The Museum director shrugs a bit, "the board, mainly the board. Anyway why do you care so much kid. Teenagers like you don't give a damn about this place after what, ten years old?"
I swallow gently, trying to find the words. "Well I grew up in New York and this place means a lot to people. People love it here, they love this stuff."
Dr McPhee choked back a laugh, he pierced his lips in a firm line. He lowers his eyes a little and uses his fingers to make quotation marks, "People love what is next, Kid.... but your father should know that he left."
The man wasn't lying. "My situation changed. My business took offβ," Dr McPhee cuts my dad off. Oh and hey dad you forgot to mention that you left your friends to suffer without you.
"Yeah so would I, if I was a night guard." The director replies with a small smile.
"Where are they going?" I asked quickly giving Dr McPhee puppy dog eyes.
The man sighs, "Deep storage the federal archives."
"Where is that?" My father asks quickly.
"The Smithsonian, Washington D.C." Dr McPhee replies quickly, growing impatient, the poor man must of just wanted to go home.
"There must be something we can do?" I ask, to them both.
"Sorry kid." The director replies simply. "It's done. They leave tomorrow morning. It's over, History Lover." I could feel the tears brimming in my eyes as Dr McPhee left. "No.." I quickly sigh, this couldn't be the end.
Dad wraps his arms around me gently, "I'll call the board in the morning, Fey." I nod simply, but I knew my dad couldn't stop this. I knew things like this couldn't be stopped. I was old enough to understand that, I wasn't little anymore.
I sit by Rexy engulfed in my thoughts, as I patiently wait for the sun to go down. I only turn when I feel a soft, cold air at my neck.
"Hey Rexy!" I say with a smile my hand patting his rough nose. Rexy wags his tail like a puppy as my dad whips out a dog tug-a-war rope and hands it to me.
"You want it bud! Come and get it!" I say as Rexy bites the end of the rope, throwing me around like a weightless paper bag as my shoes skid on the slippery floors.
"Oh no. Don't. Rexy..!" Then I was flung in the air somehow landing on some sort of mattress.
Then the grates come flying off spinning in the air and landing on the floor.
I smiled, giving a hand to Sacagawea as I help her out of her grate. She smiles and gives me a gentle, loving hug. Sometimes I felt like Sacagawea was more of a mother than my actual mother. "I've missed you Freya." She replies in her gentle and soothing voice.
"I missed you too." Sacagawea takes my arm in here as we both walk over to Teddy.
"I think you've grown a little taller, young lady!" Teddy says with a smile, leaning down on Texas. "And look you've dragged your fatherβ Lawrence! Good to see you lad."
"The guardian of the Tablet has returned!" Ahkmenrah says with a loud voice to gain my attention, "She even dragged the guardian of Brooklyn as well."
"Ahk!" I turn and smile. Every time I see Ahkmenrah I think I get happier and happier each time I see him. I didn't even know it but I ran towards him at a blinding speed, I think it was the fasted I had ever ran. Ahkmenrah somehow catches me and stumbles backwards.
I didn't even hear my father say to Teddy, "Ugh. I never get a hug like that anymore." Teddy laughs loudly but I didn't hear what he said.
I had completely forgotten about last night. I was happy now that I was finally with him. "I missed you very much Rey. I think that was the longest time I went without seeing you." Ahkmenrah was clearly a little upset about it but I could see the teasing smile on his lips.
"I'm sorry, Ahkmenrah. Mum was getting way too curious about where I went all the time and Don was questioning everything." I sigh at all the attempts I had tried to escape, each time getting caught my Don.
Ahk smiles gently, his green eyes sparkling like the stars in the sky, still not letting go of me. "I guess we have to make up for the lost time, Freya." I could feel my lips curl into a smile.
