▬▬▬in which Klaus Baudelaire falls in love with a girl whose gaze forever lingered on the stars.
MONTGOMERY MONTGOMERY WAS JUST ABOUT THE MOST ECCENTRIC PERSON ONE COULD MEET. Ophelia was proud to call him her (adoptive) uncle and loved him as she would her own family. He taught her a great many things about how the world worked as she often joined him on his travels, foregoing an orthodox education in favor of the hands-on experience that her uncle's wanderlust provided.
One of her earliest lessons was the she must be very good at one thing and, after that, she was free to invest her time in other things once it was mastered. Heavily influenced by the path her life had taken, Ophelia chose to master astronomy and spent many nights lying awake to study the stars. She never quite knew why her uncle was so insistent on her learning these skills but born with a thirst for knowledge, she never questioned him.
It was only upon the arrival of three orphans and her uncle's untimely death did things finally begin to fall in place.

― TBH I don't really remember everything that I had planned for this one since I came up with it a long time ago (and it's also been a few years since I've watched ASOUE.)
― What I do remember is that the book starts during the Reptile Room episode since Ophelia is the adopted daughter of Montgomery Montgomery (and she wouldn't be present any earlier.) They have a very close father-daughter relationship. Since he's obviously part of the VFD, he's trained Ophelia without really explaining what he's training her for, but her chosen field is astronomy. She loves anything to do with the stars and knows all of the constellations by heart and can navigate wherever she needs to go using the sky.
― When Violet, Klaus and Sunny come to stay with them, she's very happy to have more kids her age since she's travelled a lot with Monty and hasn't had the opportunity to have a lot of friends. Violet likes her because she's smart and likes to build things (but only things that have already been invented, like her telescope.) She's a little shy around Klaus because she hasn't had a lot of experience with boys so she doesn't really know how to talk to him.
― Klaus thinks she's pretty, though, and likes that she reads a lot of books (mostly just about astronomy.) When she takes them on a tour of the house, they go up to her observatory. Violet leaves first with Sunny, leaving the two of them alone. After a moment, Klaus asks "you're not really related to us, right?" Ophelia can't meet his eyes and studies the star charts on her desk. "No, Monty's not really my father, I just call him dad because it's weird otherwise." Klaus is very relieved that she's not his cousin or something, so he lets out a breath. "Oh, good." Then he realizes how that sounds and quickly corrects himself, "I mean, well-" Ophelia meets his gaze then with an understanding smile. "It's all a little confusing, isn't it?"
― She's of course devastated when Olaf kills Monty and can't do much to help find the truth because she's too distraught. But she does believe the Baudelaires because maybe Olaf tries to kidnap her too since she has access to her parents' (and Monty's) fortune. Violet, Klaus and Sunny try to comfort her since they understand what she's going through, but it doesn't help much since now she's stuck with their bad luck.
― I don't think that Klaus would have a crush on Isadora in this fic because he's just beginning to like Ophelia. I also don't think that Ophelia is the type to get jealous, so she wouldn't be annoyed that Klaus and Isadora become friends; if anything, she's happy that they have more friends.
― When the Baudelaires are in the Vile Village prison and it's Klaus' birthday, he's upset that he can't celebrate it. In a way of comforting him and with the excuse of giving him a 'present,' Ophelia kisses him on the cheek. He's very pleased (but also embarrassed) and suddenly it's the best birthday he's ever had.
― The main part of the 'romance' (not much since they're minors) happens at the Hostile Hospital. I haven't really decided if Ophelia takes Violet's place, so I'll leave that up to you, but what happens after is important. When they spend the night up on the scaffolding, it's the first time they sleep outside. It reminds Ophelia of Monty and she can't sleep, so she sits and watches the stars. Klaus realizes that she's still awake and decides to join her. "Where do you think people go when they die?" he asks, since they've both lost their parents. "Some people say that they don't go anywhere," Ophelia replies softly. "I don't like that. It's too. . . final. I can't see dad ever settling down, even if he's not with us anymore." She lets out a sad chuckle. "Carl Sagan says that we're made of star-stuff. I like to think that we're 93% made of space dust and that when we die, we return to the universe. I know it's not very scientific, but it's more comforting to think that when people we love die, they never truly leave us." Klaus stares at her hopefully. "Do you really believe that?" "With all my heart," she says firmly. He knows she's telling the truth, too, because of the way her features tighten a little- that stubborn look that she always gets when she's found a flaw in someone's argument and she's about to prove them wrong.
― He gets the sudden urge to just kiss her, but he's never kissed anyone before. He's read so much in books but they've never been about anything romantic, and now he wishes he'd read Pride and Prejudice when Violet had given it to him instead of shoving it in the back of his bookshelf. Since he hasn't the first idea of how to go about kissing someone, he instead opts for something that's just as nerve-wracking: moving his hand slightly to the left to close the space between them. His fingers barely brush hers, ready to pull away at the slightest sign of discomfort. Ophelia stiffens in surprise, even as warmth rushes to her face. Butterflies erupt in her stomach as she moves her hand closer and adjusts his fingers so they're holding onto each other properly. They don't say anything else for awhile but occasionally glance shyly at each other when they think that the other one isn't looking.
― That's about the last good thing that happens for a while until the Grim Grotto. I think this time Klaus might be distracted by Fiona, but Ophelia still doesn't get jealous and instead gets a little hurt that he's ditched her suddenly. Violet (who is Best Girl and hardcore ships her brother with Ophelia) berates Klaus about how stupid he's being. While I don't really remember why Klaus kisses Fiona, he apologizes to Ophelia and kisses her instead. She's of course elated about this, but they don't have a lot of time to enjoy it. ("This is great and all, and I'm very happy for you two, but could you save it until our lives aren't in mortal peril?" Violet quips. (At least, I think they're in danger when the kiss happens but like I said, I don't really remember.))
― Basic takeaways: Klaus and Ophelia are VERY cute and soft together. They're very blushy and sometimes stutter when they have to ask each other things. After the Hostile Hospital, they do a lot of tentative handholding, especially when one of them is scared or nervous. Violet and Ophelia become best friends very quickly and Violet sides with Ophelia over the Fiona situation. Sunny and Ophelia get along well enough, and Sunny allows Ophelia to carry her, but Ophelia doesn't have a lot of experience with babies and doesn't know what to do with Sunny, basically.
― Feel free to use any of the graphics provided when creating the book, but make sure you credit me as the creator in addition to the plot. Also, you don't have to use all the quotes provided in the 'description + epigraph' section but I wanted to make sure I got the right vibe across.
