◤ LOSING HIM WAS BLUE,
LIKE I'D NEVER KNOWN
MISSING HIM WAS DARK
GRAY, ALL ALONE
FORGETTING HIM WAS LIKE
TRYING TO KNOW SOMEBODY
YOU NEVER MET
BUT, LOVING
HIM WAS RED ◢
WALKING into the coffee shop which she goes to everyday, it was a daily routine for her. ordering her usual, a caramel macchiato. she was a caffeine addict, and would even go when it was night time —- she loved how quiet it was then.
after the barrister handed her drink, she sat down at one of the cute wooden tables in the corner of the shop. tonight was a rather bright one from the full moon shining through the tall glass windows. not only was it a beautiful moon which y/n adored so deeply, it was raining as well.
the bell rang, indicating someone walked in. y/n looked up from the table, seeing him. could it be? she didn't expect to ever see him again.
he didn't have that mesmerizing smile he used to have on him. no, he looked drained and dull. as if all the life was sucked out of him. his clothes being visibly drenched from the rain, his hair sopping wet which made his curls loose around his face.
it has been a couple years since y/n's break up with chris. here he was —- walking into the coffee shop she admired so heavily.
"hi, can i have a double shot espresso with splash of milk please." chris rasped at the barista. he took out his wallet to pay as he looked around the café. and that's where his sleepless eyes met with her lively ones. he was in shock, close to dropping his wallet as he froze in place.
y/n didn't know what to do. she seemed almost embarrassed to see him at this vulnerable state she felt like she was in. so, she decided to walk right out -– it was for the best for both of them, she thought to herself.
she heard the door open from behind her soon after. "y/n, wait please!" chris shouted from behind her. y/n stood where she was, quickly closing her eyes. oh how badly she wanted to act like she didn't miss her name slip out of his mouth.
"what, chris?" y/n blurted, turning around to face him sharply.
"god, i missed your voice so much." he whispered, coming closer to the now fragile girl. "and, i missed you." he added.
he was now only inches away from her, she examined his dark circles which formed under his eyes. "no, no.." she mumbled, "you can't just say that! we have been broken up for over two years now." y/n argued.
his breath was uneven as he lifted her hand up to his face, scanning her fingers. she gave him a confused expression.
"what are you doing?" y/n asked. he looked at her before dropping her hand which fell back to her side. a slight smile finally showing on his face.
"you aren't wearing an engagement ring? you didn't find someone else?" he questioned.
"no, i didn't. did you?" y/n responded. he quickly shook his head, still with that smile that she truly missed seeing everyday.
"you look so tired chris, what happened?" she said, trying to sound as nice as possible. an annoyed chuckle escaped from his lips as he began to rub his forehead.
"you. you is what happened. you left me and i am nothing without you." he confessed.
"chris.." she said. he grabbed her hands, slowly rubbing them with his thumb. "you know why i left you." she added. he squeezed his eyes shut, as if he was hearing nails on a chalk board.
he hated hearing those words come out of y/n's mouth, however he knew she was in the right. memories of that night started to replay in his head —— their fifth year anniversary.
ᵗʷᵒ ʸᵉᵃʳˢ ᵃᵍᵒ
"dinner was amazing." y/n said, rubbing her stomach in small circles to show how fully satisfied she was to chris. he laughed at her, putting his hand on her lower back as he unlocked their front door.
"it was, thank you baby." chris replied. he drops the keys on the kitchen counter.
"thank you for what? you paid, not me." she laughed. y/n leans over the table and giggled. chris flashed her a cheesy smile.
"you're right. i would never make you pay. it is always my treat." he said with all honesty, "but i was saying thank you for being my beautiful girlfriend."
y/n put her hand over her heart with her cheeks starting to blush. "i love you, chris. happy five year anniversary." she said, looking up at him for him to kiss her. he leans in, giving her a small yet still passionate kiss.
"i love you more my love. words do not begin to describe" he whispered, "and i have a surprise for you." he grabbed her hand and lead her out of the kitchen.
"baby, what is it? today was already enough for me." y/n shouted out. she lightly bit her lip, could this be it? was he going to finally propose? all the constant nagging from her family members, her friends, even matt and nick would finally all go away. all their questions about when chris was going to pop the question, if he bought a ring, if we were even going to end up getting married. all those questions would disappear for good. she smiled to herself.
"shhh, close your eyes. and no peaking!" chris demanded. she shuts her eyes, trusting him with all of her might. why wouldn't she? chris was all she ever wanted, and he felt the same.
"now.. open them!" chris yelled, letting go of y/n's hand. she opened her eyes so fast, it felt like her life flashed before her eyes. she looked around, her whole bedroom covered with rose petals, her favorite candies, and her favorite book on their bed.
"chris—" she whispered out. she was in utter shock and amazed at the same time. she scanned the room some more, the movie that chris and y/n went to see for their first date was set up on their television. and, on the nightstand was two tickets. she furrowed her eyebrows.
"what's this?" she mumbled, walking towards the nightstand. she held up the tickets. two tickets to paris for them. she covered her mouth. oh how much she has always wanted to go to paris.
"no way." she blurted out, looking up at chris with such teary eyes.
"the city of love, y/n. i know how much you have dreamed about going. and now i'll be there with you fulfilling your dream with you." chris said, grabbing her fingers to intertwine with his.
she was so positively overwhelmed. the whole day was a present but this.. this little set up was beyond special to y/n. yet, her smile quickly vanished. chris noticed it immediately.
"wait, whats wrong? did i mess something up?!" chris nervously asked. she didn't want to come off rude. but, how could she not think of her getting proposed? they have been dating for what felt like forever.
"no baby! everything is perfect." she exclaimed, putting her hand on his cheek.
"something is wrong, i know it is. you look.. disappointed" chris whispered.
"i'm not! i-i just thought—" y/n's throat suddenly became cracked and dry as she swallowed nothing but regret. "i genuinely thought you were going to propose tonight." she said. she looked down, not wanting to make eye contact with him at this time.
"y/n—" chris whispered, "you know, i'm.. i'm not ready for that yet." y/n now looked up at him with such anger filling inside her. the way she has been so patient with him yet he still wasn't ready to be engaged to her.
"not ready? it has been fucking five years chris!" y/n yelled back. she never got loud with him. in fact, neither of them did. chris would rather step on a bed of nails than raise his voice at y/n.
"it's either date to marry, or date to end up with a broken heart!" y/n shouted out. the tickets slowly swayed as they were dropped from y/n's hands onto the floor
chris didn't respond. "well?! which one is it chris?" she said. still no response from chris. his face was pale as a ghost. he almost looked lifeless.
she started to walk out of the bedroom, now at the door. "tell me right now chris which one is it. i am so tired of these games. we aren't little kids. what are we waiting for?" she said. chris still with no words to reply back with.
"i'm leaving —- and if you don't respond, that gives me your answer." y/n said. chris now staring at her with eyes she has never seen before. he almost looked like a lost puppy, looking for his owner. he didn't feel like he was in their apartment. he felt like he was in a strange place, all alone.
y/n takes one more look at him, and that is when chris looks down at the ground. she licks her lips with aggression, shutting the door behind her.
♫ TOUCHING HIM WAS LIKE
REALIZING ALL YOU EVER WANTED
WAS RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF YOU ♫
chris flashes back to reality. y/n standing in front of him in the pouring rain outside of her favorite coffee shop.
"i know.." chris whispered, "that's why i thought you would be engaged by now. i assumed you would've found a boy that could give you the one thing i wasn't ready for at the time."
"no, i uh.. actually have been single since you and i split." she said, twiddling her fingers. he couldn't believe the words that came out of her mouth.
"me too." he murmured.
and as the once happy couple were finally face to face in the rain, their eyes connecting felt like they were together again.
"i meant what i said, by the way." he said. she had a confusion look on her face, resulting in her nose scrunching up. oh how much he loved when she did that expression, he thought it was the cutest thing.
"about how i wasn't ready at that time. but.. i am now, i promise. we are both twenty seven —- almost thirty fucking years old. the fact that both of us haven't been seeing people since we broke up goes to show that.." he paused.
"that me and you are date to marry, not date to get your heart broken."
"my heart has been broken for the past two years, and i know that option is not for me." he whispered out.
