A CHILLY new york city night —- matthew sat on the bench waiting for his train to arrive so he can get back to his apartment. he reached in his coat pocket, grabbing starburst to eat due to boredom and starvation.

he opened the pack of starburst, an orange one on top. that was matt's least favorite one. he quickly took it out of the pack, not eating it and grabbing the next flavor. his favorite one, strawberry. he unravels the wrapper before he popped it in his mouth, feeling satisfied.

"you don't like the orange ones?" a girl's voice from behind him. he turned his head to look towards her way. she was leaning against the subway pole. he looked down at her hand, she was eating starburst too. "the orange ones are my favorite."

"i, uh hate those ones. i always toss them aside." matt said to the girl. she gave him a little smile, lightly chuckling to herself.

"here you can take my pink ones, i'll take your orange." she said to him as she walked towards the bench. he put his hand out for her to give him all of his favorite specific candies. while, he picked out all of the orange ones for her. both the tip of their fingers lightly touched as they swapped their little candies.

"thank you very much, starburst boy." she laughed, "you got a name? or should i keep calling you that." by now she was sitting next to him on the bench, taking out her other earphone.

"matt, but i do like that nickname." he said with all honesty. they kept deep eye contact with one another. matt couldn't tell what it was about her, but he was intrigued. she looked like she was full of charisma and confidence.

"matt.. that's a cute name. i'm y/n." she replied. matt thought that name fit her perfectly. he heard everything she was saying but he was starting to get lost in her eyes.

"where are you headed to, y/n?" matt asked her as he put one of the candies she gave him in his mouth. she told him she was coming back from work. they were waiting for the same train.

the intercom went off, both of them looking up to look at the speaker. their train was arriving in one minute.

the train finally came and the doors open. matt and y/n both get up from the bench and walk towards the train. matt put his hand out, signaling for her to go first. she smiled at him while walking on, him right behind her.

she sat down, patting the seat next to her as she looked up at him. matt sat down, looking around and realizing that they were the only ones on this side of the train.

by now, they couldn't stop talking. matt didn't realize how close you can get to a stranger in that limited amount of time. they both told each other little secrets from the past, their goals and dreams, their ambitions.

matt knew more about y/n in under an hour than he did about most people in his whole life. and he loved that. he has never connected with a person faster than in this moment.

they arrive at their destination, both of them looking at each other with such innocence. they didn't want to leave this train. matt hoped this train ride could last forever, so he can just keep talking to her. they felt like they were in this little bubble.

"fuck it, let's stay on." y/n blurted out. matt looked at her with his eyebrows raised.

"but this is our stop? when are we going to get off?" he asked. she shrugged her shoulders, giving him a cheesy smile.

"i don't know. but i don't really care." she said. he scanned her face, he couldn't help but start smiling back at her.

"okay, fuck it." he mumbled. she squealed out in happiness before they both started to laugh in sync.

they didn't know how long they have been on this one train. but of course, they didn't care. they already listened to y/n's whole playlist, one ear bud in both of their ears.

they also played three rounds of tic tac toe with the condescension on the train window, matt letting her win every time.

she cheered as she wins again, a genuine smile shown on her face. matt couldn't help but admire how excited she was from this little game.

"i like you." he whispered to her. she looked at him, still grinning at him.

"you like me?" she replied back. she pushed her sleeve down and wiped down their last game of tick tac toe, setting up a new one for them.

"i like your face." she added, he was still staring at her, her side profile as she was writing on the glass window.

"i like yours." he whispered at him, she turned her head to meet his eyes.

"what's the happiest memory of your life?" she asked. matt looked into her beautiful big eyes.

"i think it's happening right now." matt whispered to her. their faces are now inches apart, right next to train window.

y/n turned and rested her head on matt's shoulder. she closed her eyes, feeling safe and secure. he looked down at her, smiling to himself.

her phone was on her lap, he began to fidget with her phone case. he turned her phone over, resulting in her screen to turn on.

matthew caught a glimpse of her wallpaper —- a picture of her and a boy kissing in times square. he slowly turned off her phone and flipped it face down on her lap.

how does it feel to like someone who doesn't deserve it?
