Chapter 3 - Babe with the Power

As Chris' nimble, tapering fingers flipped through the yellowing pages of the Book of Shadows, strands of sandy brown hair fell across his forehead. With my arms crossed over my chest, I kept a watchful eye on him.

"I shudder to know what you're doing over there," I called to him, arching an eyebrow suspiciously.

Truth be told, I was more than a little concerned it had responded to him. By all rights, it shouldn't. But who was I to judge what the book did and didn't approve of? Okay, fine, it's not as if it was alive or anything - but it had been here longer than I had. It would know if he's evil or not...and he did save Paige. Well, kind of.

"Don't you worry about it, Garcia. Not your problem," he responded distractedly, not glancing up from the weathered pages.

An aggravated sound escaped my mouth and I rolled my eyes at being ignored, finally having enough of his shenanigans. Stepping over to where he stood in front of the book, I rounded the stand it was set on so that I was facing him.

"You know what? You are not in charge here," I said coldly, pointing my finger at his chest, "I am. And I say that you don't touch the book,"

A smirk began to tug at the corners of Chris' lips at my outburst, clearly enjoying my distress. He still towered over my much smaller frame but at least from this vantage point, I felt a tiny bit more intimidating. Although, I had to admit, being this close to him did have its drawbacks. Like the fact that I could see swirls of different shades of green within his eyes - emerald, chartreuse, jade - all fighting for dominance.

Obviously, he sensed my discomfort because his smirk deepened even more. Okay, this guy was just twisted - there was no other word for it.

I opened my mouth then to admonish him when Piper took that moment to stride in. Her eyes widened at our closeness and I quickly pushed on his chest with my hand to create some distance between us. A slight chuckle escaped his mouth as he stumbled back and I rolled my eyes.

"What are you two doing?" she asked, arching her eyebrows in surprise.

Chris replied before I could though, "What does it look like we're doing? Trying to find a way to free stone-cold Paige over here,"

The eldest Halliwell's eyes narrowed as she shooed Chris away from the book, "Step away,"

"Please, like I haven't looked in this before. By the way, you should update your goblins entry," he told her, tapping a page with his index finger, "It'll come in handy some day,"

"Goblins? Like in Labryinth?" I volunteered, my inner nerd seeking to get out.

"Yeah, sure, they look just like Muppets," Chris deadpanned before continuing, "Seriously though, it's gonna get ugly,"

Piper shot him a look and he sighed, "Look, obviously you don't trust me, but I touched the book, right? And the book thinks I'm good. Shouldn't you?"

"Well, maybe you found a way around that,"

"Piper, come on. I'm just trying to help,"

"Well, then if that's true, why don't you tell me how to vanquish the Titans?"

He bit his lip, "Except you can't vanquish them,"

"You mean, not without the power of three, right?" I asked him.

"Maybe not even with that. The only way the Elders could stop them three thousands of years ago was by infusing some mortals with a lot of power. Way more than you guys have,"

"So they can do that again," Piper stated, more to herself than the two of us.

Chris shook his head, "Not after what happened last time. When the mortals trapped the Titans, the power went to their heads. They declared themselves gods and forced the world to worship them. The Elders swore they would never allow that to happen again,"

Piper put a hand up then, "Hang on a second, I'm having a ninth grade flashback. You're talking about the Greek gods: Zeus, Athena, Aphrodite? They were mortals?"

"Mythology left that part out. Not the only inaccuracy by the way,"

Suddenly, Phoebe walked in, interrupting the conversation. She was holding hands with a dwarf on one side of her and a leprechaun on the other.

"Phoebe, what are you doing? You're supposed to be..." Piper started, trailing off as her eyes landed on the magical creatures beside her sister.

"I know, I know. But I thought they could help us free Paige. After all, a leprechaun's luck has helped us before," she grinned, her cheerful demeanor coming back in full force from what it was earlier as she patted the dwarf on the shoulder.

"He's the leprechaun, I'm one of the seven dwarves. Try to keep it straight, will you?" he grumbled, removing her hand from him in disgust.

As the dwarf and leprechaun saw to freeing Page, Phoebe turned back to us, "Okay, so where are we?"

"Still trying to figure that out. One thing I'm still not clear about - if the Titans are roaming around, why are they killing Whitelighters?" Piper directed her question towards Chris and he shrugged in response.

"Because they need their orbing power,"

"Their orbing power? What on earth would they wanna do with..." she trailed off then, brown eyes widening as a sudden thought hit her, "Leo!"

Piper ran past us then and out of the attic, making Phoebe and I frown in confusion.

"What'd I miss? What did she just figure out?" I questioned the Whitelighter.

His pale green eyes were hooded, guarded as he responded quietly, "Nothing good."

After Piper left, the leprechaun and drawf continued to work on freeing Page to no avail. Meanwhile, Chris had wandered off - yes, again - and was now perusing the vials lined up on an old shelf in a corner, much to Phoebe's dismay.

"What are you doing over here?" I sighed, attempting to pry him away from the shelf.

"Nothing," he shrugged, batting my hands back, "You guys keep this stuff forever, you know that?"

"You knew the Titans were after the Elders, didn't you? Why didn't you tell us?" Phoebe asked him, stepping up behind me.

"I told you, there's some things I can't tell you. Some things you need to figure out on your own," he reiterated emphatically and I groaned, putting a hand to my temple.

Too much more of this was going to give me a migraine.

"Even at the risk of making things worse?" she asked him.

Piper walked back in then, looking more than a little angry, "Alright, what's going on? Leo is not responding to any of my calls and it's been over five hours,"

"I really don't know," Chris responded.

"Well, I really think you do,"

"Look, you're the one who wanted him to go up there in the first place, not me. Alright, fine, maybe I do know," he sighed then as Piper continued to glare at him, "And if I'm right, he's gonna need some serious alone time,"

"You know what? Cut it out with the cryptic mess. You need to go up there and bring him back now. No more games,"

"Okay, fine, I'll go. But if I were you three, I'd focus on freeing Paige because you're gonna need her. Soon."

With that, he orbed out in a swirl of blue and white lights, leaving the three of us standing there - with no idea just how to fix the mess we'd found ourselves in.

"So...if we fight goblins after this and win, does that make me the babe with the power?"

"Shut up, Mattie."
