Chapter 23 - A Broken Spell
It turns out, Chris and I had really nothing to worry about with all of these demons attacking. Because not long after, another one did. This time, it did some sort of spell on Wyatt - saying he was now "turned". Whatever that meant.
But it really shook Piper and now, she was more than willing to consider the idea of binding his powers like Chris had suggested earlier.
Of course, nothing in our lives was that simple, though. Because during Piper's impromptu "birthday party" that Phoebe and Paige had set up for her (did I mention that they'd also conjured her up 'Mr. Right' as a gift?), everything fell to pieces. Even though the guy was meant for Piper, they all ended up liking him. Needless to say - it didn't end well. Not once the food fight began anyway.
That's when our guests wisely chose to leave and Chris took advantage of the opportunity presented to him - to get the girls to bind Wyatt's powers. Before anything else could go wrong.
"Are you sure about this?" Phoebe was asking as Piper's boy toy led us up to the attic.
"What you want more than anything is to get along. And this will help you do that," Mr. Right AKA David told her matter-of-factly.
"Um, I'm pretty sure what we want more than anything is, um, a good dry cleaner," Paige pointed out and I couldn't help but snort with laughter.
She shot me a dirty look but that only made me laugh harder, eyeing the icing stuck to the tip of her nose.
Chris called out for Leo then and instantly, he orbed into the attic, Wyatt on his hip.
He quickly put him into his little blue playpen before a tiny smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, noticing the girls' appearance, "What happened?"
Chris sighed in response, "You don't wanna know."
"We're binding Wyatt's powers," Piper told him simple in answer.
Leo was more than a little exasperated, "What?"
"We already decided,"
"You can't be serious."
I just wish we had noticed them - maybe then things would have played out differently. But before anyone had the chance to react, Wyatt had his protective magic shield up and the rest of us was thrown to the floor. Glancing up from where I fell, towering over the playpen were three very familiar demons - in fact, the very ones who had previously tried to kidnap Wyatt.
Somehow, they were able to walk into the shield, clearly unaffected by its magical properties.
"He's one of us now." one of them, I assumed the leader, said softly before leaning down to place a hand on Wyatt's chest.
With a shimmer so sudden we almost didn't see it happen, they were gone - blinked out of existence. And likely, into a whole other reality.
But after they were gone, things really went haywire. When the girls finally got their bearings and weren't ga-ga over Mr. Right, they advanced on Chris.
"Listen to me, what are you doing?" Chris asked, taking tentative steps back to create distance between them.
"The pheromones wore off," Phoebe growled in response.
"Right after they took my son!" Piper bit out.
"You don't seriously believe this is my fault, do you?" Chris said, his back facing the glass-stained window.
"Oh, right, so it's just a big coincidence we all fell under Mr. Right's spell?" Paige asked him, arching an eyebrow.
Phoebe spread her hands in exasperation, "And suddenly we all want to bind Wyatt's powers?"
I frowned in confusion before it finally dawned on me - this was all Chris' doing. He put a spell on them so they'd do what he wanted. Oh, now, it made sense.
David spoke up then, interrupting the flow of conversation, "You see, Chris, what they really want is for you-"
"-for you to leave," Paige finished for him as he walked over to join us.
"This is crazy. Leo, tell them," Chris pleaded.
Leo's arms were crossed, eyes intense as he replied, "Tell them what? I'm wondering the same thing myself,"
"Okay, so what if I did? I was only trying to protect Wyatt,"
"By tricking us?" Piper ground out between gritted teeth.
Chris shrugged, "I had to,"
"But why, Chris?" I asked, still feeling thoroughly confused at this turn of events.
"Because the only reason I came here was to keep Wyatt from turning evil,"
All fell silent then, everyone struck dumb by the words issuing from Chris' mouth. That...that wasn't possible... Was it?
"Turning evil?" Leo questioned, skeptical.
"Wait, don't you mean stopping evil from hurting him?" Paige asked.
"I didn't think you'd help me if you knew the truth. I knew you wouldn't. The evil from the future I came back to stop isn't a demon. It's Wyatt..." Chris confessed, his voice quiet, somber.
Piper looked at him, her expression indignant, "You're lying,"
"No, I'm not. He's gonna grow up and terrorize people with his powers, take over. Kill even,"
"Why should we believe you after all the lies?" Leo asked him.
I shot the Elder an irritated look. Surely, after everything we'd been through - didn't they trust him yet?
"Because you have to,"
The eldest Halliwell shook her head then, determined not to believe, "No, Chris, we don't, actually,"
"Fine, then don't. Either way, we need to save Wyatt now and I'm the one who knows how to do it,"
Phoebe arched her eyebrows, "Really? How?"
"The Order. They used their powers to turn him, to reverse his morality," Chris explained, "See, he thinks bad is good now, and good is bad. That's why his shield repelled you,"
"So?" Leo shrugged.
"So Wyatt brings his shield up around me. He thinks I'm a threat,"
"Yeah, so do I," Piper pointed out, dark eyes hard as flint.
"Well, I don't." I snapped at her, unable to help myself at being protective over my new boyfriend.
Piper arched an eyebrow at my defiance while Chris only shot me a grateful smile which I returned before he turned back to the others, continuing to plead with them, "Listen to me, they reversed his sense of morality. That means his shield will protect him from you but not from me. Please, I'm the only one who can save him. Let me help,"
Piper, though, wouldn't be that willing, that persuaded, "Chris, we don't need your help. I will get my son back, and when I do, I don't wanna see you anymore."
I felt a pang in my chest at the statement, taking a step back involuntarily as I gazed over at her with wide eyes. How could she say that to Chris? After all that he'd done to help us, to help Wyatt? And now, what? She was just going to toss him out, tell him never to come back again? This wasn't like the Piper I knew. And to be honest, it was a side I didn't like.
Chris' green gaze flitted from each somber face in turn but it was evident, he'd find no sympathy there before finally his eyes locked on mine, "I'm sorry."
I felt the familiar pin-prick of tears welling up behind my eyes as Chris orbed out of the Manor, hoping beyond all hope that he would be okay.
