Chapter 20 - Back to the Future

Before I could say or do anything to stop her, though, she had shimmered out of the Manor with him. Quickly, I roused Leo from his unconscious state and together, we shot up the stairs to the attic to create a potion that would break this awful spell the other me had cast on the girls.

When it was finally done, I stoppered the vial before latching onto Leo's hand and away we orbed to locate the girls. It wasn't that hard to find them - and surprisingly, not that hard to break the spell either once we used the potion on them.

The hardest part was finding where she - me, whatever - took Chris. That's where the girls came in, helping me scry for him. And finally, with a little luck and a lot of magic, we did. Paige shot me a wobbly, encouraging smile before we all locked hands and orbed out of the Manor. But what we orbed into was worse than I had imagined. Turns out, the other me had drawn a portal - out of our timeline and back to the future, I suppose. But really though, where was Dr. Emmett Brown when you needed him?

"Hey, future girl!" I called out, gaining my future self's attention as I heaved a potion towards her.

It would've worked well - if it hadn't been intercepted. Instead, she heaved something of her own towards me - a dagger - while breaking the vial in the process. She shimmered away then, leaving me spinning in place to try and find her as Piper slowed down time, attempting to freeze the dagger. But before she could, the other Mattie shimmered back, closer to me this time, and snatched the dagger mid-air before pressing it against my throat.

A gasp escaped my mouth as she snarled, "You were saying?"

Her brown eyes, the same as my own, burned with hatred - hatred for me, for our kind and most of all, for being stuck here in her past.

Paige took a step forward slowly but Future Mattie stopped her in her tracks, "Uh-uh! I can kill her in half the time it takes you to even think about it,"

I swallowed hard as Paige replied, "Yeah, we still have enough potion to vanquish you,"

The Future Mattie only shrugged in response, "Maybe. But then you really will have to hope the power of two will do. Won't you, Paige? You'd be surprised what's in the history books. Now put the vials down slowly,"

Reluctantly, Paige, Phoebe, and Piper did as she bid them.

"Mattie, don't," Chris urged Future Mattie vehemently, "Let her go and I promise I'll go with you,"

"Chris, what are you doing?" Paige demanded.

But Chris ignored her, still addressing Future Mattie, "If you kill her, there won't be a future for either one of us to go back to and you know it,"

After a moment's hesitation, Future Mattie finally backed down, releasing me. The tip of the dagger slid from my neck, leaving a thin line of crimson behind it. But the danger was past - that was all that mattered.

Or so I thought. So I thought before Future Mattie began to walk towards the wall once more, Chris in tow.

"Piper, freeze them!" Paige said quickly.

Piper's hand went up to freeze them but it didn't work. Instead, the motion just bounced right off, leaving them totally unaffected.

She frowned, confused, "Uh, okay, I get why she didn't freeze but why didn't he freeze?"

Realization began to dawn on me as I stuttered out, "I don't- Unless he's a..."

"I'm a witch too?" Chris challenged, eyes locking on mine briefly before looking at the others as he confirmed, "That's right. Part witch, part Whitelighter. Just like you, Paige,"

Paige gaped at him, "You lied to us?"

"I had to. It was the only way I could get you to trust me,"

Phoebe scoffed, "Trust you?"

He waved a hand, "Never mind, it doesn't matter anyway,"

"So that's it?" I asked him, finally speaking and hoping beyond all hope that my voice wouldn't break as I felt something inside me shatter, "You're just gonna leave?"

"I don't have a choice. She stripped my powers," he said to me seriously and my gaze flitted away from his before he continued on, "Looks like Leo's gonna have to fix that floorboard without me."

My frown only deepened as I glanced up once more, our eyes locking. What was that supposed to mean?

Future Mattie waved her arm then and a portal appeared where the chalk lines had once been on the wall. Our eyes held as she grabbed his hand, leading him away as together, they stepped through the portal.

I could feel every jagged piece of my broken heart scraping against the inside of my chest as he disappeared in a glow of blue light, leaving me totally and completely alone.
