𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 ;

carrie annsley grew up with a loving mother and a distant father, in a middle-class setting in hawkins, indiana. she was decent at school, had a reasonably large group of friends, and was happy for most of her childhood. though her father was a deadbeat dad, her mother uplifted carrie in everything that she did, and was carrie's light and everlasting rock against any difficulties that would come her way.

carrie was thirteen when her mother disappeared. though the disappearance was looked into by the police, the case was dropped after a short amount of time, the town assuming that helena annsley had run off to another city and abandoned her daughter and deadbeat husband. however, her mother was never discovered in any records of the other cities, and a body was never found. her mother's disappearance destroyed both carrie and her father. carrie resorted to rebellion, smoking, alcohol and drugs to cope. rather, her father simply stopped caring about her, and carrie was forced to fend for herself.  as a result of this dramatic change to her life, most of carrie's friends began to fade out of her life—including steve harrington, who would have rather been popular and cool than hang out with the girl with a missing mother. this lead to carrie being a loner and an outcast in hawkins. she became more bitter and rude, and stopped giving a shit about everything. her grades dropped, she became distant and biting.

it became carrie's sole objective to investigate what happened to her mother, and to find where out where she was. carrie was convinced that her mother was alive and hadn't abandoned her. so, she began to search, and search, and search, until it was all she was focused on. she created a connections board to discover where her mother might have gone and constantly adds new connection pieces.

yet, carrie always knew faintly in the corner of her mind that there was something deeper in this whole investigation. that perhaps the thing that took her mother three years ago was not entirely human, and had many arms and shadows that curled around her room whenever she tried to remember.

𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄 ;

carrie has brunette hair and large, brown doe eyes that either always seem to give her a permanent expression of shock or irritation. she has a very lithe body and is tall, standing at 5'10", and oddly intimidating. carrie wears dark, edgy make-up often consisting of bold, black eyeliner and dark lipstick, though it's much disproved of at school. she's rarely seen outside without a cigarette between her lips, or clutched within her ashen fingers. she styles her hair in the classical 80s rebellious blown-out style.

over the years, her eyes have grown more hollow and her cheeks more gaunt—another reason that earned her the nickname of 'carrie white' or 'horror carrie'. she also lost a significant amount of weight since childhood, likely due to the fact that she relies on her own money to pay for her food, and that she's often too distracted or drunk to even think about eating. often, her lips are cracked and dry. overall, her appearance creates a strangely haunting look which frightens most people staying away from her—just the way (though not secretly) she likes it.

𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘 ;

carrie's personality is very closed-off and cold. she's rude to just about everyone around her, as that's how majority of people are to her. her snarky responses often get her in trouble from teachers or classmates. she doesn't take shit from anyone and will fight back like hell whenever someone disses her mother. carrie also isn't afraid to get violent if the need arises—she has an infamous reputation for slapping carol whenever the other girl gets too mouthy. she has a very short temper and is easily angered. it's her personality that's also the reason why she has no friends—as she decided she may as well fit in with what people believe about her.

still, people assume she's worse than she actually is—and what they say is a heartless girl who would get needlessly violent with them if they spoke up against her, is actually a girl experiencing prolonged grief, and the insecurity that her mother may have left her.

carrie is an incredibly determined person. nothing can stand in the way of her goal: not friends, authority members, evil scientists, monsters, or even herself. her goal is to find her mother alive, and that's it. she would go to the ends of the earth to discoverer what happened to her mother, or to see her again.

𝐅𝐀𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐎𝐍 ;

carrie's clothes take after the 80s grunge aesthetic, though she sticks more with t-shirts of rock or alternative bands she likes. this style usually consists of dark jeans, leather jackets and combat boots. she doesn't fear having splashes of colour in the shirts or the socks she wears. carrie never takes off the necklace of a half-heart around her neck. it was given to her by her mother, who wore the other half of the heart at all times. she often clutches this in her hands when she's struggling or in need of support. it is often the only jewellery that she wears, apart from occasional rings on her fingers. she's planning on getting some facial piercings, choosing between a septum, lip, or eyebrow piercing.

𝐅𝐀𝐓𝐀𝐋 𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐖𝐒 ;

ʰᵒᵗʰᵉᵃᵈᵉᵈ— carrie is incredibly hotheaded and impulsively fights back whenever she is challenged. if someone talks negatively about her mother, she will snap rather suddenly and become aggressive. this also means she has a tendency to be bitchy. carrie struggles to keep her emotions in check, and due to this hotheadedness she often says things she should regret, or commits unforgivable actions.

ᵉˣᶜᵉˢˢⁱᵛᵉ ᶜᵘʳⁱᵒᵘˢⁱᵗʸ— she is excessively curious about all things to do with her mother. this often gets carrie in dangerous situations as she is unable to hold back her desire to investigate further and further. this leads her to explore hawkins lab, the upside-down, and the mystery of the nightmare man, despite each attempt placing her life in imminent danger.

ᵒᵇˢᵉˢˢⁱᵛᵉ— carrie faces obsession over her mother's disappearance and refuses to let it go like the rest of the town has. this drives her to place herself and others in dangerous situations. she becomes incredibly defensive when her obsession is brought up, or people speak about her mother negatively.

ʳᵉᵇᵉˡˡⁱᵒᵘˢ— carrie does just about everything she can to get in trouble. this includes talking back to teachers, skipping class, smoking in the halls, evading the chief of police, and fighting with students at the school. really, it's all just a cover-up for the real grief she's constantly experiencing.

ᵃᵈᵈⁱᶜᵗⁱᵒⁿ— carrie is addicted to a variety of substances: cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. she takes these in order to forget her secret pain, as they help to numb her. cigarettes, in particular, are her go-to when in public. she's barely ever seen without one, and is constantly lighting them when stressed, afraid, or in danger.

ᵈᵉʳᵃⁿᵍᵉᵈ ⁽ˢˡⁱᵍʰᵗˡʸ⁾— throughout the book, carrie becomes increasingly more unhinged due to the dark secrets she uncovers and the discovery of the nightmare man. it becomes her sole purpose to find her mother, no matter what that takes. however, this fades at the finale of the book, as she finally comes to term with her grief and acceptance.

ᵍʳⁱᵉᵛⁱⁿᵍ— the deep-rooted grief that carrie is holding within her is the cause for all of her other flaws. it causes her to act out, become obsessive, and rely on other substances to deafen her pain. really, carrie only wants her mother—one of the only people in the world to love her—back.
