𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 ;
sara was born to jim and diane hopper, and from a young age had a habit of panic attacks that would form seemingly out of nowhere. her mother had taken part in some mk ultra tests before sar was born, causing sara to display some abnormalities that appeared as she was growing up. at the age of six, sara was torn away from her mother and father by a man named dr brenner. he forced her into a van with the help of a team of scientists, and had a mysterious young girl named three alter the memories of the town to convince each person that sara hopper had died from a fatal form of cancer. three erased sara's memories too, until the only thing she was left with was the nickname "sar", and the understanding that she didn't belong in there. she was placed in a lab with a growing amount of other children, and was left to grow up there without ever knowing if she had a family that loved her.
sar's days were spent as a lab rat, sitting still as scientists stuck needles into her skin and placed receptors on her head, watching the lines brain monitors spike and fall when they put her under various scenarios. at first, when she'd arrived with no memories of who she was—only what 003 had left her with—it was hard. the tests they gave her at first were frustratingly simple: "tell us what he's thinking"; "make him stand"; "speak to the nice man in your mind". but over the years, as her mind opened and her powers stretched, they grew more difficult: "the man in this photo, he's in russia, what is he thinking, six?"; "tell him to pull the trigger, six, on all of them"; "enter the rat's mind, control it, become it". the tests pulled her around, jumbled her up, dragged her mind too far out of its skull over and over, and it hurt every time.
the experiments would have driven her insane if it wasn't for the other children. there were twelve of them, in the end, though some of them never even had the chance to meet each other (they did not live for very long). they were: one, with the kind smile and masked eyes, whose glance could kill any living thing; two, emma, who had eyes brighter than morning dew and a laugh which could cure any ailment; three, a sullen girl who took memories and worked alongside the lab for special treatment, none of them got along with her; four, a boy older than sar named james, with the nearly-useless ability to feel one's emotions; five, gentle lune who taught sar everything she knew; seven, the fiery girl who knew only courage; eight, a timid girl who hardly spoke, yet sar who had a soft spot for; nine, a young, sweet boy who stuttered when he talked; ten, a lithe girl who was the smartest person sar had ever met; eleven, a soft little girl with gentle eyes; and twelve, katie, who was the kindest girl sar had ever known.
she spent a large amount of her childhood there, or at least what she remembered. those children, at the time, were the only family she'd ever known. no wonder it had broken her when each of them had been killed so terribly. seven first, then three, one, two, five, until there were only a handful of them left, still so young and fragile, knowing so much of the horrors of the world.
eventually, sar escaped the laboratory in a breakout, when she was thirteen, with three other children: lune, james and katie. it had taken months to plan, but in the end they'd only been able to grab who they could, last minute. young katie had blown open the outer wall and the four of them had run across the grounds barefoot and bleeding.
the four had almost made it, but there were too many guards, and if it kept up, they'd be captured before they reached the pipes. it was lune—brave, selfless lune, who had raised sar, and been nothing but gentle and sweet—who made the call, and let go of sar's hand and waited. sar would have stopped her, but james had grabbed her by the arm and pulled her along, so that by the time the panicked gunfire rained on still, defenceless lune, sar was through the gate and couldn't see the sight. the night had brought rain and freezing winds, and sar thought she might die of the pain alone. but she didn't, and she had to keep going.
after a year, seeing katie and james' faces still reminded her of the pain of hawkins lab, and so she separated herself from them and moved to live in chicago, keeping touch with them through telepathy. chicago gave her the chance to do something which made her feel alive again: crime. it was only robbing banks, but it gave her this rush that helped her to feel not so dead and broken inside, even if for all the wrong reasons. and she was satisfied with that life, even if it wasn't very fulfilling, because all she'd ever known was dormitories and experiments, and it was strange adjusting in this new world.
three years after escaping the lab, sar feels a strange energy from her hometown of hawkins, where she fled from so many years ago. believing it to have something to do with the lab—perhaps another child—sar travels back to hawkins, when she finds something strange and unearthly in the woods, and a frazzled, silly boy.
𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄 ;
sara has bright blue eyes which are slightly rounded, and thin, dark eyebrows. her face shape is unique and defined by a sharp, squared jawline. sar has a pointed nose, slightly upturned, and gently-sloped pink lips. her hair is long and blonde, either worn down or thrown up in a messy ponytail. she wears little makeup, as she doesn't really find the need.
sar bears the tattoo "006" on her left inner wrist, and often tries to hide it with sleeves, bandaids or makeup. many scars scatter her skin: some small from experiments and childish injuries; others, from lab-tests gone wrong, or the remains of punishment. Her bicep bears one large, identifiable scar in the shape of a hooked 'L', which she received as a child before the lab, from falling off a swing her father was pushing.
she is a healthy weight, though during her time in the lab she was thin and sickly. her body is not voluptuous, yet has curves, and she is considered slim. she doesn't have an overly athletic figure, though she does regular exercise. her legs are long and sar is taller than most girls her age, standing at 5'10, only an inch below steve, taller than jonathan and matching heights with billy.
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘 ;
sar is generally an upbeat and happy person, cracking jokes, grinning, and acting foolishly happily in public as she messes around: dancing steve around at the snowball or skipping through the corridors with her walkman headphones blasting music. she is a naturally loveable person, who finds herself growing close to people very easily. sar is naturally very affectionate. when she loves someone, she loves them fiercely and would do just about anything for them. this includes placing herself in dangerous situations to keep them safe, or becoming a little clingy. when in danger, she often doesn't think, and would throw herself at any threat to keep everyone alive.
however, sar can't always be the bright and positive one. as her childhood left her with deep-rooted conflict, she is quite often affected by strong anxiety, sorrow or guilt. this can put her out for hours or even days. when she's in this state, she's in no position to help those around her, or a lot of times, help herself. she becomes trapped in a depressive rut and those she love often need to help her through it. it eats away at her often, and she feels like she doesn't deserve what she has, that she should have died in the lab, or that she's always destined for tragedy.
𝐅𝐀𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐎𝐍 ;
as sar lives in the 80s, her fashion fits in that time period. she often wears doc martens or similar boots, and dons fashionable jackets or sweaters. sar either wears above-the-knee skirts or high-waisted jeans. her clothing is always bright and colourful.
however, despite what she wears, yellow is always present in her outfit. whether it's a yellow skirt, yellow socks, a yellow sweater, or something as unnoticeable as yellow shoe-laces, nail polish, or a scrunchie, she always makes sure to wear a dash of it. as it was lune's most adored colour, it has special significance to sar and is her favourite colour too. therefore, she never leaves the house without the smallest splash of it.
𝐅𝐀𝐓𝐀𝐋 𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐖𝐒 ;
ˢᵉˡᶠ⁻ˢᵃᶜʳⁱᶠⁱᶜᵃˡ ⁿᵃᵗᵘʳᵉ— sar wouldn't hesitate to give her life for her friends or family. after being trapped in the lab without proper love for so long, she loves those around her fiercely and is ready to die for them at just about every turn. using her powers without concern on its effects on her; shoving them behind her when facing monsters; or giving herself up just to save them, there are pretty much no limits that sar would stop at to protect the people she loves. even if it's at the cost of her own life.
ˢᵗᵘᵇᵇᵒʳⁿⁿᵉˢˢ— having developed her father's keen aptitude for unmoving stubbornness, when having set her mind to something, sar will just about never let anyone else change her mind. whether it be an attitude, an opinion, an action, or an emotion, she often finds herself in situations where she refuses to back down—and most of the time it's for a self-sacrifical reason, which is bound to land her in danger.
ᵗʳᵃᵘᵐᵃ— sara suffers from anxiety attacks and occasionally dissociation from reality, and is prone to flashbacks or panic attacks through certain triggers. it means that she struggles on a day-to-day basis, some days worse than others, where one day it may go unnoticed, and another it's so crippling she can't leave her room. this also appears in the form of terrible nightmares. she has panic disorder and ptsd.
ⁱᵐᵖᵘˡˢⁱᵛᵉⁿᵉˢˢ— she will do whatever she believes is right on a whim, whether that means putting herself or others in danger.
ʰᵒᵗʰᵉᵃᵈᵉᵈ— much like her father, sar struggles to keep a hold of her anger, and her sudden outbursts when angered can put her in dangerous situations, such as when billy tried to run the kids over in his car, or when she punched tommy in the face.
