REAL LIFE

THE night air was warm and thick with the hum of city life, but Ruby didn't mind. She had the windows down, the breeze pushing through her dark curls as she tapped the steering wheel to the rhythm of I wonder by Kanye west. She glanced over at Walker, her cousin, sitting in the passenger seat, one leg stretched out lazily, his arm resting on the armrest. She was really supposed to be teaching him how to drive before he was able to get his license but they pushed that idea off.

"Why am I here again?" Asked Ruby, she didn't really seem the point of hanging out with her younger cousin.

Walker, her younger cousin by a few years, shrugged His ocean eyes twinkled with that confident charm that seemed to come with being a successful actor. (No one cares I fear) He was always in front of a camera, but somehow, when they were together, he seemed just like the goofball she'd grown up with. He'd been in some pretty big show recently, Percy Jackson and the olympians. And people recognized him more often, but in her eyes, he was still the guy who would eat her last piece of pizza and deny it with a grin.

"To spend time with me we both know you weren't gonna teach me to drive anyway." Walker answered scrolling on his phone.

"So, when's the last time you went out like this? We both know you don't get out much, especially with no fans" Ruby asked throwing some shade in there.

Walker shrugged, a half-grin forming on his face as he looked out the window. "I don't know, every time I step out of the house, it's like I'm walking into a circus. I swear, you've got to be careful about what you post on instagram. One wrong angle and boom—there's a meme of me eating cereal at 3 a.m."

Ruby laughed, "Yeah, I saw that one," she teased, her eyes back on the road as they cruised through the quieter streets now. "I mean, it kinda is your fault who eats cereal at 3.am?"

"Don't hate on my midnight snacks," Walker said, his voice still carrying that playful edge. "You wouldn't believe the kind of creative ideas I get after a bowl of cereal. Seriously, I've written scripts like that."

Ruby gave him a sideways glance, raising an eyebrow. "Sure. scripts like a Dhar Mann movie"

"Don't hate on it till you've tried it" Walker leaned back in his seat, grinning as though he'd just created the next big trend. (News flash he didn't)

Ruby shook her head. "You're insane why would I do that, especially when I have to work my videos."

"Weren't you supposed to upload like, last week?" Walker asked.

Ruby rolled her eyes "Maybe I should do a video on how to deal with a professional actor cousin who thinks his life is more interesting than it really is."

"Hey," Walker held up his hands in mock defense, "I'm just giving the people what they want."

Ruby let out a soft laugh, finally putting the phone down on the dashboard. "I'm serious, though. We could do a video together sometime. A cousin collab. I mean, you're practically a walking, talking movie set, right?"

"True," Walker said, leaning back in his seat and crossing his arms. "People love a behind-the-scenes look. You could film me in the middle of a real day on set. You know, the part where I pretend to act like I know what I'm doing while everyone else is way more talented."

Ruby snorted. "Leah is definitely way better than you but you're good at what you do I guess. Plus, you've got the whole 'actor' thing down. I bet people would watch just to see you be all... brooding and mysterious."

"Brooding and mysterious?" Walker laughed. "Maybe I should give that a try. Next role, I'll be an enigmatic hero with a dark past."

Ruby rolled her eyes at his yapping, leaning back against the headrest. "Sure. And I'll be the relatable, down-to-earth YouTuber who tells the truth about the struggles of living your best life online."

"Oh definitely" Walker said dramatically. "The struggle is real. Tell me, Ruby, what's the hardest part about filming your videos?"

"Well..." She grinned, adopting a mock serious tone. "The hardest part is trying to figure out how to make my life look interesting enough for other people to care about."

Walker tilted his head. "Yeah, but you're actually good at it. I mean, I don't get it, but I know that people follow you for a reason. You've got this whole... thing going on. Like, you're real in a way that a lot of influencers aren't."

Ruby blinked, surprised at his sudden sincerity. "Thanks, Walker," she said, her voice quieter. "That might be the nicest thing you've ever said to me without cursing"

He smiled, his usual easygoing demeanor returning. "Don't mention it. I'm just saying, not everyone can juggle life in front of a camera the way you do. You're making it work, and that's more than most people can say."

"Maybe we should actually do a video about how we've both somehow turned our lives into one big, weird performance," Ruby suggested. "You with your movie roles, me with my vlogs. Both of us pretending to be someone we're not... but, like, not really?"

"Oh," Walker said, lifting an eyebrow looking at her in fake confusion. "Right.."

Ruby rolled her eyes at his stupidity. "You know what I'm trying to say."

"Yea I know I'm just messing with you." Walker said with a grin.

Ruby sighed. "Weirdo.. It's like a weird, never-ending loop of trying to keep it real while also selling something that isn't real at all. It's exhausting, right?"

"Totally," he agreed, his voice taking on a more serious tone. "But maybe that's the fun part. I mean, if you really think about it, we're both just telling stories. Yours might be a little more... impromptu than mine, but it's still a story."

Ruby took a moment to let his words sink in. There was something about this conversation that felt different from their usual talks. Maybe it was because, for once, they weren't talking about career goals or the next big thing. They were just talking about what it meant to live in a world where everyone was trying to curate their own narrative, whether it was on a film set or in front of a camera on YouTube.

"Yeah," she said softly, looking out at the park. "It's kind of crazy, isn't it? How much of our lives are just... stories we're trying to tell. But at the same time, we don't even know how the story ends."

Walker nodded slowly, his gaze shifting toward the sky. "Maybe that's what makes it interesting, though. The fact that we're all figuring it out as we go along."

Ruby smiled, her eyes lingering on him for a moment. "I think we're doing okay. Even if we don't know where it's going."

"Definitely." Walker grinned, reaching for his phone. "Now, what if we made that our next big collab? 'Life Is a Story,' starring Ruby and Walker scobell. Catchy, right?"

Ruby laughed. "You just want an excuse to get me in front of the camera with you."

"Maybe," he teased. "But it'll be our story. Plus maybe me and emriee?"

Ruby looked at him in confusion. "What do you mean?"

"Like me and emriee.. together?" Walker said in a questioning tone.

"No way in hell, my friends are off limits." Ruby said. What if they get together they break up, she could lose emriee.

"Okay so then Mason is off limits" Walker replied back with  snarky tone.

"I don't even like Mason!" Ruby raised her voice, she's definitely not beating the allegations.

"Like hell you don't" Walker mumbled under his breath.

"What did you say?" Ruby asked.

"Nothing" Walker replied as he went back on his phone and Ruby grabbed a bag of cookies that were and her car and hit him with it.
