14.Midnight Talks ★
TW- panic attack and long chapter ;)
3rd person
Gally was quiet as he walked with a grumpy expression on his face. The only source of light was the fire crackling on the stick as Thomas and Cara walked slowly behind the boy. Cara had her arms crossed over her chest as she groaned, titling her head back slightly.
"I can't believe I have to do this." She announced to the boy next to her annoyedly, to which he hummed in response. Obviously too tired to reply to the brunette. The day was...definitely something..first going into the maze and then Alby and now this?
"Can you be quiet?" Gally's voice was heard with a hint of frustration and annoyance towards the short brunette girl behind him.
"I would be quiet but where's the fun in that? Shank." Cara replied sarcastically, the glader slang rolling off her tongue with ease, she whispered the name for only Thomas to hear who walked quietly beside her, arms by his side as he stared at the ground infront of the two.
Thomas tried to hide his smirk, clearing his throat with a grunt. Cara glanced to her side seeing the smirk planted on the boy's face, the girl rolled her eyes and smirked with him.
After a brief moment, it was silent again. As they finally reached the handmade wooden jail. Gally opened the gate and motioned for them to go in, without question they obeyed. Thomas held the sides as he jumped down, quickly planting his feet onto the mud floor. Cara following his actions after, she pulled herself down onto the ground. Her legs pulled up to her chest, tilting her head onto the wall when the two boys started talking, she decided to block out their voices.
"Hey Gally?" A voice was heard, coming from in-front of Gally. He glanced up to make sure Thomas knew he was listening while tying the rope together, creating knots on the door so they can't open it. Thomas continued. "What's your problem with me?" The dark brunette haired boy questioned. Gally paused thinking up an answer.
"Everything started going wrong the minute you showed up." He sighed, letting his head drop slightly. "First Ben. Then Alby and now the girls. Especially the other one. Everybody saw she recognised you and I'm betting you know who she is." Gally slowly stood up again, beginning to walk away when he stopped again at the sound of Thomas' voice. He didn't turn this time.
"Gally, you know we can't stay here forever, right?" Gally didn't respond as he walked away from the two with the fire stick in his hand.
Thomas sucks out a quick breath before turning around, seeing the girl on the ground. He slid down the wall, sitting on the floor like the girl opposite him.
They didn't talk, not one word was shared. Just listening to the sounds of the Glade from the gentle rustling of leaves in the cold, refreshing wind to the distant hoot of an owl. The night carries a symphony of natures whispers. It's a time when the world slows down, and you can hear the quiet melodies of the nocturnal creatures coming out into the night sky.
There was something different this time between the pair. It was like their actions spoke louder the words. Cara didn't mind the silence and neither did Thomas. Just the feeling of the two young teenagers sitting opposite each other, comforting each other without any interference. Unfortunately for them it didn't last long.
A boy under the age of thirteen and big bouncy brown curls in his hair, freckles painted across his round chubby face, a lantern in one hand, a cloth in the other. The boy had appeared out from the darkness.
The sudden footsteps made Thomas snap his head up, eyes wide with surprise.
"It's just me." Thomas and Cara recognised the voice of the younger boy as he sat down on the green grass, sitting in front of the wooden bars. Putting the lantern near the bar allowing them and him to see each other's faces.
"Here you'll run better on a full stomach." Chuck unwrapped the cloth he held in his fist, revealing a few pieces of bread. Handing Thomas a few pieces. He held out another piece for the girl, making her suddenly stand up. Grabbing the bread while thanking the boy before the girl starts eagerly chowing down on her food. Chuck smiled slightly at the two, pulling out his little wooden figure that he had been working on for the last few days.
"Hey what you got there?" Cara asked with a mouth full of bread, Thomas looked up from his food. Immediately looking towards Chuck.
Chuck held out his hand, showing the two his little project. "Wow Chuck, that came out pretty damn good." Chuck smiled, handing her the toy to get a closer look. Thomas also looking over to it.
"What's it for?" She spoke to Chuck as she reached out to hold chuck's hand as a feeling circled around in her stomach. She noticed the hesitation in the boy, her eyebrows furrowing in concern.
"It's for my parents.." Chuck gulped, his voice trembling slightly, staring deeply at the figure in the girl's hand.
"You remember your parents?" Thomas asked curiously.
"No," he paused to take a small breath. "I mean, I know I must have them and wherever they are, I'm sure they miss me. But I can't miss them since I don't remember them." Cara felt utter pain for the boy, thirteen years old, no memory of his past life. Stuck in a place surrounded by boys and monster-eating creatures. Chuck never used to talk about his feelings. Since he got to the maze, he was teased and mocked at by a few older boys so he decided from then on he wouldn't tell anyone his feelings. It was obvious that he knew Thomas and Cara were trustworthy enough for him to open up. Cara rubbed her thumb around in circles on his hand, trying to help him find some sort of comfort.
"But I know I have you two and I know you'll keep me safe from the stuff out there." Chuck smiled to Cara who smiled softly back, Thomas felt his lips curve, forming into a small smile.
"What do you think you'll find out there tomorrow?" The boy quickly changed subjects and began talking to Thomas.
"I don't know." He responded. "But if there is a way out, Minho and I will find it and we will get you out of here. Me, Cara, you, all of us Chuck. We will get out of here." Thomas commented with a hopeful tone.
Cara nodded "Yeah. Thomas will find us a way out. And no matter what, if I have to drag you to get you out. I will."
Chuck moved his eyes from Thomas to her, letting his head drop. His hands fiddling with his figure. He then held out his hand with the toy. "Here." Chuck handed her the figure when she wouldn't take it.
"Chuck...why would you give this to me?" She spoke, trying to understand. Her confusion spread like a flock of startled birds taking flight, scattering in all directions as the realisation hit her.
"I can't remember them anyway." His parents. "But maybe if Thomas finds a way to get out of this mess, you can give it to them." Cara chocked on her words, fighting to get them out until she stopped and looked down at the figurine.
"I'll let you guys get some sleep." The curly haired boy stood, Cara and his hands slipping out of each others, making sure to grab his lantern from the ground before beginning to turn away.
"Hey Chuck!" Cara called out to him, making him twist around. "Come here buddy." With a wave of her hand, he begin to walk his way back. Crouching down to the bars again.
"Put out your hand." Cara grabbed his hand gently before putting the figure in the palm of his hand, moving her fingers to make his wrap tightly around the toy.
"I want you to give them that yourself. We're gonna get out of here, all of us. I promise."
Even if Cara hated promises, she was willing to go against her own feelings to reassure the younger boy.
Chuck nodded his head, grasping the figurine tightly in his hand. "Good night."
"Good night bud." She smiled. Thomas saying a good night to the boy too as he walked away.
Silence floated through the air as the glade quietened, Cara had started to feel tired that she didn't even notice that she was sat next to Thomas, but eventually the sleep took over her body. Her head rested against the wall until it began to fall to the right, fortunately for her, Thomas' shoulder had caught her from falling over. He didn't speak against it as he didn't want to admit he liked the feeling. After a while Thomas soon drifted to sleep as well, leaning his head to rest on top of Cara's. Letting his thoughts and ideas glide away like leaves in the wind.
Cara's Dream.
I was standing in a room waiting for Thomas to return as he asked to talk to me today in private, quickly running away before anyone could see him. The room was lit up blue and red, the lights reflecting off the glass containers. It reflected onto my face, making my features appear darker.
After what felt like an eternity, but was really only a few minutes. Thomas finally made his appearance. His features manifested a frantic expression.
"Hey." I acknowledged him, as he walked up to me with long strides, seeming to be in a hurry. His large, calloused hand enveloped my delicate fingers. The warmth of his grip offering understanding and reassurance as he stood close to me that I could feel his soft breath against my neck, sending a tingle fall down my neck and my spine.
"You need to listen to me right now, I don't have time to say it twice, they know I'm here." My brows snapped together in confusion as he spoke. My breathing picked up as thoughts swam around my head.
"Thomas, what are you talking about? Who's coming?" I stammered as different possibilities popped up. He shook his head, wanting me to understand.
"I did it. I'm sorry Cara. I-I couldn't keep watching them die." His friends, our friends.
My lips trembled with fear as the realisation flew through my mind. He was going to get sent to the maze. He was going to lose his memories. Of WCKD, Of his family, friends. Me.
He would lose it all, lose everything which meant that I would too. Thomas was my everything. The boy who comforted me when I had nightmares about my parents death, losing my brother. The boy who listened to me, the boy I loved. The boy who genuinely cared for me when no one else would. Not even my own best friend. Teresa.
I was going to lose him.
"No, no you-you can't leave. You can't" I shook my head as tears begin to swell up in my emerald eyes. My knees felt weak under me. My body felt numb as my mind processed. I couldn't hold back the tears anymore as one slowly escaped my eye, rolling down my cheek only to be wiped away by Thomas' finger. He held my cheek softly.
"I'm sorry, Cara. Please don't cry. It'll work out. I'll get out of there, and I'll see you again, okay?" He nodded, trying to cheer me up but it didn't work. It was impossible to escape. He would forget how to.
My lips trembled, my lungs felt tight, I could slowly feel the walls closing in on me. My ears began to ring, I could barely hear anything over the pounding of my heart and the loud persistent sound. Making it harder for me to concentrate on my breath.
I couldn't breathe.
I glanced around, everything blurring together, and then I saw his face - his face a mix of concern and determination.
"Cara? Cara, look at me." He whispered in soft voice, his voice cutting through the chaos of the sounds around me. My eyes met his and it seemed like everything around me stopped. But it didn't. I still couldn't catch my breath. Thomas knew what to do, since this has happened before. It wasn't the best experience.
"Just breathe with me, okay? Can you do
that?" He demonstrated a slow, deep inhale. I tried to mimic him, but my chest felt even more tighter, the air slowly seemed to slip away. Like it had vanished.
He reached out, taking my cheeks into his hands. Forcing me to look into his eyes. His voice still slightly muffled, my hands clutching onto his shirt, trying to hold myself up as my legs began to feel more numb like noodles.
"Cara. Listen to my voice. Just breathe. Can you do that for me?" He nodded trying to make me mimic his actions as he demonstrated again a deep inhale, with a slow exhale. I tried copying him, having to do it a few times, repeating the same pattern.
Inhale, hold, exhale, repeat.
Thomas whispering sweets words to me.
"You're safe," he mumbled, brushing the hair away from my sweaty face to behind my ear. "Just breathe with me."
"Just keep looking at me."
"I'm right here."
Eventually the room started to become clear again, the ring fading into the distance of my ear. I could hear his unmuffled voice again. He nodded again, letting a small smile slide onto his lips as he saw the progress. My lungs began to feel less tighter and my throat less closed. My eyes red and glossy, the skin around them slightly swollen, my tears leave glistening traces down my cheeks, my eyes felt heavy, my lashes felt wet.
The quiet moment came to a sudden halt when guards had flooded into the room, searching for Thomas and me. We took a glance at each other, before leaning forward, knowing this would be the last time we would see each other again. Our lips smashing into each other, like our hearts were whispering our goodbyes to each other. A guard soon turned around the corner as we pulled away, shouting to the others that he had found us.
The man grabbing Thomas by the upper arm before trying to drag him of me. We pulled against the arms of the guards, but they didn't move an inch. The other guards had also found us, another guard helping getting Thomas away with two holding me back from running to him.
"No! Thomas!" I screamed as the brunette was dragged further away by the monsters in black masks, I was still being held back as I watched my lover get taken away from me, knowing what the future would be like.
"I love you Cara!" Thomas screamed as he was eventually taken into a long white corridor, like it was hinting at the end of us.
My eyes filled with tears yet again, almost as they didn't even go away. I couldn't hold them and let them flow down my already stained cheeks. My best friend, Teresa stood next to me, trying to provide comfort but it was useless, as she watched the scene play out in-front of her.
"Remember me! I love you!" I yelled out, tugging at the arms of the guards trying to escape from their grip but to no avail. They had held my arms so tight I could already feel the bruises forming onto my skin but I didn't care about that, all I cared about was being back in my lovers arms but I knew that would never happen again.
The dream seemed to fade black as a voice screamed out almost like someone was in agonising pain.
"NO-"
Until another voice called out.
"Cara? Cara! Wake up!" The voice yelled out as the girl felt hands gripping at her shoulders. A sudden gasp interrupted his words.
