17: Lando doesn't give up easily

Lando's POV:

It was my home Grand Prix. As soon as I stepped in I heard the crowed yelling my name. I signed autographs and took pictures with a huge smile on my face.

As soon as I walked in the paddock, the interviewers started surrounding me with questions.

"Lando, how does it feel to be at home?" And interviewer asked and I looked at him.

"It feels amazing. I'm always happy to come back home and even more race. The fanatics are amazing, everything is amazing." I replied with a smile on my face.

"What are your expectations?" He asked.

"Winning." I replied shrugging and he chuckled.

I looked around with a smile on my face and my eyes spotted her. She was getting ready to go live. I heard the interviewer ask something but I kept looking at Mais.

She felt my eyes on her and looked up, our eyes meeting. A smile appeared on her face and my features softened as I smiled at her.

"Lando?" The interviewer called me and I looked at him.

"Sorry, can you excuse me for a minute?" I asked smiling politely.

"Sure, good luck this weekend Lando." He told me patting my shoulder.

"Thanks mate." I smiled giving him a thumbs up and walked away.

I walked towards Maisie. She pretended she hasn't noticed my presence, focusing on her notebook.

"Did you miss me Maisie Findlay?" I lowered her notebook and she looked up at me.

"I was fine." She joked and I chuckled softly. She looked around. "You got all the interviewers lining up." She added.

"And yet here I am." I joked and she chuckled looking down. "You're my favorite interviewer though." I nudged her slightly.

"I'm glad." She raised her eyebrows slightly.

"Where's your friend?" I asked referring to Chi.

"Carlos stole her from me." She replied.

"Isn't she your personal assistant?" I put my hands on my pockets and she threw her hands besides her hips.

"She's my friend first so I'll let her have her fun." She spoke and I chuckled. "Even though I don't know where the hell is the Aston Martin motor home."

"Are you always lost?" I teased her and she glared at me with a smile. "I can take you." I offered. "I mean, if you want." I shrugged.

"Yeah, thanks." She smiled.

I walked around her, she followed me with her eyes, the smile on her face not fading. We started walking the other way.

"Who are you interviewing? Lance or Fernando?" I asked as I saw her flip through her notebook.

"Both." She raised her eyebrows.

"For your surprise Fernando acts like the teenager and Lance like the adult." I spoke and she chuckled.

"What are you talking about? Fernando is my favorite rookie." She joked and I chuckled.

"I'm telling Oscar your said that." I told her and she shook her head.

"Don't. Last time he got mad at me because I said Logan was my favorite rookie." She spoke and I chuckled.

"Did you watch F1 when I was a rookie?" He asked.

"Of course I did." She replied looking up at me. "You were the rookie sensation." She added and I smiled.

"Was I?" I asked and she nodded.

"You had that rookie glow." She spoke.

"Was I your favorite?" I asked and she raised her eyebrows.

"Not when Kimi Räikkonen exists." She replied and I looked at her offended.

"Honestly fair, Kimi is amazing." I spoke and she nodded smiling.

"I hope someday I get the chance to interview him." She spoke.

"I'm sure you will." I smiled at her and she smiled back.

I spotted the Aston Martin motor home and stopped.

"There it is." I pointed at the entrance.

"Thank you Mr. Norris." She hugged her notebook to her chest.

"It was nothing Maisie Findlay." I put my hands in my pockets. She started walking towards the entrance as I watched her. "Good luck!" I yelled and she chuckled walking in.

Maisie's POV:

I was walking towards the hospitality where I was supposed to meet Chi.

"Maisie." I heard a voice and turned around seeing Zak Brown.

"Zak, hey." I greeted him politely.

"Where are you headed to?" He asked.

"To the hospitality." I replied.

"Why don't you come to the pitbox? I'm sure Lando and Oscar would love to see you there." He spoke and I bit my under lip slightly. "I heard from a trustworthy source that you're a real lucky charm." He added.

I chuckled looking down. Knowing exactly was that "trustworthy source."

"Sure." I gave in, not being able to reject the offer. "Will I have my own headset?" I asked excited and he nodded chuckling.

I walked in the pitbox with Zak guiding me. I saw Oscar and Lando getting ready for qualifying.

"Wow, the Chrome livery looks even better from up close." I spoke looking at the car with silver details.

"We're really proud of it." Zak crossed his arms in front of his chest. "Reminds me of old McLaren."

"Yeah, like the Lewis Hamilton winning the championship times." I spoke and he nodded.

"Mais." I heard a voice and looked up seeing Oscar, who had spotted me.

Lando also looked our direction, noticing my presence after Oscar did.

"How are you?" Oscar gave me a short hug and I rubbed his back.

"I'm good. How are you? Ready for qualifying?" I asked and he raised his eyebrow.

"Kinda nervous." He admitted and I chuckled. "Don't write that down." He joked and I laughed shaking my head.

"Oscar Piastri admits being nervous before qualifying." I pretended to write down on my notebook.

"Oh yeah?" He teased and I nodded smiling.

He took my notebook.

"Give me that back." I tried reaching for it but he raised his hand up in the air. "Oscar." I chuckled and he chuckled grabbing my arm softly with his free hand.

We heard someone clear his throat and turned around seeing Lando. Oscar lowered his hand and I snatched the notebook from him.

He chuckled and I hit his head softly with the notebook. He laughed and I chuckled.

"Are you here to be my lucky charm like you promised?" Lando asked remarking the word "my."

"I don't remember promising anything." I crossed my arms in front of my chest and he chuckled raising his eyebrows.

"You also claim not remembering what happened back in Lance's place." He teased and I hit his shoulder. "Ow." He smiled rubbing his shoulder.

"Good luck on qualifying Oscar." I turned back to look at Oscar.

I saw Lando cross his arms annoyed and decided to make him even more annoyed. I leaned in and kissed Oscar's cheek. He chuckled.

"Thank you Mais." His cheeks turned red as he scratched the back of his neck nervously.

"You'll do great." I fixed his suit and he smiled nodding.

He turned to walk away with a dorky smile on his face and I turned back to look at Lando.

"You want to play like that?" He asked with a smile on his face.

"I don't know what you're talking about." I shrugged trying to pretend my actions were innocent.

"Playing dumb doesn't go with you Maisie Findlay." He took a step closer, his voice lowering to a whisper. "So, are you going to be my lucky charm today?" He insisted.

"Why not?" I shrugged smiling softly and he smiled, his eyes switching between my eyes and lips. "Good luck Lan." I whispered and passed my hand through his hair, fixing his curls.

"No kiss for me?" He asked as he walked towards the car and I rolled my eyes smiling.

"Go." I told him and he chuckled.

My phone dinged and I looked at it. It was a message from Chi.

[...]

I watched the screen as Q3 started. Oscar crossed the line getting provisional pole. The McLarens were really fast this weekend.

The camera started following Lando as he prepared to start his flying lap. Suddenly, the camera switched, showing my face on the screen.

Maisie Findlay
F1 journalist and presenter

I chuckled softly and smiled at the camera. The camera switched back to the track and I looked down shaking my head with a smile.

This was gonna make a chaos.

Max crossed the line taking the pole from Oscar. I looked expectant as Lando approached the ending. He crossed the line and managed to take second place.

"Yes!" I clapped excited as everyone in the McLaren garage cheered.

The team started hugging each other and celebrating the amazing result.

[...]

Lando walked back in the garage and I walked towards him. I hugged him and he wrapped his arms around me chuckling.

"You truly are a lucky charm." He whispered and I chuckled rubbing his back.

"First row." I smiled and he nodded smiling.

"What are you gonna give me as a reward?" He asked, his hand still on my waist.

"Wasn't my luck enough?" I asked jokingly and he chuckled softly.

I saw Oscar behind him and walked towards him. Lando followed me with his eyes.

"Congratulations." I hugged him.

"Thank you Mais." He chuckled hugging me tightly. "We need you in the pitbox more often." He added and I shrugged.

"What can I say?" I pursed my lips in a smile.

"Let's not celebrate too much until tomorrow's race." Lando spoke and I looked at him.

"You should come around tomorrow too, and bring Chi for some extra support." Oscar suggested.

"Yeah?" I asked.

"It's good to have you around Mais." He replied and I smiled.

[...]

George and I had finished the interview about an hour ago but we just lost track of time talking.

"So you got hit in the head with a football kicked by Cristiano Ronaldo?" He asked chuckling and I nodded laughing. He laughed along. "That's a story to tell."

"Surely." I laughed. "That's why I like Messi more." I joked and he laughed. "That was actually the same day I met Frenkie." I scrunched my nose.

"How did you two meet?" He asked.

"I interviewed him and he told me he saw me get hit in the head by Ronaldo. I was super embarrassed but he said it was cute." I raised my eyebrows and George chuckled.

"Cute? I can see why things didn't work out." He joked and I laughed hitting his arm softly.

"He was actually great, before he cheated on me with my friend." I raised my eyebrows.

"It's still crazy to me that you got cheated on." He spoke and I looked at him.

"It happens to the best of us." I joked and he chuckled softly.

"You're too good to get cheated on." He spoke and I tilted my head waiting for him to continue. "I mean, you're smart, you're funny, you have those cute dimples when you smile." He spoke and I chuckled looking down.

"Apparently Frenkie didn't see that." I hugged my leg, resting my chin on my knee.

"He's actually an idiot." He spoke and I nodded.

"That we can all agree on." I spoke and he chuckled. "He made me lose faith in love."

"Do you want to talk about that?" He asked and I looked up at him. "Have you healed from that?" He asked and I tilted my head.

No one had ever asked me that.

"I think I'll need a few drinks for that." I spoke chuckling.

Suddenly, he stood up from the couch. I looked up at him confused.

"Where are you going?" I asked confused.

"We're going to get some drinks." He remarked the words "we're."

I chuckled shaking my head. He extended his hand and I grabbed it.

[...]

We were at his hotel room. He had gotten a bottle from the reception. We were a few drinks in and I was starting to get tipsy.

Laughter filled the room as we sat on the floor.

"Okay, now the serious conversation." He spoke and I whined as I laid down, my head falling on his lap.

He chuckled as he looked down at me.

"But we're having so much fun, why get sad?" I threw my hands in the air and he grabbed my hand, intertwining our fingers.

"Sometimes it's necessary to get sad to heal." He told me and I pulled his hand as he rubbed my hand with his thumb.

"Fine." I sat up and grabbed the bottle, I took another sip, grimacing at the taste. "He broke my heart in the worst way possible."

"Did you ever go to a therapist?" He asked and I shook my head.

"Didn't have the time. Too focused on my career." I replied and he pursed his lips. "I know what you're thinking."

"I'm not judging Mais. I understand, but sometimes we need to take the time to heal." He spoke and I pursed my lips nodding. "Keep going, I'm listening." He told me and I smiled, feeling my heart warm because of his words.

"I felt so insufficient when he cheated on me. I blamed myself." I raised my eyebrow realizing. "Was I not pretty enough? Not interesting enough? What was wrong with me?" I spoke looking down. I felt George's eyes on me as he listened attentively. "I put my heart in his hands and he decided to just throw it away like it was nothing. I don't ever ever want to feel the way he made me feel." My eyes started filling with tears. "My light faded for the longest time after that and he just kept going with his life. He knew everything about me and decided it wasn't enough for him. He wanted someone more exciting so he left me and went to find that someone." A tear slid down my cheek.

"Mais." George grabbed my hands. "It wasn't your fault. You're an amazing person. I he decided to cheat it was his loss, you didn't do anything but love him. Your heart is made out of gold Mais, you just don't give it to anyone and I think that's something really really special about you." He spoke wiping my tears with his thumb.

His words made my heart race. Maybe it was the alcohol but soon I found myself kissing him. He put his hands on my face deepening the kiss. Our lips moved in synch as he lowered his hands to my waist.

We ran out of breath and panted against each other's lips. He smiled and grabbed my face, going in for another kiss. I passed my hands through his soft hair and wrapped my arms around his neck.

Suddenly, I got flashes of a pair of blue eyes and curly hair. I broke the kiss and looked around like I had just woken up.

"Is everything alright Mais?" George asked confused.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have kissed you." I spoke standing up, panic invading me. "This was a mistake." I grabbed my coat from the bed and put it on.

"Was it?" George asked.

"I'm so sorry. You just said the right things and..." I passed my hands through my hair.

"Is it because of Lando?" George asked like he could read my thoughts.

I looked at him with regret on my face.

"Oh." He raised his eyebrow and put his hands in his pockets. "I get it."

"I'm so sorry. You're an amazing friend but just that." I spoke and he took a deep breath.

"You should tell him." He spoke and I nodded. "About the kiss and about how you feel about him. He's crazy about you." He chuckled softly.

"I don't know if he will after I tell him about us kissing." I spoke.

"Lando doesn't give up easily. Just don't lie to him." He spoke and I nodded.

"God, I'm so sorry George." I sighed frustrated.

"It's okay Mais." He hugged me. "It's okay." He whispered rubbing my back.
